Kate Middleton clears up a case of mistaken identity on first trip to Orkney—and fans are delighted
Kate Middleton has been praised for her gentle approach
Kate Middleton cleared up a case of mistaken identity during her and Prince William’s first official joint trip to Orkney in the most adorable way and fans couldn’t be more delighted.
- Kate Middleton has joined Prince William for the second part of their Royal Tour of Scotland and the couple have made their first official trip to Orkney.
- The Duchess of Cambridge resolved a case of mistaken identity at the Marine Energy Centre and her kind approach has been met with praise from royal fans.
- In other royal news, the reason why Prince Charles may avoid Buckingham Palace when he becomes King—and live here instead has been revealed.
Kate Middleton and Prince William are currently undertaking a mini Royal Tour of Scotland and it was during their first official trip to Orkney that Kate was mistaken for someone surprising. The royal tour began on May 21, with Prince William carrying out several solo engagements. It was whilst addressing the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in his capacity as Lord High Commissioner, that he reminisced about meeting Kate Middleton at St Andrews and they have since returned to where their love story began.
Ahead of this, The Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband in Scotland on Monday May 24. They travelled to the stunning islands of Orkney where they visited the European Marine Energy Centre and met with local schoolchildren. And whilst the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might be used to being recognized after so many years as senior royals, it seems that one young fan wasn’t quite sure who was who.
As revealed in sweet videos shared to Twitter by both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge themselves and by a royal fan, who captured the full moment perfectly, one of the children asked Kate if she was Prince William.
“Are you the Prince?” “I’m not the Prince, no, I’m the Duchess of Cambridge.” Very sweet kids meeting William and Kate at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney today: pic.twitter.com/9BsWmLTmROMay 25, 2021
“Are you the prince?” they were heard to ask her, to which Kate kindly replied: “I’m not the Prince, no, I’m the Duchess of Cambridge.”
Royal fans were quick to express their delight at Kate’s gentle clearing up of this misunderstanding, commenting on how lovely it was to see Kate chatting with the children.
‘She loves interacting with the children. So nice to see’ one wrote, whilst another declared: ‘relaxed style, always impeccable They are adorable’.

‘So funny and adorable! She is the best with kids’, someone else wrote and a fellow royal fan replied: 'Adorable click How happy they're to see the real life true Princess'.
Many also light-heartedly pointed out the humor of the moment, with one person commenting: '[B]less them! I think they were expecting a long dress and a tiara'.
bless them! I think they were expecting a long dress and a tiara 🥰May 26, 2021
Whilst this case of mistaken royal identity might be the most recent to have occurred, it certainly isn’t the first to take place. Back in 2012 the Princess Royal was incorrectly introduced as her older brother at a royal engagement and Princess Anne’s reaction to being mistaken for her brother Prince Charles was unforgettably hilarious.
Though there’s another equally iconic royal mix-up that many people pointed out after watching Kate Middleton’s calm interaction. Commenting on Twitter, one wrote: ‘So cute reminded me of that lil girl asking Sarah Are you the Queen? On Eugenie's wedding.’
So cute 😂😂 reminded me of that lil girl asking Sarah Are you the Queen? On Eugenie's wedding.💕May 25, 2021
‘Remember a little girl ask Fergie if she is the queen? So much similarity too cute’, another declared, to which another responded: ‘Yes, that was Robbie Williams daughter’.
Take That star Robbie Williams and his family attended Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank back in October 2018. It was here that his daughter Theodora reportedly asked Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York if she was the Queen. Sarah confirmed she was not, though when Theodora asked if she was a princess instead, she answered that she was.
These hilarious cases of mistaken identity make for memorable moments for the Royal Family. And though it likely came as a surprise to be mistaken for her royal husband, Kate Middleton certainly seemed to enjoy her talk with Orkney’s schoolchildren.
