Netflix has released a new set of still images from the next highly-anticipated season of The Crown, which will feature a brand new cast.

The Crown season 5 looks to be one of the most turbulent seasons yet, focusing on the relationship breakdown between Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana.

The pictures of The Crown season 5 show Imelda Staunton making her debut as the Queen, as well as an image from a family holiday for Charles, played by Dominic West and Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, with their sons in happier times.

Pictures from later in the Netflix series show a stark contrast between a lonely-looking Diana wearing an evening gown, and Prince Charles and a young Camilla, played by Olivia Williams, looking cozy together during an evening out watching what appears to be a firework display.

Alongside the pictures, Netflix wrote, "Welcome to the ‘90s. A first look at Season Five of The Crown, arriving 9th November."

Elizabeth Debicki, who plays the late Princess Diana in the series, explains why this season of The Crown is particularly unique.

“That’s the amazing thing about playing these people at this time, because in the journey of ‘The Crown’ so far out of all the seasons, this is the most visual content we have of the Royal Family,” Debicki told Netflix’s fansite Tudum when the images were released on its website.

“In the ‘90s everything had started to be filmed and also it was the birth of the 24-hour news cycle so there’s just this incredible amount of content that we have access to.

"Diana was the most photographed person in the world at that time. As an actor you open the portal and this huge tsunami of information comes at you. I happily swam around in it.”

Fans were quick to show their excitement at the pictures of The Crown and the new season, which will hit screens in November.

"Obsessed," wrote one fan, while another said, "CANNOT WAIT."

Though many also commented that they're still waiting to see the official trailer.

"WHERE’s THE TRAILER?!" wrote one The Crown fan in capitals. While another asked, "Where's The Official Trailer???????"

While Netflix has already released a teaser trailer earlier in the year, the official trailer has yet to be released.

Season 5 of The Crown will be available for streaming from 19 November 2022
