It doesn't take much for us to jump on the anti-big light bandwagon, but with the colder months finally here, Miranda Hart's cosy living room has officially sealed the deal on layered lighting reigning supreme.

If you haven't heard of layered lighting before, now is the time of year to get on board. It's a fantastic way to make your home cosy during the autumn and winter months, creating a more welcoming, relaxing environment in any space.

While it usually entails a few warm-toned lamps and some ambient wall lighting, the actress and now Traitors contestant Miranda Hart has taken it to the next level by adding extra illuminating layers.

Whether you want to make your bedroom cosier or are willing to try anything to keep the dreaded big light off, smaller light sources are the best place to start.

Although Miranda's living room is pretty spacious and has particularly high ceilings, from what we can see on her Instagram @realmirandahart, the space still feels intimate, homey and welcoming. And it's not just the warm minimalist aesthetic she seems to have adopted.

Miranda has a variety of lights in the one room, from the table lamp next to the sofas to the dual-sided wall sconces in the adjoining hallway. There's no sign of an overhead light.

It's also clear from the ambience that she's chosen the right light colour temperature for the room too, with most warm-toned lighting.

Of course, this type of lighting is a great way to make a dark room brighter, especially through the winter months, but it also creates a more relaxed atmosphere.

Looking at Miranda's living room, with low-level slouched sofas and a sunken floor, there's no denying that comfort is a priority in this space. The addition of numerous lamps and even a rather charming curtain of string lights only helps deliver on that.

You can recreate this in any room in your home; even if you want to make your kitchen cosier, some lamps dotted around, with a warm LED under-cabinet light, will do the trick. No more SAD interiors this winter.

If you want to take it a step further, you can add layered lighting to your garden too. This is a great way of keeping your garden functional even when the early nights hit.
