Prince George may never become King despite being third in line to the throne, according to a royal expert.
• Prince George is the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's oldest child and therefore third in line to the throne, after Prince Charles and Prince William.
• However, a royal expert has explained how he may never become King.
• This follows royal news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to name their baby after Prince Philip in a special tribute.
Why might Prince George not become King?
Prince George will likely be waiting decades before he takes the throne.
After Queen Elizabeth II, his grandfather Prince Charles is next in line, followed by his father Prince William.
But royal expert and author of The Last Queen: How Queen Elizabeth II Saved the Monarchy, Clive Irving has claimed that the monarchy could be abolished entirely before George is able to take the throne.
He told the Express, "Before you can assess how William, and later George, might work out, you have to allow for the way the monarchy will look under King Charles, and whether under him it can survive.

"The Queen and her father, George VI, were exceptions in the Windsor line that followed Queen Victoria, the only ones to be exemplary in the role."
He added, "In my view Prince Charles is a reversion to the line of duds, falling far short of the standard set by his mother and grandfather. All polling shows that younger Britons don’t find the monarchy relevant."
"A pared-down monarchy – fewer palaces, no freeloaders and attractively modern family heads – might make a re-boot work, but that’s impossible to judge right now."
And while there's no way to know for certain if the public share Clive Irving's views on Prince Charles and the monarchy it seems Prince William doesn't have too much to worry about as a recent survey by YouGov shows William is currently the most popular royal, behind Queen Elizabeth II.
