Hannah Fry's mood-boosting rainbow jumper on The Celebrity Traitors is a welcome change from autumnal neutrals

It's proof that knitwear doesn't have to be dull

Knitwear at this time of year can feel like a sea of beige, black, grey and navy. And while neutral jumpers are incredibly useful and will always have a place within your autumn outfit ideas, sometimes a look needs a little bit more colour and personality. Cue Professor Hannah Fry, who gave The Celebrity Traitors host Claudia Winkleman a run for her money on last night's episode with this statement knit.

She brought a welcome dose of colour to a tense breakfast in the castle, wearing a rainbow-striped jumper by Belgian fashion brand Essentiel Antwerp. The striking combination of colours aside, I loved the chunky alpaca wool knit and slightly oversized fit.

It features asymmetric stripes in shades of pink, red, green and blue, and is the perfect way to lift your favourite old jeans and trainers combination. It's still available to buy, but at £260, it's a bit of an investment piece, so if you're looking for a more affordable option, I've scoured the virtual high street and found some bold options to brighten any rainy day this season.

A colourful knit like Hannah's will work much harder in your wardrobe than you might expect. When choosing yours, look for a style that picks out colours you already have in your wardrobe. Perhaps you want to pick up on some of those shades in your accessories, or you can simply let the jumper take centre stage instead.

Rainbow brights will instantly refresh denim, or give a new lease of life to tailored trousers or a simple midi skirt. They look great worn under classic winter coats, too.

It's a reminder that autumnal style doesn't have to be predictable. If shades of camel and brown aren't for you, be faithful to rainbow brights instead!
