Prince William’s reported promise to Kate Middleton after the couple welcomed Prince Louis has now been fulfilled—and the Cambridges’ 2021 Christmas card captures this wonderful moment.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have now released their highly-anticipated Cambridge Christmas card and it’s quite a departure from last year’s. Though some have labeled the family Christmas card “insensitive” due to its depiction of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children abroad, others excitedly pointed out Princess Charlotte’s likeness to her great-grandmother the Queen. With each of the royals opting for summery clothes, Prince William and Kate’s Christmas card snap is believed to have been taken in Jordan during their private half-term vacation.

This Middle Eastern trip was no doubt incredibly special for the Duchess, who once lived in the beautiful country as a child. Though it also reflects the fulfilment of a particularly adorable promise Prince William is said to have made to her three years ago after visiting Jordan without her.

The Duke of Cambridge’s tour came just two months after he and Kate welcomed Prince Louis and he travelled alone whilst Kate remained in the UK on maternity leave. According to Express.co.uk, he shared at the time, “She is very upset that I am coming here without her”, before reflecting on how his wife has such “fond” memories of her time in Amman.

He reportedly disclosed that Kate “remember[s] very fondly the almost three years she spent here as a child when her father worked for British Airways in Amman."

"Catherine’s experience is not unique—the interchange between our two countries is real and deep: work, study, tourism and family links,” he added, before also revealing a truly romantic promise.

Prince William declared, "We will have to bring the kids next time”.

Now three years later, the Queen’s grandchild has finally delivered on this heartfelt promise, returning to Jordan for a wonderful trip with Kate and their children. During his 2018 visit, Prince William also paid tribute to Kate by recreating a stunning Middleton family photo taken during their time living there, apparently exclaiming, “Need to come back with the family for this shot.”

Sharing his photo on social media side-by-side with the original, the caption explained, “The Duke of Cambridge visits Jerash, the same site that The Duchess of Cambridge visited, aged 4, with her sister and father when the family lived in Jordan.”

Prince William’s promise to return with his family has now been fulfilled and celebrated in adorable style with the Cambridge Christmas card photo. It’s release comes ahead of the Royal Family’s first Christmas since Prince Philip’s death and many of the Queen’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including the Cambridges, are expected to gather at Sandringham as the big day draws ever nearer.
