The Academy Awards - often known as the Oscars - is undoubtedly Hollywood's biggest night, and taking home a gong is a career-defining moment for any A-lister. But the winners are often a topic of controversy so it might surprise you that some of these big names have never won an award.

The Academy Awards have been going since 1929 and were first televised in 1953. 

It's when the crème de la crème of the acting world brings their top fashion game, aware that, for one night only, all eyes are focused on Hollywood for the historic ceremony. When it comes to some of the best red carpet moments of all time, one no doubt thinks of the Oscars

And while no other award ceremony brings the same level of star power, there are plenty of icons who have yet to take home their own Oscar.

The surprising stars who have never won an Oscar

Amy Adams

Since making her breakthrough in the indie comedy Junebug back in 2005, Amy Adams has ascended the ranks to become bona fide Hollywood royalty. Starring in everything from critically hailed masterpieces, like the cerebral Arrival, to taking on iconic roles of pop culture like Superman's Lois Lane, she has been nominated for well over 100 awards. 

However, the Academy Award win is something which continues to evade the six-time nominee. 

First nominated in 2006 for Junebug, she has been nominated for Doubt in 2009, The Fighter in 2011, The Master in 2013, American Hustle in 2014 and Vice in 2019, Her track record has her tied with legendary actresses Deborah Kerr (An Affair to Remember) and Thelma Ritter (All About Eve) as the star with the second-most nominations without a win. 

Naomi Watts

British-Australian actress Naomi Watts has starred in some of the most talked about movies ever made - think the mind-bending masterpiece Mulholland Drive to horror classic The Ring. 

While she's yet to win an elusive Oscar, she has been recognised by the Academy twice - nominated for Best Actress in 2004 for 21 Grams and again in 2013 for The Impossible. 

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sure, Sarah Jessica Parker might best be known for her work on television (and her best looks on the red carpets over the years), sweeping the Emmys and the Golden Globes for Sex and the City, but there's more to her illustrious CV than CB (Carrie Bradshaw). 

Which is why it might surprise some to learn SJP has yet to receive a nomination from the Academy Awards - though her work in film has received accolades elsewhere. 

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) for The Family Stone in 2006. 

Sigourney Weaver

Regarded as one of the greatest movie stars of all time, Sigourney Weaver has been active in the industry for nearly five decades. From the sci-fi epic, Alien, to fan-favourites like Ghostbusters and Working Girl, Sigourney has won Golden Globes and a Grammy - but she's yet to win an Oscar.

Nominated three times with no win, Sigourney does hold an impressive record regarding the Oscars. She is one of 12 actors in history to receive two acting nominations in the same year, nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the same year. 

Sigourney achieved this coup in 1989, being nominated for both Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl. Her other nomination was in 1987 for Aliens. 

Tom Cruise

Perhaps the most famous movie star in modern Hollywood, Tom Cruise has been filling out cinemas for decades - yet he's never secured himself an Oscar win. 

He has, however, been nominated three times. His nominations have included nods for Best Actor for Born on the Fourth of July in 1990 and Jerry Maguire in 1997, and for Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia in 2000. 

His films have grossed over $11.5 billion worldwide (as of February 2024), so it's highly likely the Top Gun star isn't too cut up about missing out on the Oscar. 

Kristin Scott Thomas

Recognised for playing tough, no-nonsense women, Kristin Scott Thomas is one of the premiere British actresses. 

Winning fans for beloved classics like Four Weddings and a Funeral and appearing in the very first Mission: Impossible, Kristin's career has included plaudits for film, television and theatre.

Dame Kristin - made a Dame Commander in 2015 - might not have an Oscar, but she was nominated for Best Actress for The English Patient. The award went to Frances McDormand for Fargo.  

While no Oscar, her enviable career has seen her amass five BAFTA and five Olivier nominations. 

Laura Linney

Manhattan-born and bred, Laura Linney is a popular choice for some of the most dynamic shows and movies. 

She's perhaps best known to fans for starring in the television series The Big C as well as Netflix's Ozark. Film roles have included Love, Actually and The Truman Show. 

Laura Linney has been nominated three times by the Academy - twice for Best Actress (You Can Count on Me, The Savages) and once for Best Supporting Actress (Kinsey). 

While an Oscar evades her (for now), she has won two Golden Globe Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards, plus received five Tony Award nominations. 

Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley reigned as queen of the period drama for a while, wowing audiences and critics alike in films like Atonement (2007) and The Duchess (2008). 

For her career, spanning major franchises like Pirates of the Caribbean, the British star has received nominations for two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, three Golden Globe Awards, one Screen Actors Guild Award and one Laurence Olivier Award.

She was nominated for Best Actress in 2005 for her star turn as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (the award went to Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line) and Best Supporting Actress for 2014's The Imitation Game (the award went to Patricia Arquette for Boyhood). 

Sir Ian McKellen

Sir Ian McKellen is considered one of the pre-eminent actors of the last 60 years, having starred in plays, television and films for over six decades. 

Noted for his success in Shakespearean roles, some might consider it a tragedy that the English actor has never won an Oscar... though he has been nominated twice. 

Sir Ian - who was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1991 - was nominated for Best Actor in 1999's Gods and Monsters and Best Supporting Actor for 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. 

No Oscar, but Sir Ian has scooped a Tony Award, six Olivier Awards, and a Golden Globe Award, plus, five BAFTA and five Emmy nominations.

Helena Bonham Carter

Famous for her quirky, unique fashion sense and love for similarly unusual roles, Helena Bonham Carter's career has been long and varied. 

An unmistakable figure for thirty years, Helena Bonham Carter has starred in hits like Fight Club, Sweeney Todd and Alice in Wonderland. 

For her work, she has earned two Oscar nominations: Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for 1997's The Wings of the Dove and 2010's The King's Speech, respectively.

The Best Actress award went to Helen Hunt for As Good as it Gets and the Best Supporting Actress went to Melissa Leo for The Fighter. 

Diane Lane

Diane Lane's road to stardom is something of a Hollywood story in itself. 

The New York City native's first few roles weren't the successes many hoped for, and her career had a few false starts. But she quickly pivoted and won acclaim for roles in television, including picking up an Emmy nomination for the Western miniseries Lonesome Dove. 

After this, Diane continued to find success in films like The Perfect Storm and Under the Tuscan Sun. 

Her one and only Oscar nomination was for 2002's Unfaithful, starring alongside Richard Gere as a wife who throws her life awry with a dangerous and passionate fling. 

Nicole Kidman won that year for her work in The Hours. 

Toni Collette

Australian star Toni Collette has earned numerous accolades throughout her career - but taking home an Oscar is (for now) not one. 

The Muriel's Wedding star has, however, picked up a Golden Globe Award from six nominations, a Primetime Emmy Award from four nominations, and a Screen Actors Guild Award from four nominations. 

She was recognised by the Academy with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for 2000's The Sixth Sense, however, the award went to Angelina Jolie for her work in Girl, Interrupted. 

Harrison Ford

In his career spanning seven decades, many might be surprised to learn Harrison Ford has only been nominated for one Oscar. 

Despite having played some of the most iconic cinematic characters of all time, including Star Wars' Han Solo, Indiana Jones, and the protagonist of the Blade Runner films, Harrison's only Oscar nom came in 1986 for Witness. 

That year, William Hurt took home the award for Kiss of the Spider Woman. 

Julie Walters

An icon in British entertainment - having made her name in classic TV shows like Dinnerladies - Julie Walters is also a force in Hollywood, having starred in films like Mamma Mia! and the Harry Potter franchise. 

Julie Walters has picked up two Oscar nominations over the years - one for Best Actress in 1984's Educating Rita (with the award ultimately going to Shirley MacLaine for Terms of Endearment) and one for Best Supporting Actress for 2001's Billy Elliot. Marcia Gay Harden won that year. 

Despite no Oscar, she has won the BAFTA for Best Actress four times, more than any other performer. Julie Walters and Helen Mirren are the only actresses to have won this award three consecutive times, and Julie is tied with Judi Dench for most nominations in the category with seven.

Uma Thurman

Uma Thurman rose to prominence as a model, landing on the covers of British Vogue in 1985 and 1986. This led to her first film role, in 1988's Dangerous Liaisons, and the rest, as they say, is history. 

Uma has become one of the most recognisable actresses working, starring in everything from 1997's Batman & Robin to 2003's Kill Bill. 

Uma's one and only Oscar nomination came in 1995. She was up for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Pulp Fiction. Dianne Wiest won that year, for Bullets over Broadway. 

Lily Tomlin

Arguably one of the most decorated names on this list - and working in the business today - Lily Tomlin has been nominated for the prestigious EGOT. 

The Grace & Frankie star has won the Emmy, Grammy and Tony, but her only Oscar nomination came in 1976. She was up for Best Supporting Actress for Nashville. The award went to Lee Grant for Shampoo. 

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp's films have grossed over $8 billion worldwide, making him one of Hollywood's biggest box office draws. 

Despite star turns in Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Johnny has yet to take home an Oscar. 

He has been nominated three times for Best Actor - for the first Pirates of the Caribbean in 2004, for Finding Neverland in 2005 and for Sweeney Todd in 2008. 

Taraji P. Henson

Taraji P. Henson has received countless awards and nominations throughout her career, but the Academy Award remains elusive (for now). 

She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. That year, the award went to Penelope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona. 

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston is perhaps one of the finest examples of a star transitioning from early fame in television to success in the movies. 

Her films have earned over $1.6 billion worldwide and she was nominated for a Golden Globe for 2014's Cake. The role was a departure from the Jennifer Aniston fans had gotten used to with Friends, as she played a woman struggling with addiction in the face of chronic pain. 

While many thought she could've landed a nomination that year, Jennifer has yet to win or be nominated for an Oscar. 

Sharon Stone

Sharon Stone became one of the most popular symbols of Hollywood in the 1990s, thanks in part to her work in sexy thrillers like Basic Instinct. 

While that is arguably her most well-known work, Sharon Stone received some of the best praise of her career for 1995's Casino, where she played the trophy wife of Robert De Niro's gangster. 

For her work in the movie, Sharon was nominated for Best Actress. The Oscar went to Susan Sarandon for Dead Man Walking. 

Judy Garland

From The Wizard of Oz to her timeless singing voice, Judy Garland is an enduring pop culture icon despite the shocking fact she never won an Academy Award. 

Judy was nominated twice - for Best Actress in 1954's A Star is Born and Best Supporting Actress in 1961's Judgment at Nuremberg. 

She lost in 1954 to Grace Kelly and in 1961 to Rita Moreno. 

Madonna

While reactions to Madonna's acting career have been mixed (to say the least), there's no denying that when the Queen of Pop gets it right, she really delivers. 

Madonna received widespread acclaim for her work in Evita, even scoring the Best Actress Golden Globe. However, despite being what many suspected was a frontrunner to be nominated for an Academy Award at the time, Madonna wasn't on the list. 

If Madonna wants that elusive Oscar soon, she can always go the Lady Gaga or Elton John route. These musical stars have won for writing or composing an Oscar-winning song.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe might just be the most famous woman in history - or, at least, one of the most recognisable. 

An icon of pop culture with a legacy that only seems to grow as the decades go by, Marilyn is the embodiment of Hollywood's Golden Age - but she actually never scooped the most coveted award in the industry. 

Marilyn did win a Golden Globe for Some Like it Hot, among other awards, but she was never nominated by the Academy. 

Margot Robbie

Australian actress Margot Robbie started out on Aussie soap Neighbours, but quickly became one of Hollywood's newest leading ladies. 

Her breakout role in Hollywood was opposite Leonard DiCaprio in 2013's Wolf of Wall Street, and she's been starring in box-office hits and critically acclaimed roles ever since. 

Margot has been nominated for two Oscars - Best Actress for 2018's I, Tonya and Best Supporting Actress for 2020's Bombshell.

For the 2024 Academy Awards, Margot found herself in the eye of a storm after many suggested she should've been nominated for her work in Barbie. 

Margot addressed her supposed snub during a SAG-AFTRA discussion saying "There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed."

Scarlett Johansson

Another potential surprise on the list is Scarlett Johansson, who has starred in everything from box office juggernauts like the Avengers films to critically acclaimed masterpieces. Indeed, her films have collectively grossed over $14.3 billion worldwide, making her the highest-grossing box office star of all time.

That, it seems, isn't enough for her to claim an Academy Award though. 

Scarlett's two nominations - for Best Actress in Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress in Jojo Rabbit - both came in 2020, making her just one of twelve stars to be nominated twice for acting in the same year. 

Jennifer Lopez

As her best looks over the years prove, Jennifer Lopez has been a fixture at awards shows for decades. However, the multi-faceted talent has yet to win an Oscar. 

While she hasn't been nominated for her work in films like Hustlers and Out of Sight, she remains the only female entertainer to have a number-one album and film at the same time in the United States. Her album, J. Lo, topped the charts the same time her romcom, The Wedding Planner, ruled the box office.

Known for both music and acting, Jennifer Lopez's breakthrough role was in Selena (1997), which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress. With the role, JLo also became the first Latin actress to earn over $1 million for a film role.

Michelle Williams

A regular name at the major award shows each year, Michelle Williams has been nominated for seven Golden Globe awards (winning two), four BAFTA awards, two Emmy awards (winning one) and five Academy Awards. 

Her Oscar nominations have included three for Best Actress and two for Best Supporting Actress. In order, they were...

• 2006 - Best Supporting Actress for Brokeback Mountain. The award went to Rachel Weisz for The Constant Gardener
• 2011 - Best Actress for Blue Valentine. The award went to Natalie Portman for Black Swan
• 2012 - Best Actress for My Week with Marilyn. The award went to Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady
• 2017 - Best Supporting Actress for Manchester by the Sea. The award went to Viola Davis for Fences

Rachel McAdams

Canadian actress Rachel McAdams got her start working on shows in her home country before rising to worldwide fame in 2004, thanks to back-to-back roles in two iconic classics - Mean Girls and The Notebook. 

Winning praise for her work in movies including Midnight in Paris (2011) and Are You There God, it's me, Margaret? (2023), Rachel McAdams' only Oscar nomination (so far) has been for 2015's Spotlight. 

Playing a reporter for the Boston Globe as they broke the scandal of historic child sex abuse by the Catholic church, the film would win Best Original Screenplay at the ceremony, but Rachel lost out to Alicia Vikander for her performance in The Danish Girl. 

Salma Hayek

The bombshell actress, Salma Hayek, made history as the first Mexican actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002's Frida, where she played legendary painter Frida Kahlo. 

The award went to Nicole Kidman, for her performance in The Hours. 

Still, Salma has defied typecast, going from roles heavily focused on her sex appeal to winning plaudits including a BAFTA nomination, a Golden Globe nomination, four Emmy nominations and one Emmy win.

Bette Midler

Perhaps another major shock inclusion is Bette Midler - a legend revered for both her acting and singing prowess. 

Known for timeless classics including Beaches, The First Wives Club and The Rose, Bette has been nominated for the elusive and exclusive EGOT - winning three of the four. 

With three Grammys, three Emmys and two Tonys to her name, Bette is just shy of an Oscar - though she has been nominated twice. 

Her Best Actress nominations have been for 1979's The Rose (with the award going to Sally Field for Norma Rae) and 1991's For the Boys (the Oscar went to Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs).

Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer is easily one of the most prolific film stars, having earned a dazzling reputation for her work over four decades. 

Legendary turns in movies such as Scarface and The Witches of Eastwick have proven her versatility and refusal to be typecast in just femme fatale or sexier roles. 

Throughout her career, Michelle has won one BAFTA from three nominations, one Golden Globe from nine nominations and been nominated for an Emmy. She has also been nominated for three Academy Awards. 

Her first nomination was a Best Supporting Actress nod in 1989 for her performance in Dangerous Liaisons. The Oscar went to Geena Davis for The Accidental Tourist. 

Her next two nominations were both for Best Actress. In 1990, she was nominated for The Fabulous Baker Boys, with the award instead going to Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy, and in 1993 she was nominated for Love Field, with the gong going to Emma Thompson for Howards End. 

Glenn Close

Glenn Close holds a record which is both impressive and, no doubt, mildly frustrating for the star. 

She ties with Peter O'Toole for holding the most ever Oscar nominations in acting categories without a win. Both stars have been nominated eight times. Her eight nominations also make her one of the most nominated actresses in Academy Award history, joint fourth. 

Meryl Streep has a total of 21 nominations, Katharine Hepburn has 12, Bette Davis has 10 and Glenn - along with Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench and Geraldine Page - has eight.

It's a huge honour to even be nominated - never mind on eight separate occasions, and the Fatal Attraction star has talked openly about her streak of not winning. 

Speaking to the Associated Press in 2021, Glenn said of headlines reportedly referring to her as a "loser", "First of all, I don’t think I’m a loser. Who in that category is a loser? You’re there, you’re five people honoured for the work that you’ve done by your peers. What’s better than that?”

"And I honestly feel that the press likes to have winners and losers. And then they say, ‘Who is the worst dressed?’ And, you know, ‘Who made the worst speech?’ Forget it. It’s not what it’s about. I say, f*** them!"

Glenn has been nominated for The World According to Garp in 1983, The Big Chill in 1984, The Natural in 1985, Fatal Attraction in 1988, Dangerous Liaisons in 1989, Albert Nobbs in 2012, The Wife in 2019 and Hillbilly Elegy in 2021.

This past weekend’s Academy Awards were filled with memorable moments that involved both film stars and other guests.

From Jamie Lee Curtis’ first-ever Oscar win to Lady Gaga’s makeup-less performance, folks are still talking about one of the most important nights in Hollywood - but it’s a short bit involving humanitarian Malala Yousafzai, who was in the audience alongside her husband Asser Malik, that has garnered much attention and praise.

During one of his skits, host Jimmy Kimmel took to walking by audience members and, when approaching the 25-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, he asked her about the infamous Harry Styles-spitting-on-Chris-Pine episode that made headlines during the actors' Don't Worry Darling press tour.

"As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, I was wondering, do you think Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?" Jimmy asked. 

Malala, who was one of the best dressed attendees at the Oscars 2023, simply answered, "I only talk about peace." Talk about a perfect comeback.

Folks quickly took to social media to denounce Jimmy’s tasteless joke, reminding the world of the difficult life that Malala has had and the accomplishments that she lays claim to that should have, perhaps, been highlighted during her brief moment on camera at the awards show.

As a reminder, back in 2012, while on a bus after taking an exam in Pakistan, Malala and two other girls were shot in the face by a Taliban in an assassination attempt in reaction to her activism.

Admitted to the hospital in critical condition, the then 15-year-old Malala eventually got better and actually used her newfound recognition to propel her cause forward and fight for women's right to education all around the world. 

The year before, in 2013, she chronicled her experiences in her memoir I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, and, the year after, at just 17, she became the youngest person ever to receive a Nobel Prize.

Clearly, despite his having to comedically entertain an audience, Jimmy could have chosen a different topic to discuss on air with Malala - as demonstrated by the number of comments on Twitter criticizing the host’s actions.

"This girl didn't survive a bullet to the face to hear about pointless pop culture drama," someone wrote. 

“Not a good question, but beautifully answered by Malala," another user noted.

Yet another simply commented, "My least favorite part of the show. A missed opportunity by Jimmy Kimmel. He had an opportunity to talk to a survivor, an author & Nobel Prize Winner. A tasteless question."

"Full offense malala was SHOT by the taliban in her FACE and she has an oscar nominated documentary and is the youngest nobel prize winner and you’re asking her about *reads notes* SPITGATE?????," a fourth user tweeted.

Interestingly enough, on her own Twitter profile, Malala herself shared an article published on Jezebel that argues it was "perfectly fine" for Jimmy to ask her to gossip while at the event - which may indicate where the humanitarian stands on the whole ordeal.

Malala, however, makes no reference to the episode in the diary that she penned for British Vogue about her experience at the Oscars. She did, however, express how excited she was about meeting Rihanna. "Her performance was amazing and I was so excited to see her in person!," she wrote in the chronicle.

Wherever Malala herself stands on the Jimmy-at-the-Oscars debacle, one thing is for sure: the woman has tons of charisma and class.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ first ever Oscar win has finally come to pass as the acclaimed actor won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. 

From the Oscars 2023 best dressed to what’s inside the 2023 Oscars gift bag the star-studded awards were every bit as glamorous and exciting as we’ve come to expect. And when it comes to the winners arguably the night belonged to Everything Everywhere All at Once which scooped no fewer than seven Oscars. This included Jamie Lee Curtis’ first ever Oscar win with her award in the Best Supporting Actress Category for her role as IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre in the Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert movie. 

Taking to the stage to accept this huge accolade, Jamie Lee Curtis was visibly moved and her tearful speech ended with a shout-out to her late parents in whose footsteps she’s followed. 

“My mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories. I just won an Oscar,” she exclaimed, looking up perhaps in a nod to them watching over her. 

Jamie Lee Curtis’ iconic parents were Tony Curtis, who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for The Defiant Ones, and Janet Leigh, who was nominated in the same category as Jamie for her portrayal of Marion Crane in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Now Jamie Lee Curtis’ first ever Oscar win has seen her take home an award they would doubtless be incredibly proud of. 

Speaking to PEOPLE at the Independent Spirit Awards ahead of the Oscars 2023, Jamie Lee reflected on what it was like to be nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, just like her “legendary” mom Janet. 

She declared, "You know, I didn't think about that. I mean, I knew it, I was aware of it. I never thought that would happen. Like my parents and their fame and their stardom was so legendary that I've never felt like I would be anywhere near the level. It's a beautiful link. It's a lineage link."

Jamie Lee Curtis’ first ever Oscar win was the perfect opportunity to honor both of her beloved parents. Though the Best Supporting Actress began her speech with a powerful tribute to her Everything Everywhere All at Once co-stars and colleagues.

“I know it looks like I’m standing up here by myself but I am not, I am hundreds of people. I’m hundreds of people,” she said. “I’m the Daniels [writers and directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert], Jonathan, Ley Line, the entire crew, my bae Michelle [Yeoh, who won Best Actress], Ke [Huy Quan, who won Best Supporting Actor], Steph [Hsu], the entire group of artists who made this movie - WE just won an Oscar!” 

She went on to thank others close to her including her agent, her “beautiful husband” Christopher Guest, as well as his and Jamie Lee Curtis’ daughters Ruby and Annie and her sister Kelly. Her Oscars win was one of seven for Everything Everywhere All at Once which also won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.

Lady Gaga removed her glamorous makeup and changed out of her red carpet dress into ripped jeans and a T-shirt to give a stripped back performance of Hold My Hand at the Oscars 2023.

Earlier in the night, the singer took to the red carpet at the 95th Academy Awards looking super glam in a sheer black Versace gown, teamed with a bold red lip and heavy black eyeliner.

But when she took to the stage to give a performance of her Oscar-nominated song Hold My Hand, from the Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, she showed off her natural skin with no makeup, while sporting ripped black jeans and a plain black T-shirt.

She teamed the casual outfit with a pair of simple black Converse trainers, with her hair pulled back into a tight braid.

Before she started singing, Lady Gaga addressed the audience, telling them how personal the song is to her.

She said, "It's deeply personal for me and I think that we all need each other, we need a lot of love to walk through this life.

"And we all need a hero sometimes, there's heroes all around us. In unassuming places, but you might find that you can be your own hero, even if you feel broken inside."

The stripped back performance was dedicated to the late 'Top Gun' director Tony Scott and at the end, a photo of him alongside Tom Cruise appeared, with the words: “In memory of Tony Scott.”

This year, the Oscars broke tradition for the first time in over six decades by not making the red carpet red. Instead, they swapped the bold hue they've used since 1961 - which is officially known as Academy Red - for a soft champagne color. 

Referencing Will Smith’s famous slap, host Jimmy Kimmel offered up one explanation why the carpet has changed for the first time since 1961.

He joked, "I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet rather than a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed.”

This, of course, is not the actual reason. The decision to use the "soothing" and "mellow" tone was a practical one, so that the carpet could easily work for the day-to-night event and not clash with the orange tent that is erected over the carpet to shield the guests from sun or rain.

"We had to first come up with the tent and what color that would be," red carpet creative consultant Lisa Love told Hollywood Reporter.

"In order to block the light, that had to be a darker color. You’ve seen it as a sienna or saffron-colored sienna, which connotes the color of sunset. Where do you see the sunset best? From the sandy beaches with a glass of champagne in your hand. This is about getting ready for the golden hour that follows the show."

If anyone has earned the right to truly just let her hair down and enjoy the Oscars this weekend, it’s Nicole Kidman.

A five time Academy Award nominee (and one time winner, for her work in 2003’s The Hours) Nicole has navigated the industry for over four decades.

She has even translated her success from the big screen to the small screen, picking up two Emmys for her work in Big Little Lies.

So, it’s fair to say her track record speaks for itself.

Which could be why the Australian icon is just enjoying this weekend and having fun.

It all started with an incredibly sultry Instagram snap. With her hair tied back in a messy ponytail, Nicole sat on a chair looking extra leggy.

While she rocked a jacket, a long necklace and what appeared to be a lacy looking top, Nicole’s legs stole the show as she crossed them seductively in a pair of dark tights.

Nicole captioned the shot, “Saturday Night.”

Our Saturday night looked quite different, but that’s the power of Nicole Kidman.

Fans flooded her comments with praise for the powerful and confident shot.

One wrote, “Legs for days!” while another pointed out that Nicole appears to have skipped the aging process, writing “Father Time called, your [sic] late on your aging.”

Now, from Saturday night sultriness to Sunday evening smooches, Nicole kept the same energy while on the Oscars 2023 Champagne carpet.

Nicole, who wore a black Armani Privé gown with silver flower details, packed on the PDA with husband Keith Urban.

She must have been feeling herself as she later shared some saucy behind-the-scenes snaps while the ceremony was taking place. 

Fans got a better look at Nicole's edgier outfit and relaxed hairstyle, with fans commenting that she looked just like she did back in her cult-favorite movie 90s, Practical Magic. 

One wrote, "This is your hair girl. You are embodying practical magic Nicole rn" while another added, "Practical Magic vibes."

It was a different look than has come to be expected from the Moulin Rouge! star, who completed her look with a loose waved hairstyle.

Nicole’s rock-chick look could explain why she was feeling extra frisky with her country singer hubby, to whom she’s been married for 16 years.

Nicole and Keith were wed on June 25, 2006, at Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel on the grounds of St Patrick's Estate in Manly, Sydney.

And you might not be the only one keeping up through our blog. This is because being a Hollywood A-lister doesn’t guarantee you an invitation to the glitzy bash. In fact, some big names have found themselves banned from the ceremony before.

And then there are some, like Goldie Hawn, who chose not to attend even when they were invited – and nominated.

Which celebrities have found themselves in the Academy’s bad books in the past?

Why was Richard Gere banned from the Oscars?

Richard Gere has starred in some of our favorite movies of all time, from classic romantic comedies like Pretty Woman and An Officer and a Gentleman to thrillers including Primal Fear.

He’s one of the most bankable leading men in movies but he was banned from attending the Oscars for a staggering twenty years.  

The American Gigolo star was handed the two-decade ban in 1993 after he denounced the Chinese government onstage at the ceremony.

Taking to the stage, Richard, who is a practicing Tibetan Buddhist, hit out at China’s ongoing conflict with the predominantly Buddhist region of Tibet.

The actor went on stage and, in a moment that could only happen on live television, went off script saying, "With the knowledge of the horrendous human rights situation in China and Tibet, I wonder every day if we could send love, truth and sanity to Deng Xiaoping. Right now in Beijing, if maybe he will take his troops, get them out of Tibet and allow these people to go back to living as free and independent people."

A controversial statement to make at the best of times, but considering Richard was only on stage to present the Oscar for Art Direction, it was considered a step too far by the Academy.

Who else has been handed bans from the Academy?

Will Smith

This year’s Oscars already have a crisis team ready thanks to Will Smith and *that* slap.

If you happened to miss it – and seriously, how? – last year, the Men in Black actor slapped comedian Chris Rock live on air.

Will lost his temper after Chris cracked a few jokes at the expense of Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.  

After the incident made headlines and set social media ablaze, the Oscars was quick to announce that Will is not permitted to attend any events held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the next ten years.

Carmine Caridi

Star of The Godfather Part II, Carmine Caridi has the dubious honor of being the first person expelled from the Academy altogether.

In 2004, he was kicked out after it was revealed he was producing copies of preview screeners of nominated movies. The FBI investigated the actor after copies of Something’s Gotta Give, The Last Samurai, Mystic River, Big Fish and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World were said to have been traced back to him.

The other people banned have been done so for more nefarious reasons.

• Bill Cosby was banned after allegations of sexual assaults
• Director Romano Polanski was expelled from the Academy in 2018, more than 40 years after he was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl
• Harvey Weinstein was permanently banned in 2017 after he was accused and charged with countless cases of sexual assault.

Ahead of the 95th Oscars coming up this Sunday, March 12, we're taking a look at some of the craziest moments from past Oscars.

Award shows are wonderful viewing experiences for fans for a lot of reasons. For one, it's great to see your favorite stars and creatives get recognized for their outstanding work in the entertainment industry - and it's even more fun to predict who will take home the awards. 

Another thing we love about award shows is that they happen live - which means anything strange could happen at a moment's notice. Sometimes, we even get treated to moments that become legendary in award show history.

In honor of the 2023 Oscars set to take place on Sunday, March 12, we're traveling back in time to recall some of the funniest, most random, strangest, and truly most chaotic moments in recent Oscar history. Buckle up, you're in for a ride. 

1. "Adele Dazeem"

Of course we had to mention this one - it's one of the most quotable mess-ups in award show history. 

During the 2014 Oscars, John Travolta got on stage to introduce Idina Menzel, who was set to perform Let It Go from that year's Disney blockbuster smash, Frozen. 

Instead of pronouncing her name correctly (read: Eye-deen-uh Men-zell), he came up with a pronunciation of his own. 

"Please welcome the wickedly talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem," he says, introducing the Tony award-winning actress. 

This flub, even almost a decade later, is still hailed as one of the funniest moments in Oscars history. 

2. Angelina Jolie: "I'm so in love with my brother right now"

In 2000, Angelina Jolie won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in Girl, Interrupted. 

During her acceptance speech, the star wanted to thank all of the people who had supported her and helped her along the way - which, of course, is reasonable. One of those people was her brother - but the way she articulated her gratitude in her speech came out sort of... well, strange. 

"I'm in shock. And I'm so in love with my brother right now," she starts off. "He just held me and said he loved me and I know he's so happy for me."

The sentiment is nice, and we understand what she was saying - but fans, even still to this day, wish she would have phrased it slightly differently.

3. Rob Lowe and Snow White sing a duet

The 1989 Oscars opening performance was truly a sight to behold, to say the least. 

Allan Carr, a Hollywood producer who made the seminal film Grease, also produced the opening number for the 1989 Oscars ceremony - and this 11-minute performance is a serious fever dream. 

Eileen Bowman, who does a truly chilling performance as Snow White, leads the song as she takes the celebrity-packed audience through her version of Hollywood. The stage triumph included dancing tables, salsa dancing, an appearance from Lucille Ball.

The icing on the cake, however, is a young and handsome Rob Lowe singing a duet with Snow White, where he tells her that he wants to get to know more about her - to the tune of Proud Mary, nonetheless. 

If you don't believe us when we say this 11-minute number is a fever dream waiting to be perceived, you'll just have to watch it for yourself. 

4. Will Smith slaps Chris Rock

You knew this one was coming. In case you missed it (really though?!) at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, addressing her bald head, which she recently shaved due to an alopecia diagnosis. 

This prompted Will Smith to get out of his seat, walk up on stage, and slap Chris Rock right across the face. 

The event consequentially prompted the Academy to create a "crisis team" in case of emergencies at future ceremonies. 

5. Nicole Kidman's meme-able clapping

At the 2017 Oscars, Nicole Kidman arrived looking absolutely flawless in an Armani gown, and boasted over 119 carats of jewels on her body that night. Needless to say, she was carrying some precious cargo. 

When that year's host Jimmy Kimmel began announcing names and awards, the cameras started picking up on something striking about Nicole - and no, it wasn't her stunning Oscars look. People began noticing that Nicole Kidman was clapping very strangely, in a fashion that almost gives off Slenderman vibes. 

For some reason, she was clapping as though she had just gotten her nails done, trying not to mess up the fresh mani. Fans have speculated whether she was clapping so strangely because she was trying not to damage the jewels that were so intricately placed for her look - but either way, it's pretty damn funny. 

6. Naked man on stage in 1974

Sometimes at the Oscars, you see your favorite celebrities dressed to the nines in couture, designer gowns - and sometimes you see naked men running around on stage. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. 

As British actor David Niven went to present an award at the 1974 Oscars ceremony, he is suddenly joined on stage by a man who is completely naked. The man runs across the stage, leaving David Niven and audience aghast. 

"Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen," he says cleverly. 

7. La La Land/Moonlight best picture mishap

Who could forget this equally horrific and awkward moment in Oscars history?

At the 2017 Oscars, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway graced the stage to present the audience with the best picture award for that year. 

After much anticipation, they announce that La La Land, which was met with high praise from fans, won best picture. The whole cast and crew, including director Damien Chazelle who recently directed Babylon, stormed the stage, celebrating this accomplishment by giving their gratuitous speeches to the crowd. 

Unfortunately, about two minutes into this endeavor, some of the cast and crew were informed that there had been a mistake - Moonlight was supposed to have received the award, not La La Land. 

You have to watch the event unfold for yourself to see just how chaotic it is. 

8. The controversial "We Saw Your Boobs" song

Oh, where to begin with this one?

At the 2013 Oscars, Seth MacFarlane, who is the mind behind comedy shows like Family Guy, hosted the ceremony - leaving fans to guess what chaos would ensue that night. 

The opening song for the ceremony certainly made some audience members do a double-take, as Seth performed a little original song titled, We Saw Your Boobs. 

Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like - Seth MacFarlane pointing out every actress who has appeared topless in movies. He references Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, and Angelina Jolie, to name simply a few of the many A-listers who have gone topless in films in the past. 

Some actresses found it quite funny - Jennifer Lawrence has said she "loved" the boob song. Some, however, were quite offended. Just watch the video above and look out for Naomi Watson's face when Seth mentions her naked appearance in Mulholland Drive. 

Not only does Seth MacFarlane perform this controversial ditty in front of all of Hollywood's A-list creative minds - he also brought out back-up dancers and the Los Angeles Gay Men's Chorus to help him perform the tune. 

9. Jennifer Lawrence takes a tumble

Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, in 2013, let's not forget her tumble up the Oscar stairs when accepting her award for best actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

The actress, who is certainly known for her humorous and light-hearted demeanor, accidentally took a fall while walking up to the stage - and honestly, we can't blame her. Those gowns have to be a challenge to walk in!

Luckily, the audience clapped for her and continued to support her as she continued on to accept her award. "You guys are just standing up because I fell and that's really embarrassing," she said with a laugh when she got on stage.

10. Roberto Benigni wins best actor - and has *quite* the reaction

At the 1999 Oscars, Roberto Benigni's film Life is Beautiful was up for the award for best foreign language film. When Roberto won, he decided to celebrate with truly the most impressive display of enthusiasm we've ever seen. 

Not only did Roberto get up out of his seat to accept his award - but he also decided to cascade himself over the audience, climbing over the seats and raising his hands in the air. Audience members helped him literally rise above the crowd, as he took steps over the seats and the heads of Hollywood's biggest stars, before coming down and hopping up on stage (again, literally) to accept his award. Talk about a reaction of pure joy!

Sheree Zampino has broken her silence on ex-husband Will Smith's assault on Chris Rock at the Oscars, calling fans to forgive the Hollywood actor. 

The American actress has called for 'forgiveness' for the King Richard star after he attacked Chris Rock at the Oscars 2022 and insisted that she continues to 'support' him despite the incident. 

Sheree, 54, divorced Will Smith in 1995 after three years of marriage but has remained good friends with her ex-hubby ever since. She has now spoken out about the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star's behavior at the 94th Academy Awards, telling the Daily Mail that she hopes "people allow him to be human." 

"I really hope for that because I stand in support of him, we are on good terms," she said. "You cannot heal without forgiveness."

Her encouraging words come shortly after Will Smith released an apology video, entitled, "It's been a minute...", on Youtube. 

In the nearly-six-minute long clip, the 53-year-old emotionally answered questions from fans on the incident and said he is "deeply remorseful" for what will likely go down as one of the most controversial Oscars moments ever. He apologized to both Chris Rock and Chris Rock's mother, before admitting he has spent the past three months "replaying and understanding the nuances and the complexities of what happened in that moment." He also said sorry to his wife, Jada, and their two children, Jaden and Willow, as well as the other nominees and winners of the night. 

Both the audience and viewers watching at home were stunned to see Will Smith ascend the stage of the iconic awards show and slap host Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's alopecia. Will Smith tearfully apologized in his Oscars acceptance speech for Best Actor later that night, before being banned from the Hollywood event for 10 years. 

Sheree, who shares a 29-year-old son named Trey with Will, was also keen to remind the public of her ex-husband's good qualities. 

"He's been in the business since 16 with Fresh Prince Of Bel Air," she said. "He gives so generously, he puts love into everything he does, he's so gracious so kind, he has heart connection to his fans. He has given us years of laughter." 

Helen Mirren has revealed her outfit regret at the 1995 Oscars, after admittedly failing to understand the dress code of the prestigious awards ceremony. 

The British actor may be regarded as one of the world's most stylish celebrities,  but that doesn't mean she stands by every one of her wardrobe choices. 

Speaking to the Telegraph, Helen expressed her regret over wearing a hat - yes, a hat - to the 1995 Academy Awards. 

The 76-year-old made the hilarious confession during a reflection on her appreciation of head accessories on the red carpet - so long as they don't completely cover her hair. It comes shortly after Helen Mirren wowed in neon pink cape and clashing yellow dress at Cannes, proving you're never too old to try out the fashion color trends of 2022. 

"I don’t know what possessed me!" she admitted. "I thought it was like going to an English wedding, or even Royal Ascot. I’ve never worn one on the red carpet since." 

The accessory in question was a white fascinator which, as Helen implied, wouldn't have been out of place at one of the Queen's garden parties or a Royal Family wedding. 

The legendary movie star, whose performance in The Madness of King George landed her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1995, paired the fancy headgear with a shoulder-padded white jacket and a matching long skirt. 

She completed the ivory ensemble with a touch of red lipstick, black eyeliner, and a gold clutch purse. Despite appearing pleased at the time, she has never recreated the look - and it looks like she has no plans to do so any time soon. 

"I haven't worn one [a hat] on the red carpet since," she admitted. 

While hats appear to be forever off-limits, Helen hasn't ruled out all head pieces. She went on to reveal her newfound passion for headbands, having "only recently discovered" the popular accessory. 

"I always worried they looked a bit Sloane Ranger so had a resistance to them, but now I think they add a lot to an outfit. I also love a scarf tied around my hair, or a turban." 

Liza Minelli's Oscar appearance alongside Lady Gaga was not quite what it seemed, as her friend reveals it wasn't at all what she'd signed up for.

After the buzz of the internationally renowned awards ceremony died down, there were a few key moments that people couldn't stop talking about. The obvious being Will Smith's attack on Chris Brown but, on the positive side of things, Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli's emotional Oscars hosting touched many hearts.

Shockingly her friend Michael Feinstein, speaking on The Jess Cagle Show on SiriusXM, said the whole thing left Liza, 'very disappointed.' Michael, who's a well-known singer and pianist, attended the ceremony with the legend of stage and screen.

Michael claims that Liza had been suffering from back pain and said she believed she's be on stage, sitting on a director's chair. “She only agreed to appear at the Oscars if she would be in a director’s chair, because she’s been having back trouble,” he explained.

The musician continued, “She said, ‘I don’t want people to see me limping out there.’ She said, ‘You know, I want to look good. I don’t want people to worry about me.’”

Liza, who presented the best picture award alongside Lady Gaga, was completely blind-sighted by the chaos of the night. After the slap, which is sure to go down as one of the most controversial Oscars moments ever, meant that there was a lot of consternation backstage, claims Michael.

He alleges that, only minutes before she was due to take to the stage, a stage manager told her she'd have to go on in a wheelchair instead of the agreed plan. 

"Liza pleaded," claimed Michael. "She said, 'No, I will not be seen in a wheelchair in front of everybody. I will not do this. I refuse to do this.' Then they said, 'Well, it’s either that or nothing.'"

Michael said the incident left her, 'shaken,' and, 'discombobulated.' "She was nervous," he said, "and it made her look like she was out of it. Can you imagine being suddenly forced to be seen by millions of people the way you don’t want to be seen? That’s what happened to her.”

Despite the moment being so well received by viewers, Liza's friend claims she was, "very disappointed that that happened, and it was not what was agreed to." 

He added, "She is really doing well and it’s a shame that it turned out that way."

Fresh from her appearance with a legend of film and stage, Liza Minnelli, leaving viewers in tears at the Oscars, Lady GaGa will once again be honoring one of showbiz’s last living legends. At the Grammys this weekend, GaGa will perform a tribute to iconic crooner, Tony Bennett.

"You didn't think we'd show up to Vegas without her, did you?" the Recording Academy tweeted Friday, confirming that Lady GaGa will be on taking to the stage at the Grammy awards.

Always one to deliver a show-stopping performance, GaGa’s attendance at the 2022 Grammys will have more of an emotional significance as she honors the great Tony Bennett, who has all but retired from music after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2016.

GaGa and Tony Bennett are nominated for awards together at the ceremony for their duet album, Love for Sale, which was heralded as the final album Tony would ever make.

Released in late 2021, Love for Sale was the second joint venture between Tony and GaGa, following their Grammy-winning album, Cheek to Cheek, released in 2014.

In November 2021, CBS aired the One Last Time concert special featuring footage from what was then revealed to be the duo's last performance together, in which Gaga emotionally escorted Bennett off stage for the final time.

"Tony, we're all so grateful to have witnessed your talent, your generosity, your creativity, your kindness, and your service through all the years," Gaga said at the event as the audience rose to its feet for the crooner. "Mr. Bennett, it would be my honor to escort you off the stage."

And now, in front of music’s biggest names, Tony Bennett will get another legendary tribute.

A source close to the awards told The Sun, “Gaga’s performance is going to be the biggest moment of the night and it will pay tribute to the brilliance of Tony. On stage, she will sing Love For Sale, the title track from their last album, which came out last year.”

“She will also perform Do I Love You, a song they previously did together. When she is singing, photographs of Tony will be beamed up onto the screen behind the stage. They are hoping he will be able to make the ceremony but it’s up in the air right now.”

How to watch the Grammys

New footage of Will Smith slapping host Chris Rock on Sunday evening has surfaced online, offering yet another perspective on perhaps one of the most controversial Oscars moments of all time. 

In the 45-second clip, which was taken by an attendee in the audience of the awards show, the A-list married couple can be seen from a behind angle. 

Jada appears to bend forward in laughter as Chris jokes, "Will Smith just smacked the sh*t out of me," right after the Hollywood legend hit the comedian for joking about his wife's alopecia. 

She then resumes a still position while Will shouts, "Keep my wife's name out of your f*cking mouth" twice at the baffled host. The shocking confrontation occurred shortly before the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Serena and Venus Williams' father, Richard, in the 2021 biopic, King Richard. 

Will tearfully apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees in his acceptance speech, before issuing a public apology to Chris Rock—who declined to file charges—the following day. 

Jada broke her silence on the controversy on Wednesday, taking to Instagram to say she's embracing a 'season for healing.' 

Chris Rock has also addressed the assault, making a brief reference to it during his stand-up show at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston yesterday. 

"I don't have a bunch of s*** to say about that, so if you came here for that...I had written a whole show before this weekend," he said. 

"I'm still processing what happened, so at some point, I'll talk about that s***. It'll be serious. It'll be funny, but right now I'm going to tell some jokes." 

It has also since been confirmed by the Academy—which has launched a formal review into the incident—that Will Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the assault, but 'refused.'

The Academy Awards have always had some of the most controversial moments, but the Oscars 2022 saw perhaps one of the most shocking of all in recent years. Though many viewers at home were likely hoping to be bowled over by the Oscars 2022 best dressed and the emotional speeches, what happened at the Oscars ceremony this year between actor Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock was completely unexpected. 

Taking to the stage, Will smacked host Chris after he compared Jada’s alopecia-related hair loss to that of Demi Moore’s character in the 1997 action film, GI Jane, in a joke perceived by some, including Will, to be deeply insensitive and offensive towards Jada.

Will Smith’s attack on Chris Rock reportedly hasn’t led to any official charges and Will Smith apologized afterwards, however it has sparked a huge discussion about toxic masculinity and misogyny.

Now Jada Pinkett Smith has broken her silence following the shocking events surrounding her husband and the joke that was made about her. Taking to Instagram, The Matrix series star didn’t directly address Will’s actions at the prestigious ceremony and the controversy surrounding them. 

However, she did appear to suggest that the time had come for “healing”. Posting a simple quote on a spring-like peach background, Jada wrote simply, “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”

Whilst the specific meaning for Jada hasn’t been confirmed, it appears to suggest that the star is looking to move on from Will’s Oscars 2022 moment and perhaps also the joke about her hair loss that motivated her husband. 

Just last year Jada debuted her shaved head and she has been open in the past about her struggle with alopecia over the years.

Opening up to her mother Adrienne and daughter Willow on an episode of her chat show, Red Table Talk, Jada explained, “And I’ll tell you it was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair, just in my hands, and I was like ‘oh my God am I going bald?’ It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear.”

She later went on to proudly show her new shaved head and revealed her and Will’s daughter Willow inspired her to take the plunge as she declared, “my 50’s are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed”.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent post certainly seems to speak of forgiveness following recent events and Will Smith has now taken to social media to share a longer apology. In it, the Best Actor winner described violence as “poisonous and destructive” and his own actions as “unacceptable and inexcusable”. 

“There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” he added.

Shortly after, Will was awarded Best Actor for his performance in King Richard, a biopic based on the father of Serena and Venus Williams. He tearfully apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees in his acceptance speech, explaining that, like his on-screen character, he was a ‘fierce defender’ of his family. 

He has also since apologized to Chris Rock, who declined to file charges, in a lengthy Instagram post. The Academy is now launching a formal review into the incident, but it appears unlikely that Will be stripped of his accolade. 

A wildfire of conversation about the limits of comedic material has followed, as some question whether or not it’s ever okay to make fun of someone’s medical condition. It’s also drawn attention to the protected status of celebrities in society, with Will facing virtually no consequences for committing a violent crime in front of millions of witnesses. 

Amidst all this chatter, there’s one phrase that has repeatedly surfaced to describe the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star’s actions. 

Will’s conduct has been widely condemned by critics as a textbook display of ‘toxic masculinity’, a term that describes harmful beliefs and behaviors men are traditionally expected to uphold. His outburst—which he said himself arose from a need to defend Jada—has largely been attributed to the narrative that it is always the man’s role to protect his family, no matter what the cost. 

Many folks have taken to Twitter to criticize Will for fuelling this old-fashioned idea, arguing that there is never a justification to assault a fellow human being.  

Not everyone believes Will is the only guilty party in the confrontation though. 

Chris Rock has also been accused of toxic masculinity for joking about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss, which has come after a history of mocking the Hollywood star in past monologues. He ridiculed Jada the last time he hosted the Oscars in 2016, remarking that there was no point in her protesting the show over its lack of diversity. 

"Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties," he quipped. "I wasn’t invited!”

Some have condemned his treatment of Jada as an example of misogynoir, a type of misogyny aimed specifically at black women. 

On Tuesday, Jada broke her silence on the situation with a short statement on Instagram. 

"This is a season for healing and I'm here for it," she told her 11.7 million followers.

Chris has yet to comment publicly, but it's understood he has still not spoken to Will about the incident.

After taking to the stage to present an award, comedian Chris Rock comedian made a joke about Will Smith's wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Making reference to the title character of the film GI Jane, who had a shaved head, he said he was excited for the second installment of the movie.

Jada was clearly not amused and who could blame the star, who opened up about her experience of hair thinning and alopecia in the past.

Will then took to the stage and slapped the shocked-looking host who said, “Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.” The actor was then seen shouting, "Get my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.”

The awkwardness continued when he took to the stage again, but this time for winning best actor for his role in King Richard. Will Smith tearfully apologized in his Oscars acceptance speech, "I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams, but love will make you do crazy things.”

Troy Kotsur becomes the second deaf actor to win an Oscar

Troy Kotsur won best supporting actor for his role in Coda. He's only the second ever deaf actor to win this, following his co-star Marlee Matlin's win back in 1987.

During his acceptance speech, he said, “I really want to thank all of the wonderful deaf theatre stages where I was allowed and given the opportunity to develop my craft as an actor."

He added, in his emotional speech, "This is dedicated to the deaf community, the Coda community, and the disabled community. This is our moment.”

Lady Gaga and Liza Minelli took to the stage together

Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli's emotional Oscars hosting left fans in tears, as the adorable connection between the pair, shone through—as did their style.

Gaga wore a sparkly fitted tuxedo with stunning necklaces and black heels, when she co-presented the best picture award with icon Liza. The Cabaret star looked incredibly chic in all black with accent hot pink sleeves. 

Fans were touched by the kindness and love between the pair. Lady Gaga began, "I’m honored to present the final award of the evening with the true show business legend. She’s celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cabaret. Oscar-winning actress, Liza Minnelli."

When Liza read her lines from the teleprompter, her supportive cohost adorably lent over to the performer and said, 'I got you', to which Liza responded, ‘I know.’

Oscars 2022 sends message of support to Ukraine

Although the ceremony is all about movies, it's also often an opportunity for stars to platform important causes. Undeniably, as people wonder how to help the people of Ukraine, the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis was referenced.

'Proud' Ukrainian Mila Kunis, who has already made a huge donation to her native country, took to the stage to address the audience and those watching at home.

She began, "Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted. Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it's impossible to not be moved by their resilience." 

The actor added, "One cannot help but be in awe of those who find strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness."

Although some felt that the Oscars should offer a chance for the Ukrainian president to speak, individuals including one of the night's hosts Wanda Sykes who said, "Hollywood should stay in its lane." She added, “I think he’s very busy right now… Hollywood, we can get a little full of ourselves.”

The Academy added a minute of silence and a call to action for people across the globe to help in any way they possibly can.

Their statement read, "While film is an important avenue to express our humanity in times of conflict, the reality is millions of families in Ukraine need food, medical care, clean water and emergency services. Resources are scarce and we collectively as a global community can do more."

Beyoncé's opening performance

The incredible artist Beyoncé received her first Oscar nomination for best original song with Be Alive, from the film King Richard. The film, which tells the story of Venus and Serena Williams' father Richard Williams, is set in Compton where the family grew up.

The singer performed live, not on stage at the awards ceremony, but via video link from Compton.

Ariana DeBose becomes first queer woman of color to win an Oscar

Actor Ariana DeBose won best supporting actress for her role in the West Side Story remake, directed by Stephen Spielberg. Ariana played Anita, the girlfriend of Sharks gang leader Bernardo, and follows the original Anita, Rita Moreno, who also won an Oscar for the role in 1962.

Ariana is the second-ever Latina woman to win an Oscar and also the first-ever queer woman of color to win an Oscar.

As well as thanking Rita for paving the way for her, Ariana also celebrated visibility when she said, “You see an openly queer woman of color, an Afro-Latina, who found her strength in life through art. And that is, I think, what we’re here to celebrate.”

Addressing anyone who, “has ever questioned your identity”, and, “lived in the grey spaces”, she said, referencing the famous West Side Story song, “there is, indeed, a place for us."

The hosts best jokes

When it was revealed three funny women, Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer, and Regina Hall would be hosting, fans knew they were in for a hilarious evening. 

Amy addressed gender equality when she said, “This year the Academy hired three women to host because it’s cheaper to hire than one man.” She also hilariously quipped, “I’m Amy Schumer, or as they know me in Hollywood, ‘Melissa McCarthy said no.'”

Lady Gaga was snubbed at Oscars 2022, for her role in House of Gucci. Taking aim at the role, Wanda said, “There were a lot of snubs this year. Rachel Zegler for West Side Story, Jennifer Hudson for Respect, and Lady Gaga and Jared Leto for House of Random Accents.”

Regina, addressing Judi Dench, sent the crowd wild when she said, “We have an inspirational quote for you. This is from Kim Kardashian. ‘Work harder.’ That’s what we need you to do.”

The Hollywood legend accepted the prestigious accolade for his performance in King Richard at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday, marking his first-ever Oscar win after two previous nominations. 

The celebratory moment, however, was largely overshadowed by an on-air incident that occurred between Will and the awards show's host, Chris Rock, earlier in the evening. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star physically attacked the comedian after he made a joke about his wife, actor Jada Pinkett Smith, and her struggle with alopecia —much to the shock of both viewers and attendees. 

The jaw-dropping moment—which reportedly won't result in any charges—will likely go down in history as one of the most controversial Oscars moments ever.

Chris attempted to relieve the tension by joking, "That was the greatest night in the history of television," before moving on to present the award for the best documentary feature. 

Will apologized for his behavior during his acceptance speech for his Oscar for Best Actor, tearfully addressing the Academy and the other actors nominated in the category. 

"I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees," he said. "This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people. Tim and Trevor and Zack and Saniyya and Demi and Aunjanue and the entire cast and crew of ‘King Richard,’ Venus and Serena, the entire Williams family."

He also likened himself to his on-screen character, Richard Williams, explaining that the two men share similar family values. The tennis coach is best known as the father of Serena and Venus Williams and has been credited by both athletes as a major influence on their successful careers on the court. 

"Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams,” he said. 

"Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family. I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people. I know to do what we do, you got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile and you got to pretend like that’s okay.”

In response to the controversy, Angelina instantly bit back when she told Entertainment Weekly, "My parents really loved that moment, and that’s what will always matter.” 

Despite the absolute love being shown, the siblings haven't been seen in public over the last few years and multiple sources, including the Daily Mail, claim they've drifted apart.

2. Marlon Brando rejecting his Oscar

In 1973, Hollywood legend Marlon Brando was honored for his role in The Godfather, as the infamous mob boss Vito Corleone. 

The actor chose to decline not only his invite, but the award itself and instead offered the podium to a very important cause, that of the maltreatment of Native American people.

Native American civil rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather took to the stage and read a letter, written by Marlon, which explained her rejection was owing to, “the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry.”

3. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's duet

Love is love guys, real or acted, but does love mean...singing a duet with your face stuck to your co-star throughout? According to this meme-worthy performance, yes.

The pair's unforgettable rendition of the song Shallow, which took home best original song, gained infamy for being a little OTT. 

4. When a streaker took to the stage

Nothing makes people giggle quite as much as the simple hilarity of a streaker and in 1974 when artist and gay rights activist Robert Opel did just that—it really brought the house down.

David Niven was introducing the legendary Elizabeth Taylor when it all went down, much to Elizabeth's amusement and the audience's too. Quick as can be, host David hilariously joked, “Isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

5. Marisa Tomei's Oscar win with My Cousin Vinny

Few Oscar wins have been quite as debated as Marisa's best supporting actress win for her role in the underdog My Cousin Vinny, which turned 30 in 2022. As a matter of fact, some still firmly believe the win was a mistake.

Vanity Fair reports that an urban myth, based on the idea that the wrong name was read out, persists today. They explain these rumors were, "the result of elderly presenter Jack Palance supposedly reading the name off the teleprompter instead of the envelope in his hand."

Marisa beat legendary actresses including Vanessa Redgrave and Miranda Richardson, and despite the rumors—My Cousin Vinny remains a hugely popular film.

6. Edy Williams 1986 outfit

Of the most head-turning Oscar looks, one that often gets overlooked is that of actress Edy Williams back in 1986. Well, in all honesty, this was only one of the controversial looks chosen by the star, who's perhaps remembered more for her outrageous outfits than her acting roles.

Edy, born in 1941, once famously said, "I just look in the mirror and I say, 'God, it's really fantastic, the Lord really gave me something.' So why on earth should I cover any of it up?" Throughout the years she stayed true to this statement, wearing everything from a leopard bikini, to a little bo peep inspired look, to this iconic pearl necklace getup. 

7. Adrien Brody's unsolicited kiss

Halle Berry presented the Best Actor award at the 2003 Oscars, which went to Adrian Brody for his role in The Pianist. Things took a very strange twist when he chose to dramatically kiss Halle on stage.

The toe-curlingly uncomfortable and inappropriate moment garnered a lot of awkward laughs and a very shocked-looking Halle. No wonder, as she explained after the fact that she didn't consent to the moment.

During a 2017 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, she told host Andy Cohen that the kiss came completely out of left field and wasn't something she had any say in. Vulture reported that she explained, 'I was too focused on ‘What the f*** is going on right now?'"

Despite the wildly inappropriate incident, Halle remained in good humor about the whole thing.

The much-anticipated 94th Academy Awards are finally happening this weekend and plenty of nominated films are already streaming on various platforms. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to present at the Oscars 2022 next Sunday, but it looks like the road to secure their attendance hasn't exactly been smooth-sailing. 

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have apparently accepted the honor of presenting the Academy Award for the Best Picture at the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles on March 27, marking their first-ever joint appearance at the iconic Hollywood event. 

The exciting news comes shortly after it was revealed that the couple would be skipping Prince Philip's memorial service in London on Tuesday, March 29. 

However, details of Harry and Meghan's responsibilities at the glitzy affair were reportedly amended to avoid the risk of an awkward moment between them and one particular A-list actor. 

It's understood that the royal couple was initially asked to present the Academy Award for Best Actress—a role that would make perfect sense considering the Duchess' impressive career in TV and film career. The appointment was changed, however, after event organizers realized that Kristin Stewart was nominated in the prestigious category for her performance in Spencer—the 2021 historical film about Princess Diana. 

It's unknown whether or not Meghan and Harry have seen the flick, but sources have said that the Duke was none too happy about its release.  

“He’s pretty appalled by the film," a royal insider told OK! US. 

Harry hasn't ruled out all Royal Family-inspired content, however. The Duke has previously admitted to seeing 'some' of the Netflix series, The Crown, which is based on the Queen's reign throughout the decades. 

"I am way more comfortable with The Crown than I am seeing stories written about my family or my wife," he said during an interview with James Corden last year. "That is obviously fiction, take it how you will. But this is being reported on as fact because you’re supposedly news. I have a real issue with that."

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released its list of nominees for this year’s Oscars—set to take place on March 27—and, although expected to earn a nod for her role on House of Gucci, Lady Gaga was ultimately snubbed. Fans aren’t happy.

Overall, the movie is nominated in the Best Makeup & Hairstyling category, and Lady Gaga took to Instagram to congratulate her co-workers on the nod. 

"I could not be happier for a man I call my brother, who I've worked with for the last 15 years, @fredericaspiras, for his nomination in Makeup & Hairstyling for House of Gucci. Frederic was magical, precise, and dedicated months leading up to shoot and during filming," she wrote on the social media platform alongside a photo of the two of them together. 

"He prepared dozens of wigs for months and months, and did at least a year of preparation. He's a living genius and Freddie, we are all so grateful to just even be near your talent, creativity and generosity of spirit." 

"You continue to show your artistic DNA, your plan, your vision, and your deep connection to your family that drives you to excellence at all times. I love you, I'm rooting for you."

She went on to elegantly praise this year's other nominees as well. "Congratulations on all your hard work, dedication, your nomination and YOUR magic — you all deserve major recognition for what was a truly beautiful landscape of performances and accomplishments this past year," she wrote. 

"Your dedication during Covid, your huge hearts, and your ability to tell amazing stories is a gift to the whole world during what is for many a very hard time. Congratulations my friends. Bravo!"

This isn't Lady Gaga's first rodeo at the Oscars. The multitalented artist was nominated for her role in A Star is Born in 2019, where she played opposite Bradley Cooper. The chemistry between the two was so palpable that Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga were surrounded by romance rumors for years after their performance together.

The star was also nominated in the Best Original Song category for her work on Til It Happens To You from the documentary The Hunting Ground in 2016. She won in the latter category three years ago, earning praise for her song Shallow, part of the soundtrack to A Star is Born.

Fans took to social media to comment on the recent snubbing. "Lady Gaga is officially an Oscar snub," one fan tweeted. 

"The Oscars should now be aware [that] this whole narrative that's been taking shape [over] Lady Gaga's snub this year will ultimately set the stage for her eventual Best Actress win," said another fan. 

"It's inevitable. She's coming for more. Talent always wins in the end and we all know SHE CAN." We, of course, wholeheartedly agree!

The Golden Globes' decision to keep its 2022 event a closed-door affair has stunned the entertainment world, shedding questions over the future of this year's upcoming award ceremonies. 

The American film and TV prize-giving event was held at the Beverly Hills Hilton on Sunday night in an unprecedented fashion, with NBC refusing to air the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual show for the first time in years. 

The network boycotted the HFPA in 2022 after it was widely criticized for having not one black member in its group of 87 international journalists. Many famous actors, including Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo, have also condemned the organization for its blatant lack of diversity. 

With such a drop in support from Tinseltown's heavyweights, last night's Golden Globes was notably void of its usual A-list celebrities, red-carpet ensembles, and excited crowds—resulting in an evening that one reporter likened to an 'intimate tax attorneys’ convention.'

The anticlimactic event has now raised questions over the status of other showbiz awards shows in 2022, many of which have faced numerous obstacles both this year and last year due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

BAFTAs 2022 

This year's British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs) Film Awards are set to go ahead in London on March 13, 2022. 

The glitzy event, which has taken place at the Royal Albert Hall since 2017, has long been regarded as Britain's most prestigious movie awards ceremony and is often hailed as the UK's answer to the Oscars. Last year, it was held in April after being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some of its presenters—including Edith Bowman and Dermot O'Leary—delivered their segments from the venue itself, most participated via video calling. Its nominees, many of whom were overseas, also attended virtually. 

Luckily, the second half of the BAFTAs was a bit more normal than its film predecessor. Its TV awards, which were held at the Television Centre in West London, were attended by a number of small-screen stars in person and even featured a red carpet for those all-important VIP looks. The Academy chose to host the ceremony at the TV studio to allow for a socially-distanced audience and celebrity line-up, in the hope of creating a more authentic show. 

Emmys 2022 

This year's Primetime Emmys are also scheduled to go ahead, with September 2022 already confirmed as the date by its organizers. 

It has yet to be revealed what exact day the iconic American TV awards will fall on, but if 2021's ceremony is anything to go by, it's like to occur in the last couple weeks of the month. 

It's also likely that the Emmys 2022 will embrace a pre-pandemic vibe—meaning virtual acceptance speeches will probably be kept at a minimum. Last year's event organizers made a conscious effort to keep things traditional but still safe, holding the show in an outdoor tent and requiring all attendees to be vaccinated. 

Grammys 2022 

This year's Grammys has sadly been postponed, due to concerns over rising cases of COVID-19. The legendary music awards, which were originally scheduled to take place in Los Angeles on January 31, has now been pushed back to an undisclosed date. 

The Grammys' organizers also decided to delay last year's event, moving the star-studded ceremony from January to March. Like the Emmys, it also scaled down the production, with most of its segments taking place outside. 

Nicole Kidman may be at the top of her game now, but it wasn't so long ago that the Australian actress considered quitting the industry altogether. 

The Nine Perfect Strangers cast member has built an impressive repertoire ever since her breakthrough role in the 1990 film, Days of Thunder, churning out several movies and films on a nearly annual basis for almost three decades. Now an esteemed Oscar-winner, Nicole has rightly earned her status as a bonafide tenant of Hollywood's elite upper-tier. 

However, it wasn't too long ago that she was struggling to stay relevant in the youth-obsessed entertainment industry. Nicole has recently opened up about how Tinsel Town's deep-rooted ageism jeopardized her entire career, leaving her disillusioned and questioning her future as an actress altogether.

After enjoying a streak of blockbuster roles and prestigious awards throughout the '90s and '00s, the Big Little Things star was struck by a career drought following her 40th birthday. Despite her lofty resumé, she entered her fourth decade with fewer job offers and a notable drop in attention from Hollywood executives. The slump was so disheartening that Nicole, who welcomed her first biological child with her husband Keith Urban at the age of 41, contemplated giving up acting for good and focusing instead on family life. 

"I was frustrated—as so many women are in different careers—at the idea of being told, ‘Well, that’s it. You’ve passed through that period where it’s all going to be fine and now you’re in your 40s we’re not interested as much in your storytelling or your ideas or in who you are as a woman or a person,’” she told the Mail on Sunday's You magazine. 

This loss of interest occurred around the same time that Nicole gave birth to her daughter, Sunday Rose, in 2008, leading the Cold Mountain star to correlate the start of motherhood with the collapse of her career. 

“Giving birth was like the end of the chapter for me. I thought, ‘Oh well, this is where I go now,’” she explained.

Luckily, with the support of her family, Nicole managed to reignite her spark and persevere through this difficult time. She especially credits her mother, Janelle, for lifting her out of her funk and offering some much-needed words of wisdom. 

"She would say, ‘Nicole, you’re an artist and you shouldn’t just leave that behind. You should keep something back because at some point you may want to go back there again,’” she recalled. 

Janelle's advice may sound simple—but it certainly seems to have worked. Nicole's career has continued to flourish into the 2010s and looks it looks like her momentum isn't about to die down any time soon.
