One for the slightly more experienced jewellery makers, the results are well worth the extra effort.
You do need to purchase additional tools

Budding jewellery-makers, listen up! Now is the time to roll up your sleeves and get to grips with precision tools and creative crafting – and if you’re not professionally trained, no matter! Jewellery making kits have been enjoying something of a surge in popularity during 2020, as people turn to new hobbies and activities to relieve the stresses of life in the midst of a pandemic. But less of that, and more of the tools that are helping to open up the world of creative crafts to a wider audience.
Specifically, we’re taking a closer look at Grace & Flora, a jewellery brand specialising in handmade, sterling silver pieces inspired by the world around us. The brainchild of Britain-based designer Kate Harvey, whose degree in Zoology no doubt influenced the natural world references in her jewellery, Grace & Flora came about after she revisited an old hobby (silversmithing) for a little stress relief. The part-time project became something bigger, evolving into the jewellery brand that exists today.
As well as selling a gorgeous line of ready-made, sterling silver bracelets, necklaces, earrings and rings (most of which can be personalised) she also sells jewellery making kits. These differ from many of the bead-based products on the market, focussing as they do on silver designs which have a more premium and classic feel. The kits also come with a link to a video tutorial to help guide you through the process – we love that extra care and attention to detail.

Silver Bow Necklace Jewellery Making Kit
Great for beginners, this is relatively fiddly to complete, but comes with enough wire for plenty of practice runs. You’ll ideally need three sets of jewellery pliers (round nose, flat or chain nose) plus a pair of cutters – none of which are included in the kit, but all of which can be picked up in stores like Hobbycraft for as little as £3.50 each.
Birds Nest Necklace Jewellery Making Kit
A really unique idea, this is unlike any charm we’ve ever seen before. Even better, it’s remarkably easy to make. The kit includes 6 teeny tiny freshwater pearls (enough to make two necklaces), silver plated wire and a sterling silver chain in a choice of two lengths. The background birdsong in the tutorial video is a nice touch too!
Silver Beaded Pearl Bracelet Jewellery Making Kit
The most time-consuming of the Grace & Flora kits we tried, this is the perfect activity-based treat for lazy afternoons. It includes a length of wire, silver chain, 6 freshwater pearls, jump rings and all the hardware you need. As before, you will need a range of jewellery pliers to complete the process.
How easy are Grace and Flora jewellery making kits to use?
In our opinion, these are a slight step up from beginners jewellery kits, requiring specialist tools and a higher level of concentration to complete. The end results are well worth the effort though, rewarding you with pretty, wearable pieces that look far from homemade.
Each kit directs you to a video tutorial, as well as lists of the materials included and any additional tools you might need. There’s also a handy link to other suppliers if you’ve caught the jewellery making bug and plan to expand your new skills into other projects.
All video tutorials are around 10 minutes long and really easy to follow (even for jewellery-making novices like us). Just press pause if you need time to catch up.
Anything else we should know?
We love products that come in minimal packaging, and were pleased to see that Grace and Flora do too. Neat, compact and recyclable, all kits come in hessian pouches ready to store your new makes in.
Summing up...Grace and Flora silver jewellery making kits
These products are a must-try for anyone interested in making their own silver jewellery. We suggest you stock up on a few – they’ll guarantee an afternoon (or three) well spent.
