It's the perfect option for those with a blunt French-style bob, or an outgrown mushroom bob, as it simply requires you to tactically flick out the ends of your hair to sit above, on or just below your shoulders.

The beauty of this look is also that, for many, it's a naturally occurring style. For those with straight or wavy hair, you may find that your bob naturally dries with a slight curve at the ends, or else forms that way when left damp and to sit on your shoulders - or even when tucked behind your ears. You can then either try to conceal the ponytail up and under the rest of your hair, fasten it into a low bun or allow it to lie down your back, like Anderson's. To achieve a similar voluminous bob look, gently loosen the hair around your face from your ponytail - you may need a few well-placed hair pins to add hold. If you have short feathered layers, you can also free these from the hair tie entirely, to let them fall around your face.

How to style a sleek bob

How you style a sleek bob will depend on your hair's natural pattern and thickness, but smooth is the operative word here. Some form of heat protection is a non-negotiable, no matter your hair type. If your hair is at all prone to frizz, ensuring your hair is sufficiently moisturised is crucial, while applying one of the best hair products for humidity is also a good idea. This will help to ensure your hair retains the smooth finish. Those with a lot of hair may find it easy to do so in two or more sections. Smith refers to this trend as being similar to the “Bell-Bottom Bob”, a nod to the classic jeans shape and because the silhouette also resembles a bell, particularly when it’s styled smooth with flicked-out ends.

“It has all the life and movement of a longer layered haircut but shrunken into a bob shape,” he explains. “Face framing all around the perimeter of the face, it looks great when styled with a wave.” 

Who does the cowgirl bob suit?

Most bobs can be customised to suit any face shape, should you want to soften a more angular jawline or have it cut extra blunt to offset a rounder shape. “[This bob is] a great option for those who like the idea of a mid-length bob haircut but who want the softness and movement of longer hair,” Smith confirms.

“It works great on straight, wavy and slightly curly hair,” he continues, noting that it’s worth keeping in mind that, if you want to style your hair naturally, “Very curly or textured hair [may] find the shape looks a little on the squarer side.” Your hairdresser will be able to chat through adapting the style to suit your face shape, hair texture and the amount of time you can commit to daily styling before you go for the chop, however. 

How to style the cowgirl bob

This will depend on how you’d like it to look in line with your hair’s natural texture and thickness. If you want to wear it with a smooth, rounded finish or with an undone wave, naturally curly and coily hair will require more styling to achieve this, for example.

"Texture sprays and styling powders, such as Evo Haze, give lightweight lift and movement to the style," says Smith. "Using a large curling iron to twist random sections, or a straightening iron used to bend the hair in the desired direction, can be combined with a heat protector spray for long lasting results."

Smith recommends prepping straight and/or finer and flatter hair types with a volumising product, before drying. For thicker and curlier types, he advises smoothing out with a round brush and a product that'll help reduce and prevent frizz. You can then add an undone wave using a wand or tong afterwards. What is the Hollywood bob?

There are countless iterations of the bob, from the boxy boyfriend bob to the low-maintenance maxi bob and complicated-sounding inverted teacup bob. The Hollywood bob is more about styling than the cut itself, although some well-placed layers will prove a real asset. Big, bouncy, with a wave through the ends and a statement side-parting are the major hallmarks of the Hollywood bob. 

"It's all about getting that root lift in, and then a slightly undone and dishevelled finish; having that looseness of an old school set," explains Adam Reed, international hairdresser and Founder of ARKIVE Headcare and ARKIVE by Adam Reed. "What we're seeing now is a much more modernised version. Think Dolce & Gabbana in the 1990s, early 2000s and you're on the right track!"

Who does the Hollywood bob suit?

What hair types does it suit: "It can suit pretty much any head of hair because it's more about the styling rather than the cut itself," explains Reed. "You can put in as much or as little volume as you like, and similarly as much width or as little as you like." It's a style that works with any hair type, says Reed, as long as you put the prep in first. "It's about smoothing hair out, before putting in volume with quite a defined curl and then brushing that curl out to create an airy, cloudy like feel to the hair."

"Most hair types can take it except curly hair; that would need to be straightened a bit,” agrees hairdresser Michael Douglas. "If you feel worried about getting a bob, then just leave it slightly longer than chin-length, as it’s more forgiving."

How to tailor it for your hair type: If you've always found it difficult to find the perfect hairstyle for your face shape, a bob hairstyle could be the perfect cut. Rather than a one-bob-fits-all approach, a good stylist will tailor the length and shape to the individual. "A well-cut bob can be very flattering, with face-framing layers to suit the face shape and hide jowls, whilst opting for a shorter bob can elongate the neck," says Grundy.

With lift at the root and volume through the lengths, the bouncy bob can be great for those lacking fullness. "Shorter cuts, soft layers and added bounce will create plenty of volume in fine hair," says Grundy. "Those with very thick or textured hair on the other hand might find this look more of a challenge, and will require a good cut with layering to help take some of the weight out of the hair."

How to keep it modern: The essence of the Hollywood bob is polished and elegant, but how do you stop it from veering into old-fashioned 'wash and set' territory? "To bring your bob up-to-date, layers are key," admits Grundy. "These could be long and face-framing like the butterfly cut or short and choppy like the shag or wolf-cut."

How to style the Hollywood bob?

"Big, bouncy volume is all about the blow-dry," says Grundy, and there are lots of ways you can achieve this voluptuous blow-out... 

Dampen the hair and use a styling mist: "If the hair is already dry then I use a water spray to dampen it first." Next, Grundy recommends prepping hair with mousse. "I then section the hair and lightly mist with styling spray, before blow-drying each section, lifting at the roots as I go," he continues. Once you're happy, set the look with hairspray.

Use a volumising spray and blowdry upside down: If you’ve never been able to master a bouncy blow-dry at home, try Douglas’s technique. "Apply a volumising spray on damp hair, then blow-dry hair upside down to get lots of root lift. Once dry, use a large barrel tong to add in some loose waves, wrapping the hair back away from the face. Make a deep side parting and possibly tuck one side behind the ear."  

Try heated rollers: Adam Reed uses the heated roller method. "Prime hair with mousse, and then add a little bit of blow-dry spray to boost that root area. I recommend using heated rollers: put them in hot, wind them on to the root so that they're sitting on the root, which is what gives you the volume. Spray the root before you wind it down, and then when you brush it out you get that incredible bounce to the hair. To finish, shake it all out using a bit of hairspray and a dry volumising spray to set that gorgeous volume."

Don't overload the hair: Douglas also has some pearls of wisdom to keep the bouncy bob from looking too 'done.' "Old-fashioned hairstyles were always very neat and precise, so try and keep the styling loose and even a little messy to ensure your hair looks modern." Products play a part here too, according to Grundy. "Don’t overload products. Yes, you want to hold your look in place but you also want some natural movement. I will always hold hairspray 40-50cm away from the head so that it becomes a fine mist. People tend to spray too close to the hair and it becomes too concentrated and overloaded."

Over the years the Duchess of Edinburgh’s hair has perhaps changed the most compared to her fellow royals and we’re particularly in love with her short hair eras - the 1990s and 2000s. During this time short bob hairstyles were part of the senior royal’s signature look and though she often wore her hair sleek or with a blow-dry bounce to it, it wasn’t always the case. In February Queen Letizia became the latest high-profile figure to embrace one of the short hairstyles for women that are so popular right now and her latest spring look showed off her glossy new bob at its best. The Queen of Spain is a fan of tailoring and she opted for a pair of stunning white flared trousers as she attended the Discapnet Awards for Accessible Technologies on 21st March. Styled with a green top, the combination of Queen Letizia's bob haircut and trousers created a professional yet fashion-forward look.

The trousers had a mid-rise fit which caught our eye as Her Majesty tends to stick to more high-waisted items. This styling choice was a different one for her and gave the trousers a more relaxed feel to them. Whilst the Princess of Wales is known for her long, glossy brunette waves her mother Carole has been a fan of bob hairstyles for decades. Although she’s often experimented with her side parted bobs, adding texture with layers or incorporating more of a side fringe, Carole’s signature style has always been a collar-length haircut. You can craft a half-up, half-down look with just a hair band though pins can also help to do so a little more seamlessly and you might prefer just to pin the sections together loose at the back rather than in a bun.

Carole’s hairstyle was a wonderful choice for the Royal Variety Performance and it looked especially lovely with her dress. The Princess of Wales’s mum opted for a black midi dress with sheer lace sleeves and matching lace across the top of the bodice in a scoop neck style. In a practical move on this cold November night, Carole also appeared to carry an extra layer draped over her arm.

Speaking previously to woman&home online, session stylist and BaByliss Pro Ambassador Syd Hayes explained that bobs are “great for accentuating” bone structure “thanks to the lack of graduation and layers throughout”. He also believes that side partings are “more flattering” and very versatile compared to a centre parting.

“I feel side parts are so much more flattering than centre partings,” he shared, “[P]arting choice is very personal to the individual and where they like their hair to fall. However, generally most face shapes can suit side partings”.

Carole Middleton’s voluminous bob was fabulously flattering at Wimbledon and her glossy tresses rested on top of the collar of her stunning shirt dress. The mottled green and white pattern added another level of detail that contrasted with her smooth hairstyle.

The dress had three quarter length sleeves that were perfect for this sunny summer day and a classic collar. The fitted bodice flowed into a pleated midi length skirt and Carole had a few buttons undone, giving the final outfit more of a relaxed feel to it that offset the formal silhouette. 

She carried a pistachio green top-handle bag and wore statement wedge sandals with a pop of vibrant yellow. Although the Princess of Wales’s mother has been to Wimbledon numerous times over the years, the combination of her bob and green dress remains one of our favourite looks from her.

The last time Carole was photographed attending a public event was when she stepped out with her husband Michael for Kate’s Christmas carol concert in December 2023. On this occasion her hair was a darker shade of brown and Carole went for a very sleek bob look that couldn’t be more different to her voluminous style in 2015. A hair expert chatted to woman&home about just how versatile and easy a blunt bob is, especially for those looking for something requiring minimal effort.

Blunt bobs have always been a timeless staple because they're so low maintenance," hair expert Emma Vickery told us. "The cut should sit in such a way that styling it should be very minimal."

Emma added that it's also fantastic if you are the sort of person who has finer hair. "It will help thinner hair look and feel much thicker, making it one of the best hairstyles for fine hair," she said.

"It will depend on hair type and texture, but generally it’s a great way of losing a lot of length to aid healthy hair. Plus, because all of the hair is kept the same length, it's easier to style as the weight is kept at the bottom of the haircut so less likely to look frizzy or unkempt."

Queen Letizia is known for having longer locks that she wears either down or in fashionable ponytails or clipped-up styles. It will be interesting to see how she decides to style her new shorter locks in the coming months as the weather gets a little warmer.

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh once wore a gorgeous pistachio green 90s mini dress that couldn’t have looked more fun yet elegant with her ultra short bob at a polo match. 

The Duchess of Edinburgh has never been afraid to push her royal fashion boundaries over the years with everything from her statement wide-brimmed Philip Treacy hat on Easter Sunday 2023 to her love of wearing bold red nail polish. In the 1990s, the mini dress was one of Duchess Sophie’s go-tos and this was a time where she fully embraced several different short bob hairstyles too.

Nowadays the senior royal tends to favour elegant midi-length skirts and dresses, but back before she and Prince Edward got married she went to watch the polo wearing a beautiful green mini dress.

She came prepared for the hot weather with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses that she wore on her head for an ultra-relaxed look. The glasses swept her ultra short bob back away from her face, with just her swishy side fringe kept loose. Chin-length with shorter layers cut in, Duchess Sophie’s choppy micro-bob was a look she loved at this time, although she’s now known for her longer, paler blonde tresses.

She finished off her summer look with a pair of chocolate brown loafers and statement stud earrings as she watched the polo. The outing took place three years before she and Prince Edward got married at St George’s Chapel in June 1999. The Duchess had a similar haircut at the time of their wedding, though her hair was slightly blonder with more pronounced side fringe pieces. 

Over the top she wore a full length veil which, as per the Royal Family website, was made from hand-dyed silk tulle and finished by hand with spotted crystal details.

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s jacket had a boxy cut, tortoiseshell buttons and a double breasted design, giving a real power dressing feel to the look. 

As she was photographed on her way to work before she became a senior royal, it’s hardly surprising that she opted for a more formal style of jacket. However, this would look just as beautiful worn more casually with jeans, or with suit trousers for a bold evening outfit.

It's no secret that bob hairstyles are in high demand right now, with the timeless cut seemingly getting a fresh iteration every week - from the "Scandi" bob to the "Mushroom" bob trend - and now it appears, there's a new, statement way to style your bob emerging amongst the 2024 hair trends. 

The wet-look bob, or the "Hydro" bob - as it's been coined by Hairstylist and trend forecaster, Tom Smith - is garnering a lot of attention on and off the red carpet. And before you completely write this bold look off as impractical (unless you're heading to a star-studded fashion event or the like) there are a few pros to consider - and not just that it can look very chic when paired with a micro bob.

What is a "Hydro" bob?

The Hydro bob, or wet-look bob, hairstyle is really as it sounds, a short, blunt or layered crop that is styled in such a way as to look wet - as if you've just stepped out of the shower (or ocean, if you're feeling dramatic).

And while we know the idea might seem a tad daunting for an event or occasion that doesn't involve a red carpet and lots of flashing lights, there are a few benefits to the wet-look bob...

First of all, it looks very sophisticated as proven by the likes of Jennifer Lopez at the Schiaparelli Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2024 show and Charlize Theron - who has modelled several slick bobs over the year. 

The second and perhaps most compelling pro is that by creating a "wet" effect, you can easily resurrect a bad hair day. Whether you're tangling with 3-day-old hair or frizz that won't flatten, you can make your locks look high-fashion and editorial in seconds. Plus, you can use it as an opportunity to repair and supercharge your hair with hydration, by dousing it in your go-to oils and best hair masks, to create that signature wet finish.

As Tom Smith explains: "A great trick for those who don’t find the time to do weekly masks or treatments is to simply style the hair with your favourite moisture mask. This will give the semi-wet-look effect and allow your hair to soak in goodness at the same time."

How to style a wet-look bob

So, how do we style this sleek bob? For a more subtle and strand-loving option, Smith says: "A liberal layer of Olaplex no.6 is a great choice for the nourished, slightly more wearable wet look," before adding, "If you want a statement wet look a flexible gel or wax spray would be a good option."

Celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of The Hair Consult, Edward James explains that prep, "is key as it makes sure the hair is hydrated from the start and doesn’t start to go dry and fluffy," and says to, "start by washing your hair with an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, my go-to is Aveda’s Smooth Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner which contain Aloe Vera and Maize to fight frizz, smooth the hair, and create a great foundation for styling."

Then comes the styling: "For the wet look, I love to use a combination of Color Wow Pop and Lock Crystallite Shellac and Color Wow One Minute Transformation Styling Cream. Pop and Lock Crystallite Shellac coats the hair strands with a crystalline shell, enhancing shine and giving a wet look that lasts.  

"Color Wow’s One Minute Transformation Styling Cream provides moisture to dry hair and controls frizz without weighing the hair down and also provides some gentle hold, which is great for a sleeker look or if your hair has natural texture and tends to go puffy as it dries."  James has also shared three, easy-to-follow steps to achieve the perfect Hydro bob with the aforementioned products...

1. Start with a small amount of One Minute Transformation Styling Cream, spreading it evenly through the hair and focusing on the ends and any particularly frizzy areas around the hairline or nape of the neck.
2. Use the Color Wow Pop and Lock Crystallite Shellac. Apply this from mid-lengths to the ends to lock in shine and maintain the wet look effect.
3. Comb through gently. Use either a wide tooth comb or my favourite, an Aveda paddle brush to distribute the product evenly through your hair, ensuring every strand is coated.

When to wear a wet-look bob

Smith says that this look is actually more versatile than you might think - especially if you're opting for a more subtle wet look, with the help of nourishing masks and hair serums. "The softly defined version of this look can be worn for any occasion - you can even use a moisture mask after the gym and make it a ‘look.’

"Keep the more exaggerated wet look for events and evening socialising where the stronger look will fit better."

James recommends this style for a sophisticated day-to-night look, a clean and summery holiday 'do (as it requires minimal effort) and as a "conditioning bonus" - because you can incorporate your favourite masks and serums.

"The hydro-bob adds a touch of edge and glamour at the same time and can transform your look quickly to have a more dramatic feel," says James, "It exudes confidence and draws more attention to the face and any detailing such as statement jewellery or bold clothing choices which take centre stage."

Best lengths and styles for a "Hydro" bob

If you're wondering what style to opt for, Smith explains that the "Hydro" bob is, "better on structured cuts to ensure it looks intentional rather than simply not blow-dried," like a blunt '90s bob.

Smith adds that "short and mid-length cuts that boast bold and strong lines with minimal layers are best."

James also agrees that shorter bobs, "or those with minimal layering are ideal for the wet look. These styles can maintain the moisture and product application evenly, ensuring a consistent appearance." 

If you do want to try this look on a longer bob style though, James says to: "focus more product on the mid-lengths to ends. Oversaturation in these areas can prevent the hairstyle from appearing dry, especially towards the ends. I also recommend bringing some extra product if you have a long evening ahead so you can top up the ends of the hair if they start to dry out."

1. The slicked-back bob

For a more subtle and wearable take on the Hydro bob, you can simply smooth your hair back - like Charlize Theron's here - and fix it behind your ears, for a sleek and quite retro look. This is a less wet, more polished hairstyle that will work well for a date night or evening event - when you want a stylish change for your everyday bob.

It can also be easily adapted for medium to long hair lengths for a similarly sleek finish, with the help of your best hair straighteners.

2. Curly wet look bob

If you have a curly or coily hair type, Rihanna's jaw-length bob offers the perfect inspiration. Here we can see that the wet effect has made her curls look beautifully defined and glossy - without a flyaway in sight. This style is ideal if you're struggling with frizz, or want to opt for more of a sleek finish, without resorting to heat styling.

3. The "Hydro" lob

For a statement look, we love Kat Graham's "undone" wet bob. Here we can see that the front of her hair has been slicked up and back, with the sides tucked behind her ears to give the style and effortless and bold feel. Gillian Anderson's transformation into Emily Maitlis for Scoop has shocked and delighted fans who can't believe how much the star has changed in look for the role.

A trailer has just been released for Netflix's latest drama Scoop which looks at Newsnight's infamous interview between Prince Andrew and BBC journalist Emily Maitlis. Fans have been amazed by Billie Piper's portrayal of Sam McAlister and even more so by Gillian Anderson's ultra-short bob as she transformed into Emily Maitlis..

"Gillian with brown eyes, omg," said one commenter. "How good does Gillian look as Emily Maitlis!?" said another.

A third commented, "Anything with Gillian and Keeley in I have to watch. This looks amazing and credit to the makeup and hair department as well!"

Emily Maitlis had a blonde French bob look at the time of the interview which was the inspiration for Gillian's look. Although the interview took place several years ago, Emily's hairstyle is completely on trend as a look today and this blonde side-parted bob is one of the top 2024 hair trends.

The journalist also has brown eyes which is why Gillian wore brown contact lenses for this character look, along with dark eye makeup. 

The costume department also nailed some of the iconic looks that we've seen Emily Maitlis in over the years. This included the grey buttoned blazer and black trouser combo that she wore in the Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew. This teamed with her hair and makeup look really brought the character to life, and has been complimented by the real people involved in this interview. 

Speaking to the Telegraph, Sam McAlister, the producer of Newsnight at the time complimented Gillian's transformation in the film, calling it 'astonishing'.

"It felt like being there with Emily," Sam said. "Everything about her physicality and her performance is on the money. They have a similar intellect as well. Emily is very methodical. She worked very hard on every interview; she trains, she studies. And my impression of Gillian was exactly the same. She was studying the material, she was studying Emily, and she was working on that project in an intellectual way as well as a dramatic way."

Alongside Gillian Anderson, the show also stars; Keeley Hawes, Billie Piper, and Rufus Sewell who all play the real-life people involved in the infamous Newsnight interview that caused chaos for the Royal Family. 

The movie is based on the book of the same name by Sam McAlister which details all the behind-the-scenes details about the preparation and conversations that went into securing such a high-profile interview with a member of the royal family at Buckingham Palace about such a prolific sexual abuse scandal.

Hairstylists are getting seriously creative with this classic style, thinking up more cut and styling options than ever before – complete with some catchy (and some quite out there) names. There’s the maxi bob, the bubble bob, even the inverted teacup bob, and that’s just for starters. The key to keeping your bob current? Opting for a short bob hairstyle, which we’d categorise as any bob that’s above shoulder length, but ideally jaw-length or shorter. 

“The short bob never really goes out of fashion,” says pro hairdresser and founder of MD London, Michael Douglas. “It’s always around, it’s just waiting to land on someone popular and be brought back into the mainstream. The great thing about a bob is that it generally suits most people, and it’s universally understood what it is when someone asks for one. It’s also a way of having short hair that’s not masculine – it can still look very feminine.” If you’re considering going for the chop in 2024, these are the short bob hairstyles to know about…

Rather than heading into the salon with a generic idea of what you want and ending up with post-appointment regret, use this round-up to swot up on the trends of the moment before you go…

1. The micro bob

First stop, the micro bob, which, as you might have guessed by the name, is probably the shortest of all the short bob hairstyles on our list. So, what exactly is it? “A micro bob is an ultra-short form of the classic bob style haircut,” explains Alicia Dobson, celebrity stylist and Bellissima Italia ambassador. “This chic haircut sits between the cheekbone and the chin and can be one of the best hairstyles to accentuate your bone structure.” If you already have a strong jaw or defined cheekbones or want to make either of these appear sharper than they are in reality, then this is the style for you. 

Owing to the super short length, the micro bob is best suited to anyone with naturally straight or wavy hair that doesn’t require a lot of heat styling. Frazzled split ends show up very quickly on hair this short, so you want to keep tools to a minimum and wash and go where possible. 

2. The short blunt bob or box bob

Confusingly, there are a couple of bob terms that refer to the same hairstyle, meaning it’s harder than ever for your hairdresser to know what you mean unless you’re super clear. Taking pictures always helps, as sometimes words can be misconstrued. A perfect example of this is “the box bob or blunt bob, which are the same really,” advises Douglas. 

“I think this style is going to be really popular. Remember the secretary in Love Actually, the one who has a fling with Alan Rickman’s character? She has the perfect example of a short box bob that I think we will see a lot of in 2024,” adds Douglas. If you don’t get the festive reference and need a little refresher, it’s a very simple bob that’s cut with blunt, boxy ends that are all one length. You can wear it with a middle parting, add interest with some slightly shorter pieces at the front, or follow in Alan Rickman’s love interest’s footsteps with a full fringe. 

3. The short mushroom bob

We know the name isn’t entirely appealing, but hear us out. A mushroom bob is less about the specific cut of your short bob hairstyle and more about the way it’s styled. “I predict that the mushroom bob will be a big trend for 2024,” says Dobson. “It’s a rounded style bob and usually the same length all the way around, which makes it look just like the top of a mushroom. It’s low-maintenance, easy-to-style and helps you look glam and put together with minimal effort.”

The secret to creating that rounded finish is to make sure you’re lifting your hair at the roots when styling, creating a curved shape through the lengths and tucking under the ends. The more natural volume you have in your hair, the easier this will be to achieve. 

4. The short bob with an even shorter fringe

This short bob hairstyle is pretty self-explanatory and refers to a short bob with a micro fringe. Longer fringe styles like curtain bangs don’t work very well with cropped cuts, as they can merge together and confuse the overall shape of your style. But by opting for a very short fringe, there’s no overlap. For maximum impact, aim for there to be a noticeable gap between the ends of your fringe and your brows. 

It’s not a cut that’s going to appeal to or suit everyone, and we’d recommend chatting to your hairdresser first about whether it’s the right hairstyle for your face shape. Generally speaking, it will be best suited to oval face shapes, who can get away with pretty much anything, or rounded face shapes to help soften the edges and give them a more structured, angular appearance. 

5. Le petit bob

Our obsession with French beauty is showing no signs of waning, with the French bob trend spawning a shorter, chicer sister for 2024. The French bob is characterised as a chin-length bob complete with a brow-skimming fringe. It’s quite heavy and normally worn with a relaxed, textured wave. Le petit bob builds on this, but is far shorter – cut closer to the cheekbone than the jaw. To get this length, the hair needs to be graduated slightly, making it longer around the nape of the neck and shorter at the front. 

There’s nowhere to hide with a style this short, so we’d only recommend going for this cut if you have naturally very straight hair that barely requires any styling. If you’ve got a short hairstyle, like a pixie cut, that you’re growing out then this is a good shape to opt for to help you avoid that awkward, in-between length when it’s not quite a crop, not quite a bob and still far too short to tie up. 

6. The short maxi bob

How can a bob be short and maxi all at once you ask? Well, the short part refers to the length, while the maxi bit refers to the layers and how you style it. “I think voluminous bobs are going to be big in 2024,” says Jess Elbaum, celebrity hairstylist working in association with HASK. “We saw more and more big curls and blow dries on towards the back of 2024 and this is definitely continuing into the new year.” A maxi bob has more interest and movement than a one-length bob, with layers cut in to frame your face and create the illusion of thickness. 

As oomph is the aim of the game, the maxi bob is best suited to curly or coily hair that naturally boasts volume and bounce. You can ramp this up at every stage of the washing and styling process too, by shampooing upside down and diffusing your hair with the nozzle pointing upwards to encourage spring in your spirals. A short maxi bob isn’t completely off the cards if you have straight hair, but you’ll need to lean heavily on products like mousse and your best sea salt spray to stop it falling flat by lunch. 

We all know that there's a bob to suit everyone. But for short hair colours who want an even bigger chop, the micro bob is the way to go this season.

If you’ve currently got a long hairstyle or medium haircut then you probably want to avoid post-appointment regret by dipping your toe into the wonderful world of bobs with a shoulder-length long bob first rather than throwing yourself in knee-deep with a shorter style. But, if you’re committed to the idea of a big change, then the micro bob is one of the 2024 hair trends to try. 

The important thing to keep in mind though is that not all hairdressers will know exactly what you mean when you say ‘micro bob’. “It’s really just another way of saying short bob,” explains pro hairdresser and founder of MD London, Michael Douglas. “I would be cautious using these trend terms when going into the hairdressers, and suggest taking pictures instead. It’s been a popular choice with celebrities in recent months, with fans including, “Lily Allen, who’s no stranger to experimenting with her look,” continues Dobson. “Carey Mulligan’s 1950s-inspired bob from the 2024 Golden Globes is also a great example of the micro bob.”

Who does a micro bob suit?

A micro bob can suit anyone, it’s just about having the confidence to pull it off. “The shorter your hair, the more you’re relying on your face to represent you,” explains Douglas. “This really doesn’t have anything to do with age or face shape, but more to do with how you feel about the way your face looks. A lot of shorter styles featured in magazines are usually on models with big eyes, a small nose and big lips, but that doesn’t mean to say that you need these features for this style to look good.”

Hair type is an important factor too, as shorter hair is typically trickier to style with tools than longer lengths. “A micro bob can be seen as a high-maintenance choice, but it’s pretty low maintenance if you have a hair type that doesn’t have a huge amount of natural texture to it,” advises Dobson. “If your hair is fairly straight then I’d recommend a sleek micro-bob. Those who have curly hair, however, may find the micro bob harder to style. For those I'd suggest a longer bob instead, as layers will enhance your curls and create a more defined shape.” The volume-packed maxi bob and chopped bob are both good alternatives to the micro for coily and curly hair. 

How to style a micro bob

As we’ve already alluded to, the shorter length means there’s not a huge amount you can do when it comes to styling a micro bob. “Blow drying the hair without a nozzle and using a vented brush will encourage natural movement in the hair but you’re still controlling it slightly,” says Douglas.

There are two key reasons why people go for a statement cut like a micro bob – either because they’re ready for a big change, or because their hand has been forced by extreme damage due to excessive styling or intense colouring. If your move to the micro bob is being fuelled by the latter then you’ll want to be careful to maintain the health of your hair and not to fall back into old habits. If you are using heat, try and keep the temperature of your tools as low as possible and don’t forget to prep with one of the best heat protection sprays first.

“The Scandi bob is cut just below the jawline and is a great length for those who want a statement bob but with a little extra length,” explains Alicia Dobson, celebrity stylist and Bellissima Italia ambassador. Instead of being all one length, it’s “slightly shorter at the front section, but very even through the sides and back,” adds pro hairdresser and founder of MD London, Michael Douglas. 

Although the cut is key, the styling of this specific bob shape is important too. “The flipped parting is key to nailing this look and giving a modern finish to the style,” says Dobson. “It also adds a more relaxed finish, so involves less styling – perfect for when you’re short on time.” 

Who does a Scandi bob suit?

• Lighter hair colours

While the cut can work on all hair colours, to be officially a 'Scandi' bob, it works best to cut into lighter hair colours. “I think that a Scandi bob should be blonde, representing the most common Scandinavian hair colour,” says Douglas.

“It’s best suited to people with warm skin tones and pale natural hair colours. Highlights and hair that’s blonde all over are both a great help when creating this look – I think the Scandi feel disappears when the hair becomes too brunette. Ideally, it should be medium blonde or lighter on a colour scale.” 

• Narrower face shapes

It’s also important to choose the right hairstyle for your face shape, as, unfortunately, a Scandi bob won’t suit all features. “The Scandi bob can be particularly flattering for those with narrow faces, as it helps create the illusion of width and frames the face beautifully,” advises Dobson.

“Those with longer face shapes may find the Scandi bob to be less of a perfect fit, as any style that sits a couple of inches longer than the jawline can make the face appear longer.”

• Fine/straight hair types

The final thing to consider is your hair type. One of the main pros of the Scandi bob is that it’s meant to be a low-maintenance kind of style, and you’re not going to be able to achieve that if your hair is very curly or requires a lot of styling to minimise frizz. It’ll work best for those with hair that’s naturally quite fine and straight.

“In this hair type the flipped-over parting helps to create the illusion of volume, so can help those who have flatter hair but fancy some extra volume,” adds Dobson. Remember too that the Scandi bob “needs to be cut regularly to keep it in tip-top shape.” If you’re more of a heads-to-the-salon-every-once-in-a-blue-moon person than an appointment-every-eight-weeks person, then it’s probably not for you. 

How to style a Scandi bob

As we’ve already chatted about, the beauty of a Scandi bob is that it shouldn’t require a huge amount of styling to achieve. You’re aiming for effortless but still polished though, so we would still recommend picking up tools rather than washing and going.

• Blow dry—“Start with a blow-dry spray that contains heat protection,” advises Douglas. “You want one that has a small amount of hold but still allows the hair to move after styling. One of the features of the Scandi bob is that it moves freely and isn’t stiff or sticky.”
• Create volume—“To add volume and body from root to end I would suggest using a heated brush,” explains Dobson. “Hold the hair up when drying and use a motion of up, over and down to provide lift.
• Add body—To complete the look when drying the flipped-over section, use your tool to direct the hair to the opposite side to create a natural ‘swoosh’. Throughout the day you can alternate your parting if you wish by simply running your fingers through it and flipping it to the other side for added volume.”

Now, we would like to preface this by saying that bobs, no matter the length or colour you opt for, never really go out of style - as, often, the differences between bob trends are quite finite. That being said, because of the upkeep that's often required for keeping your short cut fresh, knowing which variations are declining can help to inform your styling and pose as great inspiration for your next trip to the hairdresser...

So, without further ado, let's dive into what bob variations are already behind phased out - plus our styling staples...

Our go-to bob styling essentials

1. Choppy, layered bobs

2024 will see obvious, choppy layers evolve into more subtle face-framing textures, paired with blunter, more squared bob shapes. As Becky Lennon, extension and keratin specialist at Nicola Clarke at John Freida Salons explains that we'll be, "moving away from harsh, and heavy obvious layered bobs," adding: "sharper square bobs are in with a soft textured outline, so you get gorgeous movement."

And if you're a lover of feathered bangs, Lennon notes that - especially with this soft but squared look - "having a textured fringe with a Bob is a great look too, it’s all about getting the Bob right for that person."

2. High-maintenance "Shag" bobs

While longer "Shag" cuts are still set to trend this year, the recent demand for sleek and one-length '90s-style bobs will mean we see fewer layered styles.

Live True London's expert stylist, Tyler Moore says: "a lot of bobs are timeless, but we expect to see less of shaggy and ultra-layered bobs this year, with clients favouring blunter styles. These are easy to maintain and style, looking good with little effort."

While 2022 was all about the so-called "effortless" French bob, which unlike the name suggests, does involve effort to maintain that jawline-length and soft tousled waves, the blunt bob will mostly require your best hair straighteners - and of course, a good heat protectant spray.

3. Ultra-short bobs

Super short, statement bobs are also being phased out, in favour of more versatile "Lob" cuts.

"We are already seeing a decline in ultra-short bobs, with clients preferring to opt for either a chin-length chop or a collarbone skimming style," says Moore.

4. Middle-parted bobs

Okay no, bobs with middle partings aren't really "outdated" or going out of style - as that's essentially the '90s Posh Spice bob - but they are now sharing the spotlight with side partings.

In fact, Tom Smith, hairstylist at Billi Curie and Trend Forecaster has predicted that we'll see a push towards deep side partings, especially for "short cuts, bobs, longer styles and even fringes too."

A side-swept parting offers a dramatic feel to your look and is an easy way to change up your hairstyle - without traipsing to the hairdresser. If you opt for a blunt bob, you can easily flit between a middle and side parting, no matter your hair type.

5. Bobs that don't match your face shape

While it can be very tempting to simply opt for a cut that is trending, we're dubbing 2024 as the year of face-flattering 'dos and as Lennon reminds us, bobs especially, require some tailoring.

"I would always suggest having a consultation with a stylist to talk through the needs of face shape, hair texture neck length to optimise the look, it’s a power haircut but definitely needs detailing differently for each client."

Styling-wise, Victoria herself, would either opt for a straight and sleek look or choose to curl the ends of her hair inwards, creating something of a "mushroom" bob-esque shape (which is also on-trend right now). She would then pair her blunt bob with a LBD and her equally signature smokey eye, making up the Posh Spice aesthetic that we know and love today. This sort of timeless style is very much back and naturally so is the sharp haircut that capped off her look.

How to achieve the '90s bob

The look itself is definitely a statement, but also surprisingly low-maintenance (though frequent trims may be required to keep the clean, blunt shape) and easy to style - the key lies in the prep...

Prepping the hair:

• Oval: "This cut is a winner here and I love the way that the chin-length style balances the proportions of an oval face beautifully."

Available from Chanel, the Le Rouge Satin Lipstick has a long-wearing and luminous satin finish.

Angela also used the Chanel Le Crayon Lèvres Longwear Lip Pencil in the now-sold-out shade Nude Brun on Jennifer alongside the lipstick. She put some foundation over and added a light layer of translucent powder and then applied the pencil to shape her lips and then another light layer of powder and the pencil again. 

This high-priced lipstick is particularly luxurious and the lip pencil shade is currently sold-out but there are so many products, including the iconic Pillow Talk lipstick and lipliner from Charlotte Tilbury, that are a little more affordable but still a similarly stunning shade. 

Jennifer’s final make-up look with her pink-nude lipstick was beautifully glowy and looked gorgeous with her long bob contrasted against her black gown.

Bob hairstyles have to be among the most enduring looks out there, so whenever a new one comes onto the scene, we're immediately all ears. Although the aptly named mushroom bob may not have the most sophisticated ring to it, you'll be surprised by how versatile and refined the style actually is. 

"It’s always great to try out new trends in the new year and this one is no different," says Tyler Moore, Expert Hairstylist at Live True London. "It’s sleek and chic, but easy to achieve." Look no further for the timelessly elegant chop that can work for all hair types this season.  

What is the mushroom bob?

"The mushroom bob is a rounded-style bob, usually with the same length all the way around the head which looks just like the top of a mushroom," explains Alicia Dobson, celebrity hair stylist and Bellissima Ambassador. Although looking like the top of a mushroom may conjure up images of Willy Wonka, we can assure you that this bob has a much more elegant feel. In fact, many of the best celebrity bobs fall under the mushroom umbrella.

The look is characterised by "a blunt, above the shoulders bob cut that is styled to flip inward, creating a bowl-like effect," explains Moore. So rather than framing it as a button mushroom top, imagine an Anna Wintour-style trim with extra volume. "It doesn’t have a particular length, ranging from check bone height to skimming the shoulder, but the key feature is a smooth, bouncy style that flips inwards at the ends," says Moore. 

What's the best way to achieve the mushroom bob?

As with all short hairstyles, the key to success lies in the perfect cut and optimum styling. "Ask your stylist for a blunt bob cut at your desired length. If you’re not sure, get an extra inch as your hair will look shorter once styled to flick inwards," says Moore. This is key if you're going for a bob for the first time, as you don't want to go too cropped when you're still getting used to the style.

If you already have a standard bob haircut, however, you probably won't need to go anywhere near the scissors. "This look comes mostly from styling, so to achieve it on a daily basis will require daily styling," says Moore, so be prepared to take some time in the morning to get the perfect mushroom-inspired shape.

"When styling, apply some mousse to towel-dried hair at the roots for extra body, then rough dry until 70% dry," says Moore. "Then, using a round brush, blow dry hair in sections, flipping in at the ends. You can also lift the section and concentrate a burst of heat to the root for extra volume. Finish with a styling spray for added shine, hold and to tame frizz." Don't forget the best heat protection sprays to protect against damage when using heat frequently.

Who will the mushroom bob work best for?

One of the best things about the mushroom bob is its endless versatility. Unlike the chopped bob or box bob that have a more specific cut that can only be styled one way, this chop could easily be straightened, curled, waved, braided, or blow-dried to achieve a different look each time. However, there are certain people and hair types it will work best for.

"The mushroom bob works really well on those with straight hair, as it’s harder to create the rounded dome shape with curly hairstyles," notes Dobson. Moore agrees that "it can be adapted for most types of hair, but straight hair will work best to create the mushroom bowl shape. It is unlikely to work on natural curls unless they are relaxed using a keratin treatment."

Keep it natural to capture the slob haircut, or add some curls for party season.

"The mushroom bob trend is a great one to try ahead of the new year as it’s a low-maintenance, easy-to-style bob which helps you to look glam and put-together with minimal effort," says Dobson. "Bobs are back in fashion, and I can see why. What better way to start the new year than to refresh your look with a clean-cut bob?!"
