Earlier this year I did something I never thought I would do – I wrote a rave review about the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. As someone who loves the tactile experience only a book can provide, a digital counterpart was something I had deliberately steered clear of.

But, try as I might to not enjoy using my Kindle, it didn't take much use to convince me its one of the best investments I've ever made. So I was excited to hear Amazon was releasing a new Paperwhite Kindle model, but wondered what it could possibly add to make it better? I mean, when it comes to e-readers, there's surely only so much one can do?

The answer, in short, is it's a little bit faster (25% Amazon claims), a little bit bigger, and the chassis now comes in two new colours. There's no denying it looks great in colour, and it's currently at its lowest price ever in the Amazon Black Friday sale. But are these features enough to demand an upgrade from your existing e-reader? Let's take a closer look...

Device colour

I'll admit, the thought of coloured Kindles was exciting at first - now in raspberry pink and jade green, they look great. But I quickly realised not only does a change in chassis colour make absolutely no difference to my reading experience, I won't be able to see it when my Kindle is in a cover, which it will absolutely will be.

It's a nice touch if you want to use your Kindle Paperwhite without a case. But there are couple of issues there for me, personally. Firstly, I take my Kindle Paperwhite everywhere, and so having one of the best Kindle covers to protect it while out and about is a must.

I also find the device much easier to hold when in a case. The mixture of recycled materials it has taken to create the device has resulted in a shiny, quite slippery outer surface to hold without any kind of cover. And the new version being that little big bigger only adds to that problem – hence the need for a case, which covers the, albeit gorgeous, device colour.

Size matters

The next most noticeable difference is the Kindle Paperwhite size, which is slightly bigger than the previous version (bar its thickness, which is actually 0.3mm thinner). The added 2.7mm in height and 2.5mm in length means the Kindle Paperwhite 2024 can accommodate a full seven-inch screen – 0.2-inches bigger than its predecessor.

While this might not sound like much, when placed side-by-side there is a noticeable difference. And when holding to read, I am definitely more aware of the extra millimetres. But despite it being a little harder to hold in one hand to read, I really appreciate what the extra real estate adds to my overall reading experience. Words feel less squashed, which makes for a much more comfortable read.

While we're on the subject of the screen, another small but very welcome feature is having the page number and how far I am through the book shown as a percentage always visible in the bottom corners.

The biggest bugbear, and this is not new to the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite, is the position on the power button. On the bottom right-hand corner, it sits just where my pinky rests to hold it in my right hand, and I often turn it on and off by accident due to the placement.

Faster and better

Amazon promises 25% faster page turns with this model. Why it has focussed on this particular function being quicker is bizarre to me. You press the screen, the page turns - a 25 percent increase in speed on this is not something you are going to notice day-to-day.

That said, how much faster this version is at doing everything else is a highlight. Let's face it, e-readers aren't tablets, they are, as a general rule, quite clunky and slow. But the Paperwhite model is noticeably faster in its performance, from selecting and scrolling through settings to navigating the library and choosing new reads. And it makes for a much less frustrating user experience.

The 2024 model also states it needs just one charge every 12 weeks, based on 30-minutes of use every day at 50% brightness. Obviously this will vary depend on how much you use the device. I use mine daily, for at least that amount of time, and have done for the almost four weeks I have had it now. My battery currently reads 22%, so I don't think I will quite get 12 weeks from a full charge, but my use is well above what the data is based on. When it comes to battery life, it never ceases to amaze me just how efficient these devices are and how long they last on one charge.

Should you upgrade?

If you don't already own a Kindle, of any sort, then I can say with absolutely confidence, this device is a fair price and you won't regret investing in it. I have tried a number of ereaders in the last few years, and none come close to the Kindle Paperwhite for me. This device, if well looked after, will last years and more than earn the initial outlay.

However, if you already own a Paperwhite, and are thinking of upgrading, I would argue there's not much point. Unless you really love pink or green (and won't cover it with a case), or your Kindle is so old and slow it's time for a new one, there's really not that much to warrant discarding a perfectly good Kindle for what this new one does (or doesn't, in this case) offer.

All of the basic features are the same as the previous Paperwhite – waterproof, has a built in warm light to make reading at night (or whenever) more comfortable and the reading experience is customisable, as is with all Kindle devices. You can change the font type and size, adjust the margins etc to suit your preferred reading style. As far as all of that goes, nothing has changed, so it's really whether a new colour chassis and slightly bigger screen are enough of a pull to make you fork out another £160. For me, as an existing Kindle owner, it isn't. But if you're new to Amazon Kindles, the Paperwhite 2024 is worth every penny.

When it comes to the best Kindles, as an entry-level device this one would arguably come out on top. The usual retail price is just under £100, which is fantastic value, so to have it drop to less than £65 is a Prime Day deal that's really worth the hype.

It has multiple options for font sizes and styles to suit your eyesight, manual adjustable lighting to ease any strain, has enough storage for quite literally thousands of books, has a battery life that will last for weeks without charge, and is so small and compact, you barely notice it in your bag. 

In my Kindle (2022) vs Kindle Paperwhite comparison, I opted for the latter because it is slightly larger and has automatic lighting, so suited me perfectly. But for those with smaller hands, who want a more lightweight device, or who are new to ereaders and just want an easier way to enjoy a read on the move, you'd be hard pushed to find better than this brilliant compact option. 

It is a truth universally acknowledged that an owner of a Kindle must be in want of the best Kindle book deals. So, whilst most of the best Kindle book deals are on ebooks, audiobook deals are also aplenty. Some of the year's best-sellers, TikTok sensations, and most talked-about novels are available for free as audiobooks. That even includes A Little Life, which I think is the best book ever written (although, listen with caution, because it's a tough, emotional story). The beauty of listening instead of reading is that you can rest your eyes and relax in bed or you can crack on with house chores – all whilst losing yourself in a good book.

Amazon's daily Kindle book deals are just like the manic, crazy sales that leave people scrapping in the middle of shops, except, they're a lot calmer when they're online and these deals are Kindle books instead of handbags and TVs.

One of the most frequently asked questions around Kindle book deals is 'what is Kindle Unlimited? and should I get it?' We had a long list of Kindle book deals that nearly made the cut for this page and a fair few of them are free on Kindle Unlimited. Over there, you'll have access to thousands of books, audiobooks, comics, and magazines for £9.49 a month. Right now, there's even a free three month trial to take advantage of. If you know you're a prolific paperback consumer, Kindle Unlimited could be well worth your time.

The only downside of Kindle Unlimited is that you won't necessarily have access to the same list of the newest best-sellers. Instead, you'll need to keep an open mind, especially if you're interested in more niche genres. There will still be some big-name titles, but don't expect to have the same offering as Kindle deals.

The way I see it is: Kindle Unlimited is £9.49 a month, which is about the price of a paperback. If you read more than one book in a month and you're not super picky about what you read, you'll be saving money.

If you don't, it might be worth just shopping carefully. Kindle Unlimited offers a free 30-day trial, so you can try it before you buy. Plus, if you have Amazon Prime, you can try three months of Kindle Unlimited completely free. By that time, you'll know whether it's for you.

Essentially, when you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, you pay nothing for the first three months and then £9.49 a month to have access to millions of free books from Kindle's library. This will include eBooks, newspapers, comics, and audiobooks. Your magazine quota is unlimited.

When I say that there are millions of titles on Kindle Unlimited, I'm not using any artistic licence. There are literally three million titles out there. You can scroll through all the books on Kindle Unlimited here, where you'll be able to see that there really is something for everyone, from hard-hitting true stories and fascinating non-fiction to more lively rom-com and light reads.

How many books can you read with Kindle Unlimited?

Whilst Kindle Unlimited has millions of books available, you will be capped at 20 books in your library. This means you can download and read any 20 book at a time, not per month. When you've finished one, it's a good idea to remove it from your library to make more room. There's no limit on how many you can delete from your library, so you have, in theory, an endless amount of books to read. You just can't store them all at the same time.

You can also listen to over 6,000 audiobooks on Kindle Unlimited, so you'll never run out of food for thought there. Lots of Kindle Audiobooks are reduced in their daily deals too, so I've managed to listen to some relatively new releases without having to pay a penny.

What kind of books are on Kindle Unlimited?

The Kindle Unlimited Library is exactly what you would expect. There's something in every genre, from romance fiction and comedy to critically acclaimed titles and autobiographies. You could read all day, every day, for a whole year and never run out of titles, but, I'll be honest, not every book is of the same calibre.

From a personal perspective, I've really enjoyed reading the romance and thrillers on KU. The first Bridgerton book, the entire Harry Potter series, The Seven Sisters, and Victoria Hislop's novels are all available on Kindle Unlimited. However, most of this year's big-hitters aren't on there, because the big main publishing houses (Penguin Random House, Macmillan, Hachette, HarperCollins, or Simon and Schuster) either don't allow their books to be added or they have strict limits on their books.

In fact, most of the latest releases won't make it onto Kindle Unlimited for a good half a year, if ever, so you're more likely to end up reading some relatively obscure books from lesser-known authors while you wait for Jojo Moyes or Mariam Keyes to appear. In many ways, these self-published, lesser-known authors can offer a fresh and interesting perspective on well-trodden genres. However, I have come across plenty of books that I just couldn't get myself to finish. There are plenty of good books on Kindle Unlimited, but there are a lot that are less polished or self-published and those titles don't suit every reader.

Generally, there is a good range of books for people who read romance, thrillers, mystery, and women's fiction, but other niches aren't quite as well-served. Can I share Kindle Unlimited with anyone else?

Kindle Unlimited is excellent value for solo readers, but if your family tears through books almost as quickly as you do, there's another perk worth knowing about. Through Amazon Household, you can share your Kindle library with one other adult, giving them access to your eligible Kindle Unlimited titles, purchased books, and special offers without needing their own subscription.

There is one small catch: you can only share with one other adult at a time. If you decide to remove them and invite someone else, Amazon imposes a 365-day waiting period before you can switch households again. In other words, choose your reading partner wisely: this is a longer commitment than some book club memberships.

How do I get Kindle Unlimited for free?

If you're savvy, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Kindle Unlimited for a little less than £9.49 a month. To start with, you can get a 30 day free trial of Kindle Unlimited if you've never had an account before. This is designed to give you a taste of what's on offer and, the likelihood is, you'll keep it running.

Some of Kindles new models, including the Kindle Colorsoft range, are offering Kindle Unlimited free for three months, so if you don't already own a Kindle, this is a great opportunity to get a big bundle.

It's a great opportunity to see whether you read enough to warrant the price tag, but also to make sure that there are enough books for you on Kindle Unlimited.

It can be tricky to pin down whether Kindle Unlimited is for you or not, so I've put a list of the pros and cons to help you decide whether one section outweighs the other.

• You can share the account with one other person and split the cost
• There are over three million books that you can read, so you won't be short on choice.
• Kindle Unlimited covers audiobooks, comics, and other media.
• You're more likely to read niche books that are self-published and unusual.
• Reading isn't restricted to one device, so you can transfer between multiple devices (your tablet, phone, and eReader) without losing your page
• You can get a free trial anyway, so you can see whether the books in the Kindle Library will suit you.
• The app is easy to navigate, so it's easy to build a good reading habit.
• You can read exclusive books that aren't available anywhere else.
• You can read multiple books at a time without any limits or late fees.
• There are books that you might not buy, but you can read them anyway.
• You don't have to have a Kindle to use it - as long as you can download the app, you can read from any device.

That all sounds very impressive, but Kindle Unlimited isn't without some drawbacks. Here are the ones that stand-out:

• If you don't read more than two books a month you'll be overpaying
• Selective or picky readers might not have access to the specific book that they're looking for. The subscription doesn't cover all books, so you have to be open-minded.
• The latest releases aren't on there for a long time (and some never make it).
• The standard of books isn't consistent. Some self-published books are quite amateur (some aren't though).
• Some people say it's hard to find the exact book your looking for; you're more likely to find a book by chance.
• Kindle daily deals can give you books for free (or 99p) that are much newer and more popular.
• Some genres are really underserved, so you won't actually have a choice of three million.

Is Kindle Unlimited worth it for new releases?

If you're a prolific paperback reader who knows that they can get through at least three to five books a year, Kindle Unlimited is a no-brainer. You'll have access to lots of books that are on your long list of books to read, but there are also some more niche, unusual books that you otherwise might not have picked up. I've had it for years and it makes total financial sense for me since speed reading through rom-coms was once one of my biggest outgoings.

However, if you like to take your time over a book, Kindle Unlimited might not make much financial sense for you. The restricted library won't let you access whichever book you've chosen to read that month and so you'll end up limiting your options for more money than a Kindle book would cost anyway.

It's also not the wisest investment for readers who like to spin through the latest releases. In my experience, Kindle Unlimited won't have access to these until a long while after the hype has dyed down, by which time, your friends will have already dropped the spoilers or they'll have forgotten the plot too much to have an in-depth debrief with you about it. So, if you like to be on top of the latest and greatest on the shelves, you might be better off keeping an eye on Kindle's daily deals.

Kindle Unlimited vs Prime Reading - what's the difference?

Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading might seem similar at first glance: both give you access to a library of books at no extra cost beyond a subscription. However, there are key differences. Kindle Unlimited is a standalone subscription that costs £9.49 per month and gives you access to over three million titles, including eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, and comics. It’s designed for keen readers who want a wide, constantly refreshed selection and aren’t overly concerned with reading the latest releases from big publishers.

Prime Reading, on the other hand, is a free perk included with an Amazon Prime membership, so you don’t pay anything extra if you already subscribe to Prime. However, the library is much smaller (typically a few thousand curated titles at a time) and it rotates regularly. Think of Prime Reading as a taster or sampler, with popular titles and hidden gems but far fewer options overall.

If you’re a casual reader or already paying for Prime, it’s a great bonus. But if you read several books a month or want more variety, Kindle Unlimited offers much more depth and flexibility.

Does Kindle Unlimited have new releases available?

Whilst there are millions of titles on Kindle Unlimited, those aren't necessarily the ones that are splashed across the Waterstones windows. This is where Kindle Unlimited and Netflix are really similar: they have lots of popular books later down the line and plenty of their own, more niche novels, but they won't have the season's most spoken about.

Is Kindle Unlimited really like Netflix for books?

People have been calling Kindle Unlimited the Netflix of books and the analogy works on many levels. For the monthly subscription price of £9.49, you have access to a library of millions of books. They've got rich titles across a range of genres, from autobiographies, non-fiction novels, holiday reads, and sensational series'. It doesn't stop there either. You can get copies of comics, audiobooks, and all your favourite magazines (I hope you're thinking of us there) to read from your tablet too.

You know how Netflix has its own series and some of the biggest films and sets from the box office? Kindle has the same thing. You'll never be short on things to read and you'll be able to get your teeth stuck into plenty of page-turners (there are titles such as Cut & Thirst by Margaret Atwood, The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin, and Lisa Jewell's The Family Remains name a few), but it's not exhaustive. Some of the newest books with limited copyrights won't be on offer with Kindle Unlimited, which can be a bit frustrating if you like to be on top of the hottest books in Waterstones.

The way Kindle Unlimited works is by 'renting' books to you. On your account, you can 'check out' 20 different titles at the same time. It's a lot like libraries, but without the due date being stamped on the front of your book. That means there are also no fines for late returns. Once you've finished your book, you can return it and take out a new one. It's every bookworm's dream.

How do I get Kindle Unlimited for free?

It's the big question, isn't it? Whilst you won't be able to have Kindle Unlimited free forever, you'll be able to get at least a 30-day free trial by following a few simple steps. At the moment, I've found a way to get 30 days of Kindle Unlimited free, which is perfect for the summer and holidays, but Kindle is quite clear that it's a limited deal only, so grab it while you can.

Do I have to have a Kindle to get Kindle Unlimited?

You don't need a Kindle to enjoy Kindle Unlimited. All you need to do is download the Kindle App on whichever device you have and you can read from your tablet or phone. In fact, plenty of people have the app on their phone, so if you're travelling without your Kindle and thinking about what's happening in the next chaper of your page-turner, or you want to re-read a section, you can do so.

Can I share my Kindle Unlimited with other devices?

Yes - you can share your Kindle Unlimited between different devices. The subscription will only work with your Kindle account. Each member of the family will need their own login, but they can use that across the app, their Kindle, and any other devices.

How do I cancel my Kindle Unlimited subscription?

If you've had your trial and you're not sure that Kindle Unlimited is for you, it's easy to cancel your subscription. All you have to do is go to Your Memberships & Subscriptions, which is in your account settings. Then select 'Cancel Kindle Unlimited Subscription.' Amazon will keep your subscription active right up until your next billing date. Once that's passed, you'll lose access to all the titles you had previously downloaded.

Can you keep books after cancelling Kindle Unlimited?

Sadly not. Once you end your subscription, you lose access to your read books. Technically, KU is a loaning service, so if you think of it like your local library, it would be pretty sparse if you kept the books you read. I thought about the same loophole too though.

Is Kindle Unlimited good for kids?

My verdict on Kindle Unlimited

Amazon Kindles are ubiquitous in the e-reader market – and for good reason. They're a convenient, reliable way to read your favourite e-books, and have become competitively priced. That said, we love a deal at woman&home, so if you're looking for a saving, you're in the right place.

For starters, Amazon has Kindle Daily Deals, which is where they drop the price of best-sellers to nothing (they're totally free) or to 99p. Then, there's Kindle Unlimited. Essentially, Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service. You pay £9.49 a month to have access to over three million eBooks, audiobooks, comics, and magazines. It's a good deal if you're a speed reader.

When is the best time to buy a Kindle?

The best time to buy a Kindle is during Amazon sale events, such as Prime Day or Black Friday. Amazon hosts multiple sale events throughout the year and this is the time when the RRP of all of their Kindles will be slashed by the most. Amazon have historically been the most ruthless retailer when it comes to Kindle deals and discounts.

It's nearly Amazon Prime Day now. The one in last July saw some of the lowest prices recorded on the retail giant's bestselling e-readers. Offers landed again in October for the brand's Prime Big Deals Days, with almost every model selling out on day one. Shortly after this, Amazon launched new iterations of most of these Kindle models. As it doesn't launch new Kindles every year, I'd be surprised if they take such a ruthless 'everything must go'-type approach to Kindle prices next Prime Day.

Are Kindles cheapest over Prime Day or Black Friday?

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2024 are now over for another year (Black Friday will next fall on 28 November and Cyber Monday on 1 December 2025, if you were wondering). Amazon's Black Friday sale began on 21 November, and saw surprisingly good savings on even the newest Kindle models that had just been released in October, such as 26% off the All-new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2024.

The prices were consistent from the early Black Friday sales start of 21 November right through to Cyber Monday on 2 December. Both Amazon and third-party retailers offered the same prices on Kindles, though not every retailer stocked every model, and many offered their own spin such as bonus loyalty scheme points, free gifts, trade-in credit or extra discounts on other sale items.

Over Amazon Prime Day, we saw a full £100 off the premium Kindle Scribe, then over Black Friday we found a massive £125 off the model. As mentioned, other retailers also get in on the action over Black Friday, so prices are typically lower then and incentives to shop at each store (such as free gifts) higher.

What's a good price for a Kindle?

Even at full price, some of Amazon's Kindles are great value. The original Kindle (RRP £94.99) and the Paperwhite (RRP £159.99) are both competitively priced within the e-reader market – despite the fact that the new 2024 versions are each £10 more expensive than previous iterations were. However, after years of watching the Kindle sales and deal prices, I've seen the original Kindle for sale as cheap as £35. There's no guarantee that it'll return to that price.

Generally, anything above 20% off the original RRP is a deal worth considering. However, it's also worth having a look at price comparison or price history sites. I have an add-on called CamelCamelCamel that shows you the history of prices for any product on Amazon, so you can know whether you're getting a good deal relative to the recent offers that have been around.

Are Kindles worth it?

You might think that we're all Kindle converts at woman&home, since we have such comprehensive coverage of all the Kindle models, but we're a well-balanced team.

Some of us refuse to relinquish our paperbacks, because, let's face it, nothing smells quite like a printed page and nothing feels the same as cracking the spine of a paperback. However, there is a group of us who recognise Kindles for their practicalities. You can pack endless books into your carry-on luggage if you take a slim Kindle with you. Plus, you can enlarge the text (bye-bye reading glasses), backlight the page (hello late-night reading), and look up the definitions of words in just a moment. They're both practical and savvy, so Kindles certainly serve a purpose compared to books.

In the broader market, Kindles are some of the best e-readers out there. Amazon have had nearly 20 years to refine their tablets, offering the sleekest, smartest set-up out there. Their library is the most vast, the reading experience is the most seamless, and the technology is the speediest. Kindles have models tailored to every kind of bookworm.

Should I buy a Kindle with or without ads?

You'll see different storage options for most Kindle models as well as an option to buy the Kindle with or without ads. I've been on both sides of the table and, I actually don't think there's much point in buying one of the models without ads. Sometimes, the adverts can be useful.

When you buy an ad-supported Kindle, your e-reader will show you ads on the lock screen when you turn the device off. This doesn't use up any more of your battery and, they can actually be quite useful for finding recommendations. It's a bit like watching the trailers of other films when you're at the cinema. If you're into it, you can have some fun. Plus, if you hate the ads, there are ways to disable them, they're just a little tedious.

If I were to write a Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite comparison a couple of years ago, the result would have been very clear cut in favour of the latter. But Amazon's upgrade to its standard Kindle back in 2022 has levelled the playing field a lot, and now there are just a few key features which set the two (and parting with an extra £50) apart. 

The Kindle Paperwhite is Amazon's more premium ereader – big screen to fit more copy on the 'page', high resolution for crisp, sharp text and an adjustable light to help ease any strain on the eyes over long periods. The standard Kindle, as the name would suggest, is a more basic version of it's luxurious younger sibling. 

There is a lot of similarity between these two devices, hence why they take the top two spots on our best Kindles round up – here I'll go through the key differences to help you decide which model is best suited to you.

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite: specs

As previously mentioned, the spec list reads very similar for both devices, with a few key differences. Some you might expect, others are a pleasant surprise to see included in the basic version (storage size, for example). Let's take a deeper dive into those specific areas.

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite: Price

Before we go into features, it's worth having doing a quick price comparison. The standard Kindle, with 16GB storage, starts at £84.99 on Amazon. However, for that price you will be served ads, so it's well worth paying the extra £5 to get rid and enjoy uninterrupted reading. 

The standard Kindle Paperwhite costs £149.99 - again, that's with 16GB storage and ads. Remove them and you're looking at an extra tenner on top. Both of these prices include three months free Kindle Unlimited. 

This means at basic device level, the standard Kindle costs at least £50 less - the noticeable differences being it's not waterproof, as big (in size) and doesn't have an adjustable colour temperature on the front light. 

In terms of the cost of adding books, this is the same for both devices. You either subscribe to Kindle Unlimited for £9.99 a month, or pay as you go. 

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite: Design & Display

The screen size of these two devices is one thing that might be a deciding factor for some. The Kindle Paperwhite is bigger, in length and width, and while it's only marginally, in use it makes a significant difference. 

The standard Kindle measures 6.2 by 4.3 by 0.32 inches – the actual screen reading size is six inches. And it weighs 158 grams – almost 50 grams less than the Paperwhite. In short, it's smaller and lighter and so more comfortable to hold for longer periods and well suited to smaller hands. 

Another key difference when it comes to design is the backlit display, which comes with both devices, however the standard Kindle doesn't have the same level of brightness as the Paperwhite. That said, it's still enough for reading after dark. 

The extra money you would pay for the Paperwhite means you get functionality that automatically tweaks the backlight to complement your surroundings, whereas with the standard Kindle this is a manual process. With the Paperwhite, you also get a device that is waterproof and a screen that is flush against the casing. The latter might seem insignificant, but when using it really adds a premium feel. 

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite: Storage and battery life

The standard Kindle used to come with 8GB of storage as standard, which is still significant when it comes to downloading books. Looking at the chart below, you can see the average book and file sizes, and then how many would fit on an 8GB device. So even with that level you wouldn't run out of space anytime soon. 

But Amazon upgraded its basic level Kindle in 2022, and it now comes with double the amount of storage as standard, which is incredible for the price point, and exactly the same as the basic Paperwhite. You can upgrade (at a cost) to have more storage, however, the standard amount will be more than enough for most. Storage wise, the standard (and less expensive) Kindle has you covered. 

In terms of battery life, Amazon lists its standard Kindle as having up to six weeks and the Paperwhite up to 10. I have been using the Paperwhite for well over three months now, and granted I have had it on aeroplane mode (to remove any distractions) and it is still on 22%. There have often been times I have thrown it in my bag and then panicked I haven't charged it for ages and it would run out, but I have always been amazed at just how long the battery lasts. And the same goes for the standard Kindle too - a full charge and it has lasted weeks. When it comes to battery life, these devices just keeping going and going – and they only take a few hours to fully juice back up too. 

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite: Verdict

As e-readers go, both of these devices are, in my opinion, exceptional value for money. The smaller Kindle is cheaper, and it feels and looks it, but it still fulfils it's purpose well and is really well suited to those with smaller hands or who might struggle with the usual weight of holding a book. It charges quickly, lasts for weeks, has more than enough storage as standard and is a size that means it will fit in even the smallest of bags, so you can always have your favourite read with you. 

The Paperwhite is the more luxury version, and with that comes a higher price tag. But you also get a bigger screen that is flush to its casing and that automatically adjusts to the light to ease strain on your eyes. It's waterproof and Amazon claims the battery life is longer than that of a standard device (although I have yet to experience that when testing). 

If money is no object and I had to pick, I would go for the Paperwhite, mostly because I read quite quickly and don't like the feeling of having to keep turning the page as regularly as I was with the smaller screen. I also have bigger hands and so the Paperwhite just suits me better overall. But if I was on a budget, I would be very happy with the standard Kindle to help me enjoy my favourite hobby whenever, wherever.

For a long time I was very anti Kindles, or ereaders of any kind, actually. There is enough technology in the world for everything else, and the last thing I wanted to do was let it replace the joy I get from holding and reading an actual book. And nothing will ever replace that feeling, but having tested Kindles for a while now, there is a space for them, particularly if you don't have space for lots of books at home and like to take a selection of reads with you when on the go, as I do.

Until very recently, there was a clear distinction between Amazon's ereaders, both in price and functionality. But an upgrade to the entry-level Kindle back in 2022 closed the gap significantly on the latter. 

To describe it as a basic model is not entirely accurate, with it now having many of the features you'd find in Amazon's more expensive ereader models. The upgrade saw the Kindle's screen resolution increased to the same level as all other devices (300ppi), and it now comes with double the amount of storage (16GB) as standard, which quite literally puts thousands of books at your fingertips. 

So why choose this model over the Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Oasis? In short, it's the cheapest, smallest and lightest, and takes one of the top spots in our round up of the best Kindles. Now, let's take a deep dive into the Kindle (2022)...

It's excellent value

The standard Kindle costs just under £100, which is almost £50 less than the next model - the Kindle Paperwhite (unless you score a great Prime Day Kindle deal, that is). Now, for that extra money, you definitely get more, literally. For a start the Paperwhite is bigger overall, with a larger screen for reading, it definitely has a more premium feel to it, particularly with the screen flush to the casing, it's waterproof and has automatically adjustable lighting. 

But, if you're not planning on taking it anywhere near water and just want an easy, very portable and convenient way to read on the go, the standard Kindle is all you need.

It's brilliantly compact

The size and weight of the Kindle are definite selling points. It weighs just over 150g, and is so compact even the smallest adult hands would be able to use it one-handed. It fits in pretty much any every day bag – including the mini Uniqlo crossbody – and I can even get it in quite a few of my coat and jacket pockets too. 

A standard UK novel measures 198 x 129mm, whereas the Kindle's dimensions are 157.8 x 108.6, with an actual screen reading size of six inches. That's over an inch smaller in length than a book, and if you read quickly like I do, you may well find yourself tapping the screen constantly for more. But that's where the Kindle's settings can really help. 

Depending on your eyesight, you can change the size of the text to fit more on, but there's a limit and I found the smallest size way too little to read at all, let alone for long periods. That said, I found two sizes up perfect for me, and means I can get more on each 'page', making for a much more enjoyable reading experience. 

Battery life and storage is excellent

This is the same for ereaders in general, to be honest, but the Kindle is no exception when it comes to battery life - it's amazing. Like anything, how quickly the battery runs our depends on use, but even the most heavy user will be able to use this for weeks without needing to recharge. 

Amazon claims the battery lasts for six weeks, based on an estimate of reading for 30 minutes every days. I use mine every day for anywhere between 30 - 90 minutes, and I am on week four without charge and still have 34% charge left. This may well be down to it being on airplane mode, which I always have it set on while reading to remove any distractions (or temptation to use the internet). I would advise using this feature wherever possible, and keeping screen on a low light, to preserve what is already exceptional battery life. 

When it comes to storage, it excels there too. Now with 16GB as standard, the entry level Kindle can hold thousands of titles, so you will never be short of something to read. 

The perfect portable companion

If all you want is a device that can store and allow you to read all the books you could ever wish for, wherever you are, the Kindle is hard to beat. There's no frills here, it's simple to use, has an excellent battery life and has good enough lighting to read after dark without any extra lighting. It does its job as an ereader exceptionally well, at a very affordable price. It's the best entry-level, compact ereader for on-the-go book fans. 

Reading is my absolute most favourite pastime, that is, when I get time to indulge. Working full time and having three young kids leaves little time to enjoy my hobby, however I try to squeeze in a page or two as often as the opportunity presents itself. Which more often than not means a book is always with me, wherever I am.  

My love of books and reading started decades ago, and so by the time ereaders became a thing, I was entirely captured by the tactile experience only a physical book can offer. Friends would rave about how 'easy' and 'portable' their Kindles were, and how they could access pretty much any book they wanted at the click of a button. But I wasn't swayed, and stuck to scouring through all the physical Amazon book deals, convinced an ereader would never compare to the joy I get from holding a book – turning the page, breathing in the paper's scent, creasing the spine, and securing my novelty bookmark firmly in place. 

So when I got the chance to try an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, I wasn't overly keen. While you can quite often get them at a reduced price in a great Prime Day Kindle deal or in the Amazon sale, I had no intention of switching to an ereader anytime soon. Compared to just grabbing a book and getting stuck in, the initial Kindle set up is a bit of a faff. It needs wifi connection, the Kindle app to sync it to your phone and an Amazon account in order to actually get buy books for it. That said, the steps are quick and relatively simple, and once it's set up, that's it, the most you have to do is buy the books on Amazon, which is the same as you would a physical book anyway. 

Now set up, a couple of books downloaded and ready to go, I started reading. And I never thought I'd say this, but it has very quickly become my favourite companion. Here's how the Kindle Paperwhite convinced me to switch to ebooks (for some of the time, at least). 

It's light and very portable

I should start by saying when I initially turned the Kindle Paperwhite on I was not at all impressed. The screen looked like something out of the 90s, and its featureset was basic. Very basic. But then I had to remind myself this is not a tablet. It's an ereader, and for such a device it's actually got a lot of features tailored to making it easy and enjoyable to use. 

The device weighs 205 grams (without a case). For context, that is roughly grams lighter than my iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the average 300-page paperback book. It's super-light, so much so I can read holding it one hand for long periods of time without noticing any discomfort. 

Its overall dimensions are 174.2 x 124.6 x 8.1mm. Again, for content, Apple's basic iPad is 248.6 × 179.5 × 7.0, so it's smaller in height and width, but slightly thicker, which I think is a positive as it helps to give a more authentic book feel. 

A standard paperback book in the UK measures 198 x 129mm (with varying thickness), so the Kindle Paperwhite is slightly smaller, which worried me somewhat at first. Would being smaller make it hard to read, or mean I would constantly be turning - or tapping - the page? The answer to both was no. The screen size is sufficient enough to get a decent amount of words on each 'page', and at no point did it feel like I was racing through them. 

The backlight on the Kindle has obviously been through rigorous testing – it works perfectly to provide soft, anti-glare lighting night and day – and the font size by default (which you can change) was perfect for me. 

This size makes it easy to take the device anywhere. It fits in the smallest of bags – my trusty Uniqlo crossbody included – and weighs so little I barely feel it. This is a huge plus if, like me, you like to have a book on you at all times, but are limited by how cumbersome physical books are. It's also fantastic for saving space in a suitcase, if, again like me, most of it is usually taken up by holidays reads. 

There's always something to read

There's nothing quite like disappointment of getting to the end of a brilliant book, and having nothing to follow it with. With the Kindle Paperwhite, you are spoilt for choice, with all genres, new and old, quite literally at your fingertips. This means never again compromising on the amount of holiday reads, and no matter where you are, you can simply read your next chosen title. 

The Kindle needs a wifi connection to download books, but once they're on, you can read them on or offline. So if you want a selection of books to ensure you never run out, it's worth choosing and downloading a few at a time, just incase you're ever without wifi. 

When it comes to where to get your chosen titles, there are a few options. You can buy them as you go directly from Amazon, but if you read a lot, you can save by subscribing to Kindle Unlimited, which gives you access to as many books as you want for a flat fee of £9.49 per month. That said, Kindle versions are often much cheaper than their paperback counterparts, so it's worth checking to make sure a subscription will actually save you money before signing up.

The battery lasts weeks

One of the things a physical book will always beat an ereader on is how long it can be used. But the battery life on this device has been one of the biggest surprises for me. I recently charged my Kindle to go away for the week, and took the USB cable for it thinking I would definitely need to give it some more juice while I was there. I was wrong. After downloading four books and putting it on aeroplane mode at the beginning of May, the battery is still on 34 percent, despite almost daily use. An added bonus is the USB charging cable provided can also be used to charge my phone and laptop. 

It has built in lights

I had, for a long time up to now, owned a pair of very (not-so) stylish neck reading lights in order to read in bed. Not wanting to keep my partner awake by flooding the bedroom with light, the lowest setting of my neck light solved that problem. But then I started reading with the Kindle, which has a backlight that provides enough illumination to comfortable read in the dark, and my neck light was no more. 

On a night flight to Portugal recently, using the Kindle Paperwhite meant I could read without disturbing other passengers with the overhead light. And while reading in the car makes me nauseous, my son can use it without needing additional lighting that might distract me while driving. 

The Kindle has settings to manage backlighting, with an adjustable screen colour temperature to set the amount of blue light it is emitting. There is an automatic schedule feature timed around sunrise and sunset, but this feature can also be adjusted manually to whatever suits. 

It's waterproof

A feature you might not think is particularly useful, however if you are, like me, a fan of reading (and dropping books) in the bath - or have small children who like to throw whatever they can in water – the Kindle being waterproof will be one of its best features.  

While I haven't tested this, Amazon claims the Kindle Paperwhite is waterproof enough to be submerged in water up to six feet deep and survive to tell the tale, which makes reading in or near water even more relaxing. 

It gives things you didn't know you needed

Another big pro of the Kindle being an electronic device is the amount of not just books, but information about books it can store. It will depend on what I am reading, but I will often stop to Google something I have come across in a book, but with the Kindle, much of those details will be included. The X-Ray feature gives you to access more about people and specific terms used, and it's something I draw on regularly to help me better understand what I'm reading. It's like a mini dictionary, encyclopedia and ereader all rolled into one.  

Bizarrely, the one thing I dislike about the Paperwhite the most, is also one of my favourite things about it. Unless you call it up on screen, there is no way of knowing how you are progressing through a book. And it's that lack of visual reminder that I like and don't like at the same time. 

One of the things I love about it the most, is despite it being able to connect to the internet, a Kindle Paperwhite is not the device you would want to do that on. And therefore when you are using it, you're cut off from the online world, despite it being a digital device. It's much like a traditional book in that sense - when I read I want to get lost in the story, not be distracted by the online world at large. 

Same but different

If you'd asked me just a few weeks ago if I'd read with a Kindle, it would have been a firm no. A huge lover of physical books, I was - and still am - reluctant to lose the tactile experience only they can provide. But I'm really pleasantly surprised to find how much I enjoy using the Kindle Paperwhite for reading. It makes being able to enjoy one of my favourite hobbies much more easy and accessible, and puts titles I might never have thought to read before at my fingertips (at a really affordable price). 

For me, the Kindle will never replace curling up in bed with a good book, or the satisfaction I get from turning the pages, closing it for the final time and marvelling at cover art. I still have a collection of physical books to read, and they always take priority when I'm at home. The Kindle is great, but the feeling of a real book in my hand simply can't be replicated. 

It will also never take the place of books I hold dear to my heart, ones that will forever adorn my bookshelves. But what it gives me in being able to access my hobby so much more is worth every penny of the initial outlay. And, with a list of books I've thoroughly enjoyed on my Kindle and now want to buy in print, it's proving to be a very valuable tool in helping my beloved (physical) book collection grow.

It has all the features of the best cases: it's lightweight, sleek, and simply designed, but you don't have to pay a premium for any of the neat features. One of the reasons I particularly love this as an everyday option is the range of simple colourways and jazzy designs that let you express some personality in the way you cover your Kindle.

In spite of its price, the FINTIE still has lots of useful features. For example, the magnetic closure automatically triggers the sleep/wake function, saving your battery from any needless draining. Then there's the shell, which is wrapped in hard plastic with vegan-friendly PU leather. It’s the perfect example of style and substance. Plus, if you've invested in the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, this cover will allow you to charge wirelessly. Nothing is left to be desired.

Best Kindle case stand

I affectionately call this the Swiss army knife of Kindle covers. MoKo, the veteran case makers for Kindles, make plenty of options. This one though, is my favourite. It comes with all of the options you could ever think of: a vast choice of colours (tick) and patterns (tick); a front cover to protect the screen (tick); a hand strap for secure one-handed reading (tick). I'm not done. Want a back stand for no-handed reading? Tick, tick, and tick. It even has things you didn’t know you needed like a card holder. It's perfect if you read to escape your phone but you know that you might want to buy a coffee when you’re out and about.

Online, there is lots and lots of love for this case and its multitude of features. The tight fit is a positive for most people (but for some a bit of an inconvenience). The case is also a bit of an unsung hero for anyone who suffers from arthritis, hand pain or low grip strength. The hand strap deserves a nod for catering to every kind of reader. And, what I also love, is that MoKo throws in some big features, without shouting about it. This is the case, just in case you want a case, in a case, in a case. That is to say, you’re going on holiday with your Kindle that already has a cover for when you’re using it, but want a little something extra to make sure it stays secure inside your bag. The belts and braces approach.

TiMOVO offers a great option for you. It's a well-priced option when you consider everything else available. Best luxury Kindle case

Are you part of the anti-eReader crowd? This cover could just be a turning point in your relationship with these smart devices. Alternatively, if you’re already team Kindle but want a case that says “I still appreciate a real book” then you are also in the right place.

There is so much to love about this case. The luxury faux leather covers offer an incredible range of high-quality finish prints. Ranging from an all-time classic tan brown, the Pride & Prejudice cover, or even the Advanced Potion Making title. It’s safe to say there is something for everyone.

Best water safe Kindle case

If you’re someone who collects the corks from wine bottles (me too) get ready to add this cover to your collection. The quality of this case is clear from the get-go. And, really, for £44.99 you would expect nothing less.

I love the lightweight design, which is available in two colourways: light cork or dark cork. They look natural and simple, but each also offers enough grip for you to read one-handed reading (presumably your other hand will be opening a bottle of wine — you can never have enough cork in your life). It's also easy to overlook some of the simple, but useful touches that Amazon includes in their cases, such as the magnetic automatic sleep/wake function activation. I think every case you buy should have this.

When I looked through the reviews, it was immediately clear that there is a long line of people queuing up to comment on the excessive price. Amazon seems to be fairly overzealous with the creation of their price tags. However, people are still buying and enjoying the product, so it must be worth it.

Our one real criticism is that the water-safe aspect is a bit of a stretch. The product image shows water droplets on the surface of the cover. The reality is that it doesn’t cover any of the ports, so unless the water in question is targeted directly at that surface and doesn’t hit any of the ports, it’s great. The rest of the water-safe features are actually integrated into your Kindle and they wouldn't change whether you had a cover or not. At the end of the day opting for this case is an aesthetic choice, and a good one (if you have the money).

Best fabric Kindle case

In the same way that Apple makes great accessories for their devices, Amazon makes some of the best cases for Kindles. This lightweight fabric cover is the perfect pairing for anyone wanting a simple and soft outer shell that's soft and easy to hold. Plus, it comes with all the product support Amazon provides in the event something isn’t up to scratch.

The simple design makes this easy to take from the bedroom to the boardroom, so it's perfect for super-keen readers. Plus, it comes with lots of useful features. For example, the cover automatically sends your Kindle to sleep, or wakes it up, depending on whether it's open or closed. If you're reading in bed, you can fold the cover fully back on itself, whilst still holding your Kindle in one hand. It's an easy option if you're not quite sure what you want from your case.

On the whole, this is a crowd-pleaser for all the reasons I’ve explained above. Customer reviews say that it fits like a glove, it's lightweight and relatively protective for small scuffs and scratches. The main areas of concern and the problems that seem to crop up, albeit infrequently, are the fabric on the corners coming away after a few months of use, and the fact that fabric is a hard material to clean, but ultimately that’s why you have a cover, so it gets dirty instead of your Kindle.

Best patterned Kindle case

The MoKo case for your Kindle is for people who live life in full colour. If you want everyone to know your personality type just by looking at your eReader, this is the place to start. Whether you're Vincent van Gogh’s biggest fan or looking for pops of bright colours, this is for you.

Synthetic leather can go one of two ways: they're either cheap and plastic-y or just like the real thing. Thankfully, this falls into the latter category. I love it, as do all the customers in the reviews). It brings all the benefits of being easily wipeable, nice and soft to hold, and vegan-friendly for gifting, but without the price or leather smell that puts some people off real leather. Plus, if you have any doubts over the quality you can sleep easy, MoKo offers a lifetime warranty, a mic-drop moment prompting you to trust this case and pair it with your Kindle.

As with nearly all the other Kindle cases I’ve reviewed there is the magnet for automatic sleep/wake. It’s not included in every single one, I just consider it a must-have.

I had a look into the reviews, and this one has some of the most loved of all the cases. Nearly 80% of the Amazon reviews are full 5 stars. Clearly it has been made to be robust, if not everyone would be returning them and MoKo would be out of business. One keen reviewer observed the fact that the closing magnet isn’t as strong as on some alternatives, so it may fall open if held upside down. This could be just a manufacturing quirk on that specific one as it doesn’t come up frequently. One word of advice from me though: be careful with compatibility and be sure to read the latest advice on the product page.

Best clear Kindle case

Really this is a case for someone who doesn’t want a case, but at the same time doesn’t want to take a chance and end up with a smashed screen. Some people say that clear cases are the way to pay homage to the designers of the device, because you stay as true to the original form as possible. Others say they just want simplicity. Either way, this is the w&h-approved option.

In days gone by silicone would have been the material of choice for a flexible case, in this case, you have TPU. Whilst it is as flexible as silicone, it isn’t foldable. For the most part, this is fine, but the case can be a bit of a squeeze to get on. On top of this, it’s a bit slidy, not to be left near the edge of a downhill-facing pillow.

If you want a case that has a 'not even there' look, this isn't quite the one for you. It's (rather ironically) clear from the reviews that this isn't as 'crystal clear' as the seller's description. You can still see your Kindle through it, but you'll know that there's a case there too.

The other thing is, whilst the corners are raised to protect the screen, this is only useful if your Kindle lands on a completely smooth surface with no stones in sight. If you’re out and about, the chances of there being some debris waiting to smash your screen seem fairly high. Aside from these little niggles it’s well-priced and a lot of people really like it.

Best Kindle case for protection

Bear with me on this one. “Protection focused” may seem like a bit of a stretch, but it still does the job really well. Have you ever had a hard phone case, taken it off to find all the grit inside has actually scratched the edge of the device as much as if you’d had no case at all? Enter gel case.

This is grafted from TPU gel, but it isn't really like TPU at all. It isn’t slippy on fabric, it’s actually more silicone-esque. This is the key. The snug case hugs every millimetre of your Kindle so grit can’t enter in the first place. If it does, it won’t slide around like with a harder plastic case. Plus, if you want to add a pop of colour to your reading collection, you've got a whole range of options to pick between. Now, your Kindle can match your chosen genre, holiday, or mood.

If you’ve checked any of the other reviews on this page you’ll notice a bit of a theme. The square colours on the page aren't exactly the same in real life for most other Kindles. With this case, everyone is delighted — a breath of fresh air for us.

There is a lot of reference to the non-slip feel which we should expect with the gel as mentioned. The only thing to be wary of is this is not a book style. You could be forgiven for thinking that the main photo shows the cover coming across the front screen. This is actually the back of the Kindle, don’t fall into that trap and you’ll be a happy reader.

Best leather Kindle case

True to form, Amazon makes another one of the best Kindle cases out there. This is more expensive than most of the models on the list. However, it is a premium product catering to the audience looking for real leather, so a lift in price should be expected.

As with all of their cases, you are getting something lightweight, well built, and well designed too. You can fold back the microfibre/leather cover for reading with one hand and there is a choice of four colours. Note that even though the photo shows a fifth bright pink colourway, but it no longer seems to be an option.

Reading through the online reviews, the verdict is simple. If you have owned a leather case for your Kindle before, you will probably prefer your old one. Maybe this is sentimental, or maybe there is a real difference, the jury is out. If, however, it is the first leather case you have bought for your Kindle, you’re going to love it. You won’t be thinking of how things were in the good old days, and since this is a new release, we’ll have to wait 9 years to see if it lasts 12 years as one customer reported on the old version. Best Kindle case for bed

Why is a hand strap so useful for your Kindle? How many times have you drifted off to sleep and dropped your book or phone on your face? Thought so. We’ve all been there. But late-night nose injuries are a thing of the past with this nifty case by FSCOVER. It's made of easy-to-clean faux leather, it's relatively lightweight (although not the lightest), and it's neatly designed too. The magnetic closure is the ever-welcome addition to automatically put your eReader into sleep or wake mode. Bedtime reading has never been so easy.

The only complaint in the mix is the durability of the case. This seems to become a problem when it’s taken off the device which is something you may want to do to clean your Kindle. It’s not a widespread complaint, but worth taking into account either way. Aside from that everyone is happy. The strap being placed in the middle is most welcomed by left-handers and right-handers alike. Happy reading.

Best budget Kindle case

Right now, this is reduced on Amazon and quite frankly, at £6.99 you would be crazy to not buy this. Even with the elastic straps (that aren’t as slick as the dedicated slot, or NASA-grade Velcro) this isn't one to scroll past. We could plausibly accept this being a more expensive model since it has several other useful features such as the stand and the hand strap. Even if you don’t have a Kindle right now, but are thinking of getting one, this costs the same price as a meal deal in some shops, hard to go wrong.

One important aspect to note is that if you have the 11th Gen (2022 Version) Kindle Paperwhite, this isn’t for you. In theory, it should fit the 6.8-inch Paperwhite but so far no reviews mention it. It’s a Prime product so in the worst case scenario it can be easily returned. Some people have also commented on the quality, but there almost isn’t a cheaper case on the whole of Amazon, so what can you expect?

This is the number one reason people return Kindle cases: they don’t fit. We favoured cases with clear compatibility listings and plenty of positive reviews (ideally 100+), which often flag any sizing issues.

Do Kindle cases fit all Kindles?

Sadly, no. You'll need to check the compatibility of each eReader with whichever case you're looking at. Generally, lots of cases are made to fit the latest Paperwhite, which is what we based this list on. However, you can normally find similar designs of the case, just bigger or smaller.

99% of the time the case will state the model of Kindle it’s compatible with. If you’re going for a more general eReader case then you’ll need to check the diagonal dimension as this is what companies will use.

What are the most popular Kindle covers?

Generally, the most popular Kindle covers are 'folio' cases, which operate similarly to a book, with a hard cover on either side that you can flip open and closed. This is because they are solid and very good at protecting your device from accidents—and, they look good.

When it comes to where to buy the most popular Kindle covers, most customers tend to purchase options from Amazon itself, given that that's where Kindles are from. Even the best Kindles occasionally have their wobbly days and sometimes, turning it on and off ( a classic method) doesn't work its magic. If you're still struggling with glitches, a black screen, or any other mishaps, experts will tell you that you need to reset your Kindle. To do this, you have three options.

You can do a soft reboot (restart), a hard reset (which works even if your screen is unresponsive), or a factory reset (wiping all data). I'll talk you through each simple step (because I have had to do this too many times for myself). I'll also let you know when it's time to call in the experts or even time to upgrade your eReader.

How to reset a Kindle — 3 methods to try

Now, for the task at hand. The three easy ways to reset your Kindle are:

• Check the battery of your device.
• Try a soft reset first.
• Factory reset the Kindle.

I'd recommend doing these in order, since they help to rule out more simple issues first. They also graduate in terms of complexity, so it makes sense.

1. Double check the battery

While the best eReaders have a long battery life, the battery running out is inevitable. Checking yours sounds obvious, but it is often a step that people overlook when their Kindle screen is black. 

Plug your device into a charging source. When it is fully charged, a green light should appear on the bottom of your Kindle. You will see an amber light if it isn't charged. If you find that you are unable to charge your device, it may mean that the charging cable or the battery itself is damaged and needs fixing or replacing. 

If you suspect your cable is preventing your Kindle from charging, you can try plugging in the micro USB cable that you use for your tablet or smartphone – often they will be compatible. If this isn’t an option, there are plenty of chargers for all models of Kindle available from Amazon and all good electrical retailers.

If this fails, the battery itself could be the problem. There are a number of video tutorials online showing you how to fit a new battery yourself, but unless you are a technician, we would really advise leaving this particular task up to the experts – see the bottom of this article for advice on how to do this. 

2. Try a 'soft reset'

A soft reset is a fancy rebranding of the age-old 'have you tried turning it off and on again?' trick that seems to work for even the most complex technology. Essentially, all you need to do is fully power it off and then turn it on again and most problems should resolve themselves. There are lots of reasons why this might happen: your Kindle might have needed to update, the battery might have needed to reset, and it could be caught in a bug loop.

If you ask Amazon how to reset a Kindle, they'll give you the soft-reset as a default method to try. Amazon says 'like any piece of technology, your Kindle might misbehave from time to time. This probably won't happen often (or at all), but if it does, a so-called soft reset or reboot can resolve many issues). 

Here is how to soft reset a Kindle:

• Flip open your Kindle cover, and press and hold the power button (this is usually on the bottom of your device, but may be on the back) until the power menu appears. Then, press restart. Alternatively, if you press and hold the power button and your screen goes blank, hold the button.
• Continue to hold down for a count of 40, then release.
• After a few seconds, your Kindle should automatically begin rebooting. Don’t worry if the screen flashes during the process. This is normal.

The soft reset won’t wipe any of your data or mess up your settings, so it’s perfectly safe to do as often as you need.

3. Factory reset your device

If your Kindle battery is fully charged, and the device is still freezing after doing a soft reset, it may be worth wiping the slate clean by restoring it to its factory settings.

Before committing to a factory reset, it might be worth quickly checking with Kindle Support to ensure there are no other steps you can take. 

From the home screen of your Kindle select 'Menu', then 'Settings'. From there take the option to 'Reset device'. These steps may vary, depending on which model of Kindle or tablet you are using. Look for the three vertical dots in the top-right of your homepage if you are unsure, as these should link directly to your settings.

Be warned: a factory reset does remove all the content from your device, but you will be able to re-download your apps, free eBooks, and your best eBook titles from the Cloud, or directly from your Amazon library. It's worth noting though that your WiFi details and any parental controls you had set up will need to be entered again. 

As a side note, if you ever decide to sell your Kindle or it gets stolen, you'll also want to do a factory reset to clear all your content and personal information.

What to do if all else fails

If you have tried all the steps above and to no avail, there are two more options to help you get your Kindle back to working order:

First of all, you can seek professional help through the official Kindle Digital Services and Device Support page. Here you will find a full library of help topics, forums where you can ask other Kindle users and Amazon staff for advice on how to reset a Kindle, with dedicated user guides for every type on the market. If your device is under warranty, you will be able to contact Amazon Customer Services and arrange for a local technician to carry out any repairs.

Why is my Kindle frozen? 

There are a couple of reason you may be experiencing issues with your Kindle freezing. One of the most common reasons and the one that can be fixed easiest is that your Kindle is running out of power. When your device has significantly low power, it reduces the power going to the main processor therefore causing it to freeze and malfunction. 

Another reason your Kindle might have frozen is that it may be due an update. If you've not updated your Kindle's firmware in a while, the device may be suffering from bugs that have been resolved in the latest update. When you've successfully got it un-frozen using one of the aforementioned steps then check your settings for the newest update and download it. 

Your Kindle may also be suffering from memory issues. Kindles are designed to only store so much data so if they're reaching their max capacity you may start to see some slowness and eventual freezing. If this is the case, it might be time to clear out some of the old books you no longer need or want to read. 

Freezing may also occur when using the web browser feature on your Kindle, the devices don't have much processing power so something like being on a web browser can slow its functioning speed down. 

How do I reset an unresponsive Kindle?

If the touchscreen of your Kindle isn't responding, your screen is frozen, or it's generally working slowly, you can re-set the Kindle using the buttons. Amazon says to 'press and hold the power button until a power dialogue box appears or the screen goes blank. Continue holding the power button for 40 seconds, then release.' It almost sounds too simple, but it works for resolving a lot of issues.

How do you hard reset your Kindle?

A hard reset is also known as a factory reset. It's the last of the three methods that we recommend trying, since it will wipe all the data on your Kindle. To do a hard reset and reboot, you'll want to go into your settings, tap on Device Options, tap Reset (or Reset Device), confirm that you want to reset your Kindle and then it will do the rest for you.

Why is my Kindle stuck on waking up?

If your Kindle is stuck on waking up and it's not being very responsive, the problem is most likely a rest of old, out-of-date software. You'll need to reboot your Kindle, so hold down the power button for 40 seconds, let go, and wait for it to reboot. This should solve your problem. Like any laptop, you can't leave your r-reader in 'sleep' forever.

How do I know if I need a new Kindle?

If you've tried all three methods for how to reset a Kindle and yours still isn't responsive, it might be coming to the end of its life.
