First impressions and fit

What started as a cautious trial quickly turned into something else entirely – these much-hyped leggings didn’t just perform well, they changed the standard for our tester.

A dress size 10-12 and measuring 159cm tall, Georgina chose these in a size 'small' – but initially had doubts before popping them on for a run.

"They looked so tiny and so short – I was convinced that I was going to have to wrestle them on," she said. "But that shifted immediately – they felt like elasticated silk and easily slipped up my legs and over my hips. The waistband felt like it hugged the top of my hips but didn't squeeze, and they were also the perfect length."

The moment her first workout was over, Georgina got back in touch. “The Sweaty Betty Power leggings are quite simply the best leggings I have ever worn," she said. “From the moment I slipped them on, I understood what all the fuss is about and why people rave about them.”

Comfort and support

Comfort is where Sweaty Betty Power Leggings leave the competition standing – particularly when compared to cheaper alternatives.

"The leggings have a really lovely density to the fabric – sort of silky and springy but not heavy," Georgina explains. "The elasticity of the fabric has noticeably more bounce – I kept thinking of the cartoon word ‘boing’ while wearing them because it felt like they were helping my muscles spring back into place."

Whether psychological or not, the impact was noticeable – Georgina felt she ran better in these leggings than in others, because of how the fabric moved with her body. “The fabric also sculpted my body without squeezing, so I felt supported but not restricted, and they are thick enough that I don't feel naked wearing them on the school run.”

Coverage and confidence

For many women, coverage is the real deal-breaker with leggings – but also where these leggings truly deliver. During rounds of obligatory squats, these remained reassuringly opaque with zero hint of VPL to worry about.

That confidence carried through into real life too. “I wasn't self-conscious wearing them," Georgina says. "I felt confident stepping out in public and found the leggings actually made me feel good in my skin.”

Value for money

This was initially the biggest barrier for our tester and the only real downside she highlighted in her review, but it's a perspective that softened after wearing them.

"The price point means that they are simply out of reach for many women, and although they are expensive, they are also genuinely really good quality,” she says.

Looked at more practically, however, she feels the cost makes more sense over time. "If you consider ‘price per wear’, it seems likely these leggings will represent good value for money."

“It is not just a brand name after all," Georgina concludes. "Sweaty Betty leggings are simply better quality than most. They far and away exceed my experience of any other leggings I have ever tried or owned.”

Final thoughts

The ultimate test for workout leggings is, of course, how you feel in them – not how you look when you glance in the mirror.

I admit, I'm picky about leggings, and until recently, I wasn't the kind of person who lived in them all the time. But it turned out I just hadn't found the right ones.

Truthfully, on first impressions, I was a bit terrified. Much like Spanx shapewear, when you hold these leggings up for the first time, you wonder if you've mistakenly ordered from the kids' section. They're tiny! Especially since I'd inadvertently picked a size smaller than I actually meant to...

However, once I put them on, I immediately felt more confident. They smooth everything out in the way that shapewear does, but not with the same level of compression.

They're almost more of a knitted fabric so if you're used to smooth, lycra workout leggings, they are very different. But to me, this makes them that bit more versatile - you can totally wear them as fashion leggings, as Claudia does on The Traitors and Strictly Come Dancing.

You'll notice she often wears them blazers or jumpers that fall past the hip. I think these leggings are thick enough to wear with shorter styles, but like Claudia, my preference is for that little bit of extra coverage.

Spanx Seamless Leggings: Comfort & Fit

Don't be put off by the word Spanx. I mean, I love their iconic shapewear, but I wouldn't want to wear it for 12-hour days. However, these leggings really are comfortable enough to wear all day long. The seamless design moulds to your shape, so the fit is absolutely flawless.

The last pair of leggings I bought were some Uniqlo HEATTECH thermals, and don't get me wrong, they did the job, but they're starting to go a bit baggy and I wished I'd sized down a bit. Whereas my Adanola leggings I love for exercise, but they feel too sporty to wear with chunky boots and knits at the weekend.

These are high-waisted (love) and exactly the right length for me. They're not at all see-through, and all in the name of research, I did a yoga class and went for a run in them. They fared well and didn't fall down - a real pet hate of mine.

On Amazon, it actually suggests hand washing these leggings, but let's be honest, nobody has time to hand wash leggings. So instead, I follow the advice of the Spanx website, which suggests a cold wash on a gentle cycle.

So far, so good. No fading, no loss of elasticity, they still look exactly as they did the day they arrived.

I've had my Lululemon Align leggings (in black) for the last four years, wearing them a few times a week for workouts - including jogging, strength training at the gym, yoga, and even indoor cycling. Without a doubt, they are one of the most versatile you can buy.

What are the Lululemon Align leggings like to wear?

In one word: comfortable! As these leggings are so lightweight, they have a 'barely there' and super soft feel that makes them the perfect partner for all kinds of workouts - not just the gentle yoga flows and Pilates workouts they are made for. I wear mine to do strength training at the gym sometimes and I've jumped on the treadmill in them for a gentle 5km run before.

This winter, I've paired them with my walking shoes - which are also in the Hoka Black Friday sale - and stepped out for windy weekend walks in London. If you get them in a darker colourway, they make for a discreet alternative to jeans under a trench coat.

As I'm a little taller than average, I went for the 31" leg and I found the waistband touches just above my belly button, so I never feel like they are falling down. That's something that even some of the best workout leggings fail to offer.

While they don't have a pocket in the leg for your phone, ruling them out as a contender for outdoor running or hiking leggings in my eyes, they do have one in the waistband for your keys and smaller essentials.

I've had my pair of Align leggings - easily some of the best black gym leggings - for four years. I bought my first pair during the lockdown to feel comfortable at home and on my daily walks, and I've had them in my rotation ever since. Despite hundreds of washes, the colour has barely faded - they are definitely still black - and the waistband is intact. The seams are still strong and there's no gaping at the ankle. What more can you ask for?

What are the Lululemon Align leggings meant for?

Strictly speaking, Lululemon's Align leggings are made for yoga, Pilates, stretching, and any exercise where being comfortable is the priority. The material is so lightweight and buttery soft, as noted, so they work for casual wear too.

If drawcord cardio-ready leggings (like the Sweaty Betty Power leggings) are top of the list for support, and gym-ready, breathable, weights-focused leggings sit in the middle, these are towards the bottom. While they have a high waistband, they aren't designed to support intense workouts or heavy sweating and don't have the same supportive feel as ones that are, so they very narrowly missed a spot in my top three legging choices out of the hundreds I've worn. That being said, they are a firm favourite and are constantly in and out of my washing basket - I wear them every week.

Can you put Lululemon Align leggings in the washing machine?

Yes! While these workout leggings are made for gentle flow, you don't need to be super gentle when it comes to washing your gymwear from Lululemon. The Align leggings can go into the washing machine - but on a 30-degree cold wash.

I'm a huge fan of Lululemon - I've had Align leggings forever and they have long topped my list of favourite gym leggings. I'd never heard of them before, but she made a compelling case and I'm always looking for pairs of the best workout leggings. Admittedly, when I found the brand on Amazon at £31, I was sceptical about the quality. But at such an affordable price, I took the plunge and opted for the CRZ YOGA Women's Butterluxe leggings in 25-inch black faux leather. With a little extra shine, if they didn't pass the squat test, the faux leather look would be nice for every day with a pair of white trainers. 

I was convinced the CRZ Yoga Butterluxe leggings wouldn't come close to the comfort and support of my beloved Lulus - but I was wrong and I cannot underestimate how incredible these leggings are. 

As the name suggests, the material is buttery soft and feels luxurious against my skin. The fit (which is true to size) is perfect, with enough stretch to move comfortably while providing support to make me feel held in. They also create a lovely silhouette on my legs and so I feel confident when I wear them. They are, hands down, the best Lululemon alternatives you can buy. Oh, and they pass the squat test too!

Yes, the CRZ Yoga Butterluxe leggings pass the squat test, making them an excellent choice for fellow fans of strength training. I've had my pair for well over a year and wear them at least twice a week during my CrossFit workouts, and they show no signs of wear. They also haven't deteriorated over time or with washing - although I'd always suggest learning how to wash gym clothes to be on the safe side. 

In the photo below, I am stretching the fabric to show the faux leather shine, but also how under pressure, the material remains opaque. 

I'm also always asking my friends who spot me (lucky them) in the gym if my leggings are cracking (pun very much intended) under the pressure, and so far, it's always been a firm no.

Based on my experience, and thousands of reviews on Amazon, CRZ Yoga fit is true to size, so your usual dress size should fit nicely. As these leggings are designed to be activewear, they are quite stretchy, but I would stick to regular sizing for the best experience.

CRZ Yoga is an activewear brand owned by Guangzhou Jumi Network Technology Co Ltd, a leading company in China, that focuses on affordable technical athleisure wear. It is available to buy almost exclusively in the UK from Amazon, with Prime Delivery available on subscription. 

The weather might still be unpredictable, but spring is certainly in the air and it's time to change up our workout wardrobes for the warmer days on the horizon. Enter, H&M's new SoftMove collection with super soft, functional, and lightweight fabric.

H&M's SoftMove collection was released earlier this year and includes staple pieces, everything from pairs of the best workout leggings to sports bras and jackets, designed for low-impact activities like yoga and Pilates. However, it only took me a couple of sessions to learn that range is capable of so much more than this.

The SoftMove sports tights are super comfortable and lightweight with a barely-there feel that makes movement easier, especially when sweaty. However, they are also surprisingly supportive thanks to some key design features - and what's more, they are available for under £20 in the H&M sale right now.

H&M sports leggings review: An overview

The H&M SoftMove Sports tights are high-waisted gym leggings, available in various colours from deep black to bright green. They feel incredibly soft to the touch thanks to the predominantly polyamide makeup and they are comfortable to wear for hours on end, while also being stretchy and supportive enough to support all kinds of movement. 

This not only makes them a must-buy for those who regularly practice the activities these leggings were designed for - namely, yoga and Pilates - but also for anyone looking for comfortable leggings for gym workouts, hiking, walking, and even lounging. 

H&M sports leggings: Design

The stand-out design feature of these leggings is the material. Made from 83% polyamide and 17% elastane, they are so soft to touch and feel super comfortable even after wearing them for a few hours - a rare find, unfortunately. Yet, they are also stretchy enough to help you move through your yoga poses and workouts easily. 

On first impression, the seam that goes through the middle of the front panel in the leggings might be off-putting. It raised alarm bells in my head since a seam here can be a one-way ticket to camel toe, making you feel uncomfortable and exposed during exercise. I didn't find this to be a problem though as the material is fairly thick, so the seam stays out of the way. 

My favourite feature of the H&M SoftMove Sports tights is the high waistband, however. This gives the leggings a surprising, ultra-supportive feeling that you wouldn't expect from leggings designed mainly for mat workouts. It's this unexpected support that takes them away from being suitable only for yoga mat workouts and makes them a great choice for more dynamic stretches and sessions, like intense forms of yoga, full-body Pilates workouts, and strength training. Measuring 5.5 inches in width, the band stretches up to the bottom of my rib cage. Although, I'm a little taller than average, so this will be even higher for some people. 

A band like this not only provides extra coverage for when you're in downward dog or the bottom of a squat but it stops your leggings from slipping down - which has to be one of the most annoying things that can happen during a workout.  

They are also full-length, meaning the bottom of the tights touches the top of the ankle, and don't have pockets. I didn't find this to be particularly problematic as I wear my H&M SoftMove Sports tights for workout classes and walks mainly, where I have a bag to carry my essentials, it's worth bearing in mind if you're going to wear them to the gym. A pair of the best gym leggings with pockets - or the SoftMove Pocket-detail sports tights - may be a better option here. 

H&M sports leggings: Performance

As noted, the H&M SoftMove Sports tights are made from a functional, lightweight fabric, designed for workouts such as yoga, barre, mat and Reformer Pilates, so they naturally faired well during my low-impact workouts and stretching sessions. I could move without an issue and the super-soft material kept me feeling very comfortable on my way to the studio, during the workout, and on the way home. In fact, I could have worn these leggings all day without an issue. The same cannot be said for many other pairs of leggings I have. 

I was curious to see the limit of the H&M SoftMove Sports tights, so I put them through their paces in a strength training workout at the gym - and I was pleasantly very surprised. They were very supportive, with the high waistband playing a key role in keeping me covered and feeling comfortable, and the soft material didn't show sweat marks as easily as I thought it would. Only after 40 minutes of squats, lunges, and a dumbbell workout did I see small sweat patches appearing around the crotch and waistband. My leggings are black though, so the colour perhaps hides them more. 

I've also worn these H&M sports leggings on two hikes and multiple casual walks. They look great, pair well will just about anything, and although the material is lightweight, it doesn't easily snag on brambles and bushes along country paths and wrong turns - trust me. 

For anything heavier than this, I'd recommend a fabric designed to wick away sweat. When these get sweaty, they feel heavier than some other leggings I've had. This is totally fine if you're just in the gym as I was - but I imagine this would get uncomfortable if you were on a run, for example. 

H&M sports leggings: Price

At full price, these H&M sports leggings are £27.99, putting them on the cheaper end of the spectrum for a pair of the best black gym leggings. Other colourways, such as the purple, plum, and green options, are on sale at the moment for under £20. 

In my eyes, the price is well worth the investment if these are in your budget. Compared to the likes of Nike, Sweaty Betty and lululemon, who sell their super soft leggings for up to £100, these are budget-friendly. They may even be one of the best lululemon alternatives. I've also had other pairs of H&M leggings that have lasted me years in constant rotation, so I have faith these will stand the test of time.

Should I buy H&M sports leggings?

Yes, if you're in the market for a new pair of leggings for the warmer seasons, I can't recommend the H&M SoftMove Sports tights enough. They are some of the most comfortable yet supportive leggings I've ever had, making them a go-to for yoga studio sessions, strength training, long walks, and lounging around. 

I'd always suggest opting for a darker colourway to be on the safe side when it comes to sweat marks, but that's ultimately down to personal preference - and what's available online. The brighter colourways make for a perfect addition to any summer workout wardrobe, especially if you're doing low-impact workouts where you won't be getting too sweaty.

What's the rest of H&M sportswear like?

In general, H&M sportswear is excellent. Many people consider this budget-friendly fashion brand to be the go-to for basics and the latest trends - but it also has good-quality activewear for almost every activity and season. 

SoftMove and DryMove are H&M Move's primary two sportswear collections. The key difference is the material used in the leggings, sports bras, shorts, tops, and jackets. While Softmove is all about functional, lightweight materials that make it easy to move in whichever way you want, DryMove is made up of functional fabrics designed to wick away moisture and keep you comfortable on the move. I've also had various pairs of leggings and a pair of the best running shorts from this collection too, which I rate highly for value for money and durability. 

Victoria Beckham is a pro at off-duty styling and her monochrome leggings, hoodie and trainers look proves activewear can look put together. 

While we all love wearing a pair of the best white trainers and our best workout leggings, many of us reserve these items solely for the gym. While it might be easy to think that with an entire fashion label at her beck and call, Victoria Beckham would exclusively wear activewear in the gym and probably only steps out in her most stylish designer looks - we'd be very much mistaken!

Claudia Winkleman's Khaki Leggings

We're still thinking about this outfit from the last series. And while the standout pieces - the tailored winter coat and cosy, high neck knit - were key fashion talking points, we also had our eyes on the piece that subtly held its own, Claudia's khaki leggings. With a trouser-like weight, the slender fitting design worked seamlessly with the rest of the block colour palette, but it was the slimline shape that allowed the masculine tailoring and weighty sweater to not look overwhelming on Claudia's frame. Elongating her silhouette, the leggings were discreetly tucked into some Hunter wellies.

Pricier than Spanx, Claudia Winkleman's leggings were from the classics range of American clothing brand, Wardrobe.NYC, a high-end label that produces chic and edgy pieces that lean into androgynous tailoring and smart formal wear.

"They are constructed from a bonded lycra that suit any shape and will make you feel amazing," Claudia's stylist Sinead McKeefry tells us.

Claudia Winkleman's Velvet Leggings

Making the heritage look cool once more, Claudia Winkleman fused gothic romanticism with Highland elegance with aplomb, pairing these velvet leggings, with a sharp black velvet blazer by The Vampire's Wife. Truly, it showcases why the presenter has become such a style icon.
