The Queen reveals she had braces as a child during visit to dental hospital

The Queen has revealed that she had wire braces as a child during a royal engagement.

While touring the dental specialist floor at the hospital, Her Majesty, 93, was shown a model with wire braces by Kerry Tilbury, one of the teaching nurses.

She said, 'I had wires, luckily it was a very long time ago.'

The Queen then met children who are receiving treatment and told one child who was having braces fitted, 'I think it's worth it, in the end.'

As well as the Queen, other royals including Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie and the Earl and Countess of Wessex's daughter Lady Louise Windsor have also had braces.

The new facility brings the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hospital together under one roof.

The hospitals are part of UCLH (University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), and more than 200,000 appointments will be carried out each year at the new facility.

The Queen's royal engagement, which occured on Wednesday, marked her first engagement in London since returning from her winter break in Sandringham last year.

The Queen returned on 11 February after an extended break with her husband, Prince Philip.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 98, who retired in 2017, remained behind in Sandringham.

Prince Philip now spends much of his time at Wood Farm, a farmhouse in located in the estate, as he enjoys the privacy it offers.
