Meryl Streep hilariously thought Jennifer Lawrence and Jonah Hill were calling her an 'old goat'

It seems like the wonderful Meryl Streep had a bit of a (hilarious!) misunderstanding with her Don’t Look Up co-stars while on set, actually believing that Jonah Hill and Jennifer Lawrence had been calling her an “old goat” while referring to the actress as the G.O.A.T. (that would be… the Greatest Of All Time).

Jennifer Lawrence—who just revealed why filming a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chamalet was 'the most annoying day' of her life—discussed the funny mishap while on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

"We offhandedly call Meryl the G.O.A.T. and we were doing a photoshoot and I said something about G.O.A.T. and Meryl said, 'Yes, that's right, just tell the old goat where to go'." Jennifer recalled to the late-night host. "And I was like, 'Meryl, you know that G.O.A.T. means greatest of all time... right? And she was like 'oh, no!' And we [explained that we weren’t] calling her an old goat this whole time!”

Jonah also addressed the accident while on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. "Meryl Streep's actually cool," he said to Jimmy. "And she's the best actor. In fact, we've been doing press for this movie and in the interviews the past couple of days, I keep saying, 'Oh, and you know, getting to work with Meryl, she's the G.O.A.T.' Right? Then, today, we're doing a press conference and she's like, 'You know, and Jonah is so comfortable with me, he's been calling me a goat all week.' And I'm like, 'What the f---?"

The actors have been making the rounds promoting their latest film, Don’t Look Up—a new Netflix movie also starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ariana Grande, Chris Evans, Cate Blanchett and Matthew Perry, among others.

Set to drop on the streaming giant this Friday, the dark comedy tells the story of two low-level astronomers (Jennifer and Leonardo) that embark on a media tour to convince the world population that an approaching comet will surely destroy planet Earth.

In the film, Meryl takes on the role of United States President Janie Orlean, who is skeptical about the veracity of the astronomers' claims. Jonah plays Jason Orlean, the President's son and Chief of Staff.

Always funny—both on and off the screen—Meryl is actually known for her humor (although, this time around, she wasn’t really the one delivering the joke!).

How can we, for example, forget last year’s incredible video call during the coronavirus lockdown? Meryl left fans in hysterics after a boozy video call with fellow Hollywood icons Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald, during which they sang the now-late Stephen Sondheim tune The Ladies Who Lunch while treating themselves to a tipple or two.

We’ll say it loud and clear—Meryl Streep is a national treasure.
