With the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the world it has seemed like a somewhat hopeless time for many.

People across the world have been struck down by the virus, frontline staff are swept off their feet and many are stuck in the house quarantined or self-isolating without being able to see friends, families and loved ones.

However, it turns out there might be a very big positive to come out of everything that has been going on.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have revealed that they have seen a massive increased in the number of rescue pets being adopted since the virus was declared a global pandemic.

Between 16th March and 22nd March over 150 animals were adopted from the shelter, with 86 dogs being rescued and 69 cats.

This number has more than doubled compared to the same week last year, when only 42 dogs and 29 cats were adopted from the home.

“We want to thank all these new owners for thinking of rescue pets at such a challenging time,” said Rob Young, Battersea’s Head of Operations.

“All three of our Battersea centres are now closed to the public, but many of our animals are now in loving homes or out on temporary foster with our staff and volunteers,” he continued.

“Battersea are still caring for around 100 animals at our three centres and working hard to ensure each and every dog and cat continues to get the treatment, care, love, play and interaction they need.

“Those wishing to rehome a dog or cat are welcome to fill out a rehoming application on our website and, as soon as we’re able, we’ll be reopening and working to continue finding new homes for our wonderful animals.

“In the meantime, if you’d like to support Battersea, please consider making a donation towards the care of our dogs and cats by visiting donate.battersea.org.uk”.

What a lovely consequence to come out of such a tricky time!
