Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have issued a heartfelt message to the people of Ukraine as they encourage global leaders to do the same amid the rising crisis.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no strangers to speaking out on issues close to their hearts and which affect huge numbers of people across the world. From their statement about Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis to their open letter to G20 leaders about vaccine equality, Prince Harry and Meghan regularly release powerful messages urging people to respect, support and do all they can to help fellow humans. Now the Queen’s grandchild and the Duchess have spoken out as the crisis in Ukraine reached terrifying levels amid the Russian invasion.

Taking to their Archewell website, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared a powerful message. In it, the royal couple showed their support for the people of Ukraine during this terrifying time and urged the “global community” to follow this example.

“Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this breach of international and humanitarian law,” it poignantly declared, before adding that they “encourage the global community and its leaders to do the same.”

Already this week UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has echoed the Sussexes’ sentiment and condemned the Russian military presence in Ukraine. Making his feelings clear via his official Twitter account, the PM revealed he was “appalled” by the events in Ukraine and that he’d already been speaking to the country’s president about “next steps”.

He stated, “I am appalled by the horrific events in Ukraine and I have spoken to President Zelenskyy to discuss next steps. President Putin has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine. The UK and our allies will respond decisively.”

Russian military units have now crossed into Ukraine and Ukrainian officials have announced that the units have seized control of the Chernobyl nuclear plant. As reported by the BBC, the Russian forces bombed military targets near big cities after crossing the border and there are now mounting fears about the violence escalating into a full-scale war.

Meanwhile, reports have suggested that Prince William had a secret MI6 visit on the “dark day” Russia invaded Ukraine. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's message to the people of Ukraine is the first statement to be issued by a member of the Royal Family amid the escalating devastation in Eastern Europe.
