After what feels like the longest summer, complete with countless heatwaves, I can't deny that I'm looking forward to cooler days and autumn fashion. From reaching for a sharp trench coat to layering up with a cosy knit, there is something so appealing about the change of the season.

And Nicole Kidman's latest outfit has me inspired. In a recent Instagram post, she was seen wearing a cosy deep grey jumper whilst on board a boat. Styled with light-wash relaxed jeans, this is the kind of effortless autumn outfit idea that's also incredibly chic – I can confirm that I have been scrolling through countless knitwear sections since.

A soft grey jumper is a must-have staple that every wardrobe deserves, and tend to look good with pretty much anything, from denim blues to dark tailored trousers; even a white jeans outfit is complemented by a grey knit. And although I can't see what shoes Nicole is wearing, I'd recommend adding your best white trainers to this formula.

What I love about a classic jeans-and-a-jumper formula is that it can be styled in so many ways. This duo works as an everyday laid-back look with trainers and simple jewellery, but it can also be elevated to a smart-casual outfit with a few small tweaks. Just add a blazer and leather loafers, and it instantly feels more polished.

Cool-weather dressing doesn't need to be overly complicated, and a cosy knit and relaxed denim are the kind of dependable staples that can be a base for a range of outfits. After months of dressing for the heat, I'm more than ready to start layering again, and this is the kind of easy, effortless outfit that I'll be returning to when temperatures drop.
