Prince Harry is set to star in a new documentary—and we’ve already cleared our calendars.
The Me You Can’t See, produced for Apple TV+, will follow the Duke of Sussex in his exploration of ‘mental wellness, mental fitness and mental health’ in the digital age. The series aims to empower audiences to take control of their own mental wellbeing by raising awareness of the issue and providing information on treatment options. High-profile celebrities, including Lady Gaga and Glenn Close, are also confirmed to feature in the eagerly-anticipated show. The VIP guests will sit down with Prince Harry to share their own mental health journeys, with the intention of normalizing conversations on the issue and highlighting the importance of services to those in need.
Prince Harry emphasized the universal nature of mental health in a recent press release, reminding the public that he too experiences internal struggles.
“The majority of us carry some form of unresolved trauma, loss, or grief, which feels—and is—very personal,” he said. “Yet the last year has shown us that we are all in this together, and my hope is that this series will show there is power in vulnerability, connection in empathy, and strength in honesty.”
The impassioned statement comes just days after Tom Bradby revealed that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry weren't in ‘great shape’ mentally on their Africa tour. The ITV journalist witnessed first-hand the strain of royal life on the new parents during their 10-day visit, having interviewed the couple numerous times for the 2019 documentary, Harry and Meghan: An African Journey. At one point, the Duchess of Sussex can be seen holding back tears as she talks about the difficulty of ‘surviving’ under the scrutiny of the British tabloids. Harry also spoke about his mental health in the film, revealing that it is something he will ‘always have to manage’.
The couple again discussed the downsides of international fame in their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.
The UK tabloid frenzy surrounding their relationship ultimately resulted in their withdrawal as senior royals and their emigration to the US. Meghan opened up about the impact of the media backlash on her psyche in the CBS special, admitting the constant criticism drove her to a state of complete despair.
Despite now living in a better environment, she remains haunted by this photograph, taken when she was having suicidal thoughts. Harry described the situation as toxic in a February interview with James Corden, revealing he knew he had to “get my family out of here”.
