You're currently filming a fourth series of Vikings, how's it going? I'm having fun on set exploring new ways to show different sides of my character, the shieldmaiden Lagertha. After four years playing the same role, it's always a challenge to try to discover new aspects of the character that haven't been exposed yet. But I welcome the challenge. It's wonderful to be able to portray such a strong, formidable character who still embraces her femininity as a woman. When did you know you wanted to be an actress? During my high school and university years, I trained actors in martial arts on various movie sets. I was mesmerised by the set designs, the costumes, and all the different aspects that go into telling a story and evolving a character. That inspired me to move to New York and get the proper training and acting experience. If you weren't an actress, what would you be doing? I love building and creating new ventures. I started my I cherish moments with family and friends the most first martial arts school at 16 and developed three schools by 21 years of age. Entrepreneurship and creating your own path excites me. What's your favourite way to spend your downtime? I love travelling, exploring new territories and cultures. We live in a world that is rich and rewarding, and travelling opens up your eyes, as well as your heart. You're also an ambassador for Raymond Weil, how did that come about? I received a call from my agent that the CEO, Elie Bernheim, is a big fan of Vikings - and had asked if I'd be interested in the role. I was very excited about it because the brand shares my similar passion for celebrating the arts, strength and beauty in women. What was your first watch? When I was nine years old my father surprised me with a beautiful necklace - a locket - which was actually an open-faced watch when I unlocked it. It was the moment I realised how intricate and complex watchmaking can be - and how it can also be a lovely piece of significant jewellery.
What's important to you in a watch now? Both the functionality and the aesthetics. I'm very active, constantly travelling and on the go, so I need a watch that can accessorise and be worn with many different outfits. You can wear Raymond Weil watches every day and take them into the evening. What does time mean to you? When I think about time, I think about moments. The moments I have with family and close friends are what I cherish the most. When I look down at my watch, I'm reminded how precious time is and also how exciting it can be. You never know what the future will bring.
What can you always spare ten minutes for? I can always spare time to connect with family and close friends.
What do you never seem to have enough time for? I never seem to have the time to clear my emails - or check off all the things on my to-do list!
What's next for you? I'm currently looking at various new scripts, as well as a digital project that looks exciting... stay tuned!
