I'm longing to break out my jumpers but so far in September we've been having to think of more summery autumn outfit ideas because of the weather. Before we know it, things will get a lot colder so we might as well make the most of the sunshine and reach for versatile staples like jeans and shirts that can be layered up later on.

Clodagh McKenna relied on that timeless duo during her recent trip to New York City, where she stepped out in a Sézane Joris shirt with wide-leg jeans and a suede bag from Free People. For comfort day-to-day, I'd probably stick to white trainers or flat brown Chelsea boots and mid-blue jeans like hers are complemented by a range of light and deeper shades. Sometimes it also feels like indigo or black jeans should be what we're wearing in autumn/winter but lighter denim can still be given a seasonal twist.

Clodagh did this by adding a chestnut suede shoulder bag and the cosy texture of the material and warm neutral hue were very September-appropriate. A white shirt and jeans are so minimal that you can embrace more colour with your accessories without them overpowering everything.

The rich corduroy fabric balances country-inspired design with city-ready flair, and the warm camel shade will work with any autumn outfit ideas. Susannah Constantine is no stranger to talking honestly about clothes and confidence. Best known for her work alongside Trinny Woodall, the TV presenter and author has spent decades helping women navigate fashion. Now, as she launches a shapewear collaboration with Shapermint, I asked her about the shapewear pieces she swears by, how her style has changed over the years, and the importance of comfort when getting dressed.

Her five-piece edit includes leggings, shaper shorts, and the bra she says is the most comfortable bra she's ever worn. What's refreshing is her strong belief that the best shapewear shouldn't be about women trying to make themselves smaller. "I really, really believe it has got nothing to do with weight for me. I don’t care how much I weigh, I’ve worn shapewear in every size."

To begin with, I ask her what her favourites from the collection are, and she says, “The bra has been a game changer for me because I have spent my entire adult life since I had children looking for a comfortable bra. I was someone who, as soon as I walked through the door, before I’d even taken my shoes off, I was taking my bra off. So that has been a game-changer."

Living in the countryside has naturally changed the way Susannah dresses, and these days she says getting dressed is "very much about comfort" and that her style is low-key. She reveals that she still makes an effort when working from home because she likes to feel put together. "I would never in a million years write in my pyjamas all day because I just think that’s bad for a woman’s self-esteem."

As well as comfort, Susannah reveals that she cares about longevity when it comes to updating her wardrobe, saying she would rather buy pieces she knows she’ll still be wearing in 10 years. She often finds pieces on Vinted, a great shopping tip for getting a better price on a designer item.

Although she says her style may have become more low-key, she still likes getting dressed up. We move on to talk about party season dressing, and what she wears for special occasions. "I love a really good velvet jacket, and I’ve got one in navy velvet that I wear all the time. I’ve also got a really great long, fishtail dress, but it’s got these sort of frilled sleeves, which I think I wore in the shapewear campaign. That’s something I think I’ll be able to wear for years."

In terms of everyday wardrobe essentials, she relies on denim and well-made T-shirts. "I’m a big fan of Uniqlo T-shirts. I buy those in bulk. My favourite T-shirt of all is one that was given to me by a friend, by Bella Freud. I love her stuff."

She stresses the importance of investing in a good pair of jeans, mentioning several brands including GAP, Donna Ida, Mother and Agoldes. "I love jeans. I will invest in jeans because I wear a pair probably five days out of a week. I feel like it’s good to invest in them... Mother does great jeans. I have a pair of Agoldes which I’ve had for maybe 30 years, which have stretched, but I can still fit into them."

When it comes to body confidence, her attitude is simple and positive: "I want to show my shape more subtly these days. And I do feel very good. I do feel comfortable about my body."

When I asked her how to combat insecurity or lack of confidence, something everyone deals with in life, she offers some sage advice. "It’s remembering that everyone feels the same, and you are a bit of a freak if you are in love with your body and you feel completely confident about it."

And when it comes to her styling tips for women now, Susannah’s message is refreshingly uncomplicated: “keep things simple.” She admits she has experimented with different trends over the years, only to look back and realise they weren’t right for her. But she is equally resistant to the idea that women should follow a strict set of fashion rules. "We’re all different shapes, different sizes, different ages," she says. "Fashion is about experimentation and finding what is comfortable and what suits your lifestyle."

Nobody’s Child is one of our favourite British clothing brands and has long been loved for its dresses. Lorraine Kelly’s gingham midi dress is certainly one of the standouts. She's pictured below wearing the Nobody’s Child Sicily Midi Dress, which features a pleated bodice and short puff sleeves to a modest and incredibly flattering neckline. The empire waist draws the eye up for the illusion of a longer torso, while the rest of the dress flows seamlessly.

But this natural knit can often come at a serious price tag, and while I have, on occasion, invested heavily, when it comes to everyday, easy-to-wear autumn pieces, high street cashmere has revolutionised the knitwear game.

The best cashmere jumpers no longer need to cost the earth, and John Lewis' affordable, quiet luxury aesthetic has meant that this year, the British clothing brand's cashmere is not to be missed. With a selection of key silhouettes - crew, V-neck, cardigans and brushed styles - there is a rainbow of colours to choose from, so there is something for every taste.

I recently got my hands on this gorgeous pink cashmere crew neck from John Lewis, and it is the comfiest sweater I've had in ages. A sensational burst of colour, I got multiple compliments on the shade on my first wear. Paired with navy, it pepped up my whole look, and the slim-fitting but not overly tight shape, high neck and fine knit made it a perfect partner to my kilt skirt.

Crafted from 100% cashmere, it's available in sizes 8-20, and I took a size 16, which I would say makes it pretty true to size. The ribbed cuffs and hem ensure a fitted element, trapping out the breeze and ensuring a better shape.

The crew neck is quite high, although you could still easily wear a shirt underneath, pulling the collar through for additional layering; it delivers good winter coverage across the chest for warmth.

With 11 colours to choose from, there is everything from classic black, navy and beige, which will underpin your wardrobe whatever the season. I am yet to wash my new cashmere knit, but when I do, it will be hand wash only. I tried a cold wash on several cashmere jumpers at once last season, and let's just say I'm having to build my stock afresh this season. And of course, with cashmere, you run the risk of moths. These are the moth traps I use to keep the pesky jumper munchers at bay, and I've found them super effective. Finally, at the end of the season, or as needed, bobbly knits can be tamed with a jumper shaver, but always try a small, discreet patch before diving straight in.

I've loved Rixo's dresses and skirts for many years now. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the British clothing brand is second to none when it comes to occasionwear.

The chicest way to wear a top like Cat's is layered underneath a sharp blazer – colourful lace will instantly lift darker neutrals.

Continuing its phenomenal run of success, M&S celebrated 100 years of dressing the nation today, with a runway show at London Fashion Week. And what an impressive presentation it was - you'd never guess it was high street and not designer.

Models included Lara Stone, Jodie Kidd and Erin O'Connor, whilst glamorous guests such as Dame Joan Collins, Jessie Ware, David Gandy, Katherine Jenkins, Jamie Redknapp and Kelly Hoppen watched on from the front row.

The show is being streamed on the British clothing brand's website at 6pm tonight, but the 100 Years of Fashion collection is already available to buy, so if you're worried about missing out, don't wait to watch the show. The outerwear was my personal highlight up close - from Lara Stone's white coat with faux fur cuffs to Erin O'Connor, who immediately made me want a puffer coat. The party season-ready tailoring and dresses were beautifully made, and the good news is the prices aren't any higher than you'd normally expect from M&S. You might know Lisa Snowdon best from her early modelling days, presenting on This Morning or her very insightful Instagram series on Menopause; however, in between her busy schedule, she agreed to catch up with woman&home on a chilly autumn morning. Although I was expecting to walk away from our conversation solely with fashion in mind, I came away thinking a lot about the role confidence plays when it comes to getting dressed, and with a refreshed perspective which can be best summarised by her statement "fashion should be fun!"

“As I’ve got older, I like to experiment a bit more and give less of a damn about what people think” – a sentiment that was carried throughout our call, where we discussed a range of topics, from her early modelling days to the power of a good bra. After asking her to define her style in three words, she declared, "experimental and eclectic," and finally "classic", a term which contrasts the first two, but it transpires that timelessness is extremely important to Lisa when it comes to styling.

Her autumn/winter must-haves include a "good jacket, jeans, a blazer, a round-neck T-shirt, a great shirt and tailored trousers". She explains that any good capsule wardrobe should be able to be dipped in and out of throughout the seasons and years, rather than constantly updated with fleeting trends. If you're looking to build autumn outfit ideas that are easy to put together, getting your basics right is the best place to start, and Lisa knows this more than anyone.

She stresses the importance of making sure the pieces in your wardrobe work together, rather than buying items in isolation. “I like things that all kind of work together”, a piece of advice that's worth following when shopping for any new season; however, for Lisa, a good outfit starts with finding the best bra.

"A good bra can change your silhouette... I always think that regardless of what you’re wearing, whether it’s a T-shirt or a little black dress, get the shape right with the underwear. It makes such a difference.”

Moving on to talk about the changing seasons, she reveals she finds it hard to choose between summer and winter styling. "However, I love this colder season because you can mess around with layering, and I feel like I'm stepping into my power in autumn."

"This season there are some nice, heavier fabrics, like really nice men's tailoring; I think that looks super cool. I really like that sort of androgynous aesthetic. I feel like that's what I've been stepping into."

"I'm looking forward to wearing jackets. It really toughens up an outfit. Even if you've just got jeans, or a really nice long skirt or a maxi dress, you can kind of toughen it up with either a suede, funnel neck or oversized jacket".

"In terms of footwear, I like things that are comfy and look great with everything, and that are really versatile. I like a kind of Western ankle boot with not too much heel. I think a small heel suits my aesthetic, and they look nice with maxi dresses too."

I had to ask her about her favourite jean styles, as she has a reputation for wearing great denim. She says she's currently loving a straighter leg, particularly because they work with everything from ankle boots to the most comfortable trainers. However, her other favourite cuts include bootcut and flared styles – something synonymous with one of her favourite eras of fashion: the 70s. In terms of shades, she says, "Dark denim can make your legs look longer".

Lisa's genuine passion for empowering women through fashion is so clear throughout our conversation. And her latest role as Confidence Ambassador for the fashion app called Hey Savi ties in perfectly with this. She describes the app as "Shazam for fashion". Essentially, it helps shoppers find fashion items or similar pieces by searching for items from a single photo.

The overarching piece of advice that I found myself thinking about after our conversation, however, was "If you've got something fabulous, don't save it for best". And she's right.

I did sheepishly confess to her that I had bought a 1970s dress several months ago that I had barely worn, and she rightly told me, "Just wear it!". It's such a simple idea, but even as someone who works in fashion, I fall into the trap of buying pieces I love that end up hanging in my wardrobe as I wait for the perfect invite.

This piece of fashion advice applies to everyone at any age, and it aligns with her pledge to encourage women not to feel as though they should "blend into the background," as well as her belief that fashion's purpose is to be fun.

Over the past year, navy blue has found itself in the fashion spotlight more and more, stepping up to replace black as the new neutral to rely on. Caroline Quentin certainly got the message when she appeared on Lorraine in an all-navy ensemble, adding a pair of bold yellow trainers to make her autumn outfit really pop.
