To the shock of her fans, Rebel Wilson just revealed that, several years ago, she was harassed by a male costar on the set of a movie.
Rebel, who currently looks almost unrecognizable in the Netflix movie Senior Year given her dramatic weight loss, did not mention the name of the accused actor, but she did detail the situation she found herself in.
She recalled her castmate calling her into a room, pulling down his pants and then asking her to perform oral sex in front of friends.
"It was awful and disgusting," she said about the situation in an interview with PEOPLE (opens in new tab). "And all the behavior afterwards, this was all before #MeToo, where they kind of tried to destroy me and my career. If it had happened after #MeToo, then I could have just blasted them."
Not many know that Rebel is actually a trained lawyer (she graduated from the University of New South Wales with a law degree). As a result, she knew the importance of documenting what had just happened. "I called my rep," she explained. "I got certain things in writing about what happened. Definitely amongst industry circles, I made sure people knew what happened."
In the interview, Rebel also addressed the reason why she didn't quit the movie that she was working on at the time. "Why did I stay in that situation [...] with that awful guy? I should have left," she said. "It wasn't worth it but, at the same time, I was like, 'Oh well, do the right thing, be a professional and finish the movie.' Now I would never do that. I thought even complaining to my agency was a big step. And to complain to the studio. I found out I was like the fourth person to complain about the guy. Such gross behavior, but a lot of women have had it way worse."
What would she do if a similar situation occurred to her now? "If it happened again, I would probably stand up for myself even more just because of the bravery of the other women that have stood up and now allowed me an opportunity," she said.
Needless to say, we stand behind you, Rebel.
