Charlotte Hawkins has delivered some fabulous style moments at Royal Ascot this week, with a series of elegant looks that are worth taking inspiration from, but her day four attire might just be one of my personal favourites yet.

The presenter stepped out in an exquisite summer dress by Rebecca Vallance - a brand that's also a favourite of Zara Tindall's, and known for their timeless and feminine designs. It’s the chicest choice if you're stuck on what to wear to the races, or if you're simply looking for a luxury summer wedding guest dress.

Her light blue cotton midi dress feels so sophisticated, with its lantern print and flattering shape making it ideal for a summer race day.
The newest member of the Royal Family, Mrs Harriet Phillips, made her first post-wedding appearance on 16th June at Royal Ascot. Dressed in a gorgeous dusty blue frock and matching hat, she even got to make a very regal entrance alongside her mother-in-law Princess Anne and husband Peter.

Harriet was all smiles as she rode in the royal procession on Day 1, sitting in pride of place beside Princess Anne in the carriage. She had the traditional name badge pinned to her dress, reading, "Mrs Peter Phillips", and whilst this was to be expected, her subtle tribute to her husband was more of a surprise.

She made the sweet gesture of having her new initials monogrammed on to her matching blue Anya Hindmarch clutch bag.

This touching detail suggests that Harriet has jumped right into her new life as the wife of Peter, considering their wedding took place less than two weeks before Royal Ascot. Harriet and Peter married on 6th June, in a small, private ceremony followed by a reception at Princess Anne’s Gatcombe Park estate.

Harriet’s closeness with her new mother-in-law was also on show at Ascot, with the pair caught laughing and chatting away as they rode in the second carriage of the procession. She was also spotted bonding with her new sister-in-law, Zara Tindall, before she headed to the Royal Box to watch the proceedings.

Even Harriet’s style choices nod to the fact that she’s fitting in well with her new family. Her high-necked blue dress is made by Suzannah London, designed in the Biarritz style and, per the brand’s website, is inspired by the late 1940s vintage tea dress style.

(Image credit: Mark Cuthbert/UK Press via Getty Images)

The designer is a go-to for the likes of Duchess Sophie and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Harriet’s matching hat was made by another royal favourite, milliner Jane Taylor London, who also made Kate's sunshine yellow hat from Ascot Day 2.

Staying in that honeymoon bubble, Harriet’s choice of jewellery was a link back to her wedding day too. She wore a set of Pragnell jewels and was loaned the Pragnell Tiara to wear for her nuptials. The Edwardian pearl and diamond design has a deep connection to the family she married into, having been present at the coronations of both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.

Harriet's wedding tiara also paid subtle tribute to the royals in another way as it's very similar to Princess Anne's Meander Tiara.

(Image credit: Photo by Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images)

The laurel leaves and articulated floral motifs, per the jeweller's website, bear "great resemblance to the tiara owned by The Princess Royal, in the official photograph celebrating her fiftieth birthday in 2000". As well as being worn by Princess Anne often over the years, the Meander Tiara was worn by Zara for her 2011 wedding to Mike Tindall.

Whether you're going for the first time or you're a seasoned attendee, deciding what to wear to Royal Ascot is a very important part of the day. Governed by a series of rules, depending on your enclosure, you'll have a different set of style codes to consider. Knowing what to wear to the races is one thing, but deciding what to wear to Royal Ascot is a bit trickier.

From the diameter of your hat base to the width of your dress straps, the dress codes are specific. One of the most celebrated events of British summer, from the horse racing itself to the parade ring, and singing around the bandstand at the end of the day, you're going to love it. This year, the event runs from Tuesday, 16th to Saturday, 20th June, and you can expect to see plenty of celebrities and members of the Royal Family dressed in their finery. Ladies Day, which is on Thursday, is always a real highlight for style, too.

The good news is that dressing for Ascot doesn't have to mean spending a fortune, and if you've already got any of the best summer wedding guest dresses for 2026 or sharp trouser suits in your arsenal, there is a good chance you can rewear something you have. To nail the Royal Ascot brief, we've put together a guide that takes you through everything you need to know.

What to wear to Royal Ascot: outfit ideas

woman&home's Fashion Editor Rivkie Baum offers this advice: "I tend to rely on a fit and flared midi dress for an easy one-and-done outfit. Even if I choose a sleeveless style, in a bold colour to match the dressy nature of the day, I always make sure I have a cardigan to hand as a light layer to slip on for an evening breeze. When it comes to footwear, comfort is key, and you can't go wrong with a pair of trending, neutral ballet pumps, as there is a lot of walking and standing around."

What to wear to Royal Ascot: The Royal Enclosure

If you're lucky enough to have a ticket for the Royal Enclosure, this is the strictest dress code of all, so think elegant and respectful. The best way to approach it is the same way you might approach a church wedding. Midi dresses are a popular choice, since dresses and skirts have to be just above the knee or longer. Bold colours and prints aren't off-limits, and in fact, you can really have some fun with them.

In 2017, the best jumpsuits were formally added to the dress code, but any suits must be in a matching material and colour. Note that 'hats (not fascinators) must be worn'. You can wear a hatinator, which has the appearance of a hat but is fastened onto a headband, but it should have a base of 4 inches or more. A fascinator, on the other hand, covers very little of the head and does not have a base.

Rivkie says: "Ascot's Royal Enclosure has some of the strictest fashion guidelines, but rather than being daunted by the rules, embrace the help they give in guiding your outfit for the occasion."

The official dress code:

A dress or skirt falling just above the knee or longer (lace and chiffon fabrics are permitted)

Shoulder straps that are a minimum width of 1 inch / 2.5cm

A jacket or pashmina may be worn. Sarah, who is also the mother of the Queen's great-grandnephew, was present again at the races on Wednesday, where she was spotted chatting with Zara Tindall.

In classic Lady Sarah Chatto fashion, the 58-year-old went for a simple, feminine outfit at the outdoor shindig on Thursday. She wore a white button-up cardigan over a white shirt with a matching pleated skirt, as well as a wide-brimmed, white sunhat to shade her from the blistering sun. She completed the elegant look with timeless jewelry, including a necklace and bracelet of pearls, a silver triangular brooch, and a pair of diamond-encrusted earrings. The angelic ensemble wasn't too different to Camilla Parker Bowles' 'beautifully elegant' white dress at the Royal Ascot, which has quickly gone viral for its heatwave-busting properties.

The chic royal added the final touches with cream-colored kitten heels and a white, leather clutch. Her brown hair was straightened and styled with flipped ends while her face appeared to be make-up free.

Fans were delighted to see the lesser-known royal at the event, with many taking to Twitter to shower her style choices with praise.

"I love seeing Sarah.
Deciding what to wear to the races is no easy task. There are dress codes to take into account, depending on which racecourse and enclosure you're visiting, and then there's the extra component of adding a hat or fascinator into the mix.

Whether you're heading to the Grand National or Royal Ascot, you want to look your very best, and the good news is there's so much choice on the high street this season. From elegant monochrome dresses to polka dot jumpsuits, my best advice is to start with the main part of your outfit first and build everything out from there.

In 2026, the dress codes are noticeably more relaxed than in previous years; however, there are still rules in place, meaning the earlier you start to look for your outfit, the better. For example, for Royal Ascot, dresses and tops must have straps of at least one inch, so before you shop, you'll want to be armed with information on what you can and can't wear in different enclosures. If you're shopping for a new outfit, remember that raceday outfits are often interchangeable with the best wedding guest dresses. And don't forget to have fun!

What to wear to the races

When planning what to wear to the races, a good starting point is to check the dress code for your specific event.

In practical terms, the Royal Enclosure at Ascot is generally considered to have the strictest guidelines. Hemlines are expected to fall to at least just above the knee or longer, while any strappy dress should have a shoulder strap that is a minimum of one inch. A jacket or pashmina may be worn, but the dress or top underneath is still expected to comply with the strap guidance. Trouser suits are allowed, but the jacket and trousers must be made of matching fabric and colour/print. Jumpsuits are also permitted but must fall below the knee (no playsuits). Finally, hats, a huge part of Ascot style, are also required, although a headpiece with a minimum base diameter of at least 10cm would also be permissible.

While dress codes differ between events, a safe bet is to think about your outfit in the same realm as what to wear to a wedding. A pretty midi-length dress, with shoulder coverage and a hat or fascinator, will ensure you tick all the potential requirements.

Best dresses to wear to the races

When it comes to selecting the perfect dress to wear to the races, this is a time to embrace colour and print, polka dots and florals are always winning prints in the summer.

For an elegant and timeless look, fit and flare midi dresses make for an easy and stylish choice, highlighting your middle and skimming over your hips with ease, creating an hourglass silhouette. To avoid any possible dress code infractions, avoid strapless and halter-neck styles.

If you select a printed dress, pick out one or two of the colours from the pattern for your accessories to complement your outfit.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:133.31%';>

Rixo

Corrine Chiffon Dress in Tulip Fields Cornflower Blue

Florals never go out of style, and this cornflower blue number is one of the best midi dresses for the races. Like dresses, avoid strapless or spaghetti straps and opt for a design with sleeves or straps wider than one inch. If in doubt, add a jacket in a matching or complementary colour for a modern take on raceday dressing.

woman&home's Fashion Channel Editor Rivkie Baum agrees that jumpsuits are a great alternative:

"The rule allowing jumpsuits in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot came into play in 2017, and was a strong sartorial move. Jumpsuits are universally flattering and, as with dresses, offer easy styling solutions for important occasions. While some events may have more relaxed attitudes towards hats and fascinators or not require them at all, other prestigious events, such as Royal Ascot, won’t allow entry without one. If you’re wearing a patterned outfit, try picking out one colour from the print for your headwear. If you're still in need of extra guidance, you can also consult our guide below.

Eliane of Eliane Sarah Millinery talks us through how to select a hat that suits your face shape:

“Not all hats fit all faces. Don’t be put off if the season’s hottest trends or the Princess of Wales' new headpiece style doesn’t suit you. Different designs suit different face shapes. Face shapes fall in a few categories: round, long, square, heart, triangle, oval."

Round: to slim your face, you need to create length, so look at asymmetrical styles, or a tall hat (with a small brim). Avoid round shapes and large brims or anything that will horizontally go along the forehead, as these will make your face appear rounder.

Long: if you want to make your face look rounder, then you need to do the opposite to round faces. Opt for a hat with a brim - the larger the better - a low crown is great to cut the length of the face.

Square: a bit like round, you can add asymmetry to your face or soften the features with curves. Height on the crown will also help lengthen the face. Round fascinator shapes, brims, crowns, and flowers will soften the look.

Oval: you can try anything. Go for any trend or style you want; all shapes should complement your face shape.

Heart: similar to oval shapes, you have a great choice. The one thing to consider is slimming the forehead, or just not accentuating the forehead as a feature, so as to avoid a narrow crown on the hat. A medium brim is a great choice. Asymmetrical headpieces and berets are also a great choice.

Triangle: as with the heart and oval shape, you have endless choices of styles to pick from.

<p class='vanilla-image-block' data-bordeaux-image-check style='padding-top:100.00%';>

Hobbs

Ottilie Fascinator

Hobbs has got a great selection of headpieces, and this fascinator gets our vote. From the width of the straps of your dress to the circumference of your hat, in order to have a fun and smooth day, you'll want to adhere to the rules. Any style infractions could see you barred from attending. It's important to check the legislation for your particular enclosure, as some areas have far more relaxed guidelines.

Can you wear jeans to the races?

If there’s one item to avoid when it comes to raceday, it’s jeans. Give denim the day off, but if you want to wear trousers, there are plenty of stylish equivalents to your everyday true blue favourites. Why not try an elegant wide-leg trouser teamed with a pretty blouse and matching jacket for a chic look?

What do ladies wear to the horse races?

When planning an outfit, it’s better to err on the side of caution and go for the smart end of your wardrobe rather than casual. To avoid being denied entry, opt for modest dresses or jumpsuit styles with covered shoulders, preferably in a length that falls around or below the knee. For style inspiration, look towards The Princess of Wales' favourite outfit combination of a midi dress and a stylish pair of heels.

Another raceday regular is a headpiece. Many traditional horse race meets still require women to wear a millinery hairpiece or hat. If hats aren’t your favourite look, a chic alternative is an Alice band or subtle disc fascinator that is mounted on a narrow band and sits forward on the head. Just check any circumference size requirements for your particular event

Not sure what will suit you? Eliane has this advice:

“A headpiece should complement and balance the garment you will be wearing and can be as adventurous or as simple as you are comfortable wearing. Obviously, if you want to stand out - the bigger the better.

If you prefer a larger piece or a more traditional shape, the large brim with a low crown is a winner, or a saucer shape with elegant, understated trims looks effortlessly stylish too.”

Most importantly, be comfortable. That applies to your whole outfit, not just your shoes. Nothing ruins a look more than you feeling uncomfortable or needing to adjust it throughout the day, so really consider how long you'll be wearing your raceday ensemble. Treat is an opportunity to go all out and dress up for the occasion, being mindful of any relevant guidelines, so you can have the best time possible.

Namely at the Cheltenham races in 2014, and again at the Cheltenham Festival in 2018. The Duchess was swaddled against the November chill as she stepped out of her car upon arrival.

Her coat, by royal dressmaker du jour Roy Allen, is something of a mainstay in the duchess' wardrobe, proving that even the royals have old-favorite fashion staples they return to time and time again.

It was Camilla's cozy £220 hat that really stole the show, though, as she set it against minimal jewelry, simple brown suede boots, and her signature white-blonde blow-dry to ensure it stood out.

So polished did she look that it's hard to believe that the royal had stepped off a plane traveling halfway across the globe just a few hours earlier.

Having spent four days carrying out royal duties in Jordan and Egypt with husband Prince Charles earlier this week, Camilla attended the jumps racing event solo this afternoon.

During their excursion, the duke and duchess celebrated the culture, heritage, and achievements of the two Middle Eastern countries, though they were quick to stress that the tour was purely for business, rather than pleasure.

Describing their trip as 'quite tough', the duchess told reporters yesterday from the ministerial jet, per The Daily Mail, "It was quite tough.
