From M&S to H&M and Zara – I tried the best autumn jackets on the high street so you don't have to
I've tried on countless trending autumn jackets, and these six are worthwhile...
After what feels like the longest summer in history, I don't think I'm alone in my excitement that temperatures have cooled. Not only can you sleep with an actual duvet, but getting dressed has become much more interesting. Although it's not quite heavy coat weather, autumn jackets are a must-have, and I've been on the hunt for the best styles on the high street.
Suede, leather and heritage prints seem to be key themes throughout our favourite brands' collections, and whilst it's worth noting the current autumn/winter fashion trends for 2026, what's really essential is to choose one or two jackets that work well with your existing staples. From my best wide-leg jeans and tailored trousers to knitwear
With so many options on the high street, I've managed to narrow it down to six key styles that can pair with a range of looks. Standout styles include M&S' fabulous fur-collar suedette jacket, which evokes the spirit of the 70s, and H&M's funnel-neck jacket that can be worn well into winter, layered over a chunky knitted jumper.
Combining two key trends this season, heritage checks and a drawstring waist, this jacket will see you through the season in style. The checks will add personality to your autumn outfits, and the adjustable waist strings create a flattering finish. It's relatively true to size, yet still has enough room for layering knitwear underneath.
The weighty design of this leather-look jacket impressed me, especially considering its affordable price tag. The relaxed, slightly oversized cut feels incredibly easy to wear. Its collar can be turned up into a funnel neck, which is particularly handy on chilly morning walks. I would suggest sizing down if you're in between sizes.
Evoking the iconic style of the 70s, this faux suede jacket feels so retro. The faux-fur collar and sleeves make it an eye-catching choice, and it could easily be mistaken for a far more expensive design- think Charlotte Simone or Rixo. It's safe to say this has gone straight to the top of my wishlist.
Lean into the country-coded aesthetic this season with this reversible cotton jacket. Checks are a great way to inject texture into otherwise monochrome outfits. What stands out the most about this design is that it's reversible and can be worn in either khaki or light brown. It's true to size and comes in sizes 6-24.
Already a best-selling style, this jacket is bound to sell out fast. Earthy greens are one of the key autumn/winter fashion colour trends 2026, and this faux-leather design offers the chicest way to wear green. It has a bomber silhouette with plenty of volume and an elasticated waist.
Shown at M&S's first-ever runway show, this faux leather jacket looks and feels far more expensive than it actually is. It features a relaxed, slouchy cut that makes it a great layering piece during the transitional season. I'm wearing a size S here, and I would recommend sizing down.
Dressing for the autumn months can be tricky due to changing temperatures and weather forecasts; however, layering is key. And although temperatures have cooled, it's a little too warm to wear a heavy-duty winter coat, which is why investing in the best autumn jackets is worth it. The right style can give you warmth without feeling bulky, and it can help to elevate your favourite outfits too.
