Duchess Sophie always delivers the best outfit inspiration when it comes to her looks for royal events - even one of her most understated Royal Ascot outfits is still stuck in our minds as an ideal wedding guest look.

The Duchess of Edinburgh became the first royal to ever wear a jumpsuit at Royal Ascot when, in 2019, she marked the event's newly approved dress code, which included women being able to wear jumpsuits.

With a cinched in waist and buckled belt, the jumpsuit boasted a plunging neckline that was offset by wide-sitting shoulders and 3/4 length sleeves. This was a little risky of a choice for Sophie, but the wide leg flared trousers, with front pleats adding even more movement to the flowing look, helped to balance out the more revealing bodice and solidify this look as one of our favourites Sophie has worn. It's such a great combination of comfort and style, and perfect for special occasions like weddings.

I often see floral dresses in soft, pastel shades but if Emilia Fox’s red blouse in Silent Witness has taught me anything it’s that she loves a pop of colour with her flower prints, especially red. I must admit, after seeing her BAFTAs look I might have been converted to colourful florals myself.

The red peonies weren’t too much but they definitely brightened up this maxi dress and made it feel very summery and fun. The green sleeves mellowed the scarlet slightly and the textured jacquard fabric was wonderfully elegant.

The neckline was a 40s-inspired V-shape and the puffed shoulders brought some subtle structure. Whilst I really love this silhouette, the main pull of a floral dress is the print, so it’s important to choose a shape that works for you and your style.

"Florals are such a timeless choice for occasionwear and we love the bold bloom print on Emilia's dress," says woman&home Digital Fashion Editor Rivkie Baum. "A style that will never date, floral dresses make for an excellent investment as they can be worn time and time again."

Her advice is to go for "midi-length designs and tea dress silhouettes to get the most cost-per-wear out of your chosen design, as these can be worn for all kinds of formal occasions".

If you’ve ever steered clear of botanical prints because you’re not sure what to wear with them, Rivkie has an easy suggestion that can be applied to any floral outfit.

"Use the print as the colour palette for your outfit, selecting shoes, bag and a hat in one of the colours from the floral design to really pull your ensemble together," she explains.

Alternatively, metallics work with most shades. Emilia Fox went for a pair of platform Wyse London Bella sandals in gold.

These had a chunky heel and a secure ankle strap, with additional straps over the front of the foot. The cushioned sole is also a handy addition when you’re wearing heels as high as these.

The actor completed her ensemble with an iconic Lulu Guinness Lips Clutch bag in a neutral white tone. Even at smarter occasions like a wedding or garden party, you can inject some personality into a formal outfit with your bags and shoes.

The Lulu Guinness bags are so fun, but any slightly more unique design can bring a playful edge to a floral dress look. Just keep to more pared-back colours if you’re going for something a bit more out-there, to ensure it’s still very wearable.

The Princess of Wales stepped out on her and Prince William’s 14th wedding anniversary in the Isle of Mull looking just as impeccably stylish as always. From her tailored Holland Cooper blazer to her Boden chambray shirt and brown skinny jeans, her smart-casual outfit was perfect for a breezy spring day in the Inner Hebrides.

It was also quintessentially *her*, but one thing about her ensemble caught my eye and was a little bit different for the future Queen. Kate was wearing two layered gold necklaces together as she and Prince William arrived at Aros Hall, a local community hub in Tobermory.

She doesn’t tend to double up on her jewellery like this too often and necklace stacks are a huge trend for 2025. They’re in-keeping with boho style which isn’t the Princess’ signature look, but she made it very much her own in Scotland.

Unless you are a big fan of a bold layered effect I’d recommend starting with simple, everyday pieces that work seamlessly together. This is exactly what the senior royal did and I noticed she was wearing a subtle gold chain necklace from Daniella Draper with her children's initials on.

Initial jewellery can have an unfair reputation for being a bit twee, but it very much depends on the design. The ‘G', 'C' and 'L' charms on Kate’s necklace were small and minimal, which gave it a more sophisticated edge.

This necklace was the shorter of her two jewellery pieces and the one below it had a disc pendant hanging from the plain gold chain. It was another Daniella Draper piece and Prince George, Charlotte and Louis' initials were engraved on the charm alongside several diamonds.

With its size and embellishments, this necklace is the statement item in this stack, but it’s still pared back enough to be easy to style. When you’re combining different necklaces, it’s good to opt for items of different lengths or with differently shaped pendants or chains.

I think the beauty of layered necklaces lies in the contrast of different styles. The combination Kate was wearing was classic but striking and she could easily have worn it with so many different outfits to give them a touch of glamour.

Multiple necklaces aren’t just for occasionwear or date night outfits - they look dazzling with a plain top and jeans too. A stack feels more contemporary than a single chain or pendant necklace and this complements casualwear.

If you love her look but are daunted by the prospect of picking different necklaces that work perfectly together, then it’s well worth checking out some of the pre-layered necklaces available online and on the high street. They give a similar effect with less styling fuss.

It was lovely to see the Princess of Wales trying something a little different with her jewellery in the Isle of Mull and it’s inspiring me to be more experimental and boho with my own necklaces.

She and Prince William are undertaking a two day visit to the Isles of Mull and Iona where they will meet local people. Their visit comes as their Royal Foundation has announced a partnership to support two community spaces on the Isle of Mull.

You would think given how many millions of people watched Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales say "I do" back in 2011 that we know all there is to know about their magnificent big day. However, this isn’t the case at all.

Their reception back at Buckingham Palace was an entirely private occasion and the moment they signed their registry took place away from the cameras. There are also some details which were much more subtle and which have come to light or been speculated about since then.

One of these is what Prince William said to his now-wife and Michael Middleton when they reached him in front of the altar. Opening up to CBS at the time, lipreader Tina Lannin gave her verdict and claimed that the future King joked, "We're supposed to have just a small family affair."

Even considering the scale of other royal weddings in recent years, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ nuptials were very well-attended. They had 1,900 guests and although plenty of family members from both sides watched them tie the knot at Westminster Abbey, so did dignitaries, politicians, other royals and celebrities.

The grandness of the occasion makes complete sense given that Prince William is so high up in the royal line of succession and that this was the wedding of a future King and Queen.

It was always going to be a big occasion, but Prince William’s hilarious comment acknowledging this might well have helped Michael to feel more at ease. Whilst the future King grew up used to this level of attention, the Middletons were really thrust into the spotlight on this day.

His apparent remark wasn’t the only thing he said when his father-in-law and bride walked up the aisle to him. Tina also revealed her interpretation of the few words Prince William spoke to Kate as he saw her for the first time.

Having eyes only for her, Prince William allegedly said, "You look lovely", followed by "You look beautiful". She certainly did! No matter how many times we’ve seen pictures of Kate on her wedding day, her stunning Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress never fails to impress.

The lace detailing included the floral emblems of the United Kingdom in a nod to her royal role which she’s remained unwaveringly devoted to. This year she and Prince William are marking their 14th wedding anniversary and will do so whilst undertaking engagements.

The couple are spending two days in the Inner Hebrides and are on the Isle of Mull on the 29th April, where they are known by their Scottish titles, the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

Ahead of this they announced a new partnership to help support and develop two community spaces on the island.

Spending their wedding anniversary together in Scotland, where they first met, will likely be very special for them and Prince William has previously declared that both he and Kate have a "love and connection" to the country.

Kate and Prince William tied the knot in April 2010 and the day was filled with special royal customs, from the sprig of myrtle in her bouquet, to her Welsh gold wedding ring. However, when it came to her bridal look the Princess of Wales is said to have pushed back against a long-standing royal tradition.

She wore the late Queen Elizabeth’s glimmering Cartier Halo Tiara in her glossy brunette hair, but she swerved wearing her hair up. Instead, the Princess went for a half-up, half-down style with soft waves.

According to Hello!, royal reporter Ashley Pearson previously alleged in the documentary, William & Kate: The Journey, that Kate was "strongly" encouraged towards an updo.

"Royal sources tell me that the royals indicated very strongly to Kate that they would prefer her to wear her hair up for this very special occasion," she claimed.

Ashley supposedly added, "Kate had her heart set on wearing her hair down with long flowing curls, which is her favourite way to wear it and actually William's favourite as well."

Ultimately, despite the reported suggestions, Kate went for a compromise between an updo and her preferred loose hairstyle. Although it’s not understood to be a strict must-be-abided-by rule, it is traditional for royal women to wear their hair up on their wedding day if the length allows for this.

Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, Princess Eugenie and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex all went for fabulous updos for their big days. Even Zara Tindall, who had her signature blonde bob when she tied the knot with Mike Tindall in July 2011, wore her tresses in an elegant chignon.

The Princess of Wales’s choice of a half-up, half-down look was gorgeous and ended up being the perfect bridal look to complement her diamond-encrusted headpiece. If she’d kept her hair completely loose it might have been trickier to secure this in place.

James Pryce, colleague to Richard Ward whose salon was in charge of styling all of the Middleton family's hair, revealed that it was "sewed" into her hair.

"We came up with a unique concept for securing it. We backcombed the top to create a foundation for the tiara to sit around, then did a tiny plait in the middle and sewed it on," he said, as per The Telegraph. "I've never seen anything like it in my life."

In recent years we’ve seen the Princess wear several other spectacular royal tiaras to State Banquets and receptions. On most of these occasions she’s worn her hair up and nowadays Kate is more of a fan of this elegant, traditional style.

Fashion stylist Miranda Holder previously expressed her belief to woman&home.com that the senior royal’s style has "evolved" along with her royal role.

She said, "The previous soft tumbling curls are more reminiscent of the younger Kate in her formative royal years.

"Kate has evolved, so has her role, and so has her hair. The up-do symbolises a more serious, assertive and confident side of Kate, and whilst incredibly flattering, depicts a more professional image for the Princess."

Although the Princess of Wales still wears her hair down for almost all her royal engagements during the daytime, her updos do feel very polished and appropriate for more formal occasions and visits.

Anyone planning a wedding will be acutely aware of how quickly costs can mount up. Once you say the word 'wedding', the price of everything skyrockets and vendors seemingly add an extra 20% or more to the bill.

According to the Hitched National Wedding Survey, the average cost of a UK wedding was £23,250 in 2024, and the average has sat above £20,000 since 2023. It's a staggering amount for many couples, but the good news is that you simply don't need to spend that much to make your day truly special.

It's important to set a budget and stick to it, offsetting any extra spend on some elements by cutting back on others. But it is your big day, so also think about the things that are important to you and prioritise accordingly.

These tips and tricks (many of which I tried first-hand) can also help keep you on track.

Budget wedding ideas

Send digital invites

Not only is sending digital invites far cheaper, but it also makes it a lot easier to track replies and to get in touch with any acquaintances who rent or change addresses often. Use a site like With Joy, where you can manage your invites and create a website with all the important details about your big day.

Get married at a registry office

Registry office weddings have always been a popular choice, but they're very much in vogue at the moment, especially for any couples seeking a humanist or secular ceremony. Prices start from under £60 and there are so many different registry offices across the country to choose from, ranging from grand, higher-capacity venues to intimate city halls.

Go for buffet-style catering

Food and drink are possibly the biggest costs on the day, and meals can become particularly expensive when you use dedicated wedding caterers. If you're having a more relaxed affair, then consider buffet-style dining and skip the seating plan. This way, you won't compromise at all on flavour and you can offer more variety, but you won't be paying to plate and serve a three-course meal.

DIY your bar if you can

If you get married at your own venue and have the option to set up your own bar, this will help save on drink costs as you can bulk order your alcohol and let guests drink the bar dry without worrying about the tab.

If that's not an option, many bars or venues will be able to negotiate a package for you so you can offer welcome drinks, wine at the table and a limited amount of drinks behind the bar - if your budget permits.

Get a high street wedding cake

Wedding cakes are expensive. And for a reason, as many suppliers are independent bakers who will spend hours (or days) making your cake. But if you're on a budget, you can order wedding cakes from most supermarkets. We got ours from Marks & Spencer (a gigantic Colin and Connie the Caterpillar), which was a kitsch choice and a fun crowd-pleaser. However, M&S stock a range of more traditional cakes - and if you want to make it feel more bespoke, you can customise it yourself.

Go for a non-traditional dress

If you're not fixed on wearing white for your big day, whether it's because it's a second marriage or you're not keen on a traditional wedding, don't be afraid to get a coloured dress! I personally opted for a green Vivienne Westwood dress, which I bought off the rail. Extra kudos because you'll probably get more opportunities to wear it again, too.

Do your own makeup

Bridal makeup is expensive, and it becomes even more expensive if you have bridesmaids. Instead, do your own makeup on the day. You can spend the budget learning how to do your makeup and buying products that you love and are comfortable using - a huge bonus of this approach is that you can use the makeup techniques and products long after your big day.

Make your own centrepieces

Even if you're not crafty, it's pretty easy to make your table decor and centrepieces. Start collecting jam jars or glass bottles in the run-up to your wedding and fill each one with some fresh or dried flowers for an understated but aesthetic touch.

Cut the guest list

Putting together the guest list is probably one of the hardest parts of getting married. Do you invite all the partners you've never met or the distant family members you haven't seen for years? If you keep your list lean and your ceremony smaller, people are less likely to feel offended if they don't make the cut.

Use planning tools

Whether it's an organised spreadsheet or a budget planning app, there is a huge plethora of apps you can use while planning your wedding to ensure you stay on track budget-wise. Many of these also function as project management tools, so you can use them to generally plan your nuptials.

Work with your own playlist (or get your guests to help)

If you're having a more relaxed wedding in a hall or small venue, you might be able to skip the DJ and just use a playlist - you'll just need access to good speakers, a laptop and someone who's happy to man it all. Create your own wedding playlist or ask guests to add their favourite track when they RSVP.

Call on favours instead of gifts

Particularly if you have creative friends, instead of directing them to your registry, ask them if they wouldn't mind helping you with your wedding. This could be as big as taking photos or videos of the day, or just helping you decorate the venue or stamp letters. It all depends on your relationship and their time and skills.

Opt for alternative flowers

For many, getting a beautiful wedding bouquet is essential as it creates such an immediate impact and injects colour into your look. However, they can be really expensive, especially if you also want to dress your tables or venue.

Instead, consider making your own from smaller bunches from the supermarket or florist, or even getting artificial flowers. I got artificial flowers for our wedding and still have them to this day, complete with a note of our vows ticked into the petals.

Rent your dress

Let's face it, as much as you want to look your very best on your wedding, it's also a bit galling to spend so much money on a dress you'll only wear once. So, consider renting instead. There are dedicated sites for this, like Something Borrowed, but you can also rent dresses from retailers like John Lewis and Net-A-Porter.

Hit the high street

If you have bridesmaids or a maid of honour, consider getting their gowns from the high street, rather than dedicated bridal shops. If you're not having a traditional ceremony, you could let them choose their dresses around a loose colour theme. Similarly, don't be afraid to look to the high street for your own dress! John Lewis, ASOS, Selfridges and more all have amazing options for all budgets.

Skip bridesmaids / groomsmen (if it’s not important to you)

Particularly if it's a second wedding or a smaller affair, skip the bridesmaids and groomsmen if it's not super important to you. You'll need a witness wherever you marry, but that role doesn't tend to come with the same pomp and expense.

Prioritise what’s important to you

Even if you're on a tight budget, it's important to prioritise what's most important to you and allocate enough budget to these things. For example, if you want amazing food or a particular venue, write it into your budget plan and work out where you can save money elsewhere to cover it.

Don't forget the smaller costs

Anyone planning a wedding will know just how quickly all the small costs add up. Things like chair coverings, lights, linen and stationery are sometimes overlooked - so ensure you note down everything you need to consider, especially if you're going DIY.

Opt for cupcakes instead of a big wedding cake

If you're not set on a traditional wedding cake, cupcakes taste every bit as good, and you'll be able to stretch your money a bit further with them, meaning you can get a stack of fancy artisan cupcakes for less than you'd pay for a wedding cake.

Make your own favours

You might need to call in friends and family for this one, and there's still budget involved, but consider making your own wedding favours. Whether it's flavoured gin in recycled bottles or a small piece of your favourite cake, homemade favours will not only save you money, but they'll be way more unique and memorable.

Consider getting married during low season

Weekend weddings in the summer months are undoubtedly the most expensive and for a reason; nearly everyone, with advance notice, can make them. But if you get married during low season, from September until April, you can save a lot on costs, and you'll generally find better availability too. If you get married during the colder months, your ceremony will probably need to take place indoors (or with some robust gazebos and heating).

Try a DIY photobooth

Wedding photo booths are fun, but they're also expensive. Instead, create a table of props and let people take their own photos. Apps like LumaBooth will allow guests to take photos with personalised templates and easily share them to a centralised folder.

Decide on your non-negotiables

When you start planning, decide on the things that are non-negotiable to you and the elements you are willing to compromise on. Then, set out your 'nice to haves'. This will help you allocate your budget accordingly without scrimping on the things most important to you.

Shop on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree

If you're going DIY with your wedding, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay will become your best friends. I bought several bundles of fairy lights, decorations and paper bunting from people who had organised their own DIY weddings. Not only is this more environmentally friendly, but you'll also save money. Win-win.

Hire whatever you can

For anything you might not use again, consider hiring instead of buying. Whether it's decorations, speakers or even your dress, by hiring you can ensure you get amazing quality products without blowing your budget.

Do your own hair

While it's lovely getting pampered, especially on your big day, getting your hair done can be really expensive. Instead, learn how to do a style you like - YouTube is a great place to start. You can spend the money on hair accessories instead. Alternatively, call on a loved one to help out.

Have a local hen party

If you're having a low-key wedding and your loved ones have familial and work responsibilities, consider having a low-key hen (or stag) do locally. This might also be welcome to your hens, who might already be spending a lot of money to attend your wedding.

Don't forget the groom

Grooms can get a little forgotten in the run-up to the big day, but new suits (or rentals) can be expensive, and it's important they look and feel their best too, so don't forget to allocate budget for them too!

Budget for unexpected guests

No matter how many times you chase people to RSVP, there will always be some people who drop out last minute, and others who suddenly let you know they can come. So, while it's important to plan around your confirmed attendees, keep in mind that it will be worth catering for a few more, just in case.

Set cash aside for contingency plans

Even if you plan everything to a tee, something will always go wrong. Whether it's last-minute charges from the vendor or extra costs when something breaks down, keep some money aside to cover these costs. For example, I had a DIY wedding in our own venue with buffet-style food and rented crockery and cutlery, but I'd forgotten to arrange for someone to wash them. We found someone last minute and rented them for the evening.

Make your own wedding invites and thank you cards

Digital invites and thank you cards are definitely the most cost-efficient option, but if you want something more personal, consider making your own invites and thank you cards. You can make these by hand or use a website to print off photos or postcards that you can customise digitally.

Save on wedding stationary

Wedding guestbooks and signage are often a forgotten expense, and many people forget them until the very end. You don't need to spend a lot on them as you can generally go DIY or hit the high street, but remember to budget for them.

Wedding season is edging closer and we often focus on finding the best wedding guest dresses and forget that accessories are just as important. An occasionwear look can be taken to new levels of elegance depending on your choice of bag and shoes.

She paired the gown with some simple black heels, went without jewellery and opted for a fresh-faced makeup look to channel understated elegance at its finest and we're oh-so inspired.

But the print, as well as oh-so sophisticated and sleek straight skirt that pools at her feet, is where the classic feel of this dress stops.

Incorporating tonnes of stunning and contemporary design, the Zimmerman dress boasts a flattering halter-style neckline that rounds off just between Cat's collar bones and is held up by a daringly thin strap that hugs the back of the neck. This means the open-back element of the dress can really shine, with delicate strap details running from the neck to the bodice of the dress to hold it all in place.

A ruffle detail at the waist gives the dress tonnes of movement, as Cat brilliantly demonstrated with her hotel lobby strutting on Instagram, and adds some elegant and luxe interest to the silhouette that, otherwise, is really quite simple and sleek. This is something that Cat has always done enviously well with her wardrobe, with all her looks oozing class and elegance while incorporating one really standout element that sets her outfits apart.

Styling the dress, Cat kept things incredibly simple and slipped into a simple pair of open-toe black heels - and that really was it for accessories, apart from the two simple rings she wore. It's a good styling tip for when you're wearing a busy pattern and also an intricately detailed piece; you don't want to overwhelm or overshadow anything with too much jewellery.

With her hair styled in her classic bouncy waves and her skin glowing thanks to her surprisingly affordable go-to tanning foam, Cat complimented the ultra-feminine look of her dress with a fresh-faced makeup look.

Using a thin swipe of black eyeliner to add some definition and drama to the eyes, she kept the rest of her makeup pretty and pink with a shimmering eyeshadow bringing some sparkle to her eyes while a pink-toned blusher, placed high on the cheeks and across the cheekbones, tied in her high-gloss pink lip.

This fur coat is easily one of the pieces in Carrie's wardrobe we lust after the most. The perfect piece of outerwear, it's a gorgeous representation of her glamorous style.

Never one to shy away from bold hair accessories, Carrie made this Hermes scarf her own with some unique styling. We can't say it's a look we've copied, but she made it surprisingly wearable.

The head scarf and cardi combination made for a demure and feminine look that took Carrie on a series of adventures, including a date with the infamous Jack Berger. If you don't remember the scene, you're bound to remember the outfit.

We love that every occasion brought out Carrie's best outfits; you'll never see her in a purely practical look. There's nothing like a pinstripe suit to elevate any wardrobe and we love how she styled it with a matching Breton top.

Paris marked some of the last Carrie outfits from the SATC series, so they will always stand out. One of many flawless tulle moments, this beautiful green skirt could only look this good on Carrie Bradshaw.

It doesn't get much more chic than this outfit. We're almost certain she kickstarted the feminine waistcoat trend with this look, and we can see why. In her signature mules with a soft pop of pink, this ensemble ticks every box.

New Year's Eve ensemble

This is as close to pyjamas as Carrie Bradshaw gets. Heels and the pearl necklace have to remain on, and we love that she brought back her old fur coat for the mad dash to Miranda's apartment on New Year's Eve in the first film.

No list of Carrie Bradshaw's best looks is complete without referencing the Vera Wang wedding dress. Although it didn't get the outing it deserved, it will always remain an iconic fashion moment that is instantly recognisable.

We can only associate this look with Carrie and Big's apartment hunting in the first SATC film. A signature Carrie look, it has tulle, heels, and a statement belt for good measure - a brilliant way to reintroduce her style for the movies.

Denim capris

This look couldn't be more 00s. A slightly eclectic combination of pieces, it shouldn't work as an outfit - but of course, it does. Mixing up silhouettes whilst sticking to a neutral palette, it's a risky look that paid off.

Marni's starfish coat is a standout Carrie item. We love the clashing of prints in this outfit that she pulls off effortlessly, and we'd be lying if we said we hadn't desperately searched for a similar jacket online over the years.

Not only a beautiful monument, Westminster Abbey is steeped in important history. At least 16 royal weddings have taken place at the abbey since 1100 and it has been the coronation church since 1066.

The piece was by Emilio Pucci and fell right to the floor, with delicate ruching over the bodice that accentuated its asymmetrical shape.

The Duchess of Edinburgh styled her own one-shoulder dress in just this way swept upwards into a single strap over her left shoulder which had a gold metal detail in the centre. The material flowed downwards, creating such an elegant silhouette and the rose-pink colour was something else. Whilst so many royals are frequently seen wearing blue, pink is one of Duchess Sophie’s most-worn hues.

For the Paralympic Ball in 2012, the choice of a rosy-pink dress was perfect. This shade was a bold pastel, which added a sense of fun to her outfit, but wasn’t too much for this event, especially given it was a maxi dress in one block colour. 

Although not every wedding or special party will call for a floor-length dress like Duchess Sophie’s, a one-shoulder design is something that Woman&Home’s Digital Fashion Editor Caroline Parr believes would work perfectly for weddings.

"One shoulder dresses are great for elongating your figure, and are a really nice option for hot weather weddings, when strapless dresses might feel a bit too bare," Caroline says. "Style with swept-up hair to make the most of the statement neckline, and choose earrings over a necklace."

Duchess Sophie styled her pink dress like this and wore pearl drop earrings and swept her hair back into a bun fixed to one side, which echoed the asymmetrical neckline of her dress. 

Sadly, we didn’t see her footwear as she arrived with Prince Edward, but if you’re inspired to recreate a similar one-shoulder look for an event, a lot of the most comfortable wedding guest shoes have block or lower heels.

If Her Royal Highness’s shoes matched her wrap then there were probably cream heels as she carried a simple cream wrap with her in case she felt chilly, as well as a pastel pink clutch bag. Altogether her look for the ball was beautiful and would look amazing for other special events too.

There was reportedly a very personal touch on Kate and Prince William's wedding tables that you might want to consider copying if you’re planning your big day.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s magnificent royal wedding might have been watched by millions of people across the world but their receptions went on very much behind closed palace doors. The couple are still the last to receive the Buckingham Palace privilege of having their reception at this iconic residence and after the late Queen Elizabeth hosted a lunch reception for them, King Charles hosted their evening meal and party. Prince William and Kate were pictured excitedly leaving Clarence House to head back to Buckingham Palace for their evening do. 

This had plenty of sweet details but we couldn’t help being especially moved by the couple’s decision for their wedding tables. According to The Telegraph reporting the day after in 2011, an unnamed guest claimed each of the reception tables had been given a very personal name.

"It looked absolutely stunning," the guest alleged. "There must have been at least 30 round tables, with 10 people on each, decorated with beautiful white flowers and candles. When we had arrived earlier, we were each given a little envelope with our table name on it, and the tables had a personal touch too - they had clearly been named after places that were special to the couple and their friends."

Table names reportedly included St Andrews, where they met at university, as well as Lewa after Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya where Prince William spent time during his gap year. It was suggested that another table was called Tetbury after the town close to King Charles’s country residence, Highgrove House, and others were supposedly given Welsh names as a nod to Kate and William’s then-home in Anglesey.

If Kate and Prince William’s wedding tables were indeed named after places that are important to them this was such a lovely way to make an occasion like a wedding reception really reflect them as a couple.

It would’ve ensured that although they publicly shared their ceremony, this part of their day was private and something that could really be appreciated by their nearest and dearest. As reported by The Telegraph, everyone at the reception was "equally important" to Prince William and Kate and the tables were supposedly a mix of royals, other family members and friends. The tables seemingly weren’t the only way the couple honoured places that are important to them at their reception.

Their delicious-sounding dinner menu featured lamb with Highgrove spring vegetables and ended with a trio of desserts, including Berkshire honey ice cream. Prince William spent a lot of time at Highgrove when he was growing up, whilst Kate grew up in Berkshire, not too far from the Waleses’ current residence, Adelaide Cottage. Speaking on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast in 2020, the Princess of Wales described her "happy childhood".

"I'm very lucky I've come from a very strong family. My parents were hugely dedicated to us - myself and my siblings," she said, before later adding, "I think the things that resonate with me most are the simple things, and I think I see that even with my own children."

"If you prefer to wear your hair up then make sure you have texture through it first and use a texturising spray through the mid-lengths and ends to stop it looking too perfect and give it that more relaxed boho, beachy vibe," celebrity hairdresser Katie Allen told us. "You can also pull through some tousled curls, and loosen up the bun for a romantic, whimsical look that isn’t too formal."

The side-swept fringe

Catherine's half-up half-down hairstyle is a great choice for a wedding, adding a more formal look appropriate for a special occasion without committing to a more structured up 'do. A subtle headband can elevate a wedding guest's hairstyle, as can simple clips or sliders. "Similarly if you like to wear your hair down, loose waves, half up half down with flowers or accessories added in are great ways to create a laidback look," celebrity hairdresser Katie Allen told us.

"Sleekier styles will make more of a statement. If you want a ponytail and your hair is short or fine you can use a hair extension to accentuate this and add drama to the look," celebrity hairstylist Katie Allan told us. "It would also be great to look into accessorising the look with clips, ribbons, hairbands or flowers."

Adding a bow to a hairstyle can elevate the look and give it a vintage feel - and it's particularly popular at weddings, as celebrity hairdresser Katie Allan tells us. "The ‘bridal bow’ is a huge trend this year for both brides and guests. It’s a gorgeous accessory that you can add to your style to make a statement."

A sleek ponytail

There's no reason a ponytail can't work well for a dressier wedding guest look, as Blake Lively demonstrates with her sleek and polished pony. Statement earrings will further pull this look together and Blake has opted for some oversized studs to complete the look. 

Tousled waves with a side parting

"A chic relaxed undone wave and bouncy blow-dry with hair secured away from the face, even if just on one side, is a super chic styles that look great no matter your age," celebrity hairdresser Katie Allan tells us. 

A knotted side bun

When it comes to wedding guest hair, the knotted side bun is a winning look that lends itself to more relaxed styling, making it a great choice for women with mid-length or long choices of any age. Lucy Liu opted for a sleek bun and side parting on the red carpet for a flawless formal look. 

A messy bun

A messy bun can be dressed up with curled sections framing the face, as Margot Robbie shows us with a sleek look on the red carpet. Margot's honey-blonde hair adds to the old-school Hollywood glamour element of this timeless occasionwear look. 

A volumised ponytail

An ex of Prince Harry, Cressida Bonas was invited to his 2018 wedding, where she sported one of the hottest looks of London's upper class It girls - the headband. 

Matching her velvet blue dress with a velvet headband in royal blue, her look felt like a melting of the old and the new. A classic, almost-traditional accessory paired with her relaxed, loose wavey blonde hair.

Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Denmark, the oldest child and only daughter of Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, and his wife, Marie-Chantal Miller, attended the 2018 wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank wearing a sleeveless, red dress complete with embellished detailing. 

However, it was her headpiece that truly made the outfit. An elaborate and beguiling structured style, the silver, wave-like design almost looked reminiscent of the snakes from the legend of Medusa.

Socialite and It girl close to the royals, the late Tara Palmer-Tomkinson turned plenty of heads at Prince William and Kate Middleton's 2011 wedding.

The off-the-shoulder dress was by British fashion designer, Deborah Milner, and Tara completed her look with a matching, electric blue hat by royal favourite Philip Treacy. 

The hat played with convention, opting for more length than width, and the teardrop design featured a floral motif in the centre.

Russian designer Ekaterina Malysheva, who married Prince Ernst August of Hanover, joined her husband at the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank. 

The glamorous designer-turned-royal wore an extravagant headpiece, complete with what appeared to be bird wings emanating out of the wide brim.

Queen Elizabeth II was known for her huge collection of flamboyant hats, so it was nearly impossible to narrow it down to just one of Her Majesty's millinery choices as a guest. 

However, there was something refreshing and different with this feathery headpiece chosen for the wedding or her youngest child, Prince Edward to Duchess Sophie.

For the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Princess of Wales wore a delicate primrose yellow wool silk coat by Alexander McQueen.

Finding comfortable wedding guest shoes is not an easy task, and it's something I'm often asked about as a fashion editor. Weddings are the biggest dates of the year in your diary, however most last a full day and long into the night, and will likely involve a fair bit of walking - and dancing!

You may well have chosen your favourite from our list of best wedding guest dresses, but now you need to know how to accessorise. A simple clutch bag usually does the trick, but when it comes to comfortable wedding guest shoes, there's a lot more than just colour to think about. For more casual weddings, you might be able to get away with them, but for the majority of big days your best white trainers just won't cut it.

Comfortable heels sounds like an oxymoron, right? What shoes are most comfortable to wear for a wedding?

We spoke to style editor Matilda Stanley, who told us "It's worth planning your shoes wisely if you have a big day in the diary. A wedding involves a lot of walking, standing and dancing so you want a pair of shoes that will stay as comfortable as possible and take you from the ceremony to the dance floor without any ouch moments!

"Block heels are always a safe bet as they will support your feet better than a skinny stiletto, and if you want plenty of height you could opt for a 70's style platform. A playful pair of platforms that will add inches while keeping your foot at a comfier angle to put less pressure on your soles."

Can you wear white shoes to a wedding?

While white is generally out of the question for dresses, there's absolutely no reason you can't wear white on your feet! Nobody will mistake you for the bride if you're wearing a printed or block colour dress with a pair of white shoes so you can wear them without fearing a faux pas. Comfort is more important than colour!

Is it ok to wear flats to a wedding?

Matilda gave us her opinion on this: "Absolutely! I'm a firm believer that you don't need a sky-high pair of heels to finish an outfit. Flats can look just as chic and will definitely be more comfortable for a whole day and night spent at a wedding.

"The key is to go for a pretty and elegant style of flat rather than anything too chunky. Avoid heavy loafers or brogues and opt for a fuss free ballet pump or a classic Mary Jane that will feel special for a day of celebration and romance. When it comes to a colour, I'd always opt for a soft neutral or a shiny metallic that will work well with pretty much any outfit nicely. Comfy flats are perfect for wearing with jeans and a t-shirt the next day too, which makes them ideal if you're going away for a wedding and worried about suitcase space!

Should shoes and bags match for wedding guests?

Whilst it's tempting to co-ordinate your wedding accessories, personally I like to steer clear of being too matchy matchy. Although if the dress code includes a hat, it's a good idea to stick to similar tones to avoid looking mismatched.

Minnie Driver's recent look at the annual Serpentine Summer party is certainly one to note. The actress wore an embellished red dress styled with black accessories, and a beautiful statement necklace — offering us some serious summer inspiration!

Duchess Sophie’s thoughtful wedding gift from Prince Edward that she keeps coming back to for sophisticated styling.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are celebrating their milestone silver wedding anniversary on 19th June and marked the occasion with the release of a special new photo taken by photographer Chris Jelf. The couple are senior royals, though their wedding day itself was somewhat more low-key than many of the weddings we’ve seen in recent years. Not only did their nuptials not have any military or ceremonial elements, but they even reportedly requested a less formal dress code of ‘no hats’. One royal custom they did uphold at their wedding at Windsor Castle, however, was the bride wearing some magnificent jewellery.

Duchess Sophie stepped out in the Anthemion Tiara, but it wasn’t the only jewellery she donned to say, “I do”. She also wore spectacular black and white pearl pieces and they were reportedly designed personally by Prince Edward for his wife-to-be.

Duchess Sophie’s thoughtful wedding gift from Prince Edward to wear on their big day features a necklace with a hanging pearl pendant in the shape of a cross and a pair of drop earrings with a white and black pearl. Speaking previously to Express.co.uk, Daniel O’Farrell, the founder, bespoke jeweller and diamond expert at DC Jewellery claimed they were a “gift” from the Duke of Edinburgh.

“Sophie's 'wow' elements at her wedding were her black and white cross motif pearl necklace with matching black and white pearl drop earrings, both of which were a wedding gift from Prince Edward, who had them created by Asprey and Garrard,” he stated.

This was an incredibly sentimental and special present for Prince Edward to have supposedly given Duchess Sophie and the earrings in particular have remained a staple part of her jewellery collection ever since. Whilst some people might want to save their wedding earrings for best, the Duchess of Edinburgh has regularly worn hers to engagements and services over the years. 

She’s worn them to the Commonwealth Day Service twice before, in 2012 and 2023, as well as for an event for Whizz-Kidz in Guildford in December 2022 and to the Britannia Royal Naval College a few weeks later. Pearls have long been a favourite jewel for the Royal Family and Queen Elizabeth had a particularly fabulous three-strand pearl necklace she often wore.

Duchess Sophie’s wedding earrings are something a little more statement with the dual colourway. However, they still have a sense of timelessness and Prince Edward’s choice of black and white pearls ensures they’re still very neutral and work with a whole range of outfit colours - as the Duchess has gone on to prove.

Pearls are also more understated then many more dazzling gemstones like diamonds and so pearl earrings work perfectly for day-to-day in a way other earrings in Duchess Sophie’s collection might not. They add sophistication to Her Royal Highness’s looks and whilst she still mixes up what jewellery she wears, she keeps going back to these decades after her wedding.

Even when she’s not wearing her exact wedding earrings, the Duchess of Edinburgh loves wearing other pearl earrings in her collection, showing that they really are a style staple for her. This ties in perfectly with Duchess Sophie's style in general as she tends to favour timeless pieces that will stand the test of time, sometimes with the addition of some more contemporary accessories.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are marking their 25th wedding anniversary on 19th June and a special new photo has been shared in honour of the occasion.

Over the years royal fans have come to expect the release of special new pictures to mark certain royal occasions, from the Prince and Princess of Wales’s children’s birthdays to Father’s Day. Wedding anniversaries are also often honoured with a snap and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh certainly didn’t disappoint when it came to their milestone silver wedding anniversary on 19th June. Shared ahead of the big day itself, photographer Chris Jelf took to Instagram to post a heart-warming photo of Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie in a heart-warming embrace.

Taken at their Bagshot Park home in Surrey, the new picture shows the couple dressed casually, with Prince Edward’s arms lovingly wrapped around his wife's waist.

Duchess Sophie's hands are resting adoringly on top of his and the pair looked relaxed and happy for the new portrait. The caption alongside the message declared, “Congratulations… 25 years! A new image released to celebrate HRH’s The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s Silver Wedding Anniversary.”

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are regularly spotted out and about at royal engagements these days, with them both having stepped up even more to help support the King and Princess of Wales throughout their on-going health concerns in recent months. But it's a rare treat to see such an intimate photo of the couple together in their home surroundings. 

Making it perhaps even more special, the anniversary means Prince Edward is now the first of the late Queen Elizabeth's children to reach the 25-year milestone.

In the photo Duchess Sophie was the epitome of casual chic in her outfit, opting for a Tawnie Tie-Waist Jacket by Paige, striped cashmere jumper from Frame, and a pair of Galvan high-waisted flared trousers in olive. The couple wore the same outfits in another photo taken by Chris Jelf that they shared on the Royal Family's official Instagram account on their anniversary.

This sweet snap showed them sitting together on some steps at their countryside home and in the caption they expressed gratitude to everyone who's wished them a happy anniversary. 

"We are so grateful for the many kind and lovely messages we have received on our Silver Wedding Anniversary. Wishing everyone who is celebrating their own anniversaries a special day too," they wrote, signing off, "Edward & Sophie".

The couple married on 19th June 1999 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and ahead of their big day it was announced that they would be known as the Earl and Countess of Wessex following their wedding. This particular title was reportedly bestowed upon them at Prince Edward’s request after watching the film, Shakespeare in Love. 

An unnamed royal courtier previously claimed to The Telegraph back in 2010, "Prince Edward was going to be the Duke of Cambridge, but he watched the film Shakespeare in Love, which had a character called the Earl of Wessex. He liked the sound of it and asked the Queen if he could have that instead."

Since then they’ve gone on to welcome two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, who became Earl of Wessex when his father was made Duke of Edinburgh on his 59th birthday in 2023. 

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie's rare wedding rule was broken in spectacular style by a member of the Royal Family back in 1999.

There’s nothing quite like a royal wedding to capture the world’s imagination and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s big day was a little different to the ones we’ve seen more recently. Unlike Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011 and Prince Harry and Meghan’s in 2018, there were no military or ceremonial elements in Prince Edward and Sophie’s wedding in 1999. The couple tied the knot at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle on 19th June and this year is their 25th anniversary. All those years ago, they reportedly made another unique choice for their nuptials that concerned the dress code.

As per Express.co.uk, the couple are said to have asked people to wear evening clothing but not hats which are a staple accessory for most royal weddings. However, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s wedding rule was broken in style by a member of the groom’s family.

Prince Edward’s late grandmother the Queen Mother attended the wedding wearing a lavender feather-adorned hat that was nothing short of spectacular. The decoration was very statement and added texture to her look, whilst the soft pastel shade is one of this year’s biggest spring/summer fashion colour trends decades later.

She coordinated her hat with her pale blue outfit and finished off her wedding guest outfit with silver court shoe heels and a matching handbag, alongside her beautiful pearl necklace. It seems that the Queen Mother wanted to keep to her signature style rather than adhering strictly to Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s reported wedding rule.

The Queen Mother was generally always seen wearing some kind of hat and so upholding this tradition in 1999 was something that might not have entirely surprised the bride and groom and they likely wouldn't have minded at all.

Her daughter, Queen Elizabeth, was also known for her love of hats but she only slightly bent the dress code rule at the Edinburghs’ nuptials by going for a lilac headpiece. This wasn’t a full-on hat and had plenty of feathers cascading over to one side for an eye-catching final effect. Princess Anne opted for a single green feather at the back of her hairstyle, though the other guests, including Zara Tindall, went headpiece-free. 

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie’s wedding rule seemingly reflected their desire for their wedding to be a little less formal and more low-key than the weddings of the rest of Queen Elizabeth’s children.

Speaking ahead of their big day in early 1999, Prince Edward was asked about what kind of wedding he and Sophie hoped theirs would be.

"A family one, hopefully. I mean there's no such thing as a private wedding, but I hope that it will be predominantly a family wedding," he explained, as per Hello!. 

Meanwhile, Duchess Sophie remarked, "I think any marriage is a very personal thing, naturally there's going to be more interest in us than there would be in any other people, but it is a personal matter and it's a family occasion."

The day was certainly very personal to them and Duchess Sophie wore a gorgeous wedding dress by Samantha Shaw, as well as custom black and white pearl earrings and a necklace that were carefully designed by Prince Edward.

It's been thirteen years since Prince William and Kate Middleton married at Westminster Abbey - and there was one moment of the day that seemingly failed to follow royal protocol. 

For the Prince and Princess of Wales's anniversary, we have been reflecting on the historic occasion and the details that have stayed etched in our memories such as Carole Middletons outfit the night before the wedding outfit and William’s romantic but risky proposal to Catherine.

The royal wedding, which took place on April 29th 2011, was an international spectacle watched by over 162 million viewers, that required months of meticulous planning. However, an etiquette expert has now noticed one significant error in royal protocol that occurred when the late Queen Elizabeth II arrived at the service. 

Speaking to Hello!, Alexandra Messervy explained, "I spotted that the car conveying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh pulled up in entirely the wrong way in Dean's Yard at Westminster Abbey."

"The Queen got out on the wrong side and there was a bit of a fluster. I think the [guard] who opened the door appeared flustered when the Queen was actually not where she would normally be. The correct protocol for her was to be on the curbside, and she was on the reverse side," she added. 

It was a rare, but major oversight in royal protocol as the Queen is usually let out curbside as historically, when royals were escorted by carriages and horses, gentlemen would get out into the road, while women would be on the pavement to avoid the mud. 

"I think it was a faux pas and, of course, actually in any form of protocol, it is correct for the female to get out on the curbside," Alexandra continued. 

"But looking back at it now since she never put her foot wrong - was it actually wrong? Did she perhaps have a sore leg that day and she couldn't let herself out on the left, was it easier to come on the right, I don't know."

However, even after the mishap, the Queen resolved the issue swiftly to make sure that she exited the car on the right side, by moving across and exiting the car from the same door as her husband. 

"Thankfully, the Queen ignored the guard who opened her car door and instead scooted across to follow Prince Phillip out his curbside door."

There was a beautiful way that Carole Middleton was honoured by the Princess of Wales at her wedding and most people won’t have noticed.

Prince William and Kate’s wedding was an iconic royal moment and it’s hardly surprising that every last detail of the big day was meticulously thought-out. From the to the choice of myrtle in her bouquet in line with royal tradition, to the bride’s Welsh gold wedding band cut from a piece owned by Queen Elizabeth, there were so many subtle but meaningful touches. These made their day - which was watched by millions - still very personal to them and there was a lovely way that Carole Middleton was honoured on the day. 

It was subtle and most people might never have noticed, but Kate’s bridesmaids all stepped out in flower crowns. According to Hello!, the crowns were modelled after Carole’s wedding headpiece as she’s understood to have opted for a gorgeous floral crown for her and Michael Middleton’s 1980 nuptials. 

All four of the Princess of Wales’s bridesmaids were flower crowns with ivy and lily of the valley whilst Pippa Middleton, the Maid Honour, also had a floral decoration in her half-up, half-down hairstyle. Some reports have even suggested that Kate apparently considered wearing a flower crown, but she ended up getting married in the magnificent Cartier Halo Tiara.

Even though she didn’t actually wear a flower crown herself, Kate’s decision for the bridesmaids to wear these stunning headpieces at her royal wedding could be seen as a beautiful way to honour Carole.

Pippa Middleton later followed in her elder sister’s footsteps when she married James Matthews in 2017, opting for similar flower crowns to be worn by her own bridesmaids which included Princess Charlotte. However, the flower crowns weren’t the only special nod to the Princess of Wales’s family that was incorporated into the wedding arrangements and the run-up to the ceremony.

The future Queen broke with tradition to have Pippa as a Maid of Honour - a role that at the time was often considered to be a more American wedding custom. Meanwhile, Kate’s custom-made Robinson Pelham earrings were a gift from her parents and also paid tribute to them in their design. The diamond encrusted earrings featured acorns and an oak leaf - both of which appear in the Middleton family crest which was unveiled shortly before the Prince and Princess of Wales’s wedding. 

As revealed by the Royal Family website, the Middletons worked closely with the College of Arms to create something that "visually identified them as a family". The three acorns included in the Middleton Coat of Arms represent the Princess of Wales, Pippa and their brother James.

They chose acorns specifically because West Berkshire, where they were brought up by Michael and Carole, is surrounded by oak trees. Carole was also personally represented by the gold chevron at the centre as her maiden name was Goldsmith.

Getting candid with The Telegraph seven years after Kate’s big day, Carole shared how she had been hugely involved with both of her daughters’ weddings and prioritised listening to what each of them wanted.

"We talked about music… everything. I was involved lots with both Pip’s and Catherine’s weddings. But I think the most important thing, as a parent, is to listen to what your daughter wants. You can have all the ideas in the world, but it has to be about them. And don’t muscle in on the guest list," she declared.

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s wedding day was changed at the last minute as a “mark of respect”.

Royal weddings take immense amounts of planning and attention-to-detail, but that doesn’t mean that things don’t ever have to change. From Queen Elizabeth’s wedding tiara being fixed on her big day to Princess Beatrice’s nuptials becoming much more low-key due to pandemic, even major royal wedding details have sometimes been adapted. 

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s wedding day was another of these as the couple ended up tying the knot on a completely different date to the one they had scheduled. The couple were set to say “I do” on 8th April 2005 but postponed their ceremony to 9th April as a “mark of respect” following the death of Pope John Paul II.

Clarence House made the announcement just a few days earlier and confirmed that King Charles would be attending the Pope’s funeral on his and Queen Camilla’s original wedding day. 

"As a mark of respect, His Royal Highness and Mrs Parker Bowles have decided to postpone their wedding until Saturday," the statement added, as per The Guardian.

As first in the line of succession at the time, King Charles represented Queen Elizabeth at the funeral service. He and Queen Camilla’s wedding day then went ahead on 9th April as previously planned, albeit a day later than they’d intended. The couple’s selfless decision to postpone their ceremony showcased from the outset their commitment to their royal roles and the importance of duty, which often comes first for senior members of the Royal Family.

King Charles and Queen Camilla exchanged vows in a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall before having a Service of Prayer and Dedication at St George’s Chapel, followed by a reception at Windsor Castle. On the morning of the wedding, Her Majesty was reportedly not feeling well, with royal author Penny Junor claiming to Vanity Fair that the senior royal had “sinusitis”. 

“On the day itself it took four people to coax Camilla out of bed. She’d spent Friday night at Clarence House with her sister, Annabel, and her daughter, Laura. She still wasn’t feeling well, but now it was nerves more than sinusitis that kept her under the covers. She was terrified,” Penny alleged, before adding, “Finally her sister said, “Ok, that’s all right. I’m going to do it for you. I’m going to get into your clothes.” Only at that point did the bride-to-be get up.”

Penny continued, “Slowly, as the day wore on, she relaxed, reassured and supported as always by having her family around her.”

Stepping out in front of the crowd gathered outside the Guildhall must undoubtedly have been daunting, though King Charles and Queen Camilla looked delighted to have become husband and wife. They were treated to a very sentimental speech from Queen Elizabeth at their reception and according to King Charles’s former butler, Grant Harrold, the mother of the groom couldn’t have been more overjoyed for them.

Speaking to Guides for Brides, Grant declared, “The Queen was wonderful with the two of them. She was very sweet with the two of them at their wedding reception. There were hugs between Charles and the Queen and I’m sure between Camilla and the Queen."

"One of my fondest memories is the Queen gathering outside with friends and family to wave the newlyweds off in the car. She was waving and smiling excitedly. She looked like any other proud mother," he added.

This year King Charles and Queen Camilla will celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary and although the ceremony wasn’t on the date they’d initially planned, it was nevertheless an incredibly special day filled with precious memories.

Beautiful, outspoken and not shy of living the high life, Princess Margaret was known for doing things her own way - often in defiance of royal convention.

This was no different on her wedding day. In 1960, Margaret married society photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones, making her the first daughter of a King to marry a commoner - someone without a hereditary title - in hundreds of years. 

She also bucked tradition with her choice of accessory, buying her own tiara for the occasion and not borrowing one from the royal vaults. Margaret purchased the Poltimore Tiara, and the look has become one of the most memorable photographs of a royal bride in history. 

Princess Anne's wedding to Mark Phillips

Princess Anne's first marriage was celebrated with a huge royal spectacle, and led to a stunning photo of the royal party. 

Her first marriage to Captain Mark Phillips lasted from the wedding day, 14 November 1973 (which just so happened to be Charles' 25th birthday) until 1992. 

For the big day, which was attended by over 1500 guests, the Princess Royal wore an embroidered Tudor-style wedding dress, with a high collar and medieval-influenced sleeves designed by Maureen Baker. 

As seen in the glamorous wedding portrait, Anne kept her hair up and secured it with the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara - the same one her mother wore when she married Prince Philip.

Prince William and Kate Middleton make their way through the crowds

After they legally wed in Westminster Abbey, Prince William and Kate Middleton made their way through the Mall towards their final destination, Buckingham Palace. 

This traverse through London gave fans some of the most iconic photos of the royal bride and groom, offering up-close details of Kate's make-up and jewellery. 

The photos of them greeting the thousands of well-wishers allow a greater look at the Cartier Halo tiara, made up of 739 brilliant cut diamonds and 149 baguette diamonds.

Harry and Meghan travel in style

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle did a quick change from their wedding attire and hopped in an enviably cool car to head to their evening reception. 

Meghan, changing to a stunning Stella McCartney halterneck sheath gown, had her new husband open the door of a Vintage 1968 Jaguar E-Type so they could arrive in style. 

In a classic nod to both of their sensibilities, the car had undergone a slight makeover, being converted to run entirely on the more eco-friendly electric power. 

Princess Charlotte steals the show with a sneeze

Princess Charlotte was the star of the show during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in 2018, delighting royal fans as she posed for photographs before and after the ceremony. The cutest moment came when she sneezed after the ceremony, while standing outside St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle with her mother, the now Princess of Wales.

Queen Elizabeth makes her way to Westminster Abbey

While many photos of royal weddings focus on the bride and groom, this aerial shot of Princess Elizabeth (who wouldn't be queen for five years after her wedding) making her way to her husband-to-be truly captures the scale of a royal display. 

The awe-inspiring photo captures the Princess heading along the Mall to Westminster Abbey in the Irish Coach with a sovereign's escort of the Household Cavalry.

The sheer number of people who had come out to see the bride in the cold November weather says it all. A truly historic moment.

King Charles and Camilla finally say 'I Do'

King Charles and Queen Camilla were married in a relatively low-key civil ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall, followed by a marriage blessing at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in 2005. 

Camilla wore a cream silk chiffon dress hemmed with vertical rows of Swiss-made appliqued woven disks and a matching oyster silk basket weave coat. 

The wedding took place some 35 years after they first met in the 1970s. For a couple who had truly weathered a storm to get there, the happy photo of them with their respective children makes for an unforgettable royal wedding photo, packed full of significance and meaning. It's possibly the most romantic Charles and Camilla moment we've ever witnessed. 

Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie's wedding

The youngest child of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Edward eschewed a grandiose wedding when he wed Sophie Rhys-Jones, the now Duchess of Edinburgh, in 1999. 

This iconic photo of the day captures everything about the understatedly elegant Sophie. The dress, designed by Samantha Shaw,  was made of hand-dyed silk organza and hand-dyed silk crepe. 325,000 cut-glass and pearl beads were sewn across it. 

The pearls matched an unusual black-and-white pearl necklace and matching earrings, designed for his bride by the Prince himself and made by royal jewellers Asprey and Garrard.

Princess Eugenie's significant choice of dress

When she tied the knot with Jack Brooksbank in 2018, Eugenie looked exquisite in a £200,000 gown from British designer Peter Pilotto and Christopher de Vos. 

While the dress was as glamorous and regal as one would expect from a Princess, the Queen's granddaughter chose one feature of the dress for a surprising and inspiring reason. 

Eugenie had major surgery on her back to treat a curvature of the spine at the age of 12. Sixteen years later, she chose to honour those who helped her and hoped to help others with scoliosis by featuring a low-back design that showed off her scar. 

Eugenie told ITV's This Morning ahead of the wedding, "I had an operation when I was 12 on my back, and you'll see on Friday [at the wedding], but it's a lovely way to honour the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this.

"I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it's really special to stand up for that."

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew have some fun

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, was always celebrated for her playful sense of humour. 

In one of the most memorable photos from her 1986 wedding to Prince Andrew,  Sarah didn't let the daunting concept of being on the Buckingham Palace balcony in front of thousands stop her from having a bit of fun.

Veering dangerously close to pantomime, Sarah and Andrew teased the crowd to cheer louder and louder as they anticipated the iconic kiss. 

The Queen supports Charles and Camilla's ceremony

The late Queen famously did not attend Charles' secular marriage ceremony to Camilla, largely thought to be in accordance with her strict Christian values as the leader of the Church of England.

However, she did throw the married couple a lavish reception at Windsor Castle, which included a special blessing. 

The photo of Her Majesty in attendance is important as it dispels an oft-cited theory that she didn't approve of Charles and Camilla's union.

Grace Kelly's real-life fairy tale

A royal wedding from a different locale now, but easily one of the most iconic and memorable weddings of all time. 

Actress Grace Kelly's love story took her from Hollywood to Monaco when she married Rainier III in a stunning ceremony. These intimate photos from inside the legendary ceremony capture intricate details of Grace's dress, often regarded as one of the most elegant and best-remembered bridal gowns of all time. 

It was designed by Helen Rose from the MGM Hollywood studio and used ivory faille, 100 yards of silk net, thousands of hand-sewn pearls and a three-foot long train.

William and Kate's iconic wedding car

The name's William. Prince William. 

The now Prince of Wales must have surely felt like James Bond after his 2011 wedding. Not only had he 'got the girl' - the glamorous Kate Middleton - he drove off in Bond's signature car, an Aston Martin. 

Both William and Kate look like they're having the time of their lives as they race off in the luxury vehicle. 

Zara and Mike Tindall's enchanting wedding

Mike and Zara Tindall tied the knot on 30 July, 2011 at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, just three months after Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding. 

Perhaps because of the huge media attention around her cousin's wedding, Zara's wedding was less of a grand affair, but it still included plenty of special touches. 

Zara opted for an ivory silk dress by designer Stewart Parvin, one of her grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s favourite couturiers, paired with Jimmy Choo heels and a silk tulle veil.

For a touch of tradition, she added Princess Andrew's Meander Tiara which belonged to her mother, Princess Anne. The tiara included a brilliant-cut diamond surrounded by a glittering wreath and originates in Greece, the home of her grandfather, Prince Philip. 

The Duke of York and Elizabeth Bowes Lyon - the Queen's parents

Prince Albert married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon of Scotland in 1923 at Westminster Abbey in London. They might not be as instantly recognisable names - better known to audiences today as King George VI and the Queen Mother. 

Elizabeth only agreed to marry King George (then going as Albert) after his third proposal attempt.

Luckily, she did eventually say yes. The pair would go on to be parents to Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch is British history.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank

In 2018, Princess Eugenie had one of the most fabulous 'something borrowed' ever - a stunning diamond and emerald tiara lent from the royal archives. 

Immortalised in these stunning photos, Eugenie wore the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara.  

Sometimes referred to as the Boucheron Tiara, the stunning diadem was made by luxury jewellers Boucheron for Dame Margaret Helen Greville in 1919 in the fashionable Kokoshnik style popularised by the Russians.

It features brilliant and rose cut diamonds pavé set in platinum, with six emeralds on either side. Eugenie's chignon haircut helped spotlight the tiara and the matching emerald earrings - a gift from her husband for the nuptials. 

Pippa Middleton

While not technically a royal herself, as sister to the future queen and in line to inherit her own Scottish title, Pippa Middleton's stunning wedding photo most definitely belongs on the list. Especially with that iconic gown. 

Designed by Giles Deacon, Pippa's gown as she walked down the aisle to James Matthews was made entirely of lace. 

The material had been hand-assembled to create a seamless sheath, and it was embroidered with pearls. For a modern touch, there was a tight-fitted waist which bloomed out into a tulle-filled train.

Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel

On June 19, 2010, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Duke of Vastergotland were wed in a stunning Stockholm ceremony. 

It was Sweden's first royal wedding since 1976. 

The bride wore a dress created by designer Pär Engsheden. It was made from pearl-white, double-sided duchess silk satin and included a train that was almost five metres long. 

She wore the iconic Cameo Tiara for a regal finishing touch - the tiara featuring gold, pearl, and antique cameo dates all the way back to Napoleon I. 

Queen Letizia marries King Felipe

More than 25 million people watched the royal wedding of Spain's Felipe to the now Queen Letizia in 2004.

More than 1000 guests attended the wedding, with 36 royal houses and heads of state present, including King Charles, Prince Albert of Monaco, and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Letizia wore a wedding dress designed by Manuel Pertegaz which was woven with Valencia silk and embroidered with silver and gold threads.

Harry and Meghan's wedding

On May 19, 2018, Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

A real star-studded affair - with guests including Oprah Winfrey and George and Amal Clooney - it was always destined to be an iconic wedding, even by royal wedding standards.

Inside Grace Kelly's lavish reception

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier’s wedding was always going to be spectacular - Hollywood royalty marrying into a European dynasty. 

If the Oscar winner looking timeless in her trend-setting, legendary dress wasn't already one of the most iconic royal wedding photos ever taken, pictures taking us inside the lavish lunch reception really takes the cake - pun intended. 

The many, many tiered cake was topped with a musical box which hid a cage containing two turtle doves - with the birds dramatically released when Prince Rainier cut through the icing.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden

The wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia Hellqvist took place on 13 June 2015 in Stockholm.

The son of the Swedish king and a former reality star might have sounded like an unlikely pairing, but the royal bride proved her credentials when she stunned in a white dress by designer Ida Sjöstedt, featuring a train embellished with couture lace, and sporting a diamond and emerald tiara. 

They danced the night away in the Royal Chapel of Stockholm in memorable photos which evoke fairy tale romance and enchanting escapism.

Sophie and Edward's laid-back detail

On a warm summer day in June 1999, Prince Edward married the now Duchess Sophie. But as these memorable photos from the event prove, there was something subtle but undeniably unusual about the nuptials.

Meghan Markle's walk down the aisle included one of the best candid photos of a royal bride ever.

St George's Chapel and the May sunshine created a moment where the light caught Meghan’s bespoke wedding dress and veil from British designer Clare Waight Keller, artist director at Givenchy, and made the Duchess of Sussex look practically angelic.

Per Vanity Fair, the design of the dress has a nod to Meghan's Hollywood roots, citing Audrey Hepburn's gown - from Hubert de Givenchy himself - worn in Funny Face as inspiration. Needless to say, this tops the list of Meghan Markle's most stylish moments.

The royal wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip was a true historical moment, and there are plenty of photos to choose from that capture the monumental day.

Botticelli's famous painting Primavera, which symbolises the coming of spring, was reportedly tinspiration for Norman Hartnell's gown, which was made from duchesse satin and included a 15-foot silk tulle train. 

The first look at Diana's secret wedding dress

There is perhaps no more iconic photo from Princess Diana's 1981 wedding than the first full glimpse of her extravagant, unforgettable dress.

Designed by husband-and-wife team David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the ivory taffeta gown was embroidered with sequins, frilled lace, and 10,000 pearls. The dress was considered one of the most closely guarded secrets in fashion history, so the media had no idea what it would look like, making the reveal all the more grand. 

Scrutinise photos of Diana's dress on the day and you might be surprised to see the usually impeccable Princess actually had lots of wrinkles in the gown. This was reportedly because the excessive amount of fabric made it difficult for her to fit in the state coach.

Being forced to fold the fabric multiple times over to fit Diana into the carriage was what caused the wrinkles on her dress, Elizabeth Emanuel revealed, per the Daily Mail.

William and Kate's much-anticipated kiss

As surprising as it may seem, there hadn't been a major royal wedding including a Buckingham Palace appearance since Sarah Ferguson married Prince Andrew in 1986. 

So, in 2011, when the future king married Kate Middleton, it was always going to be huge and the kiss between newlyweds - a tradition started by William's parents - was always going to make for an unforgettable photo.

Meghan’s sweet message in her veil

For Meghan’s ‘something blue’ on the big day, she added a sweet detail to her 16-foot-long veil. The veil featured a piece of blue fabric, which came from the dress she wore on her first date with Harry. Cute.

Charles walked Meghan down part of the aisle

When her father was unable to attend the wedding due to recent surgery, Meghan asked her father-in-law, then-Prince Charles, to walk her down the aisle. He met her at the quire and walked her towards her new husband, in a touching moment.

Two of Harry's exes attended

While it could be a little awkward to have an ex at your wedding, Harry actually had two former girlfriends on the invite list. Both Cressida Bonas and Chelsy Davy attended the ceremony, proving that Harry is on good terms with both.

Harry personally picked some of the flowers for Meghan's bouquet

Philippa Craddock crafted Meghan's timeless bouquet, with Prince Harry playing a role in its design. A Kensington Palace statement revealed that Prince Harry personally selected various flowers from their private garden at Kensington Palace to enhance the custom bridal bouquet. Before meeting Charles at the quire, Meghan walked alone for part of her journey, making her the only royal bride in history to walk down the aisle alone. Her decision to start her bridal procession alone showed that, from the onset, she was not afraid to defy convention. 

They donated their flowers afterwards

St. Joseph's Hospice in London was adorned with an abundance of flowers donated the day after Harry and Meghan's wedding. The floral arrangements, designed by the renowned high fashion florist Craddock, were sourced from a variety of royal estates.

Meghan's entourage of pageboys and bridesmaids seemed to be having a blast at the wedding. Posing for the cameras and giggling amongst themselves, the children accompanied Meghan as she walked down the aisle in matching outfits and flower crowns.

Instead of a traditional fruit cake, Harry and Meghan opted for a lemon and elderflower cake, skillfully crafted by chef Claire Ptak, the owner of an East London-based bakery. Elton John performed at the reception

Plenty of famous guests were on the invite list for the royal wedding, including Sir Elton John, who entertained guests during the luncheon. Elton John was a close friend of the late Princess Diana and delivered a poignant performance of "Candle in the Wind" at her funeral.

They had a charity registry

Rather than traditional physical gifts on their wedding registry, the royal couple encouraged their fans, guests and loved ones to make donations to seven carefully chosen charities, including Crisis, The Wilderness Foundation, the Children's HIV Association and others.

Meghan looked stunning in each of her outfits on the big day, but few images captured the sheer length of the five-metre (16-foot) veil attached to her beautiful gown. This birds-eye shot shows the newly wedded couple in all their glory, as well as a full-length view of the veil.

An estimated 1.9 billion people across the globe tuned in to watch the historical event on TV and streaming services, making Harry and Meghan's nuptials one of the biggest televised events in history. 

Meghan's pageboys were the twin sons of her best friend

Meghan’s long and intricately adorned veil was carried by page boys Brian Mulroney and John Mulroney, the twin sons of Meghan’s best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney. The boys found the whole day very funny, giggling and posing for the cameras.

Harry had a unique wedding band

The tradition of using Welsh gold for royal wedding rings dates back to Queen Elizabeth's mother's wedding in 1923, and Meghan's ring was crafted from gold sourced from the Clogau St David’s mine at Bontddu in North Wales. But in a turn away from tradition, Prince Harry opted for platinum for his wedding band.

And who could forget Harry's words to Meghan as he met her at the altar?

All eyes were on Meghan as she joined her husband at the altar, and his sweet words to her made the whole country swoon. Harry whispered “you look amazing, I’m so lucky” to his bride before the happy couple gave their vows.

They drove to the reception in a vintage car

Leaving the luncheon at Windsor Castle, the royal couple chose to travel to their reception in style. Hopping behind the wheel of a vintage Jaguar from the 1960s, Harry drove his new bride to the reception at Frogmore House. Another sweet detail on the car was the license plate, which was E190518 - a reference to May 19, 2018, their wedding date.

A photographer caught this iconic image as Meghan and Harry left the chapel after exchanging their vows. While the light is dappled, Harry looks completely in love with his new bride, holding her hand as they greet the party outside. There were plenty of big names on the invite list for the royal wedding including actor and musician Idris Elba, who also performed at the reception. Elba spoke about the unusual proposal on The Ellen Degeneres Show. According to Elba, Harry approached him and said “‘Hey man, what are you doing on the 19th May?’ And I was like ‘Nothing’. He goes ‘Hmm, would you DJ at my wedding?’ I was like, ‘Is this a joke? Are you joking?’ And he’s like ‘Serious’”.

Royal weddings are often star-studded affairs, and Harry and Meghan’s was no exception. In fact, owing to Meghan's TV career, it was possibly *the* most star-studded royal wedding, ever. The guest list was brimming with famous guests, including Amal and George Clooney, Serena Williams, Oprah Winfrey and David and Victoria Beckham.

Despite the diamonds and the Givenchy gown, not everything Meghan wore on the big day came with a hefty price tag. Her nail varnish, Ballet Slippers by Essie, is surprisingly affordable, retailing at less than £7. The light pink shade is a Royal Family staple, much-loved by the Duchess of Cambridge, too. The late Queen Elizabeth was also reportedly a fan of the classic shade.

Meghan never had a makeup trial before the big day

Meghan Markle's wedding makeup echoed her everyday style, with a simple, effortless elegance. The princess worked with makeup artist Daniel Martin for her look, who revealed that they weren’t able to meet up beforehand to do a customary makeup trial due to their busy schedules. Not that you'd ever guess it - her makeup was impeccable.

Meghan's tiara belonged to the Queen Mother

Meghan’s whole outfit was stunning and people across the globe loved her traditional yet minimalist look. However, it may surprise some people to find out that she opted for a tiara that deviated from the traditional pronged crown. The diamond and platinum bandeau she wore for her big day originally belonged to Queen Mary, Elizabeth II's grandmother.

Meghan defied tradition with her vows

When standing at the altar with her husband, Meghan became the latest woman in the royal family to do away with the traditional wedding vows, which historically include a pledge for the bride to "obey" her husband. She followed in the footsteps of Princess Diana, who controversially omitted the vow at her 1981 wedding, and Kate, who did the same in 2011.

Wedding expert Lavinia Stewart-Brown, founder and director of Lavinia Stewart-Brown events, previously expressed her belief to Express.co.uk that having a Maid of Honour was more of an American tradition. Typically, the Royal Family only have bridesmaids and they are usually all children, with no adult bridesmaids. 

"It’s becoming more and more popular to stray from traditional wedding conventions, with a number of couples choosing to break the rules to make their big day their own," she claimed. "The Princess of Wales, for example, chose to break royal convention by introducing an American tradition by having her sister, Pippa Middleton, as her maid of honour."

Nowadays it’s more popular in the UK to have a Maid of Honour and Lavinia’s remarks could suggest that Kate is something of a trend-setter by departing from British tradition. Seven years later Princess Eugenie made her sister Princess Beatrice her Maid of Honour, mirroring Kate’s choice. However, despite Lavinia suggesting that Maid of Honours are more of an "American tradition", California-born Meghan Markle didn’t follow in Kate’s footsteps.

When she tied the knot with Prince Harry in May 2018, Meghan only had bridesmaids and none were adults, in-keeping with royal custom. In this way it seems like the Duchess of Sussex favoured the more British tradition of not having a Maid of Honour, rather than one of her close friends or relatives fulfilling this role.

Like Kate, though, she also had myrtle in her bouquet which is a royal tradition that can be traced back to Queen Victoria's reign. Prince Harry and Meghan also travelled in the same Landau Carriage that had taken Prince William and Kate back to Buckingham Palace after their ceremony.

Married at First Sight Australia has finally returned to the UK and we can't wait to meet all the couples of season 11!

When it comes to the best romantic reality TV shows, Married at First Sight Australia is a fan favourite for a reason as season after season the original MAFS show shocks and delights viewers. On February 26th the first episode of the latest season of the show was released and fans were delighted to see some of the first couples tie the knot. But how binding are these weddings? Are the weddings in Married at First Sight legally binding? Here's what you need to know...

Are the weddings in Married at First Sight Australia legally binding?

No! It has been established many times over the years that the weddings in both the UK and Australian versions of Married At First Sight are not binding and instead are commitment ceremonies that are not valid in the eyes of the law.

Per Capital FM, a spokesperson for Channel Nine, the platform for the show in Australia, confirmed that a real legally binding marriage would not be compliant with Australian law. "In order to comply with the Australian Marriage Act (1961) which requires one month and one day notification, a marriage in law was not conducted," they said.

"Each participant embarked on a commitment ceremony with a wedding celebrant with all due intention to commit fully to this union for the duration of the experiment. At the end of the experiment, they are given the option to continue with the relationship or go their separate ways."

Do other series of MAFS have legally binding weddings?

Some of the shows in different countries do have legally binding weddings. In the US version of Married At First Sight, there are prenups built into their marriage to ensure that their assets are protected, the contestants then have an official wedding with a marriage license and certificate. 

"There is a prenup that is built in," Chris Coelen, the CEO of Kinetic Content, which produces the US version, told TheWrap. "It's a very short, brief prenup. It basically says what they walk into [the marriage with], is what they walk out of the marriage with."

"We want to give them some protection walking in. If for some reason it does not work out, at least you are protected with this basic form. You are not going to get yourself into any legal trouble. Once they are into the marriage, everything is completely up to them," he said.

Previous seasons of MAFS UK did seem to have legally binding weddings as previous contestants have spoken about having to get divorced. However, this is no longer the case. A spokesperson for the show also previously told Metro that the UK has followed the Australian example, and made the marriages not legally binding. 

"Following the Australian format, rather than legal marriages, the couples will make a lifelong commitment to one another at a glamorous ceremony, overseen by a wedding celebrant, that includes guests, bridal gowns, dancing, speeches, and cake," said the spokesperson.

Married at First Sight Australia season 11 is on E4 and continues every Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm.

Meghan Markle has proved that the messy bun is going nowhere as she brought back her wedding hairstyle with a more casual twist.

She might be known for her all-out glamorous looks at huge occasions, but the Duchess of Sussex is also a fan of low-key styling too. What we looked for

When drawing up my shortlist of the best wedding guest dresses, I considered several factors. Firstly, you have to remember that weddings can be long days, so the dream scenario is a lightweight dress that will take you from morning to evening, and can cope easily with a change of shoes.

I thought about the different types of weddings - from church to beach, and everything in between. I also considered how well the dresses travelled. The last thing you want is to have to get up at 5am to start steaming your occasionwear!

As I said earlier, midi length dresses are a popular choice, so I focused on below-the-knee and longer. I also considered affordability, as well as how to care for each dress - it's always a plus when you can chuck them in the washing machine after a big day!

Pockets were a plus for me personally, and I also really leaned into prints, as I think people gravitate towards florals and polka dots for joyous celebrations such as weddings.

I also took Megan's advice when it comes to body shape and dress code:

“For plus-size guests, don’t shy away from bold colours or prints because of your size or stature - strategic ruching and waist-cinching details can highlight your best features,” she says.

I definitely prefer styles with longer sleeves, as I like some arm coverage. It's practical too - even if you're attending a summer wedding, the weather in the UK offers no guarantees. Think voluminous balloon sleeves or a flouncy flare to make them the focal point of the look. A longer sleeve can also offer balance a lower neck or hemline, whilst mesh fabric will give gentle coverage, without feeling too heavy.

Summer is the season for weddings, so I took note of the spring/summer 2025 fashion trends and tried butter yellow and bold florals.

“Floaty midi and maxi dresses in chiffon, organza, or linen blends will keep you cool while looking your best. Colour-wise, butter yellow and 24k gold are trending this season, along with soft pastels and romantic floral prints. A strappy heel and delicate gold jewellery will add the perfect finishing touch,” adds Megan.

Ones that just missed the list

I had hoped to find a dress on Amazon for anyone looking for last-minute options, but in the end, I stuck to tried and tested high street brands.

I tried on lots of great dresses from stores like Phase Eight, Hobbs, Reiss and Mint Velvet too, but the nine I narrowed it down to were the ones that really impressed me the most.

I loved this Nobody's Child dress, but it's almost all sold out, and whilst the strapless style of this M&S polka dot dress didn't quite work for me, I do think it could still work well for a wedding guest.

Can I wear a sparkly dress to a wedding?

In general, it is fine to wear sequins to a wedding, although you should consider the colour of the sequins, the time of year and the style of the wedding before choosing your dress.

If the wedding includes an evening black tie party or a cocktail hour, then sequins are expected, however, if you're going to a wedding that involves an afternoon tea, or a beach ceremony, sequins might be seen as 'over-the-top' for the event.

You will want to avoid sequins that are too light - ie. too white or a very light silver, as you don't want to upstage the bride. Equally if you can find out the colour of the bridesmaid dresses, you might want to avoid that colour sequin too. If you're still unsure, ask the bride for her thoughts, she'll appreciate the thought and can put your mind at ease.

Can wedding guests wear the same colour dress as bridesmaids?

It's best to avoid wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids where possible, as you don't want to look like you're part of the bridal party if that's not the case. While this isn't a massive faux pas, in order to avoid this, ask the bride if she can give you a heads-up on the colour theme of the wedding, so you can avoid accidentally matching.

Stylist and freelance Fashion Editor Julie Player offers this advice: "There are so many flattering dress styles to choose from when you are deciding what to wear for a wedding, and it’s important that you feel comfortable, weddings are usually long days!

"If you have a favourite everyday dress shape, for example, if you always feel great in a shirtdress or love how you look in a fit and flare style, I advise that you stick to this tried and trusted shape and try to find a similar style in a more distinctive fabrication. Look out for fabrics like silk or satin that will look extra special. Weddings are joyous affairs, and they are a great excuse to wear gorgeous colours or bold patterns.

"This season, you’ll find lots of statement spots or large-scale floral prints that are perfect for a daytime celebration. If dresses aren’t your thing, you could opt for a softly tailored trousers suit or jumpsuit. I would avoid anything too dark and instead go for a sorbet pastel shade that has a more romantic vibe.

"Alternatively, if you have a classic navy trouser suit in your capsule wardrobe, you could consider investing in a silk blouse in a softer shade and add glamorous accessories to elevate the look."
