You've probably heard that skinny jeans have been making a comeback. For the last few years, I have been encouraged to try all kinds of alternative shapes from barrel to cut-offs, but I've stayed devoted to the style. My loyalty has been unwavering.

My commitment to the skinny fit has extended to wearing leggings while walking and camping (alongside my best walking shoes). So, imagine my delight when I spotted that Acai Outdoor, a brand designed specifically for women, includes a range of 'outdoor skinnies' that resemble skinny jeans.

They cinch you in but are shower-resistant (ideal for spring showers), snag-proof (so you are ready to scramble in all seasons), stretchy, and breathable.

As my family and friends can testify, I have more or less lived in these hiking trousers for women, for all sorts of activities and occasions. At £89 RRP but closer to £80 in the sales, they are not the cheapest. You'll find workout leggings for less, but the cost per wear makes them a steal, or that is what I told myself, at least.

Design

By my own admission, I am a bit unadventurous when it comes to colour. My wardrobe is predominantly black. Thankfully, the MAX trousers are available in said colour, and this was the one I opted for.

The darker-toned forest green and a deep chestnutty brown are my other favourites, but for those who prefer bright tones or are looking for a lighter colourway for summer, there are grey, blue, and green options. However, the stock of these is currently more limited.

ACAI’s inclusive sizing is a standout feature. It ranges from a UK 6 to 22 and offers different leg lengths, including petite (P), regular (R), tall (L) and extra tall (XL). I chose a 14(R) and found there was plenty of give. Cinching is one thing, but no one wants trousers that prevent them from breathing properly.

As you would expect from their name, these hiking trousers for women feel super stretchy, so I found them very easy to get on and very comfortable to walk in and sit in, whether you are perched somewhere mid-hike or relaxing in a beer garden.

The four-way stretch works with you, so you can move about without feeling constrained. I have been scrambling up and down rocks and tackling uphill and downhill terrain in them, and would say they provide the comfort and snugness of leggings.

They are also lightweight, not only to wear, but to pack in a rucksack for an early morning walk. This also comes in handy if you are heading away for the weekend or on a longer hike and want to take spare clothing. Made from shower-resistant softshell fabric, which is 89% nylon and 11% elastane, they are machine washable (at 30 degrees) and ideal for the UK’s temperamental weather. Plus, they are snag-proof, so durable enough to withstand skirting over rocks, stiles and uneven ground. Many a time, I have found myself shuffling down a steep hillside on my backside, and these have held strong, so they get a thumbs up from me.

The extra detailing is noteworthy too, such as the rose gold buttons, belt hooks, zip and button fastening, and the handy pockets deep on the front. One of the two pockets on the back is also zipped for extra security. But it's the overall look and feel that impresses me, and why I find them so versatile, taking me from the trail to town.

What are the Max Stretch Skinny Trousers like to wear?

A decade ago, it would have been impossible to find trousers like these MAX skinnies for outdoor adventures. You would typically opt for gym leggings with pockets and hope for the best. Or, if the weather was looking particularly fierce, reach for some universally unflattering waterproof trousers (you know the ones - they resemble rustling bin liners). I’ve worn them in the past and didn’t feel particularly great, but reminded myself, “it’s not a fashion show,” and got on with it. Those days are long gone with this new era of hiking trousers for women.

These hardworking skinny trousers are super light and stretchy, so I feel cinched in and supported with the high waist and snug fit, yet I can still move easily, and there is no superfluous material flapping about in the elements. I have got caught in spring showers, and the water droplets have just bounced off, which means my legs have stayed dry. I have not been unfortunate enough to be walking in a heavy downpour yet, but I can imagine they would dry quickly.

Importantly, I feel confident in them. Not only because they tick all the practical boxes, but I feel like myself. And feeling confident in what you are wearing, whether it is trainers, leggings or a new fleece, undeniably gives you a boost.

What seasons can you wear the ACAI Skinny Jeans in?

These trousers are an all-rounder. They provide enough coverage to keep you warm in cooler months, especially when paired with a warm fleece or body warmer, while the water-resistant fabric keeps you dry during spring and summer rainfall.

Equally, the lightweight, moisture-wicking material is handy as temperatures begin to rise, especially when paired with a T-shirt or vest top. On particularly cold days, you could opt for the Thermal Skinny Outdoor Trousers. They look similar on the outside but have a thermal fleece lining. Likewise, on hotter days, walking or running shorts, of course, might feel preferable.

But the MAX’s adaptability is one of its key features. Looking at the reviews, women have worn them to Everest Base Camp and to winter coaching sessions, as well as on regular hikes and simply out and about.

To date, I have paired them with hiking boots, trainers, sandals and flipflops. I have worn them on breezy beach walks in Cornwall, next to a campfire in Scotland, while getting groceries and enjoying pub lunches, on flat dog walks around the park and on many walks across the Pennine moorlands. Safe to say, you get your money’s worth.

This light and airy take on denim can be styled exactly the same way as your heavier jeans, but will be a little more wearable for the hot and humid months of high summer. Buddy yours up with pastel tones like Jennifer or add some oomph with a bolder print or block colour.

If you are unsure about what shoes to wear with wide leg trousers, the key is to stick to heels if they are a longer length, as the extra height will avoid you looking swamped in fabric and help you look taller. There’s something about a pair of smart, tailored trousers that instantly fills me with confidence and they work for so many smart-casual outfits.

Wide-leg designs are my favourites, but palazzo trousers are emerging as a huge trend for 2025. The Duchess of Sussex is on board with it too and stepped out in New York on 23rd April wearing a Ralph Lauren linen-silk blend suit.

We all know she loves a blazer so it wasn’t a surprise to see her go for one here, but the palazzo trousers were the real statement piece in this ensemble.

Duchess Meghan has been a fan of streamlined skinny jeans since her pre-royal days and although she does wear wide-leg as well as straight-leg trousers, palazzo silhouettes are one step further on the wide-leg scale.

They have so much gorgeous volume and the royal’s Ralph Lauren Greer trousers featured inverted pleats and darts that accentuated the shape. Designed to fall to the floor, they were high-waisted and the linen-silk material made them feel cool and relaxed rather than business-like.

This is worth considering when you’re eyeing up a pair of trousers. If you plan on wearing them with your best white trainers and denim jackets to make them more casual then look for a softer, slightly less structured fabric and looser silhouettes like palazzo or wide-leg.

Meghan’s exact trousers are an investment and virtually sold out, but there are so many beautiful, neutral palazzo options around right now that we’ll all rather spoilt for choice on how to recreate her New York look.

The Duchess of Sussex was in the Big Apple to attend the 2025 TIME 100 Summit at Lincoln Center and chose to style her chic co-ord with a classic white shirt. This was elegant, though really any stylish tops you’d wear with jeans would also pair wonderfully with beige, white or black Palazzo trousers.

Meghan’s look was completed with glimmering gold jewellery and tan accessories. She wore her Ralph Lauren buckle belt with her trousers and a pair of suede Manolo Blahnik court shoes.

The heels were barely visible under the hems of her trouser legs, except when she was giving a speech on stage, but maximised their frame-elongating effect nevertheless. In warmer weather I’d probably reach for espadrille wedges or heeled sandals instead.

Seeing the Duchess wearing her palazzo trousers in New York has opened my eyes to how to style this trendy silhouette. I would love to see her wear more ultra wide-leg designs - possibly even jeans - throughout the rest of 2025.

The darts and crisp pressed creases give them a smart edge, but the relaxed wide-leg silhouette balances this. That’s exactly what we want from tailored trousers as it means you can easily dress them down with trainers and T-shirts for a more low-key look.

Clodagh McKenna went for a smart-casual outfit on This Morning and tucked a blouson sleeved white top from Iris Fashion into the mid-rise waistband. If you’re ever in doubt on how to style colourful trousers we’d recommend taking this approach.

Clodagh added a final touch of glamour to her Good Friday ensemble with layered gold necklaces, including what looks to be a chain necklace. It’s amazing how much of a difference jewellery can make to your style and chain necklaces are particularly timeless.

They aren’t too overwhelming when paired with a casual outfit and look great with occasionwear too. We’ve seen Clodagh McKenna wearing gold-toned chain necklaces a lot in pictures and videos shared on Instagram, so they’re clearly a staple in her collection.

The soft creamy yellow tone of these is not only right on trend for 2025 but screams spring/summer to us as something a little different from the other pastels like pink, mint and blue that we see a lot this time of year. If you’re never sure exactly how to mix different colours within an outfit then following Jessica Ennis-Hill’s approach is a good way to go. Keep to one key colour with your clothes alongside neutral staples and then go for a brighter or contrasting tone on your nails as it’s noticeable but more subtle.

Forest green is such a beautiful colour for winter and wasn’t too vibrant against the neutral tones of the royal’s jumper and trousers. She finished off her look with black leather gloves, a black fedora hat and the Aspinal of London Mayfair Midi Bag in champagne, green and black woven leather. The gloves mirrored the leather finish of her coated trousers and tied the whole outfit together wonderfully.

It was such a chic look for a day at Cheltenham and struck a great balance between being elevated and still wearable. Zara Tindall’s coated trousers are the star of this style show for us and it seems like they’re a long-time staple in the royal’s wardrobe. She previously stepped out at Ascot wearing a very similar, possibly the same, pair in December in 2016.

For Carole, though, it was all-green all the way and she paired her jumper with what appeared to be deep green checked trousers.

Sadly, you can’t see a lot of them in the Party Pieces Instagram post, but the shape suggests they’re trousers rather than a skirt. Either way, the checked pattern was beautiful and featured lighter green and beige stripes. These lighter colours brought a touch of contrast to Carole’s December outfit whilst the background colour complemented her jumper.

They are a soft heather grey which is such a beautiful neutral tone for winter and makes a change from wearing black, navy and brown which are such popular colours for this time of year. The shoes were by Gianvito Rossi and gave her extra height without compromising too much on comfort thanks to their sturdy block heels. It’s perhaps no surprise that the Princess of Wales wore a blazer to this engagement, though we haven’t seen her wear patterned ones like this quite as much in recent years.

The blend of white and black in the Smythe checked blazer looked wonderful with the rest of her outfit and keeping to a generally monochrome colour palette balanced Kate’s burgundy trousers and allowed them to shine at the same time.

The Zara sale never fails to have us snapping up an irresistible fashion bargain - and the Animal Print Trousers, that have been slashed from £25, reminded us of the Max Mara pair as soon as we saw them during our latest scroll through the latest discounts. 

With a similar elasticated waistband with adjustable drawstrings, the loose-fitting pair provide an undeniably similar look to the Max Mara option - for hundreds less.

Helen Skelton nailed transitional dressing as she paired a bold red baseball jacket with a pair of khaki trousers and some strappy sandals - the laid-back look is perfect for sunny autumn days.

The t-shirt-like material of the shirt brought a laid-back element to the look, being both more casual and warmer than a more formal style, and it was a great styling choice to pair the chic leather trousers with this softer fabric for a softer overall look.

For her zoo outing the senior royal wore her trousers with a jumper that was a very deep maroon hue and she wore it draped over her waistband. This balanced out the formal design of her trousers and was echoed by the flowing longline Suzannah London coat she layered over the top.

The pale grey-taupe lifted the colour palette of her outfit, but also made the burgundy and green pop even more by contrast. It had a collar, covered buttons and fell to a maxi length on her which is very flattering if you want a silhouette-elongating effect. Duchess Sophie matched her heeled ankle boots to her coat which brought a sense of cohesion to her autumn style.

This is a handy tip worth following if you want to ensure your outfits look incredibly polished. Keeping to just a few main colours within one look is also great for blending neutrals and jewel tones like Her Royal Highness did.

To make her outfit even warmer the Duchess added a navy, crane-patterned scarf which was a lovely touch as she also visited the restored Snowdon Aviary, which was first designed by the late Earl of Snowdon - Princess Margaret’s former husband.

For a day at the zoo this was so cosy and chic and we can’t wait to see the senior royal mixing brighter colours into her looks this autumn too - possibly even emerald green again.

Carole Middleton’s cropped checked jacket and black trousers from 2022 were a striking pairing that has reignited our love for monochrome styling.

After a summer of wearing vibrant colours and fun florals, we’re ready to embrace a shift in tones and patterns with our autumn capsule wardrobe. Monochrome outfits are gorgeous all year round, though in autumn/winter many of us will naturally be drawn to wearing black and white even more, alongside other neutrals and jewel tones. When it comes to monochrome inspiration we can’t help but turn to Carole Middleton, who wowed in a full black and white outfit back in October 2022 that we've been casting our minds back to. She visited a few Saker Shoprite Stores in the US to mark the launch of her former business, Party Pieces, across the pond.

In a picture shared at the time on the Party Pieces Instagram, Carole viewed product ranges on the selves and stepped out in a black and white checked cropped jacket, black trousers and heels.

Recreate Carole Middleton's Monochrome Look

The jacket was collarless and cropped, with long sleeves and a fitted silhouette and this is the kind of timeless jacket we’ve seen Carole wear multiple times over the years. She wore a navy one with a very similar shape after Prince William and Kate announced their engagement in 2010 and collarless boucle jackets in particular are very popular right now. They look amazing at special events worn over your best jumpsuits or dresses, but also day-to-day as Carole showed in 2022. 

The shape gives these jackets a more sophisticated, polished edge to them that instantly dresses up an outfit. Like her daughter the Princess of Wales, Carole Middleton tends to err on the more smart-casual side with her clothing and if this works for you too then you might want to consider adding a cropped jacket to your wardrobe. Even if you prefer a more blazer style jacket, a cropped design is fabulously flattering worn with high-rise trousers if you want to accentuate your waist.

Carole’s black and white check jacket had real impact to it without being a bold colour and it worked so well with her simple black trousers. Like her outerwear, her trousers were cropped and they had a straight leg fit. The tailored design was so chic and with the checked jacket they had a professional feel that was perfect for Carole’s big US trip. 

To make an outfit like this a little more casual day-to-day, simply add a pair of your best white trainers or flat black ankle boots. On this occasion, though, the Princess of Wales’s mother went for a pair of her trusty court shoe heels. Keeping to the monochrome styling theme, these were black and had a pointed toe and stiletto heel. They looked stunning with the rest of her outfit and the pared-back design meant that Carole’s cropped checked jacket remained the star of the show. 

As autumnal monochrome looks go, it doesn’t come much more elegant than this and it can take you from a day at work to an evening out so seamlessly. The look was a masterclass in how to style a white shirt. Spotted leaving an intimate dinner with friends at Madrid's La Lonja del Mar restaurant, Letizia looked stunning in an all-white monochrome outfit. She paired some relaxed-fit, straight-leg linen trousers, a style that's one of 2024's biggest fashion trends, with a simple white shirt to create a slouched silhouette that looked as comfortable as it did stylish.

The royal was sporting a sleek pair of nude sandals, the Tanit Butter sandals from Spanish brand Trenza, and tied in the neutral shade with the strap of her intricately crocheted handbag. The bag, the now sold-out Ainara bag from Spanish-based crocheter Josune, was the perfect choice for the laid-back outfit, with it's bright pops of colour adding some fun against the subtle tones.

The casual outfit comes as Queen Letizia and her husband King Felipe VI come to the end of their annual summer holiday. The pair have, as has become tradition for them, stepped away from royal duties for a family break while their children are away from school, though their break was interrupted by the Paris Olympics this year which they attended in Paris as part of their official duties.

Stepping out at a reception for the Olympic athletes in Paris last month, Letizia looked gorgeous in a dreamy head-to-toe Dior outfit and a pair of low-block heels. The shoes were a stunning though practical choice for the royal as she continues to suffer with chronic foot pain, something that's keeping the many stillettos that make up her collection from making an appearance.

But any worries we had over crafting the perfect Autumn capsule wardrobe have been magically cured by M&S's latest release.

The high street store's Crepe Tab Detail Wide Leg Trousers are the perfect autumn wardrobe staple, with their stunning wide leg silhouette being casual yet elevated thanks to the classic tailoring techniques like the smart front darts and pressed creases.

Available in a great selection of autumnal colours including black, a dark chocolate brown, a light beige 'mocha' shade, and a navy among others, the colour-ways make for the perfect simple yet elevated casualwear as well as the perfect timeless piece for more formal events.

Shoppers are already raving about the trousers that they say are the perfect style for 'every occasion.' One reviewer wrote of them, "These trousers are fantastic! Meghan Markle wore a bronze shirt and trousers in Colombia and we’ve been convinced to add metallic shades into our style rotation.

If you love wearing black, white and beige tones but sometimes want something a little bolder, then metallics are an underrated choice to add a special touch to an outfit. Whilst silver is perhaps the most statement metallic hue, bronze and gold have such a warm undertone to them and work with both neutrals and vibrant colours. Many of us will have metallic accessories in our summer capsule wardrobe, but Meghan Markle has just made a case for us expanding our metallic collection. Stepping out with Prince Harry for the first day of their visit to Colombia, Meghan wowed in a bronze-brown outfit that would rival the best wedding guest dresses.

She wore a Victoria Beckham silk shirt in a rust-brown shade that had a bronze undertone to it in the light as she attended the 'Responsible Digital Future' forum at EAN University in Bogota. The Duchess of Sussex paired this beautiful staple with wide-leg satin trousers from La Ligne.

Recreate Meghan Markle's Bronze Outfit

The sheen of these trousers really enhances the bronze colour, but isn’t at all sparkly like some metallic pieces can often be. This is a lovely way to wear metallics when you don’t want them to be overpowering or too much for daytime wear. Equally, Meghan’s trousers could be elevated even more for a special evening out with a silky cami top.

Her shirt was the perfect style choice for this forum in Colombia as the similar shades gave Meghan’s outfit a very cohesive, put-together feel. The classic silhouette, with the smart collar and long sleeves ending in elongated cuffs also made it that bit more formal and she balanced this by undoing a few buttons.

This ensured her outfit was the perfect smart-casual option for an official appearance and just like the trousers, her shirt could easily be mixed and matched with other pieces in her wardrobe.

This is partially down to the timeless design, but the colour is also so wearable and would really pop against blue denim jeans or white linen trousers. For a more low-key day out near her and Prince Harry’s California home the Duchess might have chosen her best white trainers from Veja, but in Bogata she wore Aquazzura suede sandals. 

They had a practical block heel which is perfect if you want a bit more height, but don’t want to brave the discomfort of stilettos. The ‘cognac brown’ colour was slightly paler than Meghan’s bronze shirt and trousers and this subtle contrast was so effective.

Perhaps wanting to keep her glossy brunette hair out of her face during this important event, the Duchess of Sussex went for a voluminous ponytail. This isn’t a style we see massively often from her as she tends to prefer keeping her hair loose, in waves.

In Colombia she also had her signature waves, but pulled her hair into a high ponytail and wrapped a piece of hair around the band securing it, to give it a seamless look. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in Colombia for four days, meaning there are still plenty of outfits to see from Meghan before they return to the US too. 

They are being hosted - and were invited to visit - by Colombia’s Vice-President Francia Márquez. As reported by the BBC they spent Day 1 of their visit talking with teenagers about the impact social media has and taking part in the Responsible Digital Future summit, where they discussed AI and the spread of misinformation online.
