Fans react to Prince William’s sweet message in support of the Lionesses

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, delighted football fans with his heartfelt message to the Lionesses after their epic Euro 2022 win

Football fan and head of the Football Association Prince William was one of the first to congratulate the Lionesses - England's women's football team - on their historic win against Germany in the Euro 2022 football final.

  • Prince William offered a heartfelt message to the Lionesses to celebrate their big win last night.
  • He told the football team that it was "wonderful to see history in the making tonight at Wembley".
  • In other royal news, the history of the Queen’s Edinburgh wedding bracelet, and the significant reason only one other person has worn it.

Prince William congratulated the England team on Twitter with a heartfelt message from his and Duchess Catherine’s Twitter account, signed off with his signature ‘W’. Prince William and keen football fan Princess Charlotte also congratulated the Lionesses before the final last night.

He wrote after their epic win last night, “Sensational. An incredible win @lionesses and the whole nation couldn’t be prouder of you all. Wonderful to see history in the making tonight at Wembley, congratulations! W.”

Shortly followed by another tweet, saying, "Yes you have and you’ve inspired a nation too", in response to the Lionesses tweeting, ""WE HAVE DONE IT!"

Fans were quick to show their approval of the heartfelt message, with one writing, "Fantastic for a generation of younger women to see, inspiring and motivational, good on them."

While another said, ”Love how you hugged the players! Shades of your amazing Mum there. Xx'

The Queen also posted a touching message to congratulate the Lionesses, which read “My warmest congratulations, and those of my family, go to you all on winning the European Women’s Football Championships.

“It is a significant achievement for the entire team, including your support staff. The Championships and your performance in them have rightly won praise. However, your success goes far beyond the trophy you have so deservedly earned.

“You have all set an example that will be an inspiration for girls and women today, and for future generations. It is my hope that you will be as proud of the impact you have had on your sport as you are of the result today.”

The win was celebrated in living rooms, bars and pubs across the country, with viewers ecstatic to see football finally coming home. The winning goal was scored by after a tense penalty shoot out.
