This left my body looking just like my body, but better. My waist was smaller, my thighs smoother and my bum perkier. I was most impressed by my new-found cleavage – all thanks to the padded, moulded cups and deep neckline.

For the best shapewear, you can't beat Spanx. And for this review, we've put the Spanx Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low-Back Mid-Thigh Bodysuit through it's paces with real-life testing. Our aim? To make sure it's not only comfortable to wear, but gets the job done.

I have trialled a wide range of shapewear, from bum-sculpting shorts through to high-waisted briefs, to find the very best shapewear on the market. In each review, I’ll be filling you in on how they look, how they feel and, most importantly, whether they’re worth spending your hard-earned money on.

First impressions

A full-length body with a built-in bra and thigh-honing shorts, I would describe this as serious shapewear. It’s almost overwhelming how many features this one body has, making it the ultimate all-in-one solution to myriad potential wardrobe dilemmas.

Working from the top down, the padded cups and plunging neckline work in tandem to create impressive cleavage, the adjustable back can be worn open or closed, while the slinky, stretchy fabric makes light work of lumps and bumps.

How comfortable is the Spanx Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low Back Mid Thigh Bodysuit?

Spanx Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low-Back Mid-Thigh Bodysuit specifications

- Composition: 51% elastane, 49% nylon

- Machine washable? Yes

As is expected with shapewear, this wasn’t a breeze to put on. The fabric has plenty of stretch to it but still put up a fight around my thighs and bum. Luckily, the beauty of a bodysuit is that you can use the shoulder straps to help hoick yourself into place.

Spanx classes this as a ‘level 2’ in terms of hold (they range from levels 1 to 3) and likens the feel to a ‘firm hug’. Having worn this Spanx bodysuit for an extended period of time, I’d be included to agree.

The fabric is stretchy enough for full flexibility of movement, but snug enough to keep everything in place. I liked this level of spill-proof security and felt I was sitting up straighter, and walking taller, when I had it on.

My only complaint would be that the wiring around the plunge is not entirely comfortable and dug in slightly when I was sitting down. It does help to keep the bodysuit in place, though, ensuring it lies low under even the deepest of V-necklines.

Shape and appearance

The Spanx Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low Back Mid Thigh Bodysuit certainly sits on the functional side of the shapewear spectrum as opposed to the sexy one, but it’s worth looking a little silly undressed for how good it looks beneath clothes.

It left my body looking just like my body, but better. My waist was smaller, my thighs smoother and my bum perkier. I was most impressed by my new-found cleavage – all thanks to the padded, moulded cups and deep neckline.

A well thought-out design beautifully executed, the raw-cut legs are the perfect finishing flourish, acting like a second skin to banish thigh bulge and VPL.

Unique features

Easy Access Gusset™

I first tried on my Spanx Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low Back Mid Thigh Bodysuit before reading the specifications, so imagine my horror when I thought I’d managed to rip the gusset on the very first use. It’s hard to overplay the relief I felt on realising this was all part of the design. Phew!

We all know that bodysuits and toilet breaks don’t mix, leaving you little choice but to completely strip off in the cubicle – something that’s not always practical, especially if you’re decked out in fancy-pants finery.

Solving this well-known problem, Spanx developed their patented Easy Access Gusset™. It essentially means the gusset is not fully attached to the bodysuit, so can be moved aside in order for you to use the loo.

5 ways to wear straps

Not content with smoothing our stomachs, bum and thighs in one swoop, there are five different ways to wear the straps on this versatile bodysuit. More guidance is available on their website, but thanks to the included clear straps and strap converter, you can plan to wear yours with traditional, criss-cross, halterneck, narrow-back or racer-back straps.

Low-back design

In my experience, it’s almost impossible to find a reliable bra solution for a low-back dress that doesn’t involve nipple covers, risking embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions or skipping a bra altogether. Stick-on bras have a frustrating tendency to migrate down your body and will only really stay in place under form-fitting tops.

Luckily, Spanx has found an easy solution in the form of this low-back body. Padded cups provide bust-boosting cleavage and security, while the shoulder straps and built-in body work together to keep your boobs firmly under wraps.

If you did want to close the back for extra support under a high-necked top, the removable back clasp makes it nice and easy to do so.

Washing instructions

An item this delicate will benefit from a hand wash, but if you’re short on time, it can be popped in the machine for a gentle cycle up to 30°C. It’s not suitable for tumble drying or ironing, so re-mould the cups and lay flat to dry to avoid misshaping it.

Value for money

This is a pricey investment, but one that will earn its keep in your wardrobe. The convertible straps, plunging neckline and full-body support more than justify the high-end price tag. Also, by combining underwear and shapewear in one cleverly crafted package, it’ll save you time and money compared with buying each item separately.

Sizing

The sizing is a bit of a headache, as it takes both your bra and dress size into account. I was lucky that mine slotted into the same size, but if you measure across two, order both to be on the safe side.

This may be more of a problem if you have a far bigger or smaller bust compared with the rest of your frame. If that’s the case, this style probably isn’t for you and I’d recommend buying a bodysuit you can wear with your own bra with instead.
