Julia Roberts just revived this forgotten Birkenstock style – we'd pick it over Arizona sandals and Boston clogs every time
She wore Birkenstock's elevated take on flip-flops
Much like UGGs in winter, Birkenstocks are a summertime staple. For the last couple of years, the double-strap Arizona sandals and the much-loved Boston clogs have been absolutely everywhere, but Julia Roberts just drew my attention to another of the brand's contenders for most comfortable sandals.
As soon as I saw her Birkenstock Gizeh sandals, I immediately felt nostalgic. I'd completely forgotten that these were the very first Birkenstocks I owned! They're like an elevated take on traditional flip-flops, featuring a toe post design and that instantly recognisable cork footbed. This minimalist sandal is highly rated for its comfort, and they offer a great deal more support than regular flip-flops. Plus, they don't make that flip-flop noise when you walk - bonus!
In sleek silver, Julia's version will work with every outfit from late summer into early autumn, and you'll absolutely be digging them out again next year. Price-wise, they're more affordable than the suede Boston clogs, plus they're available in half sizes and either a regular or narrow fit.
Shop silver sandals
A Birkenstock classic, these have got some impressive customer reviews. One wrote: "I can't wear anything else on my feet, no matter the season. For me, the perfect shoe," while another said, "a treat for the feet, it's my absolute favourite shoe". Silver will work as a neutral, like it has here for Julia, plus the buckle is adjustable so you can find the perfect fit.
I'm always impressed by how comfortable FitFlop trainers are, so I'd expect nothing less from the sandals. Now that these are reduced in the FitFlop sale, I might just have to put them to the test! I love the black sole on this option, which is very practical when it comes to keeping them clean.
An impressive designer lookalike, these are incredibly similar to Julia's sandals. They're also available in a darker silver, as well as black or white.
Recreate Julia's look
Whilst they'll be an easy accompaniment to your best summer dresses right now, for warm early autumn weather, there really is no chicer combination than jeans and Birkenstocks, so I guarantee you'll get plenty of wear out of your new sandals.
The silver finish adds a bit of glamour to what can feel like a practical shoe, plus Birkenstock sandals last for years, so they're well worth the investment. In fact, I bet I've got my vintage Birkenstock Gizehs somewhere, I must dig them out...
