Coachella these days is undoubtedly a fashion spectacle, with A-listers and influencers pulling out all of the stops to be the best dressed. But, back in 2013, it was a more casual affair with celebrity fits looking more akin to what regular people might wear to a music festival.

Case in point, Diane Kruger's Aztec shorts and graphic tee combo, complete with slouchy knee-high boots. This picture was taken at the H&M Loves Music kick-off event, but the actress was later pictured wearing it on the main grounds of the festival too.

Sienna Miller swapped her trademark boho festival fits for a slightly more preppy look at Glastonbury 2024.

Wearing a relaxed-fit Barbour jacket, white parachute trousers and cropped wellies, she cut a sophisticated figure - and was also well prepared for the spotty weather that weekend.

Knowing how to clean wellies is key to making your waterproof boots last for years. Rubber boots can be quite a big investment, and we put them through a lot of mud and rain thanks to our weather! Whilst some see a thick coating of mud as a medal, others like to keep theirs looking as pristine as the day they arrived.

The general advice when it comes to keeping your best wellies looking, well, their best, is regular upkeep. Hosepipe them off after a muddy walk, and occasionally use a conditioning spray for protection.

Although I might go for walks in the countryside, I come home to a flat in London, so a hosepipe isn't hugely practical. If you're anything like me you might take off your wellies, immediately store them and forget about them after every wear, letting the mud build up over time.

Which is where I'm at with three pairs of wellies in my household: a pair of Kate Middleton's favourites, the Le Chameau Vierzonord, some Barbour wellies and a pair of Hunter boots. Particularly the latter haven't had much (if any!) maintenance in years, so they were perfect to put to the test.

How to clean wellies - a step by step guide

Step 1: Prep

Different brands will have different advice on how to clean wellies, so always check the manufacturer of your boots.

Fill a washing up bowl full of warm water, and set out a big old towel. Brushing off mud can get a little flicky!

Give them a good shake and wipe away any big chunks of mud from the sole with kitchen roll.

Step 2: Clean the mud off

Perhaps this is obvious, but it turns out a key ingredient you need when cleaning wellies is elbow grease. I used the Le Chameau brush - first dry, and then with some water, and it is amazing to get into all those nooks and crannies. And my Hunter wellies had a lot of those with their buckles and logos! You really don't require any chemicals, just water and time. If anything, you can use a little soap on more stubborn areas.

An old toothbrush would also help with chunky cleated soles, but that's definitely more time-consuming that this impressive brush. It's actually very satisfying to see the mud melt away. In addition, I used a microfibre cloth on some trickier marks.

The process did make me realise quite how well the khaki coloured Le Chameau boots actually hide mud - it wasn't until I dipped the brush in water and saw the colour that I realised quite how muddy these boots were!

One of the pairs I cleaned even had white paint marks on, which came off with a bit of extra scrubbing. The wellies with the most worn-in mud required a couple of rounds of brushing with water, but it's really a matter of patience.

Step 3: Dry

Leave them to dry before you move on to protection spray. Rubber boots should air dry really quickly, and it's important to keep them away from direct sunlight or heat sources like radiators.

If your wellies ever get wet inside, stuff them with newspaper to help soak it up. Don't store them away until they're fully dry. Freezing cold temperatures can also cause issues so keep them indoors if you can.

Step 4: Spray and protect

To really get the most of your wellies, a silicone spray will help revitalise, rejuvenate and help long boots keep their shape. It will aid in keeping the rubber supple and weather-proof.

Simply spray it sparingly, and massage it in with a microfibre cloth. With a bit of luck, they should now look brand new!

Can wellies be washed in a washing machine?

Freelance Fashion Writer and self-confessed wellie pro Jayne Cherrington-Cook tells me her experience: "while I have been known to throw wellies in the washing machine, it’s not advisable.

"The wellies have always fared well, but a washing machine engineer once told me it can actually damage your machine. If you still feel inclined to do it, then make sure you remove insoles first and wash off any excess mud and debris as that can clog up your washing machine filter.

"Place them into a laundry bag – I use a pillowcase, which works just as well – and then put them on a low heat – cold or lukewarm is best. Too high can damage the rubber. I always use a small amount of detergent as well.

"However, I do feel nothing gets wellies quite as clean as with a good hose down and some manpower. I use a soft brush and some warm soapy water. One thing to remember is to make sure they dry out fully, otherwise you can get some horrible damp smells that just won’t go away! Stuffing them with newspaper and then placing somewhere warm (but not hot) such as an airing cupboard or by a window helps make sure they’re fully dry."

How do you get rid of smelly wellies?

First things first, always wear socks with your wellies to avoid smells. Jayne says: "If the smell is coming from the inside and you have a removable insole, then it’s time to replace that. I’ve also used bicarbonate of soda to help remove any odd smells. Just sprinkle it in the boot and let it sit overnight inside and let it sit overnight - it naturally absorbs odours.

"If that doesn't work, then they probably need a deeper clean. Remove the insoles and either replace or wash them. Then clean the inside of the boot with a mixture of vinegar and water. I mix it in a spray bottle and spray them thoroughly – the vinegar helps kill bacteria that cause odours. Let them dry completely. If you wear them before they're fully dry, you risk getting a lingering damp smell.

"To prevent smells in the future, storing them somewhere with good air circulation is key. I have mine stored outside in all weathers, upside down on a welly stand, and I’ve had no problems with weird whiffs!"

How long should a pair of wellies last?

The answer to this really does depend on how often you're wearing them, and what for. But it is true that really good quality brands will last longer.

Jayne agrees: "higher-end brands like Hunter or Le Chameau might last 5 plus years, while budget wellies might need replacing after a year of regular use. If you're wearing them daily for heavy gardening for example, you’ll probably need to replace them more frequently than if you just wear them occasionally for dog walks.

"Looking after them is also key for a longer life. Cleaning them regularly, especially after muddy walks, and letting them dry fully help keep them in tiptop shape. I also learnt the hard way that you need to keep them away from extreme temperatures. I kept mine outside during last summer’s heatwave and they cracked, so I now take them inside during the summer, when I wear them less."

With January finally over, we can look forward to the brighter and warmer days that are still to come in spring - but we're not out of the woods when it comes to rainy weather just yet, so we're taking a leaf out of Sarah Jessica Parker's drizzy day style book.

In December we saw BBC star Helen Skelton wear some glossy finish black wellies in a snap shared on Instagram, whilst Claudia Winkleman’s The Traitors outfits often include Hunter boots. Jessica’s olive green boots are perhaps the most classic colour and what instantly comes to mind when we think of traditional Wellington Boots. This shade is also far easier to wear than you might think, especially if you’re weighing up the choice of green or a minimalist black pair.

The earthiness of this tone of green makes it work so well with neutral colours as well as blue denim, making green wellies a stylish as well as functional pairing for your everyday favourite looks for rainy days or walks. The Olympian wore her boots with black leggings, an emerald green jumper and an olive green parka coat which was such a chic snow day outfit. Helen Skelton really is the queen of outdoorsy chic, and this latest bright and cosy yet elegant look filmed for her Channel 5 show On The Farm is no exception.

I tested these myself, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd find a pair of wellies that I'd be willing to replace my 15-year-old Hunter favourites with. How wrong I was!

They are undeniably beautiful, which isn't a word I ever thought I'd use about a practical item like wellies. What's more, they're super toasty. The bright blue neoprene lining will not only brighten up a grey rainy day, but it also keeps you impossibly warm.

I have a lively cocker spaniel who takes some convincing that it's time to go home whenever we're out walking, and the first time I wore these was on one of the coldest days of the year. Even with just a thin pair of socks on, they didn't rub in the slightest, and I was toasty warm.

The khaki colour is a winner for me (they're the wellies Kate Middleton wears), and although this royal-approved style doesn't come cheap, I can tell these sturdy wellies will last years.

The only thing I'd flag to anyone considering splashing the cash (pardon the pun!) is that if you have wide calves, I'd recommend shopping the wide calf section of the Le Chameau website, as these are very slim-fitting in my opinion. I couldn't wear anything more than leggings or skinny jeans with mine. There's also a jersey-lined version of the Vierzonord if you wear your wellies a lot in the summer months. The neoprene lining could get a little too warm!

Best fashion wellies

Hunter, the standout favourite Wellington brand, has been worn by many Royals from the late Queen to Princess Diana. More recently, Kate Moss has worn hers to Glastonbury, and they're a key part of Claudia Winkleman's Traitors outfits.

Deputy Fashion Editor Charlie Bell has been a fan of Hunter for years, and she says the Original Tall boots are truly worth the hype.

She says they offer great flexibility and support, and are very comfortable indeed. She tested hers on a long beach walk in Norfolk and reported that the Hunter Original tread pattern and grippy sole kept her sturdy on slippy surfaces. She would, however, recommend sizing up a little and wearing a thick sock in the winter, as they can be cold otherwise.

There are eleven different colours to choose from, as well as a glossy option, which Charlie opted for. She says they're just as sleek as a pair of knee-high boots, but with the added bonus of being completely practical too. They wouldn’t look out of place in the city or the countryside and will work from a wintry walk to a summer festival.

Best wellies for wide calves

With three kids, woman&home's Digital Editor Kerrie Hughes needed her wellies to be extremely convenient, practical and comfortable. She says she used to favour taller wellies, but more recently has found them to be restrictive in their movement, which isn't ideal when trying to keep up with a young family.

Best everyday wellies

I tried these myself, and whilst I thought I was pretty much covered on the wellies front with my Le Chameau boots, I realised there was space in my life for an easy-to-throw-on pair of waterproof boots that I could wear when I'm running out of the door with the dog for a quick walk in the local park, or even for popping to the shops on a rainy day. Seriously, what shoes are we wearing when it's torrential outside, but knee-high wellies feel OTT? Trainers get wrecked! Enter the Tully boots.

woman&home's Fashion Writer Molly Smith put these Joules wellies to the test, and as an avid dog walker living in the countryside, she was looking for some versatile wellies that would stand the test of time.

She tried a pair of chocolate brown wellies, which are very on trend for 2026, but they are also available in black, khaki or navy blue. Jayne Cherrington-Cook is a daily dog walker and considers herself to be a bit of a welly pro. She says she's learned from experience that wellies need to fit properly and shouldn't pinch or rub, and, just like with the best walking boots, she always makes sure to leave enough space for thick socks in colder weather.

How we tested the best wellies

Between six members of the woman&home team, we tested a variety of the very best wellies available on the virtual high street.

And when I say tested, I mean tested. Long dog walks in the countryside, trips to the seaside in the winter, muddy festivals, long hikes, freezing cold conditions: we've done them all, so you don't have to. We certainly haven't shied away from the muddiest terrain!

As with bras and trainers, we've put a lot of thought into how we test wellies so you can get the best overview when weighing up a wellie purchase. We considered the following factors:

• Comfort & fit - how comfortable are they on long walks? Do they rub anywhere or make your feet ache? Do they offer arch support? Are they tight on the calves?
• Style - how they look is just as important as how they feel. Wellies should excite you, not just feel like a practical piece you have to wear!
• Care & cleaning - to some, muddy wellies are something of a medal, but if you like to keep yours looking pristine, you want them to be as easy as possible to clean. Can you give them a quick hose down at the end of a walk, or do you have to dismantle them to get them looking as good as new?
• Longevity - all of the styles have been in our testers' wardrobes for months or even years. They've all lasted well to date, but we will, of course, update our findings should we experience any changes or issues.

We've also spent time thinking about features that matter to a wide variety of people. From tricky wide calves to having young kids who love splashing in puddles, everyone will want something different from their wellies.

How to choose the best wellies

Unlike trainers or bras, the majority of people only own one or two pairs of wellies. Which makes investing in a new pair an even bigger decision. Here are a few things to weigh up when reading all of our reviews:

• Price: how much do you want to spend? How often will you wear them? If you can afford to invest in the high-priced options on our list, you won't be disappointed with the quality. But you want to make sure you wear them enough to justify the splurge!
• Size: most websites have a size guide, and it's well worth taking the time to study it. Think about the time of year you'll be wearing your wellies most, the outfits you want to wear them with, and what socks you'd choose to wear underneath. Blisters are so often the product of poor fit. If you’ve got wide feet, squeezing them into standard wellies can feel like medieval torture. Unfortunately, many wellies only come in a standard width, so unless you shop at a specialist welly brand, the other option is to try out men’s boots, as these are often slightly wider than those designed for the female foot.

Finding Wellington boots for larger calves can be a frustrating experience. Traditional styles often pinch and squeeze, leaving calves uncomfortable and restricted. This isn't just an aesthetic issue; it can impact mobility.

“They pair well with everything from dresses and skirts to trousers, shorts and jeans, and are far easier to carry with you than their bulkier full-length counterparts.”

Most shorter wellies also come with the same technical benefits as the taller versions, making them a great choice for dog walks, commuting or a stroll in the country. For a leg-lengthening effect with shorter wellies, Miranda suggests choosing styles that end below your calf's widest point.

“If they do, you will end up highlighting this part and your legs will look heavier than they actually are,” she says. “There is a very simple way to get around this, and that is to layer the boots over a chunky sock or even a leg warmer, adjusted to the most flattering height.”

Ultimately, the best way to find the most comfortable wellies for you is to try them on and see how they feel.

Are expensive wellies worth it?

Celebrities sporting Hunter and Barbour might leave you wondering if a pricier pair is worth it. The answer, according to Miranda, hinges on your "wear it out" factor.

“I would simply consider how frequently you’ll be wearing them and calculate the cost per wear,” she says.

“If you are likely to wear them regularly and go for long walks in them, then the improved construction, support, durability - and not to mention style - of a more expensive pair will be worth it. If, on the other hand, they are something you intend to throw on once in a blue moon, then save your money for a piece that will provide more value in your collection.”

Our experts agree that Le Chameau will fare well on long walks. personal stylist and welly lover Lindsay Edwards cites the brand as a good choice and says “their quality and craftsmanship is second to none.”

Boots aren't just great for practical reasons, and the Princess of Wales proved how elegant a pair can be for the Christmas 2023 walkabout at Sandringham in a pair of navy Gianvito Rossi boots.

We're used to seeing Kate wearing Gianvito Rossi heels, and we spotted a perfect dupe to her favourite red pair from the designer in the past. 

For the colder season, the knee-high suede heels were a perfect complement to the Princess' all-blue outfit, which included a coat from one of her go-to designers, Alexander McQueen. With such a heavy coat and a monochrome blue look, the boots added a subtle touch of height.
