Sarah Ferguson works on poignant 9/11 campaign close to her heart

Sarah Ferguson paid a poignant tribute to the victims of 9/11, on the 17th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on US soil.

On Tuesday 11th September 2018, the Duchess of York attended the 14th BGC Annual Charity Day at Canary Wharf in London.

It's an annual event that has raised approximately $147 million since it’s inception for dozens of charities, and commemorates BGC’s 658 friends and colleagues and 61 Eurobrokers employees, who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Representing her own charity Street Child - which aims to help vulnerable children in Africa and Asia - the mother-of-two took to the phones on the trading floor of the global brokerage firm, which distributes 100% of its revenues on the day to good causes.

The Duchess’ connection to the 9/11 attacks is a personal one, according to ABC News. The former royal was in New York on the day, and is actually said to have run late for an 8:45 a.m meeting for her charity at the World Trade Centre on that fateful day.

Commenting at the time her spokesman revealed:

“The Duchess of York is desperately upset for everyone involved in this terrible tragedy,

“It is unbelievable, she was just a few minutes away when the explosion took place.”

And in another strange twist, the mascot for her Chances of Children charity - a doll named Little Red - was found by volunteer and emergency medical technician Brian Van Flandern, at ground zero, amidst the rubble and carnage.

Revealing more to the BBC at the time Sarah said: “Because our office is on the 101st floor, Little Red always sat on the window looking over New York and over the United States as I imagine she did because she is a little red rag doll, standing at about 12 inches.“On the day of the terrible disaster, she was found in the rubble by a fireman who put her in his helmet and carried her out.”

In 2006, the Duchess of York revisited the event by marking the fifth anniversary of the attacks, attending a service at the British Memorial Garden in Manhattan alongside ex-husband Prince Andrew.
