Sporting a trench coat by the brand, Anita looked timelessly elegant in her chic autumn outfit, which consisted of a classic beige trench coat, slipped over a tan midi dress, paired with a coordinating shoulder bag.

We only caught a glimpse of the dress and its stunning copper-toned brown colour, as the trench largely covered the design. But the two tones worked brilliantly together. Anita accessorised with a coordinating Burberry small rocking horse bag and added a bold twist with contrasting green boots.

Add in some comfy jeans and flat sandals and you’re good to go - as Clodagh McKenna just showed. The chef provides just as much fashion inspiration as she does foodie inspiration and for a trip back to her hometown of Cork in Ireland, she went for this simple style combination.

Her trench was on the longer side without being floor-sweeping and fell to her shins. It was single-breasted and had a neat collar and long sleeves which she ruched up to elbow-length.

The best trench coats around tend to be either black or a sandy tone and Clodagh’s was no exception. It was a warm tan tone that complements pretty much any other colours, meaning she can get plenty of wear out of this coat with a lot of different pieces.

This is why I would always go for a neutral shade when I’m shopping for trenches, as they don’t require careful consideration of what to wear them with to avoid colour clashes. The ITV star wore her coat unbuttoned for a less formal feel and this worked well with her outfit underneath.

In a video where she was discussing her upcoming appearance at the Cork on a Fork Festival, Clodagh gave us a glimpse of the rest of her look. It consisted of a blue and white striped shirt left untucked over a pair of straight leg jeans.

Denim trends come and go, but straight leg jeans have never really gone out of fashion and they’re a nice mid-point between comfy wide-leg styles and streamlined ones. A mid-blue wash like hers can also be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, as they’re not as formal as indigo jeans or as casual as light blue to start off with.

The smartness of the chef’s trench elevated her jeans into more of a smart-casual outfit and her footwear of choice helped with this too. Whilst I’m a big fan of the Birkenstock Arizonas for the summer months, they’re admittedly not the most elegant of shoes and simple slip-on flat sandals are a great alternative.

Clodagh McKenna’s sandals were a warm tan tone with a layered strap running across the top of her feet. Other than that, they were entirely plain - another clever move when you want to slip on your shoes in a rush and be confident they’ll always go with your outfit.

They didn’t exactly match her trench coat, but because they’re a similar colour palette the sandals went well with it. Had she needed a bag for this video, I would’ve expected her to have gone for a tan crossbody for practicality.

With her golden blonde hair swept back into a relaxed updo, Clodagh looked comfortable and put-together. This is an outfit that's easy to pass over in favour of bright colours and fun prints for summer, though it’s far more wearable day-to-day.

The actress was spotted filming in London for the series Jack Ryan wearing the ever-so-chic Sezane Clyde Trench coat - this time in an elegant green shade. As a blonde, the colour of my trench coat can make a huge difference to my complexion - I often struggle with the classic beige hue of many trench coats. Amal Clooney's coat collection has to be one of the best I've ever come across, so I'm looking to her for inspiration on how to style a trench coat. The thing that stood out to me from these images taken back in 2018, was the one detail that really takes her trench coat to the next level - even if she's only carrying it artfully over her arm!

Hers if of course a Burberry trench coat. The giveaway? The instantly recognisable check print lining. It's such a simple but striking detail that elevates an otherwise simple piece, and it's a feature that as a fashion editor, I know I always look for when shopping for trench coats.

Spring is edging closer and with it, trench coat season, so we were more than a little excited to see Lucy Punch’s Amanda stepping boldly across a football pitch wearing the most elegant trench coat outfit in Amandaland. When the weather warms up and we no longer need to reach for our puffer coats and best cashmere jumpers as much, a trench coat is what we gravitate towards as the perfect transitional piece. You can throw it over lighter knits and pair with jeans and trainers for a casual feel, or go full-on Amanda and dress them up.

In Amandaland the titular character wore a crew neck beige knitted dress with her trench coat and elevated her look even more with some heeled knee high boots. They were a muted mushroom-brown that kept to the neutral colour palette of the rest of her look and the sharply pointed toes and stiletto heels oozed glamour. Lucy’s character matched her flapover shoulder bag to her shoes which tied them together beautifully.

If you’re ever in need of inspiration for new date night outfits then heeled boots like this with a comfortable, streamlined dress and a trench is worth trying out for yourself. Just be careful if you plan on wearing it to watch a football match! Amanda's coat got covered in mud when she fell over and even though she insisted to Della that it was fine because it was "last season’s" design, it’s a situation most of us would probably rather avoid if we can.

The thing about the Great British weather is that just as soon as you feel like the temperature begins to creep up after a long old winter, and you spot tiny signs of spring, the rain starts. Sienna looked simply stunning when she stepped out in London this week wearing an A-line denim midi dress, with a fitted bodice, flattering square neckline and flowing skirt. The deep indigo hue was so striking yet with it being denim, a fabric we know and love, the style felt incredibly wearable.

The dress itself was simple, with no embellishments or unique silhouette. Its beauty lied instead in the impeccable and flattering fit. Sienna let this shine with her pared back styling too, adding a simple gold chain link necklace and a matching gold bracelet.

To keep warm in the cool autumn weather, she paired the dress with a vampy leather trench coat. We love this edgy take on how to style a trench coat, with the heavy material beautifully complementing the rich denim of her dress and adding some more texture into her look.

We love this pared back and simple look, with each element, from the footwear to the lipstick, working together to create a cohesive, wearable and fun style that we can't wait to recreate.

Pippa Middleton’s tan knee high boots and timeless trench coat are the perfect combination for looking stylish and keeping cosy.

Many items in our autumn capsule wardrobe will also be perfect for winter too, though cold weather styling isn’t always easy. When we want to wrap up warm and look fabulous at the same time the combination of a classic coat and knee high boots is virtually unbeatable - and it’s one Pippa Middleton adores. Back in the day the Princess of Wales’s sister was regularly spotted out and about in London in knee high boots and a variety of shorter and longline coats and jackets to keep her snuggly warm yet chic. However, one of our favourite looks from her combined the gorgeous texture of suede knee high boots with a timeless trench coat.

She wore these in December 2012 when she visited Kate in Hospital where the Princess was receiving treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum during her pregnancy with Prince George. Pippa was pictured leaving in her Superdry beige coat and tan boots with a low heel.

Pippa Middleton’s boots appeared to be made of suede or faux-suede and although leather boots are a favourite for durability in wet weather, if you suede-protect your knee highs well they can be equally practical, especially when it’s cold. Having half of your leg insulated in material is great for keeping cosy and suede boots add softness and texture to an outfit.

They make a lovely change from leather boots, especially in this rich tan tone chosen by Pippa which is equally versatile as black boots. The hue works well with both dark and light hues and in this case, Pippa’s boots also echoed the shade of her trench coat. This colour palette coordination gave her outfit a put-together feel and her coat was so classic, with its double-breasted design and waist belt.

A belted coat is a very flattering choice if you’re looking to accentuate your waist and on this blustery December day we’re not surprised Pippa had her coat fully buttoned up to the top. Whilst a lot of trenches are longline or knee length, this coat finished above the knee. If you’re wondering how to style a trench coat, the length is a major factor and here Pippa went for either a mini dress or skirt that finished just below the hem of her coat.

This kept her look very streamlined and unfussy and the black tights blended in with her outfit so there was a stunning contrast between them and the warm-toned neutrals of her coat and boots. The coat was quite smart and the boots and rest of her outfit more relaxed and this came together to form a look that worked well for the daytime as well as for evenings out.

The Princess of Wales’s sister added a slouchy tan shoulder bag carried over her arm and left her brunette tresses loose and casual. Despite wearing this look over a decade ago, it’s as on-trend and easy to wear now as it was then and we’ll be embracing her autumn/winter staples again this year. It’s likely that she will too, although the next time we might see Pippa in public is likely to be if the Princess of Wales hosts another Together at Christmas carol concert in December.

Pippa and their parents have been regular attendees in the past and it’s always exciting to see what they wear as they arrive to support Kate.

Duchess Sophie’s khaki trench coat dress from 2023 is still the perfect autumn layering piece and if you haven’t embraced muted greens yet you soon will.

At this time of year with the unpredictable weather, layering couldn’t be more key and for many of us that’s one of the best parts of dressing for autumn. It opens up so many possibilities and means we can get more wear out of our autumn capsule wardrobe items - including many of our midi dresses. Wearing a neutral long-sleeved top, lightweight jumper or a T-shirt underneath can give them an autumnal twist.

This works especially well with sleeveless dresses and even if you don’t have one in your wardrobe right now, it’s well worth adding one if you’re as entranced as we are by Duchess Sophie’s khaki trench coat dress from last year. The Duchess of Edinburgh is a fan of the best British clothing brands and wore this Alexander McQueen midi dress to the grand opening of the Charfleet Book Bindery in Canvey Island, Essex.

As we enter the new season we can’t help thinking back to this outfit as it was a masterclass in how to layer and the sage-khaki green tone of her dress is also great for autumn. Right now earthy shades like olive green, burnt orange and chocolate brown are having a resurgence in popularity, in line with the autumnal colours of the great outdoors. Khaki green is particularly on-trend for autumn 2024 and Duchess Sophie’s look showed how easy this hue is to style. 

It’s muted enough to be very versatile and works so well with other neutrals, including paler colours like white and cream. On this occasion the senior royal wore a boat-neck white T-shirt underneath and the combination was understated yet so stunning. The top made the green really pop and the dress had a trench-coat style to it, with formal lapels and a tie waist belt.

If you’re looking to accentuate your waist with your clothing then it’s worth considering pieces which have belts, or expanding your belt collection, as they are a brilliantly flattering accessory for this. The belt on Duchess Sophie’s dress also added more structure alongside the lapels, which then contrasted beautifully with the flowing A-line skirt which was almost maxi-length. 

This blend of femininity and tailoring makes this such a special piece and although she could easily have tied in the white T-shirt with her best white trainers she went for court shoe heels. The shoes were by LK Bennett and were a rich tan shade that also suits the autumn months.

They had a rounded toe and though the Duchess of Edinburgh didn’t need anything warmer on this June day in 2023, anyone tempted to emulate her style right now might want to consider a pair of tan ankle or knee high boots instead. To make this outfit even warmer, a cardigan over the dress and top would be perfect - as would a longline coat in the depths of winter.

Her Royal Highness finished off her look with a khaki and turquoise top handle bag by Sophie Hapsburg for a pop of colour and wore her hair in practical updo. Sadly, we’ve not seen this outfit combination from her since last summer, it’s still one of Duchess Sophie’s best looks and we can’t help hoping she’ll re-style it for autumn.

As we edge towards September, many of us are keeping a close eye out for pieces to add to our autumn collection. Angelina Jolie, it seems, is already set for the new season though – her latest outfit offering a twist on a classic autumn coat.  

Touching down in Venice for the city's iconic film festival, the actress looked effortlessly chic in black boots, cropped trousers and oversized sunglasses. But it's her Dior coat that really caught our attention, so much so it has temporarily put a pause on us dreaming of which Burberry trench coat to buy.

Outerwear can sometimes feel like you're having to compromise on style for comfort, but Angelina’s unusual trench proves wardrobe basics don’t have boring – the unusual sleeve length paired classic trench is making us want to add one to our own autumn capsule wardrobe.

Kate Middleton's combination of a short Burberry trench coat with sheer black tights and stiletto heels that she wore back in 2011 is an endlessly elegant look that we can't ever see going out of style. 

Delving into the royal fashion archives never fails to provide us with outfit inspiration and Princess Catherine's chic trench coat look from 2011 is one we're still dreaming of and keen to replicate.

The future Queen gave us a masterclass in impeccable formal dressing for a royal engagement at City Hall in Belfast, teaming a statement Burberry trench coat with a cosy all-black outfit.

Princess Catherine wore the double-breasted coat fastened with a tied waist belt for a streamlined silhouette, proving that your best trench coat is a style essential for smart chilly weather dressing.
