I’m very much on board with neutral swimsuits as you can get so much wear out of them with different coverups and beach-wear. But Anita Rani has just made a strong case for us all having a black halterneck swimming costume in our collection.

Ladies - I think I've found it!

Pour Moi Santa Monica Swimsuit Review

Pour Moi is one of the best swimsuit brands, and they celebrate women of all shapes and sizes. I'm a big fan of their bras; they offer flattering designs, especially if you're looking for the best bras for large busts.

I'm size 32FF, and I often wear this Multiway Strapless Bra - it's one of the best strapless bras I've discovered. If you wear a size DD+, buying your swimwear from a respected lingerie brand is a sensible idea since they use all the expertise and technology that goes into the bras to make their swimwear supportive too.

I wanted to try a bandeau style that would be good for sunbathing (I hate getting strap marks), but had straps that I could attach when swimming. The Santa Monica Strapless Tummy Control Swimsuit ticked both boxes. I ordered online and tried it on at home to test the comfort factor, and took a trip to my local pool to check how it performed when swimming. Can I brave the waves? Here's what I thought...

Shape & Design

This is a bandeau-style swimsuit which dips slightly at the centre front to create a more flattering line. The front of the swimsuit is ruched across the tummy area, with a twist in the fabric at the bust. The back of the swimsuit is unlined, with ample bottom coverage and medium cut legs. The straps attach at the top of the inner cups. Two strips of soft and flexible boning are hidden within the side seams at the bust, to ensure the swimsuit stays in place.

Support & Fit

The Santa Monica swimsuit is available in sizes 10-20, with selected colours also available in tall and petite fittings. I choose my regular size 12 and I would say it fits true to size, although being a FF cup the inner moulded cups were a snug fit across my boobs.

If you wear a G+ cup I suggest sizing up for a roomier fit. I am 5'6" and the length was perfect on me, no tugging down the legs! I wasn't expecting this swimsuit to feel as supportive as it does. The firm mesh lining really did work to hold my tummy in, and the boning at the sides of the bust stopped the swimsuit from rolling down, even when I waved my arms above my head. I wouldn't suggest a game of beach volleyball, but with the straps in place, you will be fine playing a quick round of swingball!

Comfort

I found this swimsuit very comfortable to wear: the fabric is 80% polyamide and 20% elastane, so it's really stretchy. I adjusted the length of the straps so that they provided extra support without digging in. Initially, I was a bit worried that the boning would feel uncomfortable under my arms, but it's flexible and secured within the lining, so I didn't feel it at all.

Care

After swimming I hand washed the swimsuit and hung it up to drip dry. It washed well and dried in a couple of hours. I will continue to wear and wash and will report back over time if I see any changes in quality or fit.

Verdict

I felt slimmer and more streamlined in this swimsuit due to the firm mesh lining that did a great job in holding in my tummy. It was easy to detach the straps to create a bandeau style that was perfect for sunbathing. With the straps attached it provided a medium level of support. For under £50 it's great value for money.

When I finally got my hands on a Hunza G swimsuit a few years ago, I smugly thought I'd never need to stress about buying swimwear ever again. Which makes splashing the cash feel like it's worth every penny! Girl maths, right?

Don't get me wrong, I love it. It's ridiculously comfortable, super stretchy, has washed well and is cut in such a flattering way. What more could I want? It's still a firm favourite in my suitcase for every trip.

However, I'm going to let you into a little secret: H&M's textured swimsuits are just as good, making them some of the best Hunza G lookalikes you can buy for summer.

This high leg style in a beautiful powder blue hue accidentally made its way to the checkout with me a year ago because I loved the colour so much, and now I am completely sold on the scrunchy texture.

For just £24.99 (versus the average Hunza G price of around £175), these boast padded cups - which are removable, but I personally love them. Plus, the cut is classic and they're available in an impressive choice of colours.

From what I can tell, high street hero H&M bring them back year after year, and they fly off the shelves, so don't wait until it's time to jet off on your holiday before you invest...

In my experience of H&M swimwear, the swimsuits run true to size, and the 'high-leg' cut of my version was nowhere near as high as I had worried it might be.

They're fully lined, and the fabric contains 8% elastane, giving them that nice bit of stretch. There are also similar textured bikini tops available if you prefer a two-piece.

Matching your accessories to your outfit creates a sense of cohesion and elegance in a matter of moments. I’m a big fan of doing this with my occasionwear looks and smart-casual outfits, but Jasmine Harman has inspired me to give it a go on holiday too.

The A Place in the Sun host recently shared a picture of herself sitting on a boat wearing a fiery red swimsuit and matching lipstick and holding a strawberry-decorated drink.

We’ve seen this picture before and this makes sense as Jasmine was posting about a new episode of A Place in the Sun: What Happened Next airing on Channel 4. Whilst she might be excited to re-visit a former house-buyer, we’re just as thrilled to see this combination again.

The swimsuit itself was beautiful and bold. It had a V-neckline and looked to be halterneck, with a tie-waist belt secured in a pretty bow at the front.

Even if you’re not someone who wears a lot of vibrant colours day-to-day, it’s always fun to have a few bright pieces in your swimwear collection. In the summer months and when you’re on holiday it just feels quite joyful and red is a striking tone that looks sensational with neutrals.

Jasmine could’ve easily paired her red swimming costume with a black or white coverup and sandals to create more of an "outfit" to take her from the poolside to a café or restaurant. On A Place in the Sun she didn’t need this but she did elevate her swimwear to new heights with her red lipstick.

Once commonly worn, nowadays many people are daunted by the idea of wearing red lipstick. I personally love it and have three in my collection, with one - MAC Russian Red - looking like a similar cool-toned red to Jasmine’s.

Hers perfectly coordinated with her one-piece and brought a glamorous edge. Fiona McKim, Digital Beauty Editor of woman&home thinks that matching your makeup to your outfits is something that’s "long overdue" as a trend.

These accessories were lovely additions but the matching lipstick was what really took her swimsuit to the next level. We can’t help hoping that we’ll see Jasmine Harman bring them both back at some point this summer.

This is a swimwear detail that’s very flattering if you want to accentuate your waist and the A Place in the Sun star wrapped hers twice around and secured it in a loose knot.

Given the way she tied it, it’s possible that the belt on Jasmine’s swimsuit was a multi-way feature that could also have been tied at the back or possibly brought upwards to create some kind of straps. Either way, it was a fabulous addition and matched the black leopard spots that ran all the way across her swimsuit.

Unlike many leopard print pieces which often incorporate various shades and gradients with the spots, this had dynamic black leopard spots on and a rich brown base colour. This made the pattern even more versatile as having just two similar colours, meant that it wasn’t overwhelmingly bold.

Even so, the leopard print was striking and Jasmine went all-out with the glamour and added a floppy straw hat to finish off her look. Hats are a practical summer essential and Jasmine’s woven one blended functionality and style so well. It evoked a sense of being on the French Riviera and had a wide angled brim that framed her face and golden hair. Raffia in general is so on-trend in the summer months and this hat was a soft camel colour that contrasted with the dark leopard print swimsuit.

If she’d wanted to take this look from the beach or poolside to a town or café, the addition of a pair of tan, brown or black sandals and a cover-up in similar shades would have tied in with the swimsuit and created a very put-together feel. For filming Jasmine didn’t need to layer her look at all and we can all take a bit of summer inspiration from her love of leopard print - which she also wears in the form of dresses too.

We also hope that we’ll get to see her wear this outfit again as Jasmine often shares glimpses of her favourite swimsuits getting re-worn and this leopard print one is a stunning choice.

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill’s favourite striped swimsuit had us searching high and low for chic alternatives and we’ve found some beautiful pieces.

When you find swimwear for your body shape and style preferences it often becomes a treasured piece in your holiday wardrobe and it seems we’re not the only ones who get a lot of wear out of our favourite swimsuit. Taking to Instagram earlier this summer Olympic Gold Medal-winning Heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill posted a sweet snap of herself on holiday. Just as we’d expect from her given the glorious sunshine, she was wearing a swimsuit and we recognised this particular green and white striped swimwear from another holiday back in August last year. It seems Jessica Ennis-Hill has a favourite swimsuit and we’re not surprised that it’s this green and white stripy one.

Back in August 2023, Jessica was in Portugal and shared pictures of her trip, starting with one of her readying herself to catch an inflatable beach ball. Her swimsuit was the Radiance Plunge Swimsuit by Maryan Mehlhorn that is now almost sold out on Simply Beach and it has a plunging neckline and a small waist belt.

Retro glamour is one of the key swimwear trends for 2024 and Jessica was clearly ahead of the game when she wore her striped swimsuit on holiday last year. It definitely has vintage charm and the brand even describes the green and white print as "retro". Although not technically stripes, the geometric green shapes run in bands across the swimsuit, creating the appearance of green stripes.

It’s a fun take on classic stripes and we are particularly entranced by the boldness of the emerald green and white combination. If you love a striped swimsuit but want something different to the often-seen blue and white and black and white stripes, then you might want to consider investing in green and white swimwear which is every bit as striking but brighter.

A swimsuit like this also looks sensational with beachwear over the top if you want to make the trip from the poolside to a restaurant or café. Jessica Ennis-Hill opted to layer an oversized linen shirt over the top of her re-worn swimming costume at a beachside restaurant in June 2024. Worn open at the front, you could still see the design of her swimsuit, but her arms and shoulders were covered from the sun.

Choosing a white shirt also coordinated with the base colour of the swimsuit and this helped to give Jessica’s look more cohesion and a relaxed yet put-together feel. Just like when she wore it in Portugal, the retired athlete chose to accessorise her swimsuit look with a pair of dark sunglasses to shield her eyes from the sun and wore her hair in a bun. This kept it away from her face in the heat and also looked incredibly chic with her swimwear.

How to shrink a swimsuit: The boiling method

She suggests that one of the best ways to shrink your swimsuit is the boiling water method: "Fill a pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil," Hyacinth advises, then "carefully place your swimsuit into the boiling water and let it simmer for about 10 minutes." Here, I made sure to use tongs to keep a safe distance when lowering my suit in. Make sure you always use tongs to remove the swimsuit from the pot to avoid any injuries, too (you might want to wear a pair of oven gloves, and stand back to avoid hot water drips). This process helped to tighten the fabric, reducing its size.

Once removed, rinse it off under cold water immediately to stop the shrinking process. This method is ideal for swimsuits made from natural fibres or blends that can handle the heat. However, be mindful of the specific material of your suit, as some fabrics don't respond well to high temperatures. My two-piece handled the heat well, and was made from an elastane blend, making it once again, one of the best tummy control swimsuits.

How to shrink a swimsuit: before & after

Once I had completed the boiling method, I noticed a significant change in the fit and handle of my two-piece. The material had bounced back to almost the original feel. My swimsuit has hidden tummy support that I had felt had worn off from overwear, which was my main concern, however, I have noticed that the fit after following these steps was much improved and helped to sculpt my silhouette.

How to shrink a swimsuit: A gentler approach

If you’re hesitant about boiling your swimsuit, Hyacinth suggests a more gentle approach. "Wash the suit in cool water with mild detergent first," she recommends. "Then submerge it in boiling water for fifteen minutes." This method starts with a gentle cleanse to ensure your swimsuit is free from any oils or chlorine, which could impact the shrinking process.

After soaking in boiling water, rinse the suit with cold water; this step helps to set the new size. Gently squeeze out the excess water, but avoid wringing it out, as this can distort the fabric. Place the swimsuit in a dryer on a low setting, and keep an eye on it. "Check on the suit often to avoid over-shrinking," Hyacinth says. This careful monitoring will help you achieve the desired fit without making it too tight.

How to shrink a swimsuit: Specific problem areas

Sometimes, it's not the entire swimsuit that needs shrinking, but specific problem areas, like the bottom of your swimsuit, for instance. In this scenario, Hyacinth offers a solution that includes soaking those specific areas in hot water. "Shot water helps relax the fibres, allowing for shrinkage," she explains. Meaning that you can target saggy spots by dipping only those parts into the hot water to create your desired effect.

For saggy bikini bottoms, Hyacinth offers a DIY fix, which includes adding your own straps to regular bikini bottom styles to make them into a tie-up style. She suggests, "Try attaching matching straps to the sides of the bottoms with a needle and thread." By doing a simple alteration like this, you can tighten and adjust the fit to suit your needs. Or create knots in the straps for another quick and easy way to reclaim the tightness without going through the whole shrinking process.

And if you are wondering how to (or how often to) wash your swimsuit once you've shrunk it, she suggests washing your suit with water after each use to remove chlorine, salt, and oils (such as suncream) that can weaken the fibres. Make sure you hand wash with a mild detergent and avoid using harsh chemicals, which can damage the piece. Allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight to ensure it keeps its elasticity, or put it in the dryer on a low tumble.

Your swimsuit should be closely fitted against your skin, and any bunching or excess material usually indicates that it may be too big.
