Looking for your next true crime obsession? Susanna Reid’s ‘Death Row: Countdown to Execution’ documentary is coming to ITV.
The Good Morning Britain host will be interviewing a death row inmate in Texas, which is home to the most active death chamber in the United States. In the two-part series, Susanna will be speaking to inmate Patrick Murphy.
He was one of the members of the notorious ‘Texas 7’ gang who violently murdered a police officer whilst on the run. Alongside six other inmates, he took part in one of the biggest prison breakouts in American history.
During his final days, Patrick will be speaking to Susanna about the breakout, and the events that led him to death row. The in-depth interview will examine how he feels about his fate, and his role in the crime.
Speaking about the documentary, Susanna said "This is a journey to a pretty bleak place, a maximum security prison, where there are men being held who know that they are facing a sentence of death…”
"I just wonder what he’s thinking, whether he thinks he deserves his punishment, whether he will ask forgiveness, and what his thoughts are on the years and years he has spent in prison."
Alongside the man himself, the documentary features the lawyers working on Murphy’s case, and his son who grew up not knowing his father. By speaking to those closest to the crime, viewers will get an in-depth look at how this planned execution affects more than just Murphy.
His son Patrick III has only met him three times in his whole life, all since his arrest. The documentary will shed light on this strained relationship, and how he feels about his father’s sentence.
Murphy himself is currently appealing the case, telling Susanna “I disagree with the reason why, but I’m at peace with what may happen… You hope for the best and expect the worst. And I’m expecting the worst.”
Audiences can watch ‘Death Row: Countdown To Execution’ on ITV at 9pm on Thursday June 13th.
