1. Joss & Main

Joss & Main (opens in new tab) is an offshoot of Wayfair which means you'll find competitive prices and plenty of deals. However, J&M is considered a 'cooler' variant of its parent company. It's a suitable option if you want to give your outdoor space a funkier feel but without paying the premium costs more exclusive design houses would command.

Consider this brand if... you're seeking deals on trendy outdoor pieces
Avoid this brand if...
you have the budget for more premium builds

2. Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach is one of the best outdoor furniture brands in the US

Design WIthin Reach (opens in new tab)'s MO is to 'make authentic modern design accessible.' Though primarily known for its indoor pieces, DWR's selection of outdoor furniture is worth checking out if you'd prefer to veer your patio aesthetic away from current cookie-cutter trends. This is far from a value label and sitewide sales are rare—but in return, you'll receive quality builds that'll last you many seasons. If your budget doesn't stretch this far, check out our guide to the best outdoor furniture deals you can snap up this month.

Consider this brand if... authentic, mid-century designs appeal to you
Avoid this brand if...

Consider this brand if... sustainability is as important to you as style
Avoid this brand if... you're spending under $2,000 (shipping is $99 otherwise)

4. Outer

Outer (opens in new tab) furniture is as comfortable as it is mindful. In addition to crafting sustainable, understated furniture to suit all types of outdoor spaces, this brand cultivates healthy working relationships with the farmers and manufacturers who help bring their visions to fruition. Discounts aren't terribly common here, but you'll avail of furniture that's built to last—and also recyclable when you're ready to move on to something new. A great choice if you're looking to make small steps towards sustainable living.

Consider this brand if... you want functional, eco-friendly pieces
Avoid this brand if...
you need to be more deliberate with your budget

World Market (opens in new tab) is renowned for its globally-sourced outdoor furniture and frequent sales. You won't be left wanting with their wide selection of pieces, either—from full-on sectional sets to simple Adirondack chairs. And if you're keen to see your furniture up close before buying it, World Market has almost 250 brick-and-mortar stores across the US, although note that several items are online-only.

6. Birch Lane

Birch Lane (opens in new tab) is another member of the Wayfair family, with the theme here being 'classic, timeless design.' Naturally, like its parent company, Birch Lane is no stranger to sales—although it's not exactly 'budget' pricing, and separate protection plans are offered in lieu of product warranties. Still, relative to rival stores like Pottery Barn or West Elm, Birch Lane is a more cost-effective option overall.

Consider this brand if... you're on the hunt for rustic, farmhouse-style pieces
Avoid this brand if...
you'd rather not purchase without a warranty upfront

7. Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel (opens in new tab)'s characteristic minimalist look will fit homes that want an infusion of modern urban design—whether you're already situated in a city or have a home in the suburbs. Prices are on the exorbitant side, but C&B does offer regular sales to soften the blow there a little. The brand is also dedicated to using quality-tested and sustainably-sourced materials for all of its pieces.

Consider this brand if... urban modern chic and sustainability are your vibe
Avoid this brand if...
your budget is limited (check out CB2 (opens in new tab) instead)

You'll also find plenty of smaller touches to complete your backyard oasis, such as umbrellas, pillows, planters, and rugs. Prices are mid-to-high range, but the brand does offer occasional sales so you can save some cash.

Consider this brand if... you have a large yard (plus a grand vision for it)
Avoid this brand if...
you need to watch your spending

When is the best time to buy outdoor furniture?

The best time to buy outdoor furniture is when you need it. The second best time is right after the height of summer entertaining season, think late August to October.

"Prices fall between 50% and 70% at the end of [summer]," says Andrew Gaugler of DIY site Best of Machinery (opens in new tab), "Stores are trying to clear out their summer stock to make space for fall inventory." Gaugler also notes that the later you wait to buy since last summer, "the higher your savings will be."

With Memorial Day coming up, you can find some substantial markdowns during outdoor furniture sales that are happening right now. While you may not score the absolute lowest prices of the year at the moment, there are still some decent savings to be found if you're keen to update your outdoor space just in time for summer.
