The Duchess of Cornwall may have been surrounded by rumors after her relationship with Prince Charles became known, but it’s been claimed that she never had any “ambition” to become his wife.
- The Duchess of Cornwall reportedly never had any ambition to "advance herself" to become the Prince of Wales' wife.
- Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla are thought to have met in the '70s, but married in 2005.
- In other Royal News, Prince Harry has arrived in London after a surprise change in travel plans
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles married in April 2005, with both the prince’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry in attendance. However, in the years leading up to their marriage, the royal couple were often on the receiving end of bad feelings from those who felt the Prince of Wales had betrayed his late wife Princess Diana’s memory. Last year, the royal couple disabled comments on some Clarence House Twitter posts.
This came after Duchess Camilla became the target of devastating online abuse, as viewers of The Crown took the fictional events in the show to be fact.
Season 4 focused on the marriage between the Prince and Princess of Wales but also featured Camilla.

Now royal author, Christopher Wilson, has claimed that Camilla never intended to marry Prince Charles. Speaking on the Channel 4 documentary The Real House of Windsor, he reportedly said, “Camilla saw life as Charles’ mistress as a bit of fun, something that would never be made public”.
He went on to reveal, “I don’t think there was any ambition on her part to advance herself to become the wife of the Prince of Wales.”
Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla's relationship
It’s understood that Prince Charles and the now-Duchess Camilla first met in the 1970s, yet the Royal Family did not initially consider Camilla to be the perfect bride for the heir to the throne. Instead, Camilla went on to marry Andrew Parker Bowles and the couple had two children, before divorcing in 1995.
Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 and they became devoted parents to Prince William and Prince Harry. The Prince and Princess of Wales went on to divorce in 1996, a year before Princess Diana’s tragic death in Paris.
It’s understood that Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla began appearing in public together two years later. The couple later married, with the Queen’s blessing, but without her in attendance, in 2005.
Though some might have wondered at the time about whether Camilla would take the title ‘Princess of Wales’ which had become associated with Princess Diana, they soon had their answer.
Camilla became Duchess of Cornwall upon her marriage to Prince Charles and it’s been reported that upon his ascension to the throne, she will be known as Princess Consort rather than Queen.
