It would be easy to look at the Shark Style iQ Hair Dryer as another vacuum cleaner brand jumping on the hair tool bandwagon. But since its launch in late 2021, the Shark Style iQ Ionic Hair Dryer & Styler has steadily grown a fanbase of beauty consumers and experts alike. So what is it about Shark's tool that's made such a splash?

If you’re in the market for the best hair dryer, you may have already heard about the Shark blow dryer, or, to use its full name, the Shark STYLE iQ Ionic Hair Dryer & Styler. There's no denying the shape and style of this hair dryer are distinctly reminiscent of the coveted Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer, however, while its price tag sits it at the top end of the market, Shark's iteration is significantly cheaper – appealing to those with smaller budgets for a new hair tool. 

Putting the Shark Hair Dryer vs Dyson Supersonic debate to one side, the Style iQ boasts many of its own unique features such as intelligent attachments, a compact design and concentrated airflow. But is it the dryer for you? Woman&home's Group Beauty Director, Sarah Cooper-White, and Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, tested the model to bring you all the intel you need to make a decision.

What's the Shark hair dryer design like?

Pros: Neat design, smaller than the Dyson Supersonic

Cons: Quite heavy 

On first impression, the shape of the Shark Style iQ Hair Dryer feels inspired by the Dyson Supersonic. It's got a small, compact and circular head while the motor is contained in the handle. That the attachments attach to the dryer magnetically is another similar feature. 

Despite weighing a relatively heavy 730g, we found that the neat design and smaller size of the Shark dryer made it very easy to manoeuvre. The black and rose gold colourway is stylish and there are three heat settings and three airflow settings, which allow us to customise the speed and the heat to suit our hair types.

We did notice a few key differences between this model and its main competitors, however. As soon as we picked the Shark up and started using it, we noticed it feels bulkier than we expected. If, like us, you prefer your hair dryer to have a bit of weight whilst you style, then that won’t be a bad thing. It doesn’t weigh a tonne, like some of the more old-fashioned hair dryers on the market, so if you’re looking to replace an older, heavy dryer with this then you’ll be happy. If, however, you’re used to the lightweight feel of, say, the ghd Helios, then you will notice a difference.

How well does the Shark Style iQ hair dryer perform?

Pros: Dries hair fast, eliminates frizz 

Cons: May feel too gentle for some 

In terms of the actual user experience and results, we found the powerful motor and highly concentrated airflow of the Shark Style iQ Hair Dryer to be far better than many other models in terms of drying and smoothing hair. It rough-dried the hair very speedily and did a great job of eliminating frizz. 

Even with the heat and airflow both set at their maximum levels, it didn't feel overly hot or like it would damage the hair. But it did work quickly – taking around five minutes to dry a head of long, fine hair. It certainly feels gentle as you work with it, but it was missing a bit of "blast", which some users may find anticlimactic if they like to feel the power of a dryer. That said, we can imagine some people won't miss that feeling at all, particularly if they have fragile or thinning hair.

We liked the long 2.5m cord, which we found was enough to cover the distance to any mirror in any room. And while you can't really sense them working, we trusted that the ions released by the dryer were helping us create a smooth and shiny finished style.

Does the Shark hair dryer come with extra attachments?

Pros: Nozzle and diffuser work well to enhance styling 

Cons: Only two attachments are included with the basic bundle 

This is probably the factor we loved most about the Shark Style iQ hair dryer. With the most basic bundle, you get a nozzle and a diffuser included, which are the two attachments that team woman&home tested. For £20 more than this bundle, you also get a smoothing brush attachment in the box. The priciest bundle option also includes this third attachment and the AirWave waving tool, which our beauty writer has thoroughly tested as part of our Shark FlexStyle review.

All of the attachments are pretty smart. In particular, the precision 2-in-1 nozzle gets top marks. There’s a little lever to change the depth of the nozzle from being fully open for rough drying to much narrower when you want to direct heat down the hair for a sleek result. In our years of hair tool testing experience, we've never encountered another model that offers this and it was extremely useful not to have to mess around with different attachments when getting to grips with how to blow dry hair with Shark's dryer.

There is also a diffuser that features adjustable prongs so you can adapt the tool to suit your hair and, cleverly, the heat is automatically adjusted when you change the styling attachment. So if you have curly hair and add use the diffuser to dry, the airflow and heat will be gentler than if you use the precision 2-in-1 nozzle.

What’s not good about the Shark Style iQ hair dryer?

Noise-wise the Shark blow dryer is slightly louder than its rivals the ghd Helios and Dyson Supersonic. Although in all fairness, that's mostly because the Dyson is so unusually quiet that, if you’re used to it, you’ll find almost any blow dryer fairly loud in comparison. But compared to many cheaper and older hair dryers on the market, the Shark still feels light years ahead in terms of noise. 

The W&H Verdict

Pros: Effective, modern hairdryer that's kind to hair 

Cons: Still quite expensive, might not have enough oomph for some

If you’re looking to upgrade your existing hair dryer and want to tailor your blow-dry experience to your hair type then, in our opinion, you’ll love the Shark Style iQ Ionic Hair Dryer & Styler. It feels modern, the powerful motor dries hair quickly and the intelligent stylers are a big selling point. If you want a high-end, technically advanced dryer but aren't sure if you can afford the Dyson, this is a good compromise. 

The sleek design is attractive enough to display on any hair dryer stand and also makes it portable, lending itself well to travel. That said, £200 or thereabouts is still a big investment for a hair dryer. In fact, the Shark hair dryer does seem very pricey for 1600 watts when there are more powerful dryers on the market that have cheaper price tags. But power isn't everything and if you want an intelligent, kind-to-hair and premium product, this is a good investment.

If you're considering investing in one, reading a Dyson Airwrap review beforehand is a smart idea. Why? For one thing, the Airwrap is the most talked about hair styling tool of the century so far – partly because of its advanced technology, partly its considerable price tag. If a tool costs hundreds of pounds then it must be pretty special, but you still want to do your homework before purchasing. 

Dyson started its haircare takeover with the launch of the Supersonic Hair Dryer in 2016, known for being one of the best hair dryers with a powerful yet quiet design. The Airwrap followed in 2018, designed to operate as a do-it-all styler with attachments that dry your hair as well as smooth, curl and wave. It's also known for only using hot and cold air instead of plates that apply direct heat to style and create shape. 

Though it first launched in 2018, the Airwrap is still so popular that it's regularly sold out. Ask any beauty editor and they’ll tell you that one of the questions they're most often asked is, "is the Dyson Airwrap worth it?" If the original deal wasn't enough, Dyson continues to innovate and improve the Airwrap. The attachments were re-engineered in 2022, changing the curling barrels _ which now style in both directions rather than just one – and improving their functionality to suit a broader range of hair types. This feature is a review of the 2022 edition, although we keep this page updated with the latest news on the tool as and when they come. 

Our beauty editor’s Dyson Airwrap review

To bring you a comprehensive Dyson Airwrap review, I've been using my own for over a year and a half, washing and styling with all of the various attachments that come with the Complete Long kit. 

Initially, there is a bit of trial and error involved as you figure out how to use the Dyson Airwrap in the best way for your hair type, but essentially my beauty-tester eye has assessed how easy the Airwap is to use, how polished the results are and how long they last. 

Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler Design

When Dyson first forayed into hair styling tools, its technology revolutionized the game. Without giving you too in-depth of a science lesson (I’m a beauty editor, not an engineer) it utilises the "Coanda effect" to draw hair towards the barrel and style it with air, rather than with direct heat like the best curling tongs would. 

The Airwrap is the main gadget onto which you screw one of the different attachments depending on your desired style, be it smoothing your hair into a sleek, straight finish, or creating a bouncy blow dry. With three speed settings and three heat settings, you're also able to adapt the styling to suit your hair type. 

What attachments come with the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler?

You have the option to personalize your Airwrap attachments when you buy the Multi-Styler direct from Dyson, or you can purchase one of two "Complete" bundles – one of which has slightly longer barrel attachments for hair that’s chest-length or longer, like mine. 

A ready-made bundle will kit you out with a 30mm and 40mm barrel, a smoothing dryer and flyaway attachment, a round volumizing brush, one firm smoothing brush, and one soft smoothing brush.

As for the very latest developments, in November 2023, Dyson announced that it was also releasing a diffuser attachment and a larger round brush for even bouncier blow-dries. These join the  other brush, comb, and barrel attachments that are available separately, all of which I've broken down below. 

• Coanda dryer: A 2-in-1 dryer nozzle with the new smoothing tool built-in. This tool is perfect for roughly drying the roots and removing excess water before you style with the curling barrels. The smoothing tool is, frankly, genius, as it flattens all flyaways to help you create a flawlessly smooth finish.
• Curling barrels: Re-engineered to now curl in both directions, these barrels are your go-to for creating close-to-heatless curls and waves. There are three different widths depending on how big and bouncy you like your curls: 30mm and 40mm, which come as standard with the Airwrap, and 20mm.
• Wide tooth comb: Designed specifically for very tight curls and coily hair types, this attachment helps to elongate and shape the hair while you dry and style, as well as add volume.
• Round brush: A classic vented round brush head, this is great for creating a smooth blow dry with bounce and adding volume and shape throughout. A must if you like to swoop curtain bangs, '70s-style. This attachment is also available in a smaller size for shorter hair and the newer, larger size.
• Soft smoothing brush: Perfect for creating straighter, sleeker styles that retain a little volume, this brush lends itself well to finer hair types. This attachment is also available in a smaller size for shorter hair.
• Firm smoothing brush: Similar to the soft smoothing brush, but for hair that's thicker and more prone to frizz. The firm brush is also best for straightening or partially drying hair that's thick or very curly before styling, and it's another that's available in a smaller size for shorter hair.
• Diffuser: The second of the two newer attachments, Dyson's Airwrap diffuser is engineered to create an even dispersal of heat through your curls. It's an exciting addition to the line-up, given that the Supersonic's is one of the best diffusers for curly hair. This brings the Airwrap in line with competitor tools from brands like Shark, which include this attachment with every purchase.

As mentioned this famous tool had an update in 2022, with its snazzy attachments now re-engineered for even better performance. A big bonus of this is that, with the original Airwrap, you previously had two different barrel attachments for each direction you can curl your hair. Now, there’s only one of each size barrel, complete with a dial to change the styling direction, so no need to keep changing the attachments during your styling session. These new attachments are also compatible with the older Airwrap, so existing Airwrappers can get in on the easier styling action, too.

How well does the Dyson Airwrap perform: curling barrels

Any new Airwrap owner will tell you that the barrel stylers take a little getting used to but practice makes perfect, as they say, and it doesn't take long to get the hang of them. I'd never used the Airwrap until I got my hands on my own a few months ago, but I haven't struggled to get to grips with it. If any strands of hair from your chosen section aren't drawn towards the barrel, you can either wrap them around the barrel or move the Airwrap back and forth very slightly to encourage it to pick them up.

The cold function is also particularly useful here, as it allows you to set your style in place before withdrawing the barrel – something you won’t get with, say, a curling wand. They’re definitely the star of the Airwrap show and I found bouncy styles lasted all day, if not longer. 

How well does the Dyson Airwrap perform: brush attachments

The round vented brush attachment is decent, but I felt it could be longer to style bigger sections of hair. A wider brush head option could also be good for a more voluminous blow-dried look. It’s by no means a bad attachment, though, and it's useful for adding a bit of volume to the topmost layers and for swooping curtain bangs or larger face-framing sections of hair.

As for the soft and firm smoothing brush, these are very reliable if you're after a sleek, blown-out effect. I use the firmer brush when drying my hair straight and tend to take this approach over straighteners. Our Head of Shopping Millie also has naturally curly hair and prefers to use these attachments to create a more sleek look. "When I use my Dyson Airwrap, it's the brush attachments I gravitate to," she says. "I always used to struggle when trying to recreate the hairdresser's blow dry technique, brush in one hand, hair dryer in the other, wrestling my unruly hair as it frizzes up around me. You get the picture. So when I tried the Airwrap, it suddenly made that freshly-cut look a lot more accessible to me. 

"I honestly use these attachments a lot more than the curling barrels and if, like me you're worried the Airwrap isn't suited to your hair type, I was really encouraged to see the recent release of a diffuser attachment, which means it's totally ousted my hair dryer now!"

How well does the Dyson Airwrap perform: flyaway attachment

My hair is prone to frizz and flyaways (so the firm smoothing brush lends itself better to my hair than the soft one for a straighter style). Because of this, I wouldn’t have said no to an even lower speed setting. But that’s not a massive issue as the new flyaway attachment – which is built-in to the dryer nozzle – soon fixes this. It is, in short, incredible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hair tool be able to completely flatten flyaways as well as this does. I might be slightly in love with it.

I'd also recommend bearing in mind how well your hair holds a curl when you use other styling tools before you pick up the Airwrap. I know that my hair holds fairly well because of its ringlet pattern (muscle memory, if you will), but if your hair drops out fairly easily, make sure to prep your hair with the best hair styling products to give your strands some hold, and use that all-important cold shot function.

What's not good about the Dyson Airwrap?

No surprises here, the price of the Airwrap is its biggest drawback. No matter how excellent the tool or how cutting-edge its technology, for many people spending almost £500 on a hair styling tool isn’t an option (or at the very least not something they can do on a whim). For those who aren’t particularly dextrous with hair styling tools, it'll also likely take a bit of practice to get to grips with the Dyson Airwrap’s Coanda effect. But the brand has a few demos on its YouTube channel for each of the attachments to help you learn from home. Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler review: my verdict

Now to return to the question I asked all the way back in the intro of this Dyson Airwrap review: is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? If you are going to use it all the time and you can afford it, then yes, I do think that this is a great tool. It's versatile and essentially combines one of the best hair dryer brushes, smoothing tools and curling tongs in one. (We've also deemed it one of the best hair dryers for fine hair in our dedicated guide.)

That said, I don’t think I could hand on my heart say that I’d happily give up all other hair styling tools and only use the Airwrap for the rest of my life. There are tools I turn to for certain looks, and even the brand offers a separate hair straightener (which you can find out more about in our Dyson Corrale review). But for bouncy loose curls, retro blow dries and smooth and sleek finishes that last well, it really is a winner.

What Dyson products were in the sale last year?

Last year, we saw discounts on the majority of Dyson’s products, from cordless vacuums to hair tools and air purifiers, fans and more.

In both regions, Dyson itself offered impressive discounts of up to £100 and $220 on its vacuums, air care and hair stylers, and with free gifts available such as presentation cases for the Dyson Supersonic and charging docks for the cordless vacuums, you could nab an even better saving. But it wasn’t just Dyson slashing prices: we saw up to £170 off on cordless vacuums at Littlewoods in the UK, as well as huge savings such as $200 off on a Dyson V10 Absolute at Walmart in the US.

We also saw rare discounts on the brand’s ever-popular hair styling tools, such as the Dyson Corrale, which is one of the best hair straighteners for thick hair, and limited-edition versions of the Dyson Supersonic. The Dyson Airwrap had £130 off in the UK, which, considering the coveted styler has an RRP of almost £500, is not a saving to be taken lightly.

When it came to air treatment products, we were happy to see incredible deals with up to $220 off at Dyson itself, on a popular tower fan/air purifier. In fact, air purifiers and fans from the brand saw the biggest discounts across the range, with savings being around the $200 mark when you shopped straight from the retailer.

Top tips for shopping the Dyson Cyber Monday sales in 2023

• Sign up to newsletters. It’s worth signing up to the newsletter on the Dyson site to ensure that you’re one of the first to know when new deals drop. We expect the deals to be as popular as ever, so you’ll want to be ready to shop the discounted products.
• Don’t wait around! While we did see some great offers on Dyson in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales last year, we also noticed that plenty of products went out of stock by the Monday. This means that although you may spot an even bigger reduction in price on Cyber Monday or throughout the Cyber Weekend, there’s no guarantee the stock will still be around, so we’d advise snapping up a deal quickly on Black Friday.
• Always check the RRP. When shopping Dyson Cyber Monday deals that aren’t offered by Dyson itself, be sure to double check the actual RRP of the item on the Dyson site. Some sites may inflate the RRP when offering Dyson deals, to make it look as though the discount offered is much better than it actually is. Make sure you know the product’s RRP and that the new price is actually worth shopping. In general, Dyson do price match the deals offered by other stockists, so the Dyson site itself is always a good place to start for money off.

What to buy in the Dyson Cyber Monday sales

If you're planning your sales shopping but aren't sure what you might actually want to purchase, it's worth considering the brand's entire offering, and how each product category might suit you.

• Dyson vacuum cleaners: Over the years, the Dyson brand name has become synonymous with quality vacuum cleaners, so if there's one thing to look out for in the Dyson Black Friday sales, it's one one of the iconic cleaning machines. Often, these are subject to the biggest discounts during shopping events like Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day, so if you're in the market for a new vacuum and like Dyson's offering, it really is worth purchasing one during the deals. You might unnecessarily pay an extra £150-£100 if you don't!
• Dyson hair tools: A few years ago the brand launched its now-cult hair dryer, the Dyson Supersonic. It has since become one of the most popular hair dryers on the market for all types of hair. Its popularity led to the release of the brand's all-in-one styling tool, the Dyson Airwrap, which is one of w&h's best hair straightener brushes. As mentioned, these items are very rarely on offer, so if you do happen to spot a deal, we'd seriously suggest picking it up. They are absolutely a pricey option, but can offer fantastic results if you are willing to make an investment.
• Dyson fans/air purifiers: If there's one home gadget that has become a sure-fire status symbol, it's a Dyson fan/air purifier. These look sleek in the house, emit cool air without the rumbly noise of a traditional fan, can purify the air, or act as a dehumidifier if your space tends to get a little damp. You can also get fans/air purifier that offer both cool and heat options to keep you comfortable throughout the year. Like the vacuums, these fans/air purifiers tend to see fantastic discounts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, so it's one of the best times to snap these items up if you've already decided you want to buy one.

Does Dyson accept returns?

Yes - if you find you're not happy with a Dyson product you've bought online, outside of shopping events you can return the machine for a full refund within 30 days of the delivery date. Dyson will cover the cost of return shipping, which is a big bonus, as this isn't a given with many retailers at the moment. You can also return the item in-store if you wish, although this may be a bit trickier given that there are only 200 physical Dyson stores across the world! 

It's worth noting that refurbished Dyson products, or products purchased from the Dyson outlet, cannot be returned, unless they arrive damaged or faulty.

Is it worth paying for Dyson?

Whether or not to invest in a Dyson product is a personal decision and will likely depend on your own budget and priorities. W&h beauty editor Aleesha Badkar owns a few Dyson products and says each of them leaves something to be desired.

"Ever since it launched in 2018, the Airwrap has been one of the most coveted hair tools in the industry. No exaggeration. 'Is the Airwrap worth it?' is probably the beauty question I get asked the most. Personally? I would say no," Badkar says. "While I love how easy it is to use, the comfort of the weight and the addition of so many different attachments, the strength of the air is just not enough for my naturally thick and curly hair." On the other hand, Badkar says the Corrale straightens her long, thick, frizzy hair like no other, only taking 10 minutes. 

Badkar also owns one of Dyson's fans and says is great aesthetically and has amazing functions to carry you through multiple seasons, but it could use more power. 

"The fans are great. Super sleek, streamlined to fit into small spaces, smart features like a breeze or a full blast, 360 oscillation and a sleep mode - but again, like the Airwrap, the power is the problem. Double the power that it emits, and it would be perfect. Fine for spring, autumn and winter months, but will definitely leave you wanting in the hotter months of the year," Badkar says.

And if you're wondering about the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, beauty editors Jessica Beech and Rhiannon Derbyshire say the hair dryer is worth every penny.

"I have thick, naturally curly hair that I have to battle with to get a sleek finish, but I always feel like the Dyson is on my side of the fight," Beech says. "It makes it easy to smooth out curls and kinks without using extreme temperatures - which means less damage. It’s also impressively lightweight, so I never end a blow-dry feeling like I’ve had a workout."

Thanks to its innovative and advanced engineering, the Dyson Airwrap is easily one of the most famous hair tools on the market. Also contributing to its fame is that it has a hefty price tag, making Black Friday and Cyber Monday the perfect opportunity to invest in the styler for less.

Which Dyson Airwrap should I buy?

At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two models. But on closer inspection you'll see that each styler has been designed with different hair types in mind – making the choice between the two, a pretty important one.

• Straighter and/or finer hair: Arriving with less attachments, the Origin is specially geared towards drying and curling, meaning it will work best on naturally straighter hair or those wanting to add loose yet bouncy curls. Meanwhile the Straight + Wavy bundle of the i.d. has all the attachments you could need, with the added bonus of app-powered styling.

Is the Dyson Airwrap actually worth buying?

The biggest question on most shoppers minds: is this cult classic hair tool actually worth the splurge? Woman&home's former staffers Millie Fender and Amelia Yeomans put the styler to the test on their different hair types.

"I've got the most unruly, frizzy hair and I have absolutely no problems when it comes to holding a curl," Millie says. "When I first bought the Airwrap, I thought I'd use the barrel rollers most, but I've actually become a lot more dependent on the volumising brush to get a blowout effect that stays smooth for days. My boyfriend also uses the smoothing brush every morning in place of a hairdryer, so it's definitely an investment that's paid off over the past year."

After bleaching her hair, Amelia loves the gentle nature of the Airwrap on her strands: "I can get a gorgeous smooth blow dry with my Airwrap, and I know that it isn't hurting the health of my hair, which is a huge plus for me," she says. "I also love that it takes my wavy hair from wet to straight with several different attachments depending on the style I'm after, which saves me a lot of time."

However, Amelia notes the older Airwrap probably isn't heavy-duty enough to create more intricate styles for those with thicker and drier strands. "I would say that, due to the condition of my hair, it requires quite high heat to hold styles like curls and beachy waves," she explains. "The Airwrap doesn't quite get hot enough to keep curls intact all day, so other curling tools that can get to 200°C+ tend to work better for me. I usually use the Airwrap curl tools when I want a looser wave to my hair; it does that perfectly for me."

It's a regular household chore for most, but just how often should you vacuum your home? Is once a week enough or should we be doing it daily? We asked the experts to help determine if there is a definitive 'right' amount.

Vacuuming needs to be a regular household cleaning chore because there can be unpleasantness hiding on every surface, in every room. So, just like knowing how often you should wash your sheets, it's good to know just how regular the task should be.

"Household dust is a mixture of indoor and outdoor pollutants and often includes dirt, skin cells, hair, clothing fibers, bacteria, mold spores, pollen, microscopic specks of plastic, and dust mites," explains Alexander Provins, Director EMEA at Blueair. "If you suffer from allergies and asthma, dust mites can be a major indoor trigger that makes symptoms worse."

With this in mind, we enlisted the help of professionals, from research scientists in microbiology and cleaning experts, to determine how often we vacuum to stay on top of dust and allergens to improve the air quality in our homes.

How often should you vacuum your home? 

While every household will have its own routine and cleaning checklist, experts unanimously recommend vacuuming at least once a week. Much like how often you should be cleaning your home depends on your home and your lifestyle.

Matthew Lee, a senior research scientist at Dyson says, "The best advice for cleaning wooden floors is to vacuum at least once a week to prevent dirt from building up. For me, I try to give the high-traffic areas of my home a little extra attention, such as kitchens and bedrooms, as the floor can quickly collect a lot of dirt, debris, and stray hairs."

"Cleaning two of the ten spots; ceilings, walls, mattresses, skirting boards, pet baskets, lamp or lampshades, curtains or blinds, stairs, and sofas every week means you can achieve a whole house deep clean every month. This is a highly recommended frequency to maintain a clean home without getting overwhelmed by the daunting task of trying to deep clean your entire home at once."

"Carpets can hide dust and dirt between their fibers, as well as harbor microscopic life – such as dust mites, molds, and allergens – all of which can impact your wellbeing. So, it’s important not to wait until your carpet looks visibly dirty before vacuuming," Matthew warns. "Vacuuming high-traffic areas twice a week and the rest of your carpeted spaces once a week is enough to keep dust and dirt at bay."

Lynsey Crombie, cleaning expert, TV star, and Queen of Clean agrees but recommends cleaning high-traffic areas even more regularly. "Vacuum the stairs once a week and the rest of the house twice a week. But high-traffic areas, such as home entrances, door mats, and kitchens should be vacuumed daily," she advises.

"Vacuuming habits really are a personal preference but our data tells us most people will do a full home vacuum once a week, typically 25 minutes in an average-size house," explains Lupe's Pablo Montero, former Dyson research and development engineer. "I would personally concur with a once-a-week minimum." 

If you have a busy household with children or pets, you might find yourself reaching for the hoover more often, however. In favor of a daily vacuum Geoff Johnson, director at ROIDMI UK advises "For a busy household, particularly one with pets, vacuuming carpets, hard floors, potentially furniture, and even beds every day will dramatically reduce allergens in the home."

"It doesn’t have to be a complete and time-consuming ‘spring-clean’ every day, but regular vacuuming with a HEPA (a high-efficiency absorbing filter) or better-rated vacuum will keep particles and dust from building up to levels that trigger allergic reactions. Think of it like the pollen count, by regularly vacuuming with a high-quality cleaner, you will keep your home’s allergen count low most of the time."

So the answer, much like how often you should be cleaning your home depends on your home and your lifestyle.

Should you dust or vacuum first?

Logically we assume dusting first to be the best practice if you're looking to get rid of dust in your home. But turns out there are good reasons why on some occasions you should vacuum before you dust.

"Unfortunately, the very act of traditional dusting with a cloth will lift a lot of dust and other allergens into the air, where they will come into contact with skin or get breathed in," explains Geoff. "If the surface you are cleaning can be vacuumed first, with a small brush or crevice tool, we would always recommend running over the area first with the cleaner to pick up the bulk of the dust and particles.

"Conversely, if the area isn’t suitable for vacuuming, perhaps like delicate ornaments or glassware, we would suggest dusting before you vacuum the rest of the room" Geoff suggests. "In this case, the dust and allergens that will be lifted into the air are likely to get sucked into the vacuum cleaner as you clean the room. 

“Using a wet cloth to clean surfaces is fine, but the sequence of cleaning tools matters. Dampening dust on floors – even fine dust invisible to the naked eye – could mean that you’re creating a habitat more favorable to dust mite and mold proliferation," warns Monika Stuczen, a research scientist in microbiology at Dyson.

"Dust is most effectively removed with a vacuum cleaner first, before going on to wipe surfaces. Even then, it is important to use a vacuum cleaner with effective filtration and sealing technology to ensure that whatever you vacuum remains trapped and is not expelled back into the home.”

How to vacuum properly: 6 tips from a Dyson engineer 

We asked Tom McVey, Principal Engineer at Dyson how to vacuum more efficiently, to get the best results when looking at how to deep clean a carpet, how to clean hardwood floors, and generally keep surfaces dust-free.

Tom begins by explaining the process, “In general, dust particles are mechanically and/or electrostatically ‘stuck’ to surfaces. A vacuum needs to apply a force to particles for a certain time in order to dislodge them and entrain them into the machine.

“The force is supplied by the airflow from the machine, as well as the brush bar and cleaner head. The force can be increased by changing to higher suction settings, whereas the ‘time’ can be increased either by moving slower or completing more passes over an area."

Now that you know the science behind the process, it's time to get started!

Here are Tom's top tips on how to vacuum properly:

1. Choose the right machine

Choose the best vacuum for the job. Different vacuums are designed for different floor types and home sizes. "Different machines will perform differently depending on the surface they’re used on. Owners will always need to balance the performance they want with the time it will take to get an optimum clean," says Tom.  

"Some machines will be engineered with hard floors in mind and will struggle on thick pile carpets, for example. Choosing the right machine for your home will make a big difference to the ease and speed with which you’re able to clean your home," says Tom.

2. Use the correct setting

You'll achieve a better clean by using the right setting for the surface you are vacuuming. "Most machines have options depending on your floor type and user preferences that can optimise performance. For example, our 'Boost mode' is designed for ground-in dirt and debris and Eco mode is designed for general cleaning. Auto mode, however, takes this decision out of your hands and will intelligently adapt to the floor type thanks to in-built micro-processors."

3. Attach the best tool

Tackle different areas of the home with different tool heads to ensure you can get into every corner and crevice. "Use the right tool for the right job: making sure you choose the right cleaner head or accessory tool for the job can make a big difference to performance and ease-of-use."

5. Vacuum over the same spot

Tom advises going over the same spot more than once. "Go over the same spot but not too often. More passes over an area will also give the machine the best chance of cleaning well, but any more than two or three times gives minimal increase according to our research."

6. Vacuum little and often

"Vacuuming frequently on areas that receive more footfall will help to stop dirt building up and getting trodden into your floor." says Tom. Using the best cordless vacuum is helpful for this because they're generally lightweight, easy to set up and quick to move around. Alternatively, the best robot vacuums can be handy for quick, daily cleaning - they cannot provide the same performance as a vacuum cleaner, but they are a handy supplementary tool.

The Dyson V11 sits in a very clever position in Dyson’s line-up. It’s old enough to have dropped to a far more accessible price, but modern enough to still feel premium in everyday use. If you want the Dyson name, design and engineering without paying flagship prices, this is the model that makes the most financial sense. In testing, it repeatedly proved that you don’t need the newest iteration to get excellent results.

In head-to-head comparisons with the newer Dyson V15 Detect, suction power was impressively close across carpets, rugs and hard floors. The V15’s laser and upgraded floorhead give it a slight advantage on very fine dust, particularly on polished surfaces, but in real-world cleaning the difference was minimal. The V11 still delivers deep carpet extraction, strong edge cleaning and dependable pick-up of crumbs, grit and hair. Dyson claims up to 60 minutes of runtime; in practice, I found closer to 40–45 minutes on mixed settings, which is still ample for most homes. Crucially, you retain intelligent suction adjustment and the LCD screen that shows remaining runtime, so it doesn’t feel like a compromise.

What makes the V11 the best value Dyson is that it focuses on what actually matters: power, reliability and ease of use. You lose the laser illumination and a handful of newer accessories, but you don’t lose cleaning performance. It remains lightweight, nimble and instinctively easy to reach for at the end of a long testing day because I know it will clear up what weaker vacuums leave behind. Most premium Dyson vacuum

The Dyson V16 Animal is Dyson at its most ambitious. As the newest and most refined model in the cordless line-up, it feels every inch the flagship. From the moment you start using it, there’s a sense that every small friction point of vacuuming has been reconsidered and improved. It isn’t just about raw suction power, although that is exceptional; it’s about making whole-home cleaning feel seamless, intuitive and, dare I say, satisfying.

The headline upgrade is the redesigned floorhead, which intelligently combines soft and bristled rollers into one agile unit so you can move from hardwood to carpet without stopping to swap attachments. In open-plan homes especially, that small change transforms the rhythm of cleaning. Dyson has also introduced a clever compression mechanism inside the bin that condenses dust and debris, meaning you can vacuum for longer before emptying. The 70-minute runtime sounds excessive on paper, but in real life it’s liberating. I’ve used it for multiple sessions without needing to recharge, and the conical brush rollers continuously lift long hair without wrapping, making it particularly impressive in homes with heavy shedding.

Ergonomically, this is the most comfortable Dyson I’ve tested. The trigger has finally been replaced with a one-touch power button, and the weight distribution has been shifted lower, so it feels lighter and more athletic in the hand despite its power. The wand even folds to reach under kitchen islands and low furniture without awkward bending. All of that refinement comes at a price, and it is undeniably a splurge. But if you want the very best Dyson has to offer, with thoughtful engineering, exceptional suction and features that genuinely reduce effort, the V16 Animal earns its place as the most premium option in the range.

Best wet dry Dyson vacuum

The Dyson V15s Detect Submarine feels like the natural evolution of everything Dyson has built before it. From the V8 to the V11 to the V15, each release has nudged the benchmark higher. With the V15s, Dyson has done something more ambitious: it hasn’t just refined dry vacuuming, it has properly cracked wet cleaning too. In my testing, this is the most effective wet-and-dry cordless vacuum I’ve used.

The reason is the Submarine attachment. This isn’t a standard floorhead that happens to tolerate liquid; it’s a dedicated wet roller system. A motorised roller is continuously washed with clean water from a 300ml tank, while a separate 360ml tank collects the dirty water scraped off as you go. In practice, that means you’re always washing your floors with fresh water rather than pushing grime around. It lifts spilled drinks, muddy paw prints, dried kitchen splashes and everyday film in one pass, leaving hard floors evenly damp rather than soaked. Switching between dry vacuuming and wet cleaning is straightforward, and the six included attachments make it feel like a genuinely complete system rather than a gimmick add-on.

Battery life is quoted at up to 120 minutes across different modes, though in reality I saw around 40–45 minutes of dry vacuuming and 15–20 minutes of wet cleaning per session. That’s enough to tackle a kitchen, hallway and bathroom in one go, though in larger hard-floored spaces you will likely need to empty the dirty water tank mid-clean. Maintenance is refreshingly simple: the dirty tank clicks out without splashing and the roller rinses clean under the tap. While some may prefer the auto-adjusting approach of the Shark PowerDetect, Dyson’s specialised attachments feel more precise and purposeful. Best budget Dyson vacuum

The Dyson V8 is the Dyson I recommend when someone tells me they want the brand’s performance, but not the brand’s price tag. It’s the most affordable model that still feels unmistakably Dyson in the hand: lightweight, nimble and far more powerful than most budget cordless rivals. If you don’t care about lasers, particle sensors or LCD screens, this is where the real value sits.

In my testing, it handled everyday cleaning brilliantly. On MAX mode, it’s genuinely punchy, brilliant for dried-on dirt and stubborn debris, though you only get around six minutes at that intensity. On its standard Powerful mode, I consistently saw closer to 40 minutes of runtime, which is more than enough for a small to medium-sized home. It picks up dust, crumbs and hair with confidence, and while it doesn’t have the intelligent features of newer models, the core suction performance is still impressively strong. You’re not paying for flourishes here, but you’re not sacrificing the fundamentals either.

I also appreciate how practical it is. The attachments click in and out effortlessly, handheld mode is light enough for above-head cleaning without arm ache, and the low-reach adaptor lets me glide under sofas without fully crouching on the floor. It wall-mounts neatly, doesn’t dominate storage space, and feels easy to live with day to day. For flats, smaller homes, or anyone upgrading from a corded vacuum, the V8 covers the basics better than anything else in Dyson’s range. It delivers the core Dyson experience (power, manoeuvrability and thoughtful design) at a price that feels genuinely budget-friendly.

Best robot Dyson vacuum

The Dyson Spot+Scrub AI Robot Vacuum Cleaner is unlike any robot vacuum I’ve tested. Dyson has completely rethought how these machines should work, and the difference comes down to its sensors. Not only does it map quickly and precisely, weaving through tight spaces and hopping over thresholds with ease, but its laser sensors actively identify dirt. In practice, that means it doesn’t just clean a room, it targets the mess. If it detects debris or a sticky spill, it will return to that exact spot and keep working until the sensors are satisfied it’s gone. When it leaves something behind, it’s usually because it’s a genuine stain rather than surface dirt.

The mopping system is equally impressive. Instead of dragging around a damp pad that smears grime, it uses a roller that self-cleans with hot water as it works, so you’re always getting a freshly rinsed mop on your floors. In my toughest tests — dried splashes, sticky patches, fine dust in hardwood cracks — it was relentless and methodical. Even hair on carpet, which many robot vacuums struggle with, was lifted with surprising ease. It’s also almost silent in operation, which makes it far easier to live with day to day than many louder rivals.

What really sealed it for me, though, was the intelligence behind the scenes. The app was refreshingly simple to set up and use, mapping my awkwardly shaped room in just 12 minutes and clearly flagging areas that needed extra attention. For comparison, the Shark PowerDetect I tested took well over two hours to map the same space. This Dyson feels fast, thorough and genuinely smart without being complicated. It is undeniably expensive, and that price will be the sticking point for many people. But in terms of precision, autonomy and sheer cleaning performance, it sets a new standard for what a robot vacuum can do.

Lightest Dyson vacuum

You'll have to re-think not just Dyson vacuums, but all vacuums when you consider investing in the Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones. It's not quite like anything else that they make - it's also unlike anything else on the market, which is what makes it so exciting.

The Dyson engineers took the 38mm diameter of their hair tools and transferred it to the handle of the Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones. It's slim, easy to hold, and at 1.8kgs feels as light as air. I don't know what they've done to how it moves across the floor, but "floating" is the only appropriate word: it moves in a way that's smoother and lighter than any other vacuum and yet that doesn't compromise the depth and speed with which it can pick up anything from dust through to hair and cereal. It's remarkable.

Without a big dustbin, it doesn't get too top heavy. In fact, the main tube of the vacuum is the dust bin. They've taken the clever compression feature that their newest V16 vacuum boasts, which means that you can cram 0.8L of dust inside. This is actually a surprising amount for a vacuum this small, but it won't replace your main vacuum for the whole home. Reliable, powerful, and versatile, this cordless vacuum covers all bases.

As a devoted Dyson owner, I didn’t expect to be won over so easily, but the numbers spoke for themselves. When I scattered 100g of flour and sugar on a hardwood floor, this vacuum picked up every last gram. It powered through a pack of hair extensions without tangling and had no trouble clearing two large handfuls of granola from the carpet. I honestly can’t imagine a vacuum outperforming those results.

Beyond sheer power, the Shark is packed with smart features. The folding wand makes it easy to reach under furniture without straining your back, the floorhead adjusts suction near skirting boards to catch more dirt, and it even stands upright on its own if you need to pause mid-clean.

For those reasons, and many more, I enjoyed using the Shark far more than any other vacuum I tested. It felt nimble and flexible, and I never had to think about emptying or charging; the docking station handled it all.

That makes it tough to find fault with the Shark. If I had one wish, it would be for a lower price, but I say that about almost everything: chocolate, wine, and diamonds. And if the Shark belongs in that category, well, that’s a good sign.

Best cordless vacuum

All the Dyson features, balanced by a reasonable price tag.

I’ve praised the Dyson V11 in plenty of reviews, and for good reason: it’s the best cordless vacuum I’ve tested. It delivers the power and sleek design you’d expect from Dyson’s newer models, and indeed plenty of cordless models, but at a far more accessible price simply because it’s an older iteration.

In head-to-head testing with Dyson's famously good V15, its suction power was virtually identical across most surfaces. The V15’s soft roller gave it a marginal advantage on polished bathroom floors, but in real-world cleaning, the difference was negligible. Dyson claims a 60-minute run time, which I found optimistic, but a solid 45 minutes of powerful, consistent cleaning is still impressive. Only the Shark PowerDetect lasted longer (70 minutes), which is why that model edges ahead in battery life alone, but not overall performance.

What truly cemented the V11’s place as the best cordless vacuum in our buying guide was instinct. At the end of a long testing day, with 12 vacuums scattered around me, it was the V11 I reached for without hesitation. I knew it would clear up the mess left behind by cheaper, less capable models, quickly and thoroughly.

While Dyson’s trigger-hold design isn’t for everyone, the V11’s lightweight, nimble build is hard to fault. You rarely need to vacuum for long anyway, because it consistently outperforms almost every other cordless I’ve tested when it comes to dust and debris pick-up. And really, what else would you expect from a Dyson?

Best vacuum for pet hair

A heavier option for harder jobs, especially picking up pet hair.

As much as we love our pets, I know I’m not alone in cursing the way dog hair seems to weave itself into every inch of the home. That’s why finding the best vacuum for pet hair was my top priority in testing. And after putting this one through its paces, I can confidently say, it delivers.

The Shark Upright Pet Vacuum has a reputation for corded-level power, and my tests proved it lives up to the hype. Faced with a whole-home clean, including a pack of hair extensions scattered across different floor types, 100g of flour and sugar, two handfuls of granola, and a week’s worth of daily mess, this vacuum cleaned up. Literally.

Despite its size, the main body is impressively nimble, easily reaching under sofas and kitchen islands. And when it came to tackling my narrow staircase, the canister ejected from the main body, transforming into the most powerful handheld vacuum I’ve ever used. Even with demanding tasks, the battery lasted a full 45 minutes, and by the end, my home was cleaner than I ever thought possible.

Yes, it’s a little bulkier than the Dyson V11 and Shark PowerDetect (it's actually the heaviest on this list), but that extra size translates to more power and more accessories, which makes cleaning up after pets much easier. Plus, it’s surprisingly affordable, especially if you catch it in the sales, where there’s always a great deal to be found.

Best wet vacuum

An all-in-one vacuum and mop that truly cleans up.

They say cleanliness is next to godliness, but what happens when you’re the gods of cleanliness? Dyson should know. With each new cordless vacuum, they’ve set the benchmark: first the V8, then the V11, then the V15. Now, with the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine, they’ve created the most effective wet vacuum I’ve tested.

You may not need every bell and whistle (in which case, the V11 remains a savvy pick), but if wet cleaning is part of your routine, the V15s is worth every penny.

Let’s be specific. The Submarine attachment is what makes this the best wet vacuum. It’s a dedicated wet roller head, meaning you’re not simply sucking up liquid with a standard floorhead. Instead, the motorised roller is continuously washed with clean water from a 300ml clean-water tank, while dirty water is scraped off and collected into a separate 360ml tank as you go. In practice, this means you’re always cleaning floors with fresh water, not redistributing grime. It will pick up spilled drinks, muddy paw prints, dried-on kitchen splashes, and everyday floor grime in one pass, leaving hard floors clean and evenly damp, not soaked.

As for run time, Dyson claims up to 120 minutes, but that’s split between different modes. In real-world use, I consistently got around 40–45 minutes of dry vacuuming, and 15–20 minutes of wet cleaning with the Submarine attachment — enough to tackle a kitchen, hallway and bathroom in one go. The only caveat? If you’re cleaning large hard-floored spaces, you’ll need to empty the dirty water tank mid-clean, as it fills up quickly — a sign it’s doing its job properly.

Emptying and cleaning the wet system is refreshingly fuss-free. The dirty water tank pops out with one click and empties cleanly without splashing, while the roller can be rinsed under the tap and left to air dry. Compared to traditional wet vacuums or mop systems, maintenance is minimal.

Some people prefer the Shark PowerDetect’s auto-adjusting floorhead to Dyson’s attachment swapping, but I’d argue Dyson’s specialised tools deliver more precise results. The V15s is also lighter, sleeker, and easier to manoeuvre than most wet-and-dry rivals. If you want a cordless vacuum that genuinely replaces both a vacuum and a mop, this is the one to buy.

Most affordable vacuum

The most affordable alternative for expensive vacuum.

It doesn't take a detective to see which vacuum inspired the Ultenic U20 Vesla's design. Doesn't it remind you of the wet vacuum that's in the spot above it? Whilst the two share lasers that show up dirt; a clear control screen; and a light, cordless design, there are plenty of differences. The biggest one is the price.

At just £159.99 the Ultenic is a really affordable vacuum. In my tests, it vacuumed up flour, sugar, and cereal really well. Yes, the filter clogged much quicker than any Dyson or Shark vacuums, but it still managed to clean the floor. I did have to make a few more passes over specific spots, but, again, at 20% of the price, you'd expect to make some compromises.

In my first assessment of the Ultenic, I thought it was a vacuum that might not stand the test of time and end up on my list of common mistakes people make with vacuums. The brand is relatively unknown (it was only founded in 2021) and it's one of the ones that pops up on Amazon, so you're not sure if it's even genuine. And yet, two years and one dog later, the Ultenic is still serving me well. More recently, I've noticed that the floor looks clean, but that other vacuums can pick up a lot more of that invisible dirt, so I'd say this is a good basic vacuum. If you're not willing to shell out for a big name brand, I think you'd be happy with this.

Best robot vacuum

Hands-off, reliable, and impressively thorough, this is the best of all the robots.

I resisted robot vacuums for a long time, but the Shark ThermaCharged UV Wet & Dry Robot Vacuum won me over. This one offers impressively easy function, incredible mapping skills, and stand-out versatility across floor types. It shouldn't come as a surprise though, this is Shark, after all.

Whilst this looks expensive, it delivers solid build quality, excellent cleaning on different floor types, a mop function, and a self-emptying system. It's easy to win any homeowner over with that kind of performance, but when you throw in the smart mapping, you'll wonder how you lived without the Shark.

There are other versions of the Shark PowerDetect Robot Vacuum, but this one is special for it's UV light that reveals dried stains and dirt that your eye can't see. It's both impressive and repulsive.

Using the app, you can control exactly where it vacuums, whether that’s focusing on high-traffic areas daily or responding to voice commands via Alexa or Google Home. Then, once it’s done, the Shark empties itself into a bagged base station, so you only need to think about it once a month. That makes it perfect for busy families and professionals alike. In this case, your vacuum really does all of your dirty work.

Best corded vacuum cleaner

It's not the most attractive, but it is robust and incredibly powerful.

At first glance, the SEBO X7 Automatic looks unapologetically retro. It's vacuum you might expect to see in a hotel corridor rather than a modern home. Whilst this might not be an aesthetic that inspires instant confidence, trust me: this machine is all substance, and very little nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake.

I was first drawn to the X7 after it was recommended repeatedly by people who truly know their vacuums: professional carpet cleaners, domestic cleaners, and vacuum engineers alike. SEBO has been manufacturing bagged, corded upright vacuums in Germany for decades, and while the exterior design has remained largely unchanged, the technology inside has quietly evolved and improved to take top spot in the market.

The floorhead is where the X7 really earns its reputation. It delivers an almost startling level of pickup, lifting embedded dirt and debris from carpets in a way few domestic vacuums can match. Yes, it’s loud. And yes, it’s big and heavy compared to modern cordless models. But if you have spacious rooms across one or two floors, and power is your top priority, this is the vacuum to choose.

One final detail worth noting: the X7 is available in a distinctive pink colourway, with proceeds supporting breast cancer charities, a thoughtful touch that gives this powerhouse vacuum a meaningful charitable edge.

Best premium vacuum cleaner

The luxury Dyson experience with versatility and neat features too.

The latest addition to Dyson’s cordless line-up, the V16 Animal is a premium vacuum that elevates everyday cleaning. Its standout upgrade is the redesigned floorhead, which intelligently combines soft and bristled rollers into one agile unit, allowing it to glide seamlessly from hard floors to carpets without requiring a head swap. It feels thoughtful, efficient, and importantly engineered to lighten the mental load of household chores.

Dyson has also introduced several clever features that you might not expect. One of my favourites sits inside the dust bin: a compression mechanism that condenses debris, preventing that fluffy, cotton-wool texture that usually fills a canister too quickly. In practice, this means you can vacuum far more before needing to empty it, a small detail that makes a noticeable difference during whole-home cleans.

Ergonomically, the V16 Animal feels like a response to long-standing customer feedback. Dyson has finally removed the trigger-style power button, so you no longer need to keep your finger pressed down while cleaning. The weight distribution has been rebalanced too, with more load sitting closer to the floorhead rather than in your hand. The result is a vacuum that feels surprisingly light and athletic to manoeuvre, yet delivers the kind of suction power Dyson is known for.

The generous 70-minute runtime may sound excessive, but in real life it’s quietly transformative. I’ve been using the V16 Animal in my home since July and rarely need to recharge mid-clean, or even after several sessions. The conical brush rollers are particularly impressive for households with long hair, continuously lifting strands without letting them wrap around the bar.

The only real hesitation is the price. If it were even £300 less, it would comfortably sit at the very top of my recommendation list, but for those willing to invest, this is Dyson performance at its most refined.

Best vacuum cleaner for small spaces

Super slim and petite, this compliments your main vacuum.

Nimble and quick, this petite vacuum is ideal if you have small spaces to clean or a large home that could do with a vacuum sitting in every room. The PencilVac is designed with plenty of signature Dyson features: rollers that don't get hair stuck in them, a super slim handle that sits nicely in the hand, and impressive performance. We loved it from first look, but it won us over in our tests.

The PencilVac is really designed for hard floors. Over linoleum, stone, and wood, this would simply glide. It felt like it wasn't even on the floor at times, but the impressive pick up across flour and granola proved that this was, in fact, working very hard. Even on carpets, we could pick up fine grains of flour with a couple of passes, so I wouldn't shy away from it if you have a home with rugs on the floors. I would recommend a different vacuum if your floors are all carpets though.

Another plus that comes with the Pencilvac is the small, fully rotational floorhead. This means it can squeeze into spaces, at tricky angles, picking up dust from under radiators and awkward corners. For us, it's a real winner.

As a small vacuum with the dust-bin integrated into the handle, this is neat. However, it won't cover the work of a larger Dyson or a corded vacuum. We see it as the perfect compliment to an already well-established vacuum.

How we tested the best vacuums

To help you find the best vacuum cleaner, our selection includes larger and compact vacuums at a range of price points, from good-value cordless models to more expensive, high-tech machines. You’ll find the most popular brands as well as a few newer names too.

Each vacuum cleaner has been tested on a number of criteria. This included:

• Design and handling: We record each vacuum’s exact weight (kg) and dimensions, then assess how those figures translate in real use. During testing, we look at how easily the vacuum manoeuvres around furniture, under sofas and beds (typically 15–20cm clearance), and up onto stairs, as well as how comfortably it can be used one-handed. Storage is also considered, including whether the vacuum can stand on its own or requires wall mounting, and how much space it takes up when docked.
• Tools and attachments: Each vacuum is tested with every included tool. We assess how long attachments take to clip on and remove, whether this can be done one-handed, and whether tools are stored on the vacuum itself or separately. We also judge usefulness in practice, for example, whether crevice tools can reach skirting boards and corners, and whether specialist heads (such as soft rollers or pet tools) make a measurable difference to cleaning results.
• Ease of use: From unboxing to first clean, we time how long assembly takes and note whether instructions are required. Controls are judged on intuitiveness, including how easy it is to switch modes mid-clean and read any onboard display. Each vacuum is used for extended cleaning sessions of 30–60 minutes, during which we assess comfort, noise fatigue, balance, and whether handling becomes tiring over time.
• Cleaning power and performance: This is the most heavily weighted category. Each vacuum is tested on both hard floors and carpets, using measured amounts of fine dust (flour and talcum powder) and larger debris (rice, cereal and pet hair). We record how much debris is picked up in a single pass and how many passes are needed for a visibly clean floor. Tests are carried out in the standard mode unless stated otherwise, with additional spot tests in boost or eco modes where relevant.
• Value for money: Finally, we weigh performance against price. Like the best air purifiers, premium vacuums can be a significant investment, so we assess whether higher-priced models genuinely offer better cleaning results, durability and features, or whether more affordable options deliver a comparable experience for less.

What vacuum cleaner do professionals use?

We all want to know what the professionals actually use in their own homes when it comes to appliances. When it comes to choosing a vacuum, professional cleaners and cleaning companies tend to prize reliability, durability and a solid performance over other factors (such as design, extra tools and storage), with many preferring:

• Numatic’s hard-wearing Henry Hoover machine
• Miele’s cabled and bagged models
• Dyson’s cordless vacuum cleaners

It's also interesting to know that Sebo makes a wide range of vacuum cleaners for the commercial market (including hotels, airports and hospitals) and uprights for professional use, often including similar features and technology on its domestic models, such as the Sebo Felix recommended by my carpet fitters.

However, while these models are expert-approved, it's worth noting that they aren't always right for domestic homes (as opposed to large corporate buildings, where cleaning teams tend to be employed mostly). Whether you want to know how to deep clean a carpet or how to clean an upholstered chair, the vacuums within this guide should be more than powerful enough to tackle any hoovering job you have.

Are expensive vacuums worth it?

Up to a certain point, the price of a vacuum cleaner corresponds to its build quality (with more durable parts) and how many added extras are included. For example, a £300 vacuum cleaner is likely to last longer than one that costs around £100, and should offer more versatility.

However, at the more expensive end of the market, price is more of an indicator of how much technology is packed in, meaning you’ll find features such as app compatibility, voice control, digital displays, and sensors. They may do a slightly better job of cleaning, or make some jobs more convenient. Whether the price makes it worth it depends on how much you value those high-end features in your regular cleaning routine.

Is a Shark as good as a Dyson?

Shark and Dyson both make excellent vacuums, so you can't go wrong with either. The answer of whether one is better than the other will depend on you and your cleaning needs. I find Dyson's vacuums to be generally lighter, more nimble, and much more elegant. Shark's are less pretty, but do a more thorough job, often for less of the price. If you don't like faff and you prioritise practicalities, Shark might have the edge.

How much suction power do I need on a vacuum?

A decent vacuum will offer 100-300 air watts of power. Stick vacuums tend to sit around 100-150 air watts; upright vacuums can reach up to 200 air watts; and canister vacuums will go up to 250 air watts. If you have mostly hard floors, you don't need to worry about the suction power. However, homes with carpets and pet hair will certainly want to go for vacuums with more suction power.

Is a bagged vacuum better than bagless?

As with most comparisons, the answer will depend on what you want. Generally, I've found that bagged vacuums tend to have more duction power, as the filter is generally integrated into the bag. This makes it much less likely to clog. You'll find that the filtration control comes hand-in-hand with allergen limitations, so bagged vacuums are much better if you have allergies.

On the other hand, bagless vacuums are a lot less faff and often a lot lighter and more modern. I much prefer maintaining a bagless model, especially since buying bags is an ongoing cost that also comes with environmental impacts too.

Should I get a corded or a cordless vacuum?

Generally, corded vacuums come with more power and suction, but they're heavier and harder to store. If you know you'll forget to charge your batteries; you want a bagged vacuum; and you're shopping on a budget, a corded vacuum is perfect. However, if you have a big house and you need a vacuum that's easy to handle, a cordless vacuum will be much better.

Not only are cordless vacuums lighter, technology has developed so that they often come with suction power that rivals corded vacuums anyway. The only downside is that these can be expensive.

How often should I vacuum?

Most experts recommend vacuuming once a week, but that depends on your home: high traffic areas, combined with kids and pets, might need more regular attention in the same way that rooms you never use might be able to last a little longer. How do I clean a vacuum?

To clean a vacuum, start by unplugging it and emptying the dust bin, tapping it gently to release trapped debris. Wash any removable filters with lukewarm water (if the manufacturer allows), then leave them to air-dry completely for at least 24 hours before reinserting. Check the brush roll for tangled hair and fibres, cutting them away with scissors and wiping the housing clean. Use a damp cloth to wipe down the exterior, hose and attachments, and check for blockages in the nozzle or tube. Regular cleaning like this keeps suction strong, reduces odours and helps your vacuum last longer.

You could pick any of the six vacuums that I've put on this list and be happy with a sparkling, clean home. Make sure that you know what you want from your vacuum with regards to floor types, pet hair, and other dust and debris and you won't go wrong. Alongside the £499.99 Dyson, they looked at the £479.99 Shark DuoClean with Flexology & TruePet and the much cheaper £199 Vax Blade 2 Max. And the budget option looks like it could be a worthy contender against the ever-popular Dyson cordless vacuum.

While testing the three models, Real Homes considered four different aspects:

• How the vacuums performed on different surfaces
• How easy they were to empty
• How long the batteries lasted
• Weight and size

The verdict on Dyson alternatives

While the Dyson V11 Absolute performed best on different floor types, as it automatically adjusted the level of suction needed depending on the surface, the Shark performed nearly as well, and the £199 Vax option held its own in the suction arena. The tester remarked that it wasn't as effective on hard floor surfaces, but still a good enough job and was even the easiest out of the three to move around.

The Vax Blade 2 also performed well alongside the Dyson when it came to the battery, overperforming at 47 minutes against the stated 45 minutes, while the Dyson ran for 65 minutes against the quoted 60 minutes. The Shark was the only model to underperform at only 53 minutes when the specifications promise 60 minutes. However, as this model boasts different settings depending on the surface, the tester suggested that the battery may run a little longer on the floor setting as opposed to the carpet one.

Like with the Dyson, the Vax also has the capability for a wall-mounted charging point to be set up and with a weight only 4g heavier than the Dyson, you'll barely notice a difference with this budget model. The Vax even features an easily detachable collection bin, making it easier to empty than the other two models, which both require you to remove the whole top half of the appliance before you can empty it.

So while the Vax Blade 2 Max may not come with quite the same suction powers or bragging rights as the Dyson, if you want to save yourself over £300 on cordless convenience, it's definitely a worthwhile purchase and one of the best Dyson alternatives.
