The First Lady and the Duke of Sussex came together on Monday to pay tribute to the service members who were due to participate in this year’s Warrior Games, which unfortunately had to be canceled due to COVID-19 concerns.
Founded by the US Department of Defense back in 2010, the annual event celebrates the resilience and endurance of the country’s active and veteran military service members through a series of athletic races and games.
Prince Harry and Dr. Jill Biden, who were both expected to attend the competition's 11th anniversary in Florida, addressed those who missed out on the exciting event via an emotional video call instead.
Speaking from the White House, the First Lady delivered a passionate speech to members of the military in which she shared her gratitude for their commitment to protecting the US in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.
“There was a call to defend the values we hold dear as we wage a global war on terror. A courageous group of men and women stepped forward to say—me—I will go,” she said.

Jill also acknowledged Harry in her message, praising him for his own contribution to the British army. The Duke of Sussex famously joined the Armed Forces in 2005, rising the ranks from Cadet to Captain over a period of ten years. He undertook two tours of Afghanistan during his tenure before officially leaving in 2015 to pursue other projects, many of which focused on helping to improve the lives of veterans and their families.

“And that includes you, Harry. You live by a simple principle—serve together, recover together,” Jill added.
“Your brothers and sisters and arms are connected by something so much deeper than the borders that separate us, and you’ve dedicated your time, talents, and heart to lifting up service members from around the globe.”
Jill went on to share her disbelief that seven years have passed since she met Harry at the inaugural Invictus Games in the UK, calling the memories of it "still fresh in my mind." The Duke established the Paralympic-style competition after being inspired by the Warrior Games, launching its first event in London in 2014.
Prince Harry also checked into the video call from his California home to pay respects to the servicemembers and to share his regret at its disappointing cancellation. "I am so sorry we're not all together," he said. "The pandemic has certainly changed or flipped life upside down for so many people."
He went on to celebrate the hard work of the 300 athletes who were due to participate in the event, adding, "As far as most of us are concerned, you guys have already won."
