Julianne Moore proves wearing black with navy is a sophisticated choice - it's a fashion rule that's made to be broken

Thought navy and black could never pair? This look suggests otherwise

Some fashion rules feel so ingrained we barely question them, and keeping navy and black apart is certainly one of them. Yet Julianne Moore has just made a convincing case for ignoring this piece of styling advice.

Spotted in New York last week, she paired a navy blue knitted top with relaxed black trousers, proving both these neutral shades can look far more sophisticated together than you might expect. Both shades are understated yet classic, and worn together, they are surprisingly complementary.

For her outing, she wore a softly structured blue knitted tee paired with some black trousers that taper in slightly, a chic autumn outfit idea. She accessorised with a black Bottega Veneta woven shoulder bag, oval sunglasses and an unexpected finish of white heeled boots. She adds a touch of colour with bright red drop earrings.

The contrast of white footwear lifts the whole look, whilst the black accessories make it feel cohesive. The trick to making navy and black work together is to avoid making the outfit feel too matchy-matchy. Julianne's top has a softer, more tactile finish than her trousers, and her addition of a woven handbag adds texture to the look. This simple formula makes two darker colours feel sophisticated and put-together.

For an everyday take on Julianne's look, I'd start with a navy jumper, fine-knit top or cardigan and pair it with black tailored trousers. Wide-leg or relaxed styles are an elevated choice. And instead of boots, add your best white trainers for a smart-casual take on this formula.
