It’s easy to fall head over heels for the new-in summer dresses and raffia accessories, but never forget basics are an essential part of any wardrobe. Without them, you wouldn’t have the staple building blocks to build outfits around, and a plain T-shirt is a must-have for me.

They work with smart tailoring and casual denim, though Emilia Fox just wore a simple black Tee with a rather stunning skirt. She attended Henley Festival as a guest of Audi, and put her classic top to good use as it balanced out her voluminous ME+EM maxi skirt.

Crafted from tulle with embroidered pink flowers running all over, this cream skirt is a showstopper, and it’s now only available in one size online. The waistband is black which blended seamlessly into her T-shirt, like they were made for each other.

If the Silent Witness star had opted for a white T-shirt instead, the band would have been more obvious and waist-defining. However, there would also have been quite a stark contrast between the lighter top, the rest of the skirt, and this waistband.

Her black T-shirt worked much better in my opinion to soften the final look. It had a crew-neckline and short sleeves, with a fitted silhouette that lent itself to being tucked in. Leaving a T-shirt loose and draped over a waistband is an easy way to make an ensemble more low-key, though Emilia went more polished for Henley.

The T-shirt and voluminous skirt combination came together to create a smart-casual outfit and this is why a top like this is so useful. Emilia Fox’s skirt naturally felt quite elevated thanks to its length, tulle fabric and intricate embroidery and the top balanced this.

Long skirt outfits can be tricky to put together but this is a good formula to follow in summer and you can mix up your T-shirts and choose a pattern if your skirt is plain. Another way to wear maxi skirts is with a blazer and Emilia also did this at Henley.

I suspect she was wearing the Sharp Shoulder Tux Blazer, also by ME+EM. As the weather has been so warm, she didn’t need to wear it all the time and held it draped over her shoulder for some photographs.The lapels were satin and it was single-breasted and longline.

If you want to wear a blazer with a high-waisted skirt or trousers I would suggest going for a jacket that’s either long like hers, or intentionally cropped. This way it will either hit below the waistband or line up with it.

Something in the middle can sometimes cut off your silhouette and feel quite traditional instead of contemporary. Emilia Fox’s blazer brought structure to her look and she accessorised with a dainty chain necklace and sparkly hoop earrings.

It showed how to wear a basic T-shirt in a more elevated way and in June she also styled another blazer and maxi skirt together. The actor appeared on Good Morning Britain and this time she went for a shirt with a striped ME+EM skirt and orange Holland Cooper blazer.

I think a white T-shirt would have been great with these pieces and when the weather is really hot, you can swap Tees for neutral vest tops.

As well as feeling good to wear, this bra looked great too. Duchess Sophie’s terracotta pink jumper-T-shirt-hybrid is a staple for mild days and as a base for layering.

When the seasons change we look forward to wearing our best wool jumpers and boots, but sometimes the weather is milder and leaves us wanting to wear something slightly more lightweight. It can be hard to find something to take the place of your go-to T-shirts as an outfit base, but Duchess Sophie’s cosy jumper and T-shirt hybrid is perfect for sunny autumn days. The Duchess of Edinburgh wore this gorgeous top in photos shared by CBeebies and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness to announce that she's reading a CBeebies Bedtime Story to mark World Sight Day on 10th October.

The knitted material and ribbed detailing were very jumper-esque and gave this piece an autumnal feel, whilst the shorter sleeves and lightweight nature of the fabric meant it wasn’t too thick. This top looks like it could be the same one she wore for a visit to the Hale Youth & Community Centre last month and it's such a versatile clothing item for layering over.

A knitted T-shirt like this works so well as an autumn capsule wardrobe staple as it can be styled exactly as you would style a cotton T-shirt. Simply wear it with your favourite denim pieces or with a satin skirt, and add a pair of boots and a jacket to finish off your look. Especially if you’re drawn to wear a thicker jacket, a top like this is a great outfit base to have underneath that won’t have you feeling too warm overall.

Duchess Sophie’s colour of choice for her knitted T-shirt won’t surprise anyone who’s been inspired by her style for a while, as the senior royal is a huge fan of wearing pink.

It’s one of her most-worn colours all year round, though her top for the CBeebies Bedtime Story put a seasonal twist on her favourite hue. This shade of pink was earthy with a slight orange undertone to it that reminded us of terracotta. Whilst some cool-toned pinks can be harder to pair with other colours, this pink would be especially stunning with warm neutrals like brown, cream and beige.

We sadly didn’t get much of a glimpse of the rest of the Duchess of Edinburgh’s outfit in the pictures shared by CBeebies, but it looked like she was wearing a pair of black trousers with her knitted T-shirt.

Black trousers are a timeless failsafe when you don’t know what to wear with a certain top and going so simple with her trousers meant that Duchess Sophie’s cosy jumper T-shirt hybrid remained the focus of her outfit. Always one to go for coordination the Duchess then tied in the pink and black tones of her trousers and top with her jewellery and makeup.

She re-wore a pair of her favourite earrings which have a single grey pearl suspended in a delicate silver spiral design. Her nails were painted a soft, warm pink to match her knitted top and even her lipstick was a very similar shade. We can easily forget how much of a difference the small details make and here Duchess Sophie gave her entire outfit a sense of cohesion.

It seems likely that the Duchess of Edinburgh, who is Patron of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, wore this same jumper to record her reading her CBeebies Bedtime Story which is Specs for Rex by Yasmeen Ismail. I wear a size 32FF, so I am always on the look-out for the best bras for big busts and I usually wear a full-cup bra to give me the level of support I need. However these bras are often lacy with added details to make them look attractive and consequently they don't provide a smooth line under my clothes. When I began my hunt for a good T-Shirt bra the first criteria had to be the overall look of the bra, I needed a design that was completely smooth both at the front and back so that it would disappear under my new clingy cream top. I also wanted the bra to be as seam free as possible, so that it was comfortable. John Lewis had a great selection of lingerie brands to choose from but I decided to try Sofia, one of their own brand designs, as it looked like the perfect bra on the hanger. I have been wearing it for 3 days and have considered the design, fit and comfort. I also tested it under a variety of tops. Overall I have been impressed with this bra, but there are certain elements that made it less comfortable than my usual full-cup bra of choice.

This bra is light and made from incredibly soft fabric that has an almost peachy brushed finish. There are 2 seams on either side joining the front to the back of the bra, but they lay completely flat and are bonded which makes them almost invisible, and not detected under clothes. All of the edges are bonded rather than stitched which contributes to the smooth finish. The straps were adjustable and also very smooth. The under wiring is flexible and moves with your body. There are no fabric labels inside the bra, the washing instructions are printed directly onto the underside of the clasp. My only discomfort with this bra came from the padding, which made me feel overly warm on a hot sunny day, but in general it proved to be very comfortable.

This is not the type of bra that you would choose for its good looks! It's a practical bra that has no added fancy embellishments, just a clean and simple design that serves a purpose. T-shirt bras work by containing and compressing your boobs into preformed moulded cups which give you a soft and natural shape. When I was wearing this bra my boobs felt slightly squashed into place, rather than the uplifting effect that you get with a full-cup bra and although the bra was lightly padded I felt it made my boobs look smaller in the same way that the best minimiser bras would do.

This bra provided me with an adequate level of support throughout the day and I felt comfortable when walking, stretching and lifting my arms above my head. However when I had to jog for the bus I felt less supported than when wearing a full-cup design.

This bra is hand wash only and I would suggest using a gentle liquid detergent to prolong the life of the bra. After hand washing once I didn't see any changes to the shape or size of the bra, but I will continue to wash and wear and report back here if this changes. Due to the bonded seams and edges of the bra it feels more delicate than the average design. T-shirt bras need to be stored unfolded. Avoid inverting one cup and folding it into the other cup as this will cause the fabric to wrinkle and distort the shape over time.

The fashion designer and former Spice Girl went for a simple summer combination of a relaxed navy t-shirt and white jeans for a family celebration this month. Taking to Instagram, Victoria shared a series of pictures of her dad Anthony Adams’ birthday gathering featuring her, her mum Jackie and two of her children, Romeo and Harper, as well as her siblings.

It’s still very understated and easy to wear but has a touch more warmth to it and gives a subtle pop of colour. This worked incredibly well with Victoria’s white high-waisted jeans which look to have a straight leg cut that was flattering but not super streamlined. White jeans outfits can be tricky but they’re perfect for the summer months and these jeans contrasted with the darker T-shirt in such a lovely way that immediately draws the eye.

To accentuate her waist even more the fashion designer added one of her iconic Victoria Beckham belts. She’s known for incorporating these into her looks and this one was the £190 Frame Belt in burgundy leather. The deep burgundy shade had a brown undertone to it which softened the boldness of the colour and the gold-toned hardware was so gorgeous.

Sadly, Victoria’s shoes of choice weren’t on show in her family birthday pictures, but a pair of the best white trainers would look undeniably stunning with this outfit, as would wedges or court shoe heels. On cooler summer days you could also easily add a denim jacket over the top to uphold the casual summer feel of the look or else wear a tailored blazer to dress it up slightly.

Shoulder pads have always been a polarising fashion choice – with people either actively avoiding or loving them. I have always been the former, however after an in-depth chat with fashion expert, Trinny Woodall, who swears by them as a staple spring capsule wardrobe piece, I've been convinced otherwise. 

"When we age, we lose definition, we lose bone density and might get more narrow," Trinny explains. "Clothes begin to hang differently on us – to the point where you put on that dress you love so much and all of a sudden it starts to feel frumpy. But if you put a shoulder pad underneath, it will bring back the sharpness to that dress.

"I wear these padded Zara t-shirts under everything: a wide leg trousers, this t-shirt and a sleeveless tank on top - I love it. It transforms so much of my wardrobe, suddenly they give my clothes structure. Jackets I love, that have no proper shoulder pads, suddenly become jackets that are present. There's nothing a shoulder pad doesn't help."
