Finding reliable activewear can feel like a never-ending quest, particularly as our bodies and wardrobe needs change. To see if Lululemon's high-waisted leggings truly live up to their premium reputation, we asked a member of our trusted reader Tester Network, Facey Williams, to put them through their paces. We wanted an honest, real-world assessment from someone whose busy daily life demands kit that performs as well on a wet dog walk as it does in a high-impact fitness class.

First impressions: quality you can feel

Fresh out of the packaging, the quality of these leggings was immediately apparent. Unlike cheaper alternatives that can feel thin, flimsy, or overly synthetic, the fabric has a reassuring substance to it.

"My first impression after unpacking them was how lovely the fabric felt; they felt like really beautiful quality," Facey notes. "The waistband is double thickness, so it sits incredibly well on the waist without ever feeling restrictive or digging in."

For women over 40, a waistband that sits flat without cutting into the midriff is often the holy grail of activewear design, and Lululemon hits the mark here.

Fit and design: a welcome confidence boost

Many of us look for activewear that offers a bit of gentle sculpting and support to boost our confidence, whether we're heading to a gym class or running errands. Facey found that the fabric delivered an incredibly supportive, contouring fit that moved well with her body.

"As soon as I put them on, they felt a bit like a second skin and they moved with absolute ease," she says. "They made me feel so supported when I wore them and they felt quite flattering, as they held in my stomach and bottom without feeling compressed."

Ultimate test: do they stay put?

There is nothing more frustrating than having to constantly hike up your leggings mid-run, or feeling the waistband roll down the moment you bend over. Thanks to the ultra-high rise and a clever, subtle internal adjustable band, these workout leggings stayed firmly in place throughout Facey’s packed schedule.

"They didn't rub and didn't ride up or down," Facey explains. "The waistband was brilliant because it is genuinely high-rise. It didn't budge when I was bending or stretching, meaning I didn't have to keep heaving them up when I was out and about."

Tested during an unpredictable British summer – which included both glorious dry spells and a few inevitably damp dog walks – the performance was entirely consistent. The fabric offers an exceptional amount of stretch, allowing for total freedom of movement during high-flexibility exercises like ballet and high-impact sports like tennis, all while remaining highly breathable.

Pockets, too!

Most workout leggings fall short when it comes to practical storage, often featuring tiny pockets that barely fit a house key. Lululemon has mastered the utility aspect here, providing deep, sleek pockets – and several of them.

"Most leggings I have worn do not have sufficient pockets, so this was an aspect I thought was incredibly useful," says Facey.

She found the pockets were easily deep enough to hold a smartphone and a heavy bunch of keys securely against the leg without sagging. Facey even put them to the test on the court:

"I really liked the pockets, and they were even big enough to hold a tennis ball securely and then snap back to being completely flat against the leg afterwards."

A small, sleek pocket at the back of the waistband also provides the perfect spot for carrying a bank card or coffee loyalty card.

Wash, wear and longevity

Premium activewear needs to withstand frequent laundering, and these leggings passed the durability test with flying colours, retaining their shape and stretch perfectly. However, Facey noticed a specific quirk that you'd only discover after genuinely living with the product.

"I washed the leggings after several uses, and when they were line-dried, I noticed they looked quite creased," she explains. "But there’s no need to panic – as soon as I put them on, the creases completely disappeared, and they looked brand new again."

They also dry remarkably quickly, which is ideal if you want a quick turnaround between workouts.

The verdict: are they worth It?

If you are looking to update your fitness wardrobe with a pair of leggings that look as good as they perform, these easily earn their keep. While they sit firmly at the investment end of the market, our tester found that they comfortably outperformed other premium brands she usually relies on.

"They felt more supportive than other leggings I have, including my Sweaty Betty ones," Facey concludes. "Having tested these Lululemon leggings, I completely understand why they are priced as they are. Yes, they are an investment, but I would genuinely say they are better than the other high-end leggings I already own. I would absolutely buy them myself."

You might have seen - leopard print has made a big comeback. The once-divisive print is back and bigger than ever, so of course it's made its way onto our gym leggings, sports bras, and trainers too.

Now, I understand why you might be hesitant about leopard print activewear. Some see leopard print as a 'neutral' for workout leggings and one of the black activewear alternatives, whereas others will gawk at the suggestion of wearing something so bold to the gym. I would have fit into the second category before I spotted runner and podcaster Jenny Falconer sporting the look and a throwback shot of Sienna Miller styling it out. Oti Mabuse is also a fan of leopard print activewear. So it's safe to say, it's here to stay in our workout wardrobe for 2025.

Brands like Sweaty Betty, Lululemon, Bravissimo, and Mountain Warehouse have jumped on board the leopard print trend too, and we've scoured the internet to find the best picks of them all.

What colours complement leopard print activewear?

Classic black or white works really well with leopard print, which is why adding something as simple as a print sports bra or a pair of leopard print leggings to your existing gym is an easy way to refresh your look for 2025, says Caroline Parr, woman&home's digital fashion editor. " On-trend colours like rich burgundy or mocha mousse will complement animal print perfectly too," she says. You can also work out which colour suits you best with our colour analysis test.

"The other option if you're a big animal print fan like myself is matching leopard pieces. In your everyday wardrobe, you might not feel confident enough to layer leopard on leopard, but the rules are very different when it comes to activewear," she says.

Does leopard print hide sweat?

Darker colours - like black, brown, and deep shades of green, blue, and burgundy - hide sweat better than lighter shades so sticking to leopard print in these tones will be safest if you're planning on an intense workout like running.

However, leopard print may make sweat less obvious if the pattern is closely knitted together as well - like in the Next Animal Balance Sports Yoga Leggings.

On opening my activewear drawer, I'm greeted by a sea of black leggings, tops, jackets, shorts, running belts, and who knows what else. Finding what I need in the collection, even when it's organised, is a workout in itself.

As woman&home's digital health editor and a keen runner, cyclist, and gym goer, it's fair to say I spend almost as much time in my best workout leggings as I do in my jeans and jumpers. But where I try to have pops of colour in my regular wardrobe, I've exclusively stuck to black in my sportswear.

Black gym leggings are my favourite for two reasons: they hide sweat and look great, flattering, seamless and low-key. You can pair them with whatever shade of running or walking shoes you like as well. But having to shuffle through my drawer of ages is a clear sign I need to diversify.

But after a lengthy scroll through my favourite brands - including classic British sportswear brands like Sweaty Betty and Gymshark - I wanted to make sure I was still going to get the benefits of wearing black. So, I spoke to Amelia Lohan, a garment technologist at MP Activewear - a brand I've worn for years - and woman&home's very own digital fashion editor, Caroline Parr.

Alternatives to black activewear

What colours hide sweat just as well as black does? "Browns, darker blues, and greens are excellent choices for gym wear if you're looking to minimise the appearance of sweat as the deep tones help conceal moisture," says Lohan. "Fabrics with a marl pattern can also help disguise sweat."

1. Brown

What's more, brown is set to be the season's colour, says our fashion editor Caroline. "Mocha mousse is set to be huge for 2025, and it's a much softer alternative to classic black," she says. "Burgundy still seems to be going strong too, and will complement chocolate and coffee shades really well."

2. Dark blue

"Deep shades of blue and navy are such a versatile base, especially when it comes to activewear," Caroline agrees. "Don't be scared to mix it with other colours (yes with black too!), and watch as it becomes your new favourite neutral. I tend to find dark blue a really calming colour as well - perfect for an evening yoga session."

3. Dark green

Less popular than deep blue but more popular than brown, deep green is a "practical pick for activewear," Caroline says. "But it's ideal for anyone who wants to mix things up a little."

It's not just colour that matters when you're hiding sweat and looking for a sleek, seamless silhouette. Pattern makes a big difference too, says Lohan. "Marled seamless and cut-and-sew leggings are great options too. The blend of different colours woven into the fabric helps disguise sweat, making it less noticeable during workouts," she says. You might even like to try leopard print activewear for something a little different.

These patterns, even in lighter colours, can do a good job of hiding sweat as well. "Petal pink is one of the spring/summer fashion trends to watch out for," notes Caroline.

However, at the end of the day, "lighter colours do tend to show sweat more prominently," says Lohan.

Trialling a new activewear brand is always a risk - will it be supportive enough? Sweat-wicking? Look as good on the body as in the store? Unlike many other clothing items, you can't really see how workout leggings, tops and running shorts are going to fair up until you're sweating in them - and by that point, it's too late to return them if they're not up to scratch. 

I'm a big fan of Lululemon and Sweaty Betty activewear. I also own my fair share of leggings from Gymshark, Adidas, Nike, and New Balance. But could there be a new contender to add to the mix? I spent two weeks exclusively working out in Uniqlo's activewear range to find out. 

Uniqlo activewear review

Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism Leggings

I have never been so quick to recommend a pair of leggings to my friends. After wearing the Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism Leggings on three runs, through two gym sessions, and on a casual walk (with a wash in between, of course), I can comfortably say they cover all the bases when it comes to comfort, compression, and versatility.

The compressive fit was the first thing I noticed after putting them on. These aren't the perfect pair for a gentle yoga session - the Lululemon Align leggings do have them beat here - but they are suitable for anything a little more dynamic. Compression will depend on sizing but I opted for my regular size and found they offered a light layer of support, helping me feel secure in my workouts and supported with a high-waist band and firm stitching down the sides. While many workout leggings have a drawstring in the waistband, which I've found useful in the past for finding the right fit, these didn't need one.

Length-wise, I reckon these leggings would work for anyone between 5'5 and 6'0 (as I am). As a taller woman, I'm used to leggings that just about reach the bottom of my calf - these grazed my ankle, which is all I can ask for in standard sizing. For those smaller, these leggings will come to full-length, making them an excellent choice for wetter and cooler autumn conditions in the next few weeks.

There's a pocket on either side of the leg - one more than on the Sweaty Betty Power leggings, our top choice for the best workout leggings with pockets - to store your phone and other must-have items. Thanks to the leggings' compressive fit, I found they were secure even during runs and HIIT workouts. For those who primarily work out at the gym, I'd say it's a must-have feature to avoid putting your phone down on the dirty floor or sweaty benches. 

As noted, the leggings come in a variety of colourways. I would suggest going for a darker shade if you're planning on sweating a fair amount as I found that sweat came through through the material pretty quickly. For me, this was almost unnoticeable until I looked up close as I opted for the black colourway but it's something to bear in mind if you're going for a lighter colour.

While some workout leggings can stay damp hours after a workout, meaning you have to go straight home after a session and throw them in the wash, I found the Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism Leggings dried very quickly after my visit to the gym - and after washing them - thanks to the breathable material that characterises the Airism range. If I had to go straight to brunch or work after exercising, these would be my leggings of choice.

Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism Active Shorts

Though the weather may be turning and shorts season is drifting away, I like to keep a pair of biker-style workout shorts on hand for indoor workouts at the gym (where the heating is inevitably on too high) and as an additional layer to wear under my looser shorts when out on a run. 

The Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism Active Shorts are very similar to the leggings - shorter, but not too short. At just over seven inches on the inseam, they came down to my mid-thigh, making them long enough to feel covered and supported, without being so long they touched my kneecaps and made my legs a funny shape with the compressive fit. As I am taller than average though, they will be longer on those shorter.

The pockets are a big plus in these shorts, given that it's rare to see biker-style workout shorts with one pocket on either side of the leg. I would have liked to also see a smaller pocket in the waistband of the leggings and the shorts though, as I find this useful for smaller essentials like keys and cards.  

Much like the leggings, the Ultra Stretch AIRism Active Shorts have a high-waisted fit with a flattering waistband that supports and compresses (without being uncomfortable) during any workout. The material around the waistband didn't seem to be as thick as on the leggings for some reason though, so you will see a knicker line if you don't wear a thong. There is a risk of camel toe too, as the shorts - unlike the leggings - have a seam construction at the front. 

Uniqlo Ultra Stretch AIRism T-Shirt

The Uniqlo Airism t-shirt has gone viral in recent years for being one of the best white t-shirts for casual wear. So, it should be no surprise that the Uniqlo activewear version of the top is equally as well reviewed.

It's a basic top, one that I found worked well for running and gym workouts, but also yoga and Pilates classes, which I did two of while wearing this top. As I was wearing this during one of the warmer weeks this year, I can confidently say it fairs well in sweaty conditions and as a lighter layer. And while the sweat did show through after my runs and workouts - even in the black colourway - only a very close eye would be able to see it, which is very impressive for a workout top. 

Like all Airism t-shirts, this one feels lightweight and thin against the skin, making it a perfect layer to wear underneath a sweater or jacket this autumn. However, my durable (read high-support) sports bra was noticeable underneath, which was a little off-putting but the compressive, slightly tighter fit was responsible for this. Next time, I'd size up for a more comfortable fit. For an even looser fit, perhaps for yoga or Pilates, I'd suggest the AIRism Seamless V Neck Longline T-Shirt.

I would also say this top could be worn casually as well - between the gym and home or even through the day, if you like a closer-fit top for casual wear. There's nothing about it that necessarily screams 'for exercise only', making it another versatile piece in any workout wardrobe.

UNIQLO Ultra Stretch AIRism Full-Zip Jacket

If you've been eyeing up the Define jacket from Lululemon but the price tag is a little beyond your budget, you'll love the UNIQLO Ultra Stretch AIRism Full-Zip Jacket. Side by side, they look (and feel) very similar. 

I've seen many Lululemon alternatives for this jacket in recent years as brands like H&M, Gymshark and MyProtein, jump on the bandwagon for hip and waist-defining style. At more than half the price though, this is the best alternative of the lot.

The UNIQLO Ultra Stretch AIRism Full-Zip Jacket has the same compressive feel as other pieces in the range, with a long body that reaches the hips, long-sleeves with thumb holes for keeping the sleeves in place, and a lightweight feel that makes it a great throw-on layer as the temperature cools. 

Two pockets with zips can store valuables like your phone, however, you'll need to keep your jacket zipped up to stop these swinging around when you're on the move though as the jacket has limited structural support when unzipped. After a few times wearing it, I just stuck to putting my keys and card in the pocket of my jacket and put my phone in the leggings or shorts pocket for more security and flexibility in my outdoor workout.

As the jacket is designed to accentuate the hips and waist, the fit is designed to be tighter than other workout jackets and throw-on pieces so size up if you want an option with a little more breathing room.

What is UNIQLO Airism? 

Per the brand's own definition, Airism is "comfort conditioning technology", which means the material is made from thin fibres that absorb and disperse water vapour on the body. Essentially, it's great for wicking away sweat and keeping you cool in warm conditions - or during a sweaty workout. 

It's also a quick-drying material, so you can trust that you'll leave the gym looking fresh - even if you don't feel it. 

What is the difference between Heattech and Airism? 

If you've been browsing the UNIQLO website, you may have seen the brand's other temperature-regulating range: Heattech. This range is designed to do the opposite of Airism by keeping you warm in the winter. 

With autumn on the way, Heattech may be the collection to be thinking about if you're planning to slip on your walking shoes and get outdoors. 

UNIQLO vs Lululemon

UNIQLO and Lululemon are very different brands so it's tough to draw a comparison - unlike the Sweaty Betty vs Lululemon debate. While UNIQLO caters for just about every area of life from office wear to pyjamas, Lululemon is a specialist in activewear (even going so far as to sponsor the Canadian team during the Olympics and Paralympics in recent years) and more casual wear. 

However, some points of comparison can be drawn specifically looking at the Lululemon and UNIQLO activewear.

In the time I've had one pair of Lululemon leggings, I could have had several pairs of cheaper ones, working out to the same cost in the end.

As woman&home's digital health editor, I've worn close to a hundred pairs of the best workout leggings over the years. I exercise at least three days a week, whatever the weather, so I can confirm these are great choices for a full spectrum of workouts. Other members of the team also shared their tried and tested favourites, covering all types of workouts from running and hiking to yoga and Pilates.

Every pair of leggings included in this round-up was tried and tested and put through their paces for a range of workouts. To be included, each pair had to meet three essential criteria: they had to be durable, squat-proof (not see-through!), and comfortable to wear. A pair of black gym leggings that ticks all the boxes, all for under £30? Meet the Uniqlo AIRism Leggings, our top pick. These full-length leggings have a mid-high waist for good support, two pockets, and are super comfortable.

I've worn these leggings on a hike paired with my favourite walking shoes, on a 5km run, and through several gym workouts and can confidently say they work for every one of these exercises. The waistband isn't so high that I felt too compressed, but it was supportive enough to stay up while running, despite not having a drawstring waistband like the Sweaty Betty Power leggings. The pockets are also roomy, running fairly far down the leg.

They are especially good for outdoor and winter workouts as they truly are full-length. I'm slightly taller than average and was pleasantly surprised when they came down to just above my ankle. Different lengths are available, too, however.

In terms of downsides, my only real gripe was that the material isn't particularly sweat-wicking, unlike the Gymshark Vital leggings, for instance. This meant that during my more intense gym workouts, I saw the damp patches around the waistband. However, the black colour hid these well, and I doubt anyone else would have noticed. And, in fact, the sweatier they got, the more like a second skin they felt, so they stayed comfortable during my sessions.

When it comes to the best gym leggings with pockets, few can compete with the Nike Go Women's leggings that come with six useful pockets, each made in a different style (zip closures, folding fabric, tight elastane openings) and all strategically stored within the legs and waistband of the leggings. I find these particularly useful when I'm at the gym as I can store my phone and locker key safely - I've even managed to get a pair of lifting straps in the side pockets. They'd also be handy for outdoor workouts as they can store all the essentials.

However, in their own right, these are excellent black gym leggings. Often, at the end of a sweaty workout, my other gym leggings with pockets will leave a residue on my phone. While that's completely natural, that's not the case here, as the material is thick enough to keep sweat residue away from whatever's in the pockets. However, the material still feels soft yet supportive, with moisture-wicking properties that prevent overheating.

These leggings also come with a high waistband and a drawstring cord for additional support around the middle, making these a great option for outdoor runs, hikes, and walks as well.

While I have no doubt these will stand the test of time, with their squat-proof design and innovative features, they are expensive leggings. Retailing at £99.99, they might only be worth the investment if you'll really get use out of them - either now, or in years to come.

The best black gym leggings for cardio

The Sweaty Betty Power Gym Leggings are the best black gym leggings for cardio enthusiasts, in my opinion. The design features a secure cord for tightening the waistband, they're supportive, and they wick away sweat very easily. They only feature three pockets, but this is ample for most workouts and you can easily store keys, your phone and a credit card. The back pocket is also zipped, so it is more secure than others.

These also come in multiple black colourways, so there's plenty of choice. My favourite is the black camouflage (pictured). The patterned colourways often also get reduced in the Sweaty Betty sale, so it's worth keeping an eye out for them.

I've had my Sweaty Betty Power Gym Leggings in black for over two years and work out in them at least once a week - and I'm yet to see any sign of colour fading. The polyamide elastane fabric is durable while still feeling soft and lightweight. When sweaty, they develop a second skin-like feel that means they hold to the body comfortably.

They aren't as high-waisted as other options on this list, but they do come up to the belly button, offering enough support for running, walking, gym workouts, and any kind of exercise where you're jumping up and down, and need your leggings to go with you. The drawstring in the waistband offers additional reassurance.

Not exactly a gripe, but one thing to be aware of with the Sweaty Betty Power Gym leggings is the seam construction on the front of the leggings, which can give you a bit of a camel toe if you pull them up too high. You have been warned.

The best black gym leggings for yoga

Lululemon is one of the biggest names in the fitness industry for a reason. There are three main collections, but Align is the best for yoga, Pilates, barre, and other low-impact workouts.

The materials and four-way stretch are the highlights, offering a weightless and buttery-soft feel against the skin, so soft and comfortable, I sometimes forget I'm wearing anything at all. They also have a higher waist compared to the Sweaty Betty Power leggings and come without a drawstring, so there's less compression against the stomach, making them a good option for lower-impact workouts.

The Align High-Rise 28" Leggings are also a favourite of Kerrie Hughes, woman&home's digital editor. "These are my go-to everyday leggings. I wear these everywhere, from rowing and CrossFit workouts to casual Sunday mornings. They're so comfortable, and the quality means I never have to worry about them being see-through," she says. And while these leggings sit towards the upper end of the price spectrum, you can often find alternative Align darker colourways in the Lululemon sale.

However, these suffer from the same problem as the Power leggings: they have a front seam. They also highlight the difference between yoga leggings and running leggings. As they don't have a drawstring waistband and the super soft, lightweight feel means they are more prone to slipping down than other black gym leggings, it's best to opt for the Gymshark Vital or Uniqlo AIRism leggings instead.

The best high waisted black gym leggings

With a waistband that sits slightly higher than many, the Gymshark Vital Sculpt leggings are a top pick if you're looking for a flattering fit that offers more support above the waist. I have two pairs of these and they're in my regular rotation for workouts, simply because they're so easy and practical to slip on, they don't bunch up, and they feel so lightweight I barely notice they're there. They also have a subtle bum scrunch design, which is a nice addition for some, but might put others off.

For Tamara Kelly, woman&home's digital lifestyle editor, they're a winner for similar reasons. "They are a tight fit, but with that, they offer a shaping element that makes you feel sculpted, which is a valuable asset when you feel somewhat exposed during exercise. The fabric is thick enough to hold you in and feel supported but lightweight enough to feel comfortable and not cause you to overheat."

When it comes to the best black gym leggings, these Gymshark leggings lack the variety of black colourways offered by brands like Sweaty Betty. However, as Tamara says, if you know how to wash gym clothes, these leggings will last a long time. "After a year of washing my leggings every week, the colour has stayed and they are still as good as new."

The most comfortable black gym leggings

Comfort is key when it comes to working out, whatever your activity. Rich in colour and super soft in material, these H&M SoftMove leggings are one of the best Lululemon alternatives around - and possibly the most comfortable leggings I've ever owned.

While I wouldn't wear these for high-intensity activities like running, spinning, or HIIT workouts as they tend to collect sweat marks, they are perfect for gym workouts like strength training, yoga for beginners, and a full-body Pilates workout. The high, wide waistband offers good support and the length stretches to the ankle, even if you're a little taller than average (like me). They are also lightweight and breathable, and they sit on the lower end of the price spectrum compared to other popular leggings from Sweaty Betty and Lululemon, making them a great buy for those on a budget.

I'm normally a size large in leggings and didn't find the need to size up. However, reviews from other verified buyers have noted this as a common problem, so it's worth checking out the size guide before buying.

The M&S Go Move High Waisted 7/8 Gym Leggings are a great pair of black workout leggings if you're looking for a pair under £30 - and our top pick isn't for you. At 7/8 length, these are particularly suitable for anyone 5 foot 6 inches and under, and anyone looking for a shorter style for whatever reason. Otherwise, they are more or less the same as full-length gym leggings.

I've had my M&S Go Move 7/8 leggings for several months, although I wore them more during the warmer spring and summer months. They work for the gym best, I believe, whether that's Pilates every day or spinning a couple of times a week. The have a high-waisted fit reaches just above the belly button and a drawstring waistband adds support during cardio workouts, which I love. Although, the back pocket has a zip that I found digs slightly into the lower back when lying down on a mat if not positioned correctly, so it's perhaps not the best pair for yoga mat workouts.

I've found them to be quick-drying and they wick away moisture just as well as some of the more premium options. They're also very breathable, so I don't feel myself overheating during sweaty workouts, which is a bonus.

It's worth noting, however, that the M&S Go Move High Waisted 7/8 Gym Leggings do come up a little small. When buying leggings with a shorter leg, this is definitely something to be aware of - otherwise you could end up with capris. I noticed it with my pair, needing to size up from my regular 12 to a 14, and other verified buyers have said the same thing.

The best black gym leggings for sculpting

While all the best black gym leggings are going to have an effect that makes you look slimmer and taller, as darker colours draw attention away from the body and to the head, hands, and feet, the block panelling on these TruePurpose Optime Training 7/8 Leggings work to sculpt the thighs, hips, and glutes. So, if you're looking to create a sculpted silhouette with your pick of the best black gym leggings, these are the best choice.

Above all else though, the TruePurpose Optime Training 7/8 Leggings made it onto my list as they are some of the most comfortable gym leggings I've ever worn. They have a four-way stretch and seamless design that has a second-skin-like feel when the leggings get sweaty, meaning they get more comfortable as you get uncomfortable. The high waistband is secure and supportive, with full coverage up to the base of the ribs, and small vents in the legs mean I never overheat.

Like other leggings on the list, the Adidas by Stella McCartney range is produced with 100% recycled materials, making them a great option for those looking to be more sustainable in their activewear choices.

While not available with Prime Delivery, the CRZ YOGA Women's Workout Leggings are for sale on Amazon almost exclusively. As well as a standard black colourway, much like lululemon and Sweaty Betty, CRZ YOGA offers unique black designs like tie-dye, marble, camouflage, and various shades of black in these leggings. So whether you want something to stand out in class or blend in, there's an option for you.

"I never thought I would say this about a brand from Amazon, but I love my CRZ Yoga leggings almost as much as my Lulus," says w&h Acting Digital Editor Kerrie Hughes. "They are unbelievably soft, comfortable and supportive. The black pair I own pass the squat test, but I would always opt for the quality of my Lulus on squat day, just to be on the safe side."

With sizes available between 6 and 16, there isn't a huge range of options available. There are also no longer or shorter length options. However, these leggings are just over £23 and one of the best lululemon alternatives you can buy, so they're a good option. CRZ Yoga Butterluxe leggings also come in a variety of colours, if you want to add a pop of colour to your workout wardrobe.

How we tested the best black gym leggings

• Durability: Each of the leggings listed in this guide was worn over several weeks, with several washes between wears, which is how we know the rich black colour of these leggings doesn't fade quickly. Some pairs, like the Sweaty Betty Power leggings and Gymshark Vital Seamles 2.0 leggings have a colour wash that's stood up to many years of wear and washes.
• Squat-proof: You want to feel secure and covered in any pair of gym leggings you own, given that they are tighter to the body than regular trousers. I wore each pair of these leggings to the gym, squatting and deadlifting without an issue. I've also worn them on several longer-distance runs and stand by the squat-proof, sweat-proof status I've given them.
• Comfort: Whether you're wearing your black gym leggings during a workout or on a recovery day, you want them to be supportive, while also being comfortable over at least two hours. I wore each pair of leggings for several hours at a time in different scenarios, from HIIT workouts to Sunday recovery brunches, to make sure the waistbands were comfortable, the seams scratchless, and the stretch was as good as the brand suggested.
• Availability: Every body is different, so it makes sense for brands to produce leggings in various sizes - including tall and petite ranges, with various leg lengths. When choosing my pick of the best black gym leggings, I ensured each had alternative options for different sizes where possible. Naturally, some leggings on the cheaper end of the price spectrum only offer one size.

Both brands have helped me to move my body to the best of my ability through sweaty HIIT sessions, chilly 5ks and yoga classes - workouts where I'm exercising with intensity or trying to relax and the last thing I want to be doing is tugging at my top or pulling up the waistband of my leggings for the umpteenth time.

1. Sizing

Both Sweaty Betty and Lululemon cater to different body shapes and sizes. Although, it's worth mentioning that not all items are available in every size. 

Most of Sweaty Betty's clothes come in a UK size 6 to 18 / 20, across the range of leggings, tops, jackets, and shorts. Lululemon is slightly broader in its core offering - with clothes running from a UK size 4 to 24. 

While Lululemon slightly has the edge, both brands also offer different lengths of workout legging to suit petite and taller women equally. The best leggings for me are the ones designed for more petite heights - at 5ft 4 I tend to find standard-length options from most brands bunch up. For taller women, standard lengths likely have the opposite, overly-cropped appearance. Fortunately, Sweaty Betty's leggings run from 17 to 27.5 inches and Lululemon's extend from 17 to 31 inches, so there's plenty of choice.

When it comes to sports bras, both brands are slightly more limited. At Sweaty Betty, the selection covers a UK size 30A  to 44E in most styles. At Lululemon, sports bras stretch from 30DD to 42DDD as standard. A G is the largest available - and just one bra comes in this cup size, up to a 38 back size. So, while woman&home reviewers rate the bras from both brands highly as some of the best high-impact sports bras, in the Sweaty Betty versus Lululemon debate, few from either brand are size-inclusive enough to be considered among the best sports bras for larger breasts.

2. Quality

After finding myself getting through cheaper gym wear items too quickly - £10 sports bras were falling apart and £20 leggings became baggy in just a few months - I concluded that it made more economical and environmental sense to buy more expensive items from Sweaty Betty and Lululemon less frequently, especially in the Sweaty Betty sale. 

It's an investment that's paid off. I have pieces from both brands made with such quality fabric and stitching that they have lasted years. The waistband stays supportive with wear and the seams hold up even after a million washes. Much like the best running shoes, you get what you pay for with activewear and either Sweaty Betty or Lululemon is a great choice for a long-lasting investment in your workout wardrobe.

3. Materials

Sweaty Betty and Lululemon have handily curated their ranges around various popular activities - such as running, yoga and the gym - with the materials tweaked accordingly. They have also ensured their items are supportive enough for various intensities of workout, with their sports bras divided into light, medium and high-impact options. 

While Sweaty Betty states that the materials used in all their ranges are 'technical, performance-enhancing, sweat-wicking, 100% opaque', at Lululemon they have come up with some jazzy names for various high-functioning fabrics - including Nulux, Everlux, Luxtreme, and Nulu - with an emphasis on comfort, sweat-wicking and longevity.

All of which brings peace of mind to someone like me who spends a lot of time in downward dog - being conscious of things getting a little, err, see-through - and who sweats more than the average person during strength training and cardio (which perfectly complements my bright red complexion). So, I trust both brands to deliver top-quality materials focused on support and comfort for any workout type. 

4. Colour options

My gym uniform is boring in that it is all black, which I like to think is as chic as it is time-saving when I'm running late to class. Both Sweaty Betty and Lululemon have some of the best black gym leggings around, so they cater to my plain gym wear preferences perfectly with plenty of neutral colourways. I love that both also keep their sleek logos minimal - but visible enough so you don't have to ask where the stylish woman in your Pilates workout class got her top.

However, in the debate of Sweaty Betty versus Lululemon leggings for those who like to be more adventurous and brighten up their sessions with colour and patterns, it's worth noting that the brands have slightly different aesthetics. Sweaty Betty generally tends towards bolder, more eye-catching designs with print and neon, and Lululemon prefers a classic, understated palette with earthy, pastel tones.

5. Returns policy

I've certainly been in a situation where I've been sure that I'm a particular size in gym clothes but, on delivery, discovered that I haven't quite got it right or I've compared sizes between regular and gym clothes. For example, I'm a size 10/12 bottoms in Zara, but a size 8 in Lululemon leggings.

The returns policy is essential for getting your hands on activewear that's the right fit if you don't have time to try it on in-store. Sweaty Betty, who has free standard delivery on orders over £75, has a generous 45-day window for returns. If you're a Sweaty Betty Insiders club member, there's a lower threshold for free delivery. Meanwhile, Lululemon might offer free delivery on all orders, but you've got a narrower 30 days to return items if your choices are not quite right.

6. Price

Sweaty Betty and Lululemon hold space in the same segment of the activewear market, with remarkably similar pricing across all their ranges. For example, a sports bra at Sweaty Betty will currently set you back between £35 and £75, while a comparable style at Lululemon is between £24 and £58 at present.

After a bargain without compromise? There is a Sweaty Betty sale and Lululemon sale frequently with discount items at various points in the year - such as on Black Friday. Additionally, Sweaty Betty has an Archive Sale of heavily discounted items no longer in their current ranges and Lululemon provides a similar offering in its We Made Too Much section.

Sweaty Betty Power 7/8 Gym leggings vs Lululemon Align High-Rise 23" leggings

As with any Sweaty Betty and Lululemon leggings review, it is important to note that what might work for one person might not be the right fit for another. The Sweaty Betty Power 7/8 Gym leggings and the Lululemon Align High-Rise 23" leggings are beloved items in my workout wardrobe. However, I've found some key differences between them worth noting.

The Sweaty Betty Power leggings pair will set you back £88 as standard - although you may find them cheaper on retail sites like Marks & Spencer, John Lewis, or even Amazon. They come in sizes XXS to XXL. I, of course, have them in black but there are 31 colour and pattern options - including 'green areca palm print' and 'pink scattered petal print'.  Meanwhile, the Lululemon pair - available in a UK 4 to 24 - are slightly cheaper at £78, but come in just 13 colour options - including 'peach bellini' and 'Belgian blue'.

Most important, to me, is the length. The Sweaty Betty pair are a 7/8 style (you can also get them in full length) - so they sit 24 inches long in the leg. However, I find that the Lululemon leggings at 23 inches are even more perfect for me as they land just above the ankle (you can also get them in 25, 28 and 31 inches). 

The Sweaty Betty leggings are designed to be versatile and worn for multiple kinds of workouts, and I really rate the sweat-wicking, quick-drying and breathable material. They also come with special seams intended to 'sculpt' the bum - a nice added touch. In contrast, the Lululemon leggings are designed specifically with yoga in mind (although I wear them for everything). They are made from 'weightless and buttery-soft' Nulu fabric, which I have to say is very lovely.

While both pairs tick so many of my boxes, each does have at least one downside. The Sweaty Betty leggings have side and back pockets that create annoying 'bulk' for me. This is the same with the internal adjustable drawcord, which I feel shouldn't be necessary if they fit correctly and are built to remain supportive. However, for others who wear the leggings running longer distances, these features make all the difference - the pockets negate the need for an arm or waistband pouch and the drawstring cord provides another level of support.

The Lululemon leggings should only be washed in the machine at 30 degrees (unlike the 40 degrees for the Sweaty Betty) which complicates my laundry situation. 

Is Sweaty Betty a good brand? 

One of the best British sportswear brands, Sweaty Betty started life in a boutique in London's Notting Hill in 1998. Since then it has grown into an international brand available online and in stores around the world. However, it still retains a feeling of quality over quantity in the activewear and athleisure offerings. It also comes with the added ethos of female empowerment in its messaging. 

It's an excellent brand for sports bras, a pair of the best gym leggings with pockets, gym wear, jackets, and even ski clothing with top-quality materials in every piece, sweat- and squat-proof constructions, and plenty of style options for every taste. 

Is Lululemon a good brand? 

Interestingly, the Lululemon story also began in 1998 - this time in Vancouver, Canada and with yoga mat workouts in mind. In the decades since, it has likewise expanded globally, with a flagship store on London's Regent Street. Their focus on technological advancements has created a series of cult classics and they have become an iconic fixture in the gymwear space.

It is equally an excellent brand for a pair of the best running shorts as yoga leggings. You can be sure that each piece is built to last, with wear-proof seams and stitching, buttery-soft and high-quality materials, and colourways for those who like to keep styles simple in their activewear rotation. 

Is one better than the other? 

There are so many similarities that it's difficult to weigh up Sweaty Betty versus Lululemon and come out with one on top. It's ultimately up to you and how you feel when you train. 

What unites them both is their blend of function and style. It's the attention to quality and detail that we should expect from all the activewear we choose, particularly at this end of the price spectrum.
