Prince Philip has died aged 99 at Windsor Castle, weeks after he was reunited with the Queen after leaving hospital.

Prince Philip has passed away at Windsor Castle, where he recently reunited with his beloved wife the Queen after his hospital stay earlier this year. The Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen had been married for 73 years and Prince Philip was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

The official statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The Duke of Edinburgh retired from royal duties in 2017 and has since spent the majority of his time at the Queen's Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

The monarch has once described him as her "strength and stay" and had been supported by her husband throughout her reign.

His devastating passing comes several weeks after he was happily reunited with the Queen at their Berkshire home after his recent time in hospital, where he underwent a “successful procedure” for a “pre-existing heart condition”.

Upon returning to Windsor Castle, Prince Philip issued a statement, thanking everyone who looked after him during this time, as well as those who sent their good wishes.

How long had the Queen and Prince Philip been married?

Prince Philip and the Queen had been married for 73 years, after announcing their engagement to the world in 1947. He even had gifted the Queen a personalized message in the form of an engraved ring when they married.

After many happy years together, there were still many signs to show how Prince Philip was “still as charmed” as ever by his wife

Throughout their marriage, the royal couple also had a particularly heartwarming daily habit

Whilst there are many facts people might not know about Prince Philip, he was a proud father to their four children, grandfather to eight grandchildren, and great-grandfather to ten.

Princess Eugenie gave birth to her son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank in February and is believed to have chosen Philip as a middle name in honor of her beloved grandfather. Whilst Zara Tindall, who recently gave birth to her third child, named him Lucas Philip Tindall. Prince Philip was no doubt incredibly touched by this tribute from his granddaughters.

Our thoughts are with the Queen and the Royal Family at this difficult time.
