“There’s no big secret to my success in the world of wine. Whether I’m writing or presenting on TV, I just speak to my audience as if they were my girlfriends and it seems to strike a chord,” reflects Helen McGinn, 53,.

“My love affair with wine started when I joined the Wine Society at Exeter University. It began as a bit of a joke and a cost-effective way to get a few drinks. But I soon found I loved meeting the winemakers, learning about the grapes and wine regions and how much more there was to wine than just the contents of my glass.

“Once I left university in 1995, I knew it was the field in which I wanted to work. Whilst relatively rare for a woman to be a wine expert at that time, I was fortunate that the head Tesco wine buyer was a brilliant woman called Anne Marie Bostock, and her team was 75% female.

"I jumped at the chance when I was offered a junior buyer role there and it was a wonderful job; writing the copy on the labels, selecting our range and visiting wineries all around the world.

“There were occasions when male vineyard owners would take a while to realise that I was indeed the buyer and that there wasn’t some senior chap about to turn up behind me. But, once we got talking, it never proved too much of an issue.”

Knackered mum inspiration

“After about 10 years at Tesco, I moved to work for a wine start-up at home, having had the first of my three children. By far my busiest time was 4pm every Friday when my phone would light up with friends and family, especially my girlfriends, standing in the wine aisles with no idea what to buy.

"Knowing how much they loved a decent glass at the end of a long week, I decided to start a blog.

“I still remember the Tuesday night when it all started in 2009. I’d just got my daughter to bed and wrote my first post recommending a couple of wines and explaining why I thought they were worth a try. Without a huge amount of thought, I called it The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club – a name which has stuck and I still use on Instagram.

“Initially, my following was just friends and family but slowly it grew, and I enjoyed writing my fun weekly posts, encouraging people to experiment beyond the tried and tested Pinot Grigio."

An unexpected publishing deal

“I thought it was a joke when, a few years later, I received an email from an editor at Pan Macmillan saying she’d read the blog and wanted to turn it into a book. My wonderful publisher, Liz Gough, had realised that many women were intimidated by wine as a category, that often male sommeliers didn’t help make it any less scary and she said she loved my chatty, down-to-earth approach.

“So, in 2013 The Knackered Mother’s Wine Guide was published – a conversational read, not full of maps and science but describing wines that were worth trying to readers, just like I would to a friend.

“After the success of the book, I started a wine column in the Daily Mail and no one was more surprised than me when soon afterwards I was approached to be the wine expert on Alan Titchmarsh’s daytime TV chat show.

"Right up until the moment we went on air, I thought someone was going to check whether I had any TV experience. They didn’t and so I just got on with it!

“Thankfully, it went well, and I soon also began appearing on This Morning and, eventually, Saturday Kitchen Live.”

“I’m so glad that this broadcast stage of my career came along a bit later in life for me. If I’d been younger, I think I’d have overthought it and worried too much that I didn’t know what I was doing, whereas now I just enjoy every moment – especially the hair and make-up!

“I still have 'pinch me' moments when I find myself on Saturday Kitchen squeezed next to actual Idris Elba around the ‘kitchen table’ helping him choose the best wine to accompany someone like chef Marcus Wareing's delicious dishes but it’s an absolute joy to work on.

“I also write fiction (five novels to date), and wine is still a key feature. My latest, Under a Riviera Moon was set in Provence, inspired in part by the beautiful Domaine Mirabeau and there are plentiful rosé recommendations not-so-secretly planted throughout!”

The joy of a good wine list

“I had no real career plan when I set out, but each step I’ve taken has helped open a door to a new opportunity. I love that my WhatsApp still pings like crazy most weekends with photos coming in from friends in restaurants asking me what wine they should order.

“A good wine list is up there with my favourite literature, although my family has now set a time limit on how long I’m allowed to read one before I make my selection. Sometimes I go online prior to meals out to indulge myself with a good, long look at the options before we arrive.

“Ultimately, wine is such a personal taste experience. There’s no right or wrong, so I always encourage people to experiment with all sorts of grapes and price points. As I’ve got older, I’m drinking a bit less than I used to and life’s simply too short to drink bad wine, so I like to make each glass count!”

It's long been said that drinking one glass of red wine in the evening is good for the health of your heart - but what does Dr Amir Khan have to say about it?

In an appearance on Lorraine, Dr Amir revealed, "I want to put a myth to bed really here. Some people still believe this myth that a small amount of red wine is good for your heart. Actually, that was based on flawed research. And those studies in the past didn't account for that."

So why was the research so flawed? Well, while the researchers focused on the fact that the healthiest participants all shared a common love for red wine and drank it regularly, they didn't take into account all of their other similarities – and it was those that actually made them healthier, not their nightly glass of red.

"Red wine drinkers were more likely to be wealthier, more educated, more physically active and eat more vegetables," Dr Amir explains. "And once those things were accounted for in future studies, the risks of drinking even a small amount of red wine outweighed any benefits."

And there are a lot of risks that do come with drinking, the expert says. "The truth about alcohol, Lorraine, is that there is no safe level of alcohol to drink," he said. "Even those 14 unit limits recommended weekly by the NHS are limits - you know, it's a compromise. Ideally, no alcohol is better than some."

Then comes the science-y bit. "When we do drink alcohol, it's turned into something called acetaldehyde by our body, which damages our cells. It also increases our hormones, insulin and estrogen, [and] too many of them can affect cell division and increase the risk of a mutation and cancer.

"Alcohol has been linked to mouth cancer, voice box cancer, throat cancer, esophagus, stomach cancer, liver, bowel and breast cancer."

So avoiding alcohol, or cutting down, is clearly a good thing to do for your health. But it's not just about avoiding illnesses, there are tonnes of other benefits you can see from drinking less too. Positive changes can happen to the body and mind when you stop drinking alcohol even just for a month, like improved sleep patterns and, as you avoid the impact of alcohol on your skin, you'll wake up with a radiant, dewy glow.

Even better, experts say you can see results in less than four weeks if you do stop drinking and there are plenty of tips for drinking less alcohol to help you along the way.

But, as Dr Amir says, "We're not saying, you know, you absolutely must not drink. That is the recommendation but it's about making an informed decision before you pour that glass of wine."

We can't see what shoes Emilia chose to finish off her outfit with, but with the wide-leg of her jumpsuit, any style of shoe would've worked really well. For a fun touch, a pair of metallic gold ballet flats or heels would tie in the jewellery beautifully and add a super festive flair, while some chunky suede boots or heeled leather booties would give a practical, winter-ready finish.

We also don't know what style of coat she opted for, but a leather jacket, especially if you're going to wear leather or suede heels, would look effortlessly elegant and add a fun edgy touch to your look, while a tailored longline trench coat would bring a sophisticated flair.

Mulled wine is a winter drink that has long brought on the festive feels, but its origins are steeped in medicinal benefits – and, when drunk in moderation, experts believe it could offer some wellbeing benefits you may not have known about.

Romans first heated red wine as a means of defending their bodies against the harsh winter months and, as its popularity continued throughout the Middle Ages, various spices were added to avoid sickness. This could mean that a glass or two over the festive season is good for us – so, what are you waiting for? Bottoms up!

1. It may help ward off colds

Red wine, the main ingredient of mulled wine, is packed full of antioxidants, polyphenols and flavonoids, all of which are immune boosting. "Flavonoids have antiviral properties, which means they can help build up your immune system and, in theory, keep those winter colds at bay," says Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy.

Citrus fruits added to the wine amp up the vitamin C content and many of the traditional spices thrown in also have warming, antiviral powers – brilliant at staving off colds and flu.

2. It could relieve trapped wind

Mulled wine contains many gut-friendly ingredients. "Cinnamon is good for gastrointestinal problems, nutmeg helps soothe indigestion and star anise contains anethole – a compound that helps to relieve tummy spasms and wind," says Dr Lee.

Just don’t overindulge, as this may bring on the festive flatulence.

3. Your memory might improve

Resveratrol, a chemical found in red grapes and therefore red wine, has been linked to slowing down memory loss.

"Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that has been proven to boost memory and cognitive function, meaning that it could potentially help keep the brain healthy," says Dr Lee. "It has also been shown to protect against heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity."

4. Your skin may look younger

"As well as helping to protect you from age-related degenerative diseases, research has shown that resveratrol can also contribute to younger-looking skin," says Dr Lee.

"It triggers collagen production, which improves the skin’s elasticity, and its anti-inflammatory properties can relieve inflammation. All have a positive effect on maintaining a youthful appearance."

5. You can still get a hangover

Many people ask 'Can I get a hangover from mulled wine?' And the answer, says Dr Lee, is unfortunately yes. Mulled wine still has a high alcohol and sugar content, so you should be aware of how much you’re consuming.

"People often think that because it’s been heated it’s less alcoholic, but only a small amount actually evaporates, explains Dr Lee. "Red wine also contains congeners – compounds that can increase the severity of a hangover – so go easy."

How to make mulled wine

In a large saucepan, pour 1 bottle of red wine, add 1 quartered orange stuffed with cloves, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1tsp nutmeg, 2tbsp brown sugar and 1 shot of port (optional). Gently heat for 20 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse and the wine to warm through. Alternatively, why not try making mulled wine in a slow cooker?

This could contain 1-3 units of alcohol per drink, depending on your mug size and alcohol strength of your recipe.

As ever, you should drink mulled wine (and indeed any alcohol) responsibly, and limit yourself to no more than 14 units of alcohol per week. Contact your GP or an organisation like Drink Aware if you’re struggling.

Slow cookers can make so much more than stews and casseroles – did you know you can also make perfect mulled wine in a slow cooker?

Having previously made hot chocolate in a slow cooker, I started to wonder what other festive beverages I could conjure up in this convenient kitchen appliance. With Christmas approaching, mulled wine seemed the obvious choice. I can’t say I’m a massive fan of red wine, but give me mulled wine in the winter or sangria in the summer and I’m very happy.

Not only does it taste great, but making mulled wine in the slow cooker is also great for filling your home with the smell of warm red wine and festive spices. And, it's super simple. You only need a handful of ingredients and the slow cooker does pretty much everything for you. I’ve had my slow cooker for well over three years and I'd never brewed mulled wine in it before. I’ve certainly been missing a trick.

For those of you wondering how to make mulled wine, never fear, I’ve included step-by-step instructions and an ingredients list below to make it much easier for you to recreate at home. The recipe I’ve chosen serves 8-10 making it an ideal Christmas cocktail for sharing - which you can have simmering in the background whilst you prep Christmas foods or entertain.

Just don’t forget to take a moment when enjoying it. Close your eyes, absorb the flavours, the aroma, and the festive memories. Christmas can be a whirlwind at times - so, give yourself a minute to relax where you can.

How to make mulled wine in a slow cooker

As well as your ingredients, listed below, you will need a large spoon for stirring, a ladle for serving, and mugs or heat-resistant glass mugs. I opted for tall handled hot coffee glasses to serve my mulled wine in. I've also gone for a sweet mulled wine recipe, but you could opt for just red wine and leave out the orange juice and sugar if preferred.

Also, remember to buy a spare orange or apple for decorating - just in case you’re feeling a tad fancy when you’ve got guests over. A cinnamon stick or two, and some star anise seeds wouldn’t go a miss either if you’re all for presentation.

Ingredients

You will need:

• 75cl bottle of red wine
• 300 ml (1/2 pint) water
• 300 ml (1/2 pint) orange juice
• 3 tbsp caster sugar
• 3x mulled wine spice sachets (read packet instructions for how many per ml)
• 150 ml (1/4pt) brandy
• 1 orange, sliced
• 1 apple
• A slow cooker of course!
• Extras: Orange, cinnamon stick, star anise for decorating

Method

Step 1

Add all of the ingredients to your slow cooker, except for the brandy, and set your slow cooker to a low heat. Pop the lid on.

Step 2

Leave the mulled wine to warm through for 1 hour and 30 minutes. After this time, add the brandy and stir. Leave for another 30 minutes.

Step 3

After 2 hours your mulled wine is ready to be served. Spoon carefully into your chosen mugs or heatproof glasses and enjoy. Cheers!

Red wines such as Merlot, Zinfandel, and Grenache are recommended for making mulled wine. Fruitier wines work nicely with both the sweetness and spice of mulled wine. Go for medium to full-bodied red wines that are dark and fruity.

If you want to add a bit more of a kick to your Christmas cocktail, we’d recommend a tablespoon or two of brandy to make it extra warming. You could also try a splash of Cointreau, sloe gin, or Grand Marnier if you want to push the boat out.

For those of you looking for an easy option, you can buy ready-made mulled wine from a range of different supermarkets including Waitrose Mulled Wine or M&S Red Mulled Wine.

Does the alcohol cook off in mulled wine?

Yes, the alcohol in the red wine does burn off when cooking however the trick is to warm mulled wine low and slow without boiling or over simmering the liquid. Extras such as brandy or Cointreau tend to be stirred in or added before serving for an extra warming punch of flavour.

If you want your mulled wine to be extra strong, you're probably best not to use the slow cooker and opt for the classic way of cooking it on the hob in a pot or pan.

Can you reheat mulled wine in the microwave?

Yes, you can reheat mulled wine in the microwave - and it’s easy to do so too. You just need to make sure you have a microwavable mug or cup. You can reheat in batches or a single mug at a time, the choice is yours. Just make sure you keep the temperature low on your microwave and reheat in a burst of 1 minute at a time.

Horticultural experts reveal how you can make a protective layer of mulch and even improve soil drainage using simple wine stoppers. Here are the savvy ideas sustainable gardeners can embrace to reuse wine corks in their gardens.

How to use wine corks in your garden: 7 ways to improve soil and plants

Explaining how this budget garden idea can help enhance your outdoor space professional gardener Jane Dobbs says: "You can use wine corks for everything from mulch to plant markers.

"Gardening with wine corks is not only eco-friendly but also cost-effective. You'll get healthier plants, better soil quality, and a more aesthetically pleasing garden."

1. Improve pot drainage

When you're planting your best patio container plants or potting easy-care houseplants corks can be extremely beneficial in aiding drainage. 

Placing a few discarded wine corks in the bottom of planters and containers when repotting your plants helps break up the soil to ensure the roots don't become overwhelmed by water.

"You can use wine corks to improve drainage in potted plants," says Jane. "Putting cork pieces at the bottom of pots helps prevent waterlogging. Before adding soil, cut the wine corks into smaller chunks and put them in the bottom. Creating a drainage layer will let excess water out."

You don't even need to cut them if you choose not to. When planting new pots you can simply place a handful of wine corks into the bottom to reduce the amount of compost needed and create space.

2. Ease soil aeration

Aeration is beneficial for all aspects of gardening, from helping when making compost to aerating a lawn. "It is crucial for healthy plant growth that the soil is aerated as it facilitates the roots' ability to breathe and assists in the absorption of water and nutrients," Jane explains. 

"The air pockets created in the soil by wine corks can assist in this process. By chopping wine corks into small pieces and mixing them into soil, you can help to aerate the soil. It will improve soil aeration and drainage, especially in heavy or compacted soils.

3. Make long-lasting mulch

Mulch is a protective layer of material used to cover the topsoil in flowerbeds or composted containers, which helps to protect the area by suppressing weeds, retaining moisture and helping to keep the soil warm in colder climates. You can use wine corks as a slow, biodegradable mulch material. 

"You need to clean wine corks thoroughly before you use them as mulch," suggests Jane. "Next, chop them into small pieces using a knife or shears and evenly spread the cork pieces over the soil. As the corks break down, they help improve soil health, retain soil moisture, and reduce weed growth."

It's important, when using wine corks as mulch in the garden, to ensure they are natural cork and not synthetic. Using synthetic corks will leach chemicals into the ground, which you do not want.

To use corks as mulch, you can either leave them whole or cut them up into small pieces. Either way, you have an effective mulch for your plants.

4. Elevate pots and containers

Plant pot feet are a blessing to provide better drainage and prevent root rot. While you can buy a 20-pack of invisible plant pot feet from Amazon for £14.97, you can create your own plant pot feet using old wine corks.

Placing wine cork under pots and planters is a simple but very effective way to raise your them off the ground and improve drainage. There's no need to affix the corks to the pots; just place them flat side down underneath the plant pots, one for each corner, and you have instant, free pot feet.

To use old corks to elevate your plant pots in place of traditional plastic feet, you simply cut the corks in half, safely using a kitchen knife and chopping board. Each cork will create two feet and you use them flat side down and position your pot squarely on top of the homemade feet. 

Although the corks are rounded the weight of the pot and the balance of where you equally position the feet will provide a safe and stable base.

5. Create plant labels

Use your leftover wine corks to fashion homemade plant labels. These can prove invaluable if you are keen on vegetable gardening because when you've gone to all the trouble of growing your own veg the last thing you want to do is lose track of what you've sown where. 

To make these simple labels all you need is a sharp kitchen knife, a handful of wooden stakes (like these Chef Aid Bamboo Skewers for £2.99 for 100 at Amazon) and a marker pen. 

Take a used cork and carefully cut down one side to make a flat surface, you can do this carefully using your kitchen knife supported by a wooden chopping board. Use a marker pen to then write the vegetable/plant names on the flat side of the cork. Pierce the bottom of the cork label with a wooden skewer and voilà – affordable wine cork labels in seconds.

"Paint the corks a different colour or add artistic designs for a more decorative touch," Jane suggests. "Plant labels can also be made using different types of markers or stickers."

6. Implement a savvy safety measure

Who knew that old wine corks could be a garden safety measure? Jeremy Shacklock, a gardening enthusiast, and father to w&h's royal editor Emma Shacklock, shares his genius idea to reuse wine corks for added safety when tending to his garden crops. 

Explaining exactly how Jeremy says: “I use old wine corks in my garden as a safety precaution when I’m creating support structures out of bamboo canes for my bean plants and sweet peas." A great gardening tip for those training the best climbing plants on canes.

Jeremy explains: "I carefully make a small hole in the top of each cork and then slot them on top of the bamboo canes and they offer a bit of protection and ensure no sharp edges are in the way when I’m gardening.”

7. Deter pests

You can choose to use wine corks as a pest deterrent. Whether deterring your neighbour's cat from using your pots as a lavatory or implementing a natural slug deterrent corks can be used on top of your soil to stop pests from getting to your plants.

In my parent's garden, the wine corks are used in their entirety to prevent cats mostly, but if you wish to deter smaller pests you can cut the corks into pieces to create an even terrain that is more challenging for them to navigate.

"Corks are great for deterring certain pests from getting to your plants," says Jane. "Some garden invaders won't like their texture and smell. To keep slugs and snails away, scatter cork pieces around the base of plants. Your plants are safer because they're less likely to cross this barrier."

You can also attract birds to your garden using wine corks. "Bird shelters made of wine corks are perfect because of their natural texture and insulation properties," explains Jane.

It’s amazing what you can do with some wine corks and a glue gun. You can build a pretty birdhouse for your garden and give your feathered friends a chic home. Simply glue the corks together to make the floor, walls and roof, remembering to leave an opening in the front as an entrance.

This is by no means a way to encourage you to drink more wine (but no judgment here, especially if you're part of our womanandhome.com wine club), it's merely a way of making household waste go to good use. Often, the smallest of acts, from harvesting rainwater or planting the best plants for pollinators, can go a long way to be more eco-friendly in our own backyards.

If you want an Italian different to the classic Chianti, Piedmont is known for its Barolo and Barbaresco wines, which are all based around the Nebbiolo grape. With medium-high body blends, wines from this area are high on acidity and tannins with a touch of fruity flavours.

While this might seem like an unlikely wine region, if you're a fan of light, citrussy whites, you will probably have tried the slightly peppery Grüner Veltliner, which hails from this region. Spend your time here sipping the famous white or a sweet Riesling - or if you're a red fan, you can find decent Pinot Noir wines in the region too.

The neckline framed her décolletage in such an elegant way and the scalloped detailing transformed the classic Bardot neckline into something a little more contemporary.

If you’re wondering how to wear red and find yourself a little daunted by vivid shades, then a more muted burgundy red like Duchess Sophie’s red wine coloured dress is a great alternative. She also chose a very simple yet effective dress design which had the colour as the main focus and which was otherwise plain and this also helped make it more wearable.

The long sleeves, bodycon fit and knee-length hem gave this dress a sophisticated edge and more versatility. Unlike the admittedly gorgeous gowns and very formal ensembles the Duchess of Edinburgh often wears, this wouldn’t look at all out of place for a lovely dinner out with friends or for a special low-key party. To make it more casual, simply style with a pair of ballet pumps and throw over a leather jacket.

However, Duchess Sophie went all-out with the glamour at the Doctor Who reception with some neutral accessories. This is another easy way to balance out a more statement colour and makes the most of your wardrobe staples. Her shoes were court shoe heels in a soft nude-beige suede and she finished off her look with dainty diamond drop earrings and a necklace.

Going for a side-swept hair look Duchess Sophie had her blonde tresses tied back away from her face in a low bun which also accentuated the top of her fabulous dress. The royals tend to favour more modest necklines but this was a risk that definitely paid off for the Duchess of Edinburgh.  

Although she didn’t dip her toe into wearing red lipstick to match her dress on this occasion, Duchess Sophie’s lip colour did have a berry undertone to it that brought out the warmth of her choice of red. 

During the reception she chatted to cast members including Jenna Coleman, Catherine Tate and The Crown star Matt Smith, as well as getting to meet a Dalek that had been brought into the palace. She looked delighted throughout the evening and Duchess Sophie’s sultry red wine coloured dress couldn’t have been a more perfect choice for this special occasion.

Is there anything that says summer more than copious amounts of berries and rosé wine? We don’t think so… That’s why we’ve created this Cherry and rosé jelly and it’s a real winner!

Not only is our cherry and rosé jelly a great summer dessert to make in advance, but it also doubles up as an excellent adult-only alternative to a birthday cake. Whatever the occasion, we’re certain this jelly will wow your guests. There’s something truly mesmerising about all those berries and flowers suspended in inside the jelly. We know how impressive this looks, but in reality, it’s a very simple dish to execute. We recommend you buy (or pick) the freshest fruits, and use a good quality wine to maximise the flavour. If fizz is usually your go-to summer tipple, consider making our raspberry and pink Champagne jelly or for a non-alcoholic option, our elderflower jellies with raspberries is a lovely and light.

Ingredients

• 4x 11 g sachets gelatine powder
• 300ml rosé wine
• 300ml cherry juice
• 300ml water
• 100g caster sugar
• 1tbsp fresh lime juice
• 500g mixed berries, we used strawberries, raspberries and blueberries
• Edible flowers

You will need

• 18cm bundt tin

Method

1. Put the gelatine in a small bowl and pour over 50ml of rose wine and leave for 5 mins. Heat the remaining wine, cherry juice, water and sugar in a saucepan, bring to a boil and then remove from the heat, add in the lime juice and gelatine and stir to dissolve fully.
2. Add a layer of berries and a few edible flowers to the base of the bundt tin and pour over some of the jelly, carry on adding berries, flowers and jelly until the tin is full. Place in the fridge to set overnight.
3. To unmould, place the bundt tin briefly into some hot water to release from the sides, cover the base with a plate or cake stand and turn over to release.

Perfect for picnics, barbecues or just a lazy afternoon in the garden, frosé is guraranteed to be your new drink of choice.

Taking cue from the classic frozen margirita, the frosé takes one our favourite summer time tipples and gives it a frozen spin.

It couldn't be simplier to make frosé at home. All you need is a bottle of your favourite rosé, some fresh strawberries and a little grenadine - and a trusty blender to whizz it all together.

You can serve up your frosé thick with a spoon for a dessert option or whizz it a little thinner so it can be drank.

This recipe uses strawberries to give your frosé as summery flavour but you can replace with your choice of fruits - the fun is in the experimenting!

Ingredients

• 75cl bottle rosé
• 400g strawberries
• 2tbsp grenadine syrup

Method

1. Pour the rosé into ice cube trays and freeze until solid.
2. Whizz up strawberries and 2tbsp grenadine syrup in a blender.
3. Put into a freezer-proof box and freeze.
4. When you’re ready to serve, take everything out and leave at room temp for 15 mins then whizz.
5. Spoon into serving glasses and top with a strawberry.
