Neutrals are very much in right now, and when it comes to styling understated elegance, Sophie Raworth proves why these tones work so well for elevated everyday wear.

Stepping out at Henley Literary Festival last weekend, she wore ME+EM’s straight crop jacket, which features a boxy fit, collared neckline, and cropped length. As one of the best British clothing brands, it’s no surprise that the statement buttons finished off this 100% wool jacket. Even from afar, you can see the short-pile bouclé finish of the fabric, which looks cosy and stylish.

Sophie paired the black wool jacket with chocolate brown, wide-leg trousers, which introduced a hit of autumnal warmth and added some brightness to the look, without compromising on sophistication. To balance her look, Sophie carried the tone of her jacket to her shoes, opting for adidas Samba OG shoes with classic black stripes, adding an effortless touch to the look.

When it comes to trying on the best autumn jackets this season, wool is a great fabric to look out for. Much like how we opt for lightweight, natural fibres like cotton and linen in the summer months as they offer optimal breathability, natural wool fibres work inversely to trap body heat and provide superior insulation, alongside breathability. These fibres also work surprisingly well when wet and can withstand light showers without letting in cool air or feeling wet to the touch.

If you do invest in a wool jacket this season, while animal prints and heritage patterns are dominating autumn/winter fashion trends for 2026, a black jacket like Sophie’s makes a particularly versatile addition to capsule wardrobes. Offering unmatched versatility, black outerwear will reliably work with all autumn/winter fashion colour trends for 2026, and it will never go out of fashion either.

Styling her black coat with a pair of chocolate brown trousers created a great autumn pairing, and Sophie carried this colour palette through her outfit to create an essentially two-toned look – minus the trio of neutrals found on her adidas trainers. Both these tones are simple, foundational hues and, paired together, they create an earthy warmth which is full of depth and also feels incredibly polished.
