Look for ruching that gently grazes across midriffs, hips and thighs for the most curve-loving finish. Drapery that comes to a point, particularly on an angle, can be the most flattering choice, as it narrows, creating a nipped-in silhouette.

And while you can implement this technique across tops and dresses, when it comes to the correct foundations, shapewear in this instance will only help to support and flatter your curves further, offering the sculpting fit to make that draped detail truly shine.

There are some colours that complement each other perfectly and others we might not be as comfortable wearing together - like red and pink. Some people hold fast to the old fashion rule that these two shades are too similar and clash when worn together.

I’ve never been a big believer in these kinds of restrictions (I love blue and green together too) and neither is Good Morning Britain’s Charlotte Hawkins. The presenter is a big fan of wearing both red and pink and her latest look combined them in one single item from Boden.

She shared a picture of her wearing it on Instagram and in her caption declared that she simply "had" to give this dress a twirl. The skirt is voluminous and the tiered detailing gives it a gorgeous shape, though it’s made from unstructured, comfy cotton.

Regardless of which silhouettes you want to wear in the heat, choosing breathable materials like cotton and linen can help you to feel a little cooler. Charlotte’s dress has a notched V-neckline, puffed sleeves and practical pockets in the skirt.

This is a timeless and easy-to-wear shape, though what really makes this on-sale Boden dress stand out is the colour combination. You can get it in several different shades and Charlotte Hawkins went for the poppy red and peony pink one.

Primarily scarlet, the dress has intricate pink floral embroidery on the sleeves and stitch embroidery framing the neckline and running in a line on the skirt. It’s not an overwhelming amount of pink but the contrast brings depth and dimension to Charlotte’s dress.

Colour clashing can be incredibly effective and doesn’t have to be daunting if you go for a piece like this where the second hue is minimal. Pink and red also have similar undertones which makes them easier to pair together in one cohesive ensemble.

When it comes to what accessories to wear with a vibrant dress like this my advice is always to go for a less is more approach. The presenter matched her shoes to her frock and stepped out in red court shoe heels.

The colour might have been just as striking as her outfit, but the design was classic and the co-ordination also helped to mellow the final effect. Neutral shoes in general would work well with a piece like this, especially warm hues like cream or tan.

The same goes for bags and although Charlotte didn’t need a bag when she was live on-air, a tan crossbody bag would have finished off the look nicely. She does tend to match her accessories whenever she wears pink and red, though.

In June the ITV star wore a pink and red floral dress to Royal Ascot and in May she presented GMB in a gradient red-to-pink design. If it becomes a monthly occurrence, I can’t wait to see what pink and red outfit she’ll wear in August.

How to style yours

I'll admit, I am a little bit biased when it comes to this dress. When scouring the high street for what to wear to Royal Ascot, I tried on the Abi dress (pictured below), and honestly, I've kicked myself ever since for not buying it there and then.

Navy is such an easy and forgiving colour to wear, and although it's a big investment, at just under £300, this design will go seriously far in your summer capsule wardrobe.

It will work as one of the best wedding guest dresses, but team it with your best white trainers and you could wear it for a day in the office or a picnic in the park too.

I actually got engaged in a leopard print (of course!) version of this Rixo dress, so I already knew I loved the silhouette. But in the print of the season - polka dot - this dress is the best £295 you can spend on the high street right now. Thank me later!

Sheer fabrics can be challenging to style and for this reason, so many of us likely stay away from them and opt for easier designs instead. However, the sultry feel of a semi-sheer dress can be so beautiful and they aren’t all massively revealing either.

Someone who isn’t afraid to show us how to wear sheer pieces with confidence is Anita Rani. The broadcaster stepped away from ditsy floral summer dresses at the European Premiere of F1 with a fabulous sheer Rat & Boa Santino dress.

This approach to premiere fashion makes total sense as you won’t necessarily have the right occasion to wear a red carpet gown all that often. Anita’s dress, though, is something I’d love to see her wear again for another special event.

The Santino dress is made from a sheer mesh material and to balance this daring detail, it has long sleeves and a high boat neckline. Instead of the dainty ditsy floral prints that are always popular at this time of year it has a bold tulip print.

The floral motif runs across the bodice and is repeated along the bottom hemline of the dress for extra impact. With patterns, the starker the colour contrast, the more they stand out and Anita Rani’s Rat & Boa dress had a vivid turquoise-blue background and red flowers.

The combination is striking and the darker colour on the bodice meant that it looked slightly less sheer compared to the skirt. Beneath the dress, the broadcasting star was wearing Skims underwear for a streamlined finish and she finished off her premiere look with a pair of classic black Louboutin pumps.

Styling any summer dress can be a hard feat, especially when trying to find dresses to hide a tummy, but Kate shows us that pairing a maxi dress with a simple blazer can make any dress look effortlessly chic, and is a styling solution we all should be taking note of. This is why Ranvir Singh’s strawberry-patterned dress caught my eye so much when she wore it to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Preview Party on 11th June. A design like this is an easy way to bring a pop of colour in an understated way.

I was disappointed to discover that her exact M&S X Ghost dress isn’t available anymore, though I will still be taking a lot of inspiration from it for my seasonal looks. It has a vintage-esque style, with a neat collared neckline and puffed short sleeves.

The silhouette is elegant and modest, making it perfect for wearing to a christening or a garden party where you want to feel dressed up but still be comfortable. Ranvir’s dress is midi-length and although the bodice is more fitted, the skirt is flowing and loose.

The A-line silhouette is timeless and feels more low-key than a fit-and-flare with its voluminous skirt. Because of this, the presenter could easily have worn a pair of her best white trainers and added a raffia bag to make it seem smart-casual instead.

When you’re wearing patterned pieces the design can sometimes lend itself to being styled formally or for the daytime, but Ranvir’s strawberry-print dress works for both. It’s very delicate and small, meaning that it brings just a hint of colour.

Complete The Look

The red of the strawberries is complemented by the green leaves and pale blue flowers. Each hue stands out from the white base fabric without taking over.

Even if fruit prints aren’t for you, Ranvir Singh’s ensemble shows how much of a difference having a small amount of colour can make to a simple white dress. It’s not too out-there and bright polka dots or tiny flowers can achieve a similar effect to this strawberry pattern.

To make it subtler still, Ranvir accessorised with plain white slingback heels. This time of year, many of us go for flats or espadrilles like the Princess of Wales’s wedges as they are easier to walk on grass in than stilettos.

The presenter didn’t need to worry about this for the exhibition, though she still went comfy with a pair of kitten heels. They had a covered, pointed toe with a mesh upper.

Ranvir completed her outfit for the occasion with an array of different bracelets. On her right wrist there was a stack of silver ones and she wore a single gold one on her left wrist.

When she’s working on Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, she tends to stick to either fully bright pieces or entirely neutral looks. This kind of whimsical patterned dress isn’t something we often see Ranvir reaching for, but I’m really glad she did.

Emilia Fox proved this beyond doubt at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards when she wore a gorgeous Queens of Archive Delilah floral maxi. The actor hasn’t been spotted out in public for several months and she chose the perfect outfit for her red carpet appearance.

I often see floral dresses in soft, pastel shades but if Emilia Fox’s red blouse in Silent Witness has taught me anything it’s that she loves a pop of colour with her flower prints, especially red. I must admit, after seeing her BAFTAs look I might have been converted to colourful florals myself.

The red peonies weren’t too much but they definitely brightened up this maxi dress and made it feel very summery and fun. The green sleeves mellowed the scarlet slightly and the textured jacquard fabric was wonderfully elegant.

The neckline was a 40s-inspired V-shape and the puffed shoulders brought some subtle structure. Whilst I really love this silhouette, the main pull of a floral dress is the print, so it’s important to choose a shape that works for you and your style.

"Florals are such a timeless choice for occasionwear and we love the bold bloom print on Emilia's dress," says woman&home Digital Fashion Editor Rivkie Baum. "A style that will never date, floral dresses make for an excellent investment as they can be worn time and time again."

"Use the print as the colour palette for your outfit, selecting shoes, bag and a hat in one of the colours from the floral design to really pull your ensemble together," she explains.

Alternatively, metallics work with most shades. Emilia Fox went for a pair of platform Wyse London Bella sandals in gold.

These had a chunky heel and a secure ankle strap, with additional straps over the front of the foot. The cushioned sole is also a handy addition when you’re wearing heels as high as these.

The actor completed her ensemble with an iconic Lulu Guinness Lips Clutch bag in a neutral white tone. Even at smarter occasions like a wedding or garden party, you can inject some personality into a formal outfit with your bags and shoes.

The Lulu Guinness bags are so fun, but any slightly more unique design can bring a playful edge to a floral dress look. Just keep to more pared-back colours if you’re going for something a bit more out-there, to ensure it’s still very wearable.

Whilst certain types of jeans will surge in popularity in line with denim trends, denim dresses are incredibly timeless. Midi-length designs are our favourites and we couldn’t help admiring Ranvir Singh’s gorgeous Sosander one.

The broadcaster wore it to the Tina: The Tina Turner Musical’s 7th anniversary gala performance at the end of March. It’s one of those dresses we knew would sell out fast and already it’s gone in a lot of sizes on the Sosandar site and M&S.

There’s nothing we love more than a dress with practical pockets and Ranvir placed her left hand casually inside one as she posed for pictures outside the event. The silver buttons running down the front glinted in the light and were a subtle contrast against the blue denim.

Darker washes like indigo tend to feel more formal compared to light denim, but this blue tone struck a good balance between them. When it comes to versatility, a mid-blue colour like this is worth considering as it’s especially easy to dress up or down.

Ranvir wore her dress with chunky black ankle boots and the longer skirt draped over the top of them to create a seamless finish. This was a fabulous smart-casual outfit, but as we move out of boot season there are other types of footwear we’d choose.

For an April date night outfit we’d pair a flowing denim midi dress with block heeled mules or espadrille wedges. Both would give some elevation without you having to opt for stilettos. Black loafers or ballet flats would also look sophisticated, but if you wanted to make a denim dress more casual, then go for trainers.

Just like blue jeans, a blue denim dress is one of those items that works with any other colour too. It makes the perfect outfit base for neutral or vibrant accessories and bright red is particularly wonderful with denim.

Ranvir often gravitates towards vivid colours like scarlet and yellow, but at the Tina gala she kept things simple. Her glossy brunette hair was loose around her shoulders and her makeup was glowy and natural-looking.

She wore a black watch and a ring, but otherwise her denim dress and boots spoke for themselves. We don’t often see Ranvir Singh styling denim as she prefers dressing more formally for work, so it was lovely to see her in this polished but relaxed outfit.

Her appearance at the musical performance came the day before she wore a stunning chocolate brown Reiss dress on Lorraine on 28th March. She paired it with her beloved Zara bow heels and this would make another sensational April evening ensemble if you wanted something sleek and minimalist.

Just as roll neck jumpers and knee high boots will always be everywhere as soon as autumn arrives, spring and summer is the season where we see an abundance of floral midi dresses hitting the high street and online.

We have several in our collection and they make great wedding guest dresses as well as everyday outfits, depending on the material and silhouette. This year, though, we’ve been longing for something a little different and Queen Mary of Denmark has presented a floral maxi skirt as an equally elegant alternative. Her Majesty wore a floral Lasse Spangenberg skirt with a dramatic floor-sweeping hem for a Gala Dinner at the Élysée Palace on 31st March.

The event was hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron on Day 1 of Mary and King Frederik’s State Visit. We’re used to seeing the British Royal Family go all-out both when they host and attend State Banquets, wearing floor-length gowns, magnificent jewellery and often tiaras too.

In contrast, the Danish Queen went slightly more low-key but still dazzling on this occasion. Her maxi skirt was high-rise and had a fitted waistband that accentuated its fit-and-flare shape. Falling to an elegant maxi length, Queen Mary’s skirt also had plenty of volume thanks to the crisp pleats running down the front. It was grey and this neutral base made the delicate floral print shine even more in contrast.

Roses and other pink and white flowers wove their way across the skirt, surrounded by dark green leaves and beautiful pink birds. This design transformed an already stunning skirt into a work of art and it was perfect for this official gala dinner. The Queen of Denmark paired it with a Victoriana-style CLEA embroidered white shirt with blouson sleeves that was tucked neatly into the waistband for a seamless finish.

Although hers was an especially dramatic take on a floral maxi skirt, Queen Mary reminded us that we should never discount them as an alternative to dresses. They are great when you want a formal or smart-casual outfit as the longer length naturally feels quite elevated. You can dress them down by wearing a maxi skirt with a loose T-shirt and plimsoll trainers or espadrilles, or dress them up with high heels and a silky shirt.

Whilst you can of course style a midi dress in multiple ways, you can make a skirt look radically different with a lot less effort and they are even more versatile because of this. Her Majesty wore her skirt and blouse with a pair of Gianvito Rossi court shoe heels in beige satin and a fun, pearl-embellished clutch by Anya Hindmarch.

This bag is sadly no longer available but pearl bags are continuing to have a moment right now so there are plenty of alternatives out there that give a similar glamorous edge to an outfit. The Queen has had a lot of use out of hers so far in 2025 as she also brought this clutch on her and King Frederik’s State Visit to Finland in March.

The couple are in France until 2nd April and we can look forward to seeing Queen Mary wearing some more elegant outfits before they return to Denmark.

This is such an elegant aesthetic and saves you any of the potential hassle of fastening at the side that you get with genuine wrap dresses. Crafted from jersey material, Ranvir’s dress was comfortable but still looked put-together. These are two key boxes we want to tick when it comes to date night outfits and the vent at the back and side split also helps with ease of movement.

The TV star often reaches for vivid coloured dresses for work but this deep brown Reiss dress was equally beautiful, but more understated. Chocolate brown is a softer alternative to black when you want a neutral outfit and it works so well with paler hues like cream, beige and white which tend to be more popular in the warmer months.

We’ve spotted that Ranvir was wearing her beloved Zara black slingbacks with her dress on Lorraine and they’re clearly still a firm favourite in her collection. These shoes are under £30 and have a delicate stiletto heel and a fun and feminine bow at the front for a touch of detail. To make her outfit feel a little more summery and casual outside of the studio, Ranvir could easily swap these slingbacks for a pair of white espadrille wedges or brown sandals.

If you’ve been inspired by the way she wore chocolate brown in spring but aren’t as keen on dresses or ruching, then accessories are a good way to go. A brown bag is just as versatile and wearable as a black bag for daytime errands or evenings out - as are brown loafers or ballet flats.

I don’t ‘do’ dresses. Many moons ago, when I was in school, there was no option for girls to wear trousers, and even then I felt uncomfortable. That and falling flat on my face at a wedding while wearing a dress and heels in my early 20s (and subsequently flashing everyone) and my dress days were done.

Fast forward a couple of decades and nothing has changed. I live in 'jeans and a nice top' usually, and the more time passes, the longer I have simply overlooked dresses as an outfit option. And then I happened upon the Nobody’s Child Clara midi dress, and felt compelled to buy it.

The shoulders, the length, the colour - everything about it is so pretty, it was the first dress I’d seen that I could maybe imagine myself wearing. So I took a leap of faith, knowing I had expert advice on hand.

That's where Molly Smith, woman&home's Fashion Writer comes in. She told me how to make it work for my spring capsule wardrobe, right down to the accessories. She got back to me with the following insights on how to make it work in three ways: for daytime, smart casual (or day-to-night) and for special occasions.

"If you're looking for a way to wear a midi length dress in the daytime, a denim jacket is the perfect layer - denim feels immediately laidback, and in order to make a dress look more smart casual, a denim jacket holds all the answers." says Molly.

"However, you could also use other lighter jackets in cotton or linen for daytime styling; the trick is to get a piece that sits neatly on the hip as this will complement the longer silhouette of the dress, offering a flattering feel, anything longer may drown you.

"And in the spring/summer time, opt for some smart sandals. I always think tans or light browns pair well with all denim, and it will add some needed warmth to a black dress too. Black leather or suede sandals would work just as well, especially if you're heading to the office and you want to feel refined or polished.

"You could always experiment with bolder, brighter colours and choose some vibrant red leather sandals or add a pop of colour or a fun pattern with a handbag, tote, or crossbody."

Leather Jacket, White Trainers & Crossbody Bag

"To achieve an outfit that can transition from day to night, it's really key to opt for staples that feel elevated yet relaxed at the same time. A standout option to pair this black dress with is definitely a soft leather jacket - the perfect layer for springtime when the weather is unpredictable, and it looks sophisticated and stylish enough for wearing for both laid-back and smarter too. From wandering around a gallery in the afternoon to then going to your favourite restaurant in the evening, this a leather jacket works for all occasions."

"And in terms of footwear, I would suggest some of the best white trainers - comfortable enough for all-day wear but smart enough to wear 'out out.' Opting for some platform or chunky trainers would be my personal preference, as this gives you some added height without the discomfort of a stiletto. Plus, these Russell & Bromley flatform trainers never fail to impress - they're a firm favourite of Trinny Woodall too!"

"An added crossbody bag truly ties this look together, and here we went for a playful leopard print option to add a touch of fun to this monochrome look. I think if you're going neutral with your footwear and jacket choice a vibrant patterned or coloured bag can really make your look stand out from the crowd."

Heeled Wedges & Gold Jewellery

"If you're heading to a special occasion or simply looking to create special date night outfits, styling your dress should be kept as straightforward as possible. Here the dress should do all the talking!" Molly advises.

"Wear it solo, especially in warmer weather, and opt for some stylish (but let's not forget about comfortable) shoes such as wedge-heeled espadrilles and add some refined gold or silver jewellery.

"In the spring or summer months, you might be headed to an outdoor event, which means that wedges, platforms, or squared heels should be favoured over stilettos so you can walk with ease on grassy terrain.

"If you're looking to really go all out, then a sparkly or colourful clutch bag can make all the difference; just make sure you choose complementary tones. A great styling trick is to choose accessories in the same colour but slightly different tones; for example, if your shoes are a tanned leather, then a bronze handbag will look fabulous. Or match a silver clutch bag with silver-tone jewellery for the full effect"

There's a style of dress Kate Middleton wore 'all the time' before she was the Princess of Wales but ditched after she took on the role, according to a fashion expert.

Catherine's style has been keenly watched and admired by fashion fans all over the world ever since she stepped into the royal spotlight.

From her blazers, heels and high street picks to her enviable jewellery collection and high end designer items, the contents of Kate's wardrobe never goes unnoticed when she steps out in public.

Taking to TikTok to highlight how Kate appears to have swapped from above the knee hemlines to dresses and skirts with longer silhouettes, fashion journalist Erin Fitzpatrick, said, "[Kate] has stopped wearing above-the-knee dresses. She used to wear short dresses all the time."

Erin's video titled '4 Things Kate Middleton Has Stopped Wearing Since Becoming a Princess' has racked up millions of views on the app and she goes on to highlight that since taking on the Princess of Wales title in 2022, Catherine "has not been photographed in any dresses or skirts above the knee.

"She wears exclusively midi length," Erin continued.

Along with elegant long dresses, Princess Catherine has noticeably been far more into wide leg trousers in recent years than she ever has been before - a change that seemingly symbolises her step into a more senior position within the royal fold.

Fashion coach and stylist, Miranda Holder, previously told woman&home just how much Kate's change in fashion sense over her the past decade and a half has mirrored the changes in her life and responsibilities.

Miranda told us, "Kate Middleton's style has evolved considerably over the years and continues to do so. When we first met her, first as a fiancee and then newly married to Prince William, her style was very young, fresh, and feminine; floral prints, flirty skirts, and sweet headbands were all fashion staples."

She added, "Gradually, as the Princess grew in stature and confidence, her wardrobe has evolved to match. The sartorial change is in line with her appointment as Princess of Wales, and Kate’s new aesthetic reflects the new authority and seniority of her role.

"It’s as if she means business and wishes to be taken seriously."

Leighton Meester, Gossip Girl

Blair Waldorf ruled the streets of Manhattan throughout the original run of the iconic Gossip Girl, and fans were naturally expecting something memorable when the Queen Bee finally married Chuck Bass in the final.

Exuding style and class, but still with a modern twist, Blair opted for a light blue lace Elie Saab gown from the designer's spring 2012 couture collection.

Gossip Girl’s costume designer Eric Daman told InStyle.com why it was the perfect choice for Blair – and why it could be a great fit for a modern, stylish bride looking for something different – explaining, “It needed to feel like old world glamour meets contemporary high fashion.”

An unconventional romantic-comedy, an unconventional bridal look. In 2012’s The Vow, Rachel McAdams loses her memory and has no recollection of her husband (Channing Tatum).

Claudette Colbert, It Happened One Night

Considered one of Hollywood’s first-ever romantic-comedies, It Happened One Night introduced plenty of the heart-warming tropes audience have come to expect.

The classic movie also gave one of the first enchanting wedding dresses on screen. This bias-cut gown, designed by Robert Kalloch, included a floaty, flower-trimmed silk and was paired with luxe satin gloves and a chic, 1930s headband.

Blake Lively, Gossip Girl

Blake Lively is still a bona fide fashion icon, having some of the most memorable Met Gala moments ever, and she first came to the attention of style-lovers everywhere playing the daring Serena in Gossip Girl.

In Bride Wars, two BFFs end up at war as their weddings land on the same date. Despite being besties, they have completely different wedding styles – and this was represented in the choice of dresses.

Whereas Kate Hudson’s was chic, modern and high fashion, Anne Hathaway’s character, Emma, opts for a subtle, understated Vera Wang off-the-shoulder dress in an off-white satin. The timeless gown was meant to evoke the fact the dress was the character’s mother’s gown first, with an elegant, ruched bodice and mermaid tail.

Kristin Davis, Sex and the City

Sex and the City fans had seen Charlotte walk down the aisle once before – to Trey MacDougal. So the second time she made the plunge – this time to her perfect mate, Harry Goldenblatt – all eyes were on the dress.

Charlotte found her perfect fit in Harry, and in her lace-trimmed, bias-cut Badgley Mischka gown. Charlotte paired the look with a shoulder-length veil and diamond earrings. Classic New York bride. Classic elegance.

Vivien Leigh, Gone with the Wind

Unconventional and unmistakeable, there’s just something so iconic about Shari Headley’s quintessentially-80s wedding dress from Coming to America.

Two things can be true – Mia Thermpolois (Anne Hathway) shouldn’t have had to get married to take the throne of Genovia in The Princess Diaries, but we’re also glad we got to see her walk down the aisle in the most regal bridal look.

With a lacy off-the-shoulder, full sleeves exterior paired with a crisp, simple white dress and long train, Anne/Mia looked every inch the future queen of Genovia.

It’s rare for a wedding dress to not be the most memorable one from a film, but with 13 Going on 30, Jennifer Garner’s Jenna’s most iconic look was the striped Versace mini.

Contrasted with the colourful, out-there looks she wears for most of the film, a grown-up Jenna keeps things refined in a simple, effective A-line Angel Sanchez dress, fingertip-length veil, and a pearl floral Cathy Waterman choker.

Elizabeth Taylor, Father of the Bride

No stranger to being a bride, Elizabeth Taylor starred in the original Father of the Bride back in 1950. As Kay Banks, she walked down the aisle in this mesmerising gown designed by Helen Rose, one of the pre-eminent costume designers at the time.

Despite this red carpet look being nearly over 10 years after Halle Berry’s iconic role as Catwoman, it's clear to see the character's influence is still with her. The sequined catsuit, which she wore at the 2021 People Choice Award, was an undeniable showstopper and was styled with a chic up-do. We particularly like how the zips on both the trouser legs and torso were opened slightly to up the level of sexiness.

Gemma Chan looks like she’s dressed as the midnight sky in this hooded co-ord for The Eternals premiere. With its chunky yet detailed rhinestone covering, there’s not an inch on her that’s not glistening under the red carpet lights. Whilst the dark fabric could run the risk of drowning her, the mesh panel in the skirt and exposed midriff do enough to keep her in control of the look.

Playsuits aren’t usually a garment we see often on the red carpet, especially for movie premieres, but Lauren Ridloff has us wondering why that is. Her playsuit worn for The Eternals premiere is the epitome of an elevated basic with its monochromatic colourway and simple silhouette. Adding the metallic pumps and statement necklace is the necessary finishing touch.

Whilst you may at first glance think this ensemble is rather simple, it’s that simpleness that makes it so effective. There’s nothing we don’t love about this party-ready look on American actress Emily Hampshire. Posing at the Vanity fair after-party, Emily is sporting a glistening metallic suit with shorts and matching glitter tights. Whilst this outfit risks being too sparkly, she’s paired the outwear with a humbling white shirt and black tie.

This outfit is a great example of outfit cohesion. Whilst it’s a rather simple colour palette, the draping corset style top with the fluid metallic white maxi skirt gives the illusion of a flowing one-piece. What we looked for

When drawing up my shortlist of the best wedding guest dresses, I considered several factors. Firstly, you have to remember that weddings can be long days, so the dream scenario is a lightweight dress that will take you from morning to evening, and can cope easily with a change of shoes.

I thought about the different types of weddings - from church to beach, and everything in between. I also considered how well the dresses travelled. The last thing you want is to have to get up at 5am to start steaming your occasionwear!

As I said earlier, midi length dresses are a popular choice, so I focused on below-the-knee and longer. I also considered affordability, as well as how to care for each dress - it's always a plus when you can chuck them in the washing machine after a big day!

Pockets were a plus for me personally, and I also really leaned into prints, as I think people gravitate towards florals and polka dots for joyous celebrations such as weddings.

I also took Megan's advice when it comes to body shape and dress code:

“For plus-size guests, don’t shy away from bold colours or prints because of your size or stature - strategic ruching and waist-cinching details can highlight your best features,” she says.

I definitely prefer styles with longer sleeves, as I like some arm coverage. It's practical too - even if you're attending a summer wedding, the weather in the UK offers no guarantees. Think voluminous balloon sleeves or a flouncy flare to make them the focal point of the look. A longer sleeve can also offer balance a lower neck or hemline, whilst mesh fabric will give gentle coverage, without feeling too heavy.

Summer is the season for weddings, so I took note of the spring/summer 2025 fashion trends and tried butter yellow and bold florals.

“Floaty midi and maxi dresses in chiffon, organza, or linen blends will keep you cool while looking your best. Colour-wise, butter yellow and 24k gold are trending this season, along with soft pastels and romantic floral prints. A strappy heel and delicate gold jewellery will add the perfect finishing touch,” adds Megan.

Ones that just missed the list

I had hoped to find a dress on Amazon for anyone looking for last-minute options, but in the end, I stuck to tried and tested high street brands.

I tried on lots of great dresses from stores like Phase Eight, Hobbs, Reiss and Mint Velvet too, but the nine I narrowed it down to were the ones that really impressed me the most.

I loved this Nobody's Child dress, but it's almost all sold out, and whilst the strapless style of this M&S polka dot dress didn't quite work for me, I do think it could still work well for a wedding guest.
