Ladybird publishes a nostalgic collection of the greatest Ladybird covers of the last century
Whatever your age, the chances are that you remember reading a Ladybird book. For many of us, they played an ever-present role in childhood, teaching us everything we needed to know about the perils of swimming, the joy of telling the time and the all-essential basics of colours, numbers and words.
So it’s with a flurry of nostalgia that we learnt that Ladybird is commemorating 100 years of publishing by producing a special gift collection of 500 of the most memorable and striking covers from their archive.
Ladybird: A Cover Story spans 60 years of covers, with many of the best from the 1940s-1980s. Some books will be instantly recognisable, and many show just how much our culture has changed in a short space of time.
Today's kids might not be impressed by some of the more old-fashioned topics, but in an era of 3D blockbusters and iPad games, it's hard not to be touched by the naivety of this how-to guide.
Other covers make you wonder whether what's inside would pass today's health and safety standards. Does Out In The Sun include information about SPFs, for example?
Something tells us small children would still be fascinated to read about 'Danger Men', whatever they may be.
Ladybird started publishing books in 1915, and is known as one of the most iconic and trusted brands for children.
Ladybird: A Cover Story is published on 2nd October and is available from all good bookshops at RRP £14.99.
