The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 4 is drawing ever closer and fans can’t help wondering when the hit period comedy-drama will be returning and who will be joining the all-star cast.

Fans of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel have been waiting a long time to see the Emmy-winning show return and with the show’s main star Rachel Brosnahan having recently revealed that filming has wrapped, it looks like they will soon be rewarded for their patience. Set in 1950s and 1960s New York, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel follows housewife Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, played brilliantly by Rachel, as she discovers her hidden talent for stand-up comedy.

Deciding on the stage name Mrs Maisel, Midge pursues a comedy career, managed by Susie Myerson, played by Alex Borstein.

And with season 3's heart-stopping ending leaving them in a very precarious position where their dreams of comedy superstardom look set to fail, fans can’t help wondering where things will pick up in season 4.

But when is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel coming back, what will it be about and who is in the cast?

*Warning: spoilers for season 3 ahead*

When is The Marvelous Mrs Maisel coming back?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel fans were left more than a little excited back in 2019 when it was confirmed that the hit period comedy-drama series would be back for season 4. However, hopes of quickly returning to binge-watching Midge Maisel’s rise to comedy greatness were dashed when production was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

With filming only able to begin in January this year, fans have had to be extra patient as they wait for the fourth season of the popular show. Though an official release date for The Marvelous Mrs Maisel has yet to be confirmed, things do seem to have progressed quickly.

Lead star Rachel Brosnahan recently took to social media to reveal that season 4 had finished filming, as she thanked everyone who made it possible during such a difficult time.

“And that’s a wrap on @maiseltv season 4. I am so in awe of this crew who had each other’s backs and kept each other safe during this strange and challenging time in the world outside our bubble,” the actor wrote.

News of the renewal came the same month The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 3 landed on Amazon Prime, though since then our screens sadly have been a Midge Maisel-free zone.

In a statement released at the time, the show’s creator and EP Amy Sherman-Palladino and EP Daniel Palladino declared: “We were thrilled to hear that for the fourth time, we do not have to pack up and vacate the premises.

“We’d like to thank Amazon for all their faith and support, their partnership and enthusiasm, and for letting us hang with our favorite people, the cast and crew of Maisel, for a little while longer.”

The last two seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premiered in December, creating a wonderful tradition that many might hope will continue with season 4. Though with filming having only just wrapped, we’ll just have to wait and see whether we might get to dive back into the period drama later this year!

What will The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 4 be about?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 4’s plot has not yet been revealed, though given where we left Midge in season 3, it seems likely we’ll be watching some equally dramatic and emotional moments unfold. As season 3 drew to a close, fans were left stunned after Midge and her manager Susie ended up fired from the second part of singer Shy Baldwin’s tour, after Midge joked about Shy’s sexuality whilst on stage.

Shy previously gave Midge her big break by making her his opening act and their removal from the tour comes as a devastating blow. Especially since Susie has now gambled away Midge’s savings, intended to act as a down-payment on her old apartment.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 3 finale left the pair at rock bottom and it's from here that season 4 is expected to start. This was something creator Amy previously discussed during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, explaining: “I think we’re going to pick up right after that. We may be doing a little jump within the season, but when we first start up we want to [stay in that time].

“I mean, what’s the fun of totally destroying someone’s soul and heart and not getting to see the aftermath? That’s what comedy’s made of, soul-crushing defeat.”

Given the point at which Midge and Susie find themselves and the huge secret Susie is keeping from her friend, fans could well see things go from bad to worse before they get better as the truth will surely rise to the surface.

Who’s in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel cast for season 4?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 4 is expected to see all of our favourite actors return, including Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak and Caroline Aaron. But some pretty impressive stars have now joined the already brilliant cast.

And it seems there’s set to be quite the Gilmore Girls reunion, as Kelly Bishop, who played formidable matriarch Emily Gilmore, is taking on a role in season 4.

Taking to Twitter to share the news, the show’s official account teased their new cast-member, posting a clip of Kelly in her stunning The Marvelous Mrs Maisel costume. Opening the caption with the phrase ‘If looks could kill’, it seems that Kelly’s new character will definitely not be holding back…

And Kelly’s reunion with Gilmore Girls’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino will not be the only one this season. As reported by Town&Country magazine Milo Ventimiglia will be joining the cast of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 4. The actor, who is perhaps best known for his role on US drama series This Is Us previously collaborated with Amy on Gilmore Girls.

It’s not clear who his new character is, though Milo and Rachel have been pictured together as they filmed in New York. In the photos, Milo's character can be seen handing Midge a beautiful bunch of flowers, suggesting that he could potentially be playing her new love interest in season 4.

And for anyone who just can't wait until then to see Midge back taking centre stage, there's never been a better time to catch up on all The Marvelous Mrs Maisel episodes on Amazon Prime before the season 4 premiere!
