Sophie, Countess of Wessex has opened up on how she welcomed Prince Harry's wife Meghan Markle into the royal family when she married him back in 2018.

Sophie, who is married to the Queen's youngest son Prince Edward, made the comments while sharing her thoughts on Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's controversial from the monarchy.

The pair stepped back from their roles as senior members of the royal family at the beginning of the year and have since moved across the pond to begin a new life in Los Angeles with their one-year-old son, Archie.

Admitting she wishes the Duke and Duchess of Sussex nothing but the best, Sophie said, "I just hope that they will be happy."

Speaking to The Sunday Times in a rare interview, the royal mother-of-two added, "We all try to help any new members of the family."

Comparing her and Edward’s long relationship to Meghan and Harry’s whirlwind love story, Sophie admits that that time helped her adjust to royal life - time that Meghan did not have.

“Remember I’d had five years to adjust and for our six-month engagement I was even staying in Buckingham Palace. Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out”, she adds.

Sophie also chatted about her and Prince Edward's children, Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, Viscount Severn, 12, explaining that their lack of HRH title means they will probably lead a pretty normal life when they are adults.

Admitting she opted against using her brood's royal titles in order to instil a good work ethic into them, she said, "We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living. Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely."

Speaking on her son and daughter's independent education, she added, "They go to a regular school. They go to friends for sleepovers and parties.

"At weekends we do lots of dog walking and stay with friends. I guess not everyone’s grandparents live in a castle, but where you are going is not the important part, or who they are. When they are with the Queen, she is their grandmother."
