Buckingham Palace gets £90k makeover ahead of Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Buckingham Palace is undergoing a £90k makeover ahead of the Platinum Jubilee, to ensure the Queen's most famous residence is in perfect condition for the summer celebrations.
- Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing a major paintwork job ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June.
- The £90k spruce-up is just one part of a £369 million project to renovate the royal building over the next few years.
- In other royal news, Kate Middleton's green dress paired with accessories dedicated to the Queen is the regal outfit we've all been waiting for.
The Queen's most iconic residence is undergoing a major revamp in the buildup to the Platinum Jubilee 2022—and we can't wait to see the final results.
A team of three decorators was spotted painting the iron gates of Buckingham Palace on Monday, as part of a large-scale renovation project to be completed by 2027. With each painter taking home an annual salary of £30,000 (as advertised on the Royal Household's website), it's estimated that this latest spruce-up will cost the taxpayer about £90,000.
The update comes shortly after Changing Rooms designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen slammed Buckingham Palace as 'run-down country house hotel' and offered to redecorate its interior himself.
The Queen no longer lives at the London landmark, having reportedly never felt fully comfortable there. She now resides at Windsor Castle in Berkshire, where she spent much of the pandemic with the late Prince Philip.
While Her Majesty may have permanently moved out of the 775-room mansion, it hasn't been completely shunned by the Royal Family. It's understood that Prince Charles will make Buckingham Palace a ‘flat above the shop’ when he is King, despite widespread speculation that he also dislikes the historic building.
Prince Charles intends to move into Buckingham Palace when he becomes King
"Despite what everybody thinks about him not wanting to live there, he will certainly have accommodation there. But it will be a much more modest flat-above-the-shop situation akin to that of the Prime Minister at Downing Street," a royal source told the Mail on Sunday.
"Both the Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall are very practical and see that the reigning Monarch must live at Buckingham Palace."
The couple currently live in Clarence House, less than a mile away from the palace. They moved into the royal residence together in 2003, shortly after the death of the Queen Mother and two years before their civil wedding.
