Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh stepped out in Brussels wearing a powder blue power suit and reminded us that tailoring can be fun as well as sophisticated.

Suits can have a reputation for being overly corporate or business-like and because of this many of us might steer clear of wearing a full co-ord. However, tailoring definitely has a place outside the office and suits can make gorgeous date night outfits as well as occasionwear looks as an alternative to dresses. The Duchess of Edinburgh is an expert at styling tailored staples and on 26th March she stepped out in Brussels wearing a dazzling pastel co-ord. It’s easy to forget that tailoring doesn’t have to be neutral and her powder blue suit was a great reminder.

Duchess Sophie was in Belgium to attend an event hosted by the European Parliament Intergroup on Children’s Rights. She gave a powerful keynote speech, which was focused on ensuring the safety of children is at the top of the international agenda. For such an important event her outfit had to be professional and smart, but she also showed her signature style.

Like many of her fellow royals including the Princess of Wales, the Duchess loves going bold with her outfit colours. She has a particular fondness for pale pink which is one of the biggest spring/summer fashion trends for 2025, but pastels in general are always hugely popular at this time of year. Her suit was by Victoria Beckham and we’re not surprised to see her champion one of the best British clothing brands.

The suit consists of the Alina high waisted trousers which have voluminous wide legs and a fitted high waisted cut. The front and back patch pocket details are 1970s-inspired and the single-breasted jacket also has patch pockets. These details bring a sense of cohesion and the jacket is made from a recycled wool blend.

Worn as separates, these two tailored staples would also be stunning, but they make such a striking impact when worn together. If you’re unsure how to make suits or tailoring in general work for you, then going for a pastel colour is a lovely option.

The senior royals’ suit was the Victoria Beckham ‘Bluebell’ tone and this makes a change from the often-seen black, white or beige suits out there but isn’t so vibrant that it seems daunting to style. You can easily mellow pastel tailored items by wearing them with your neutral go-tos, like a white shirt and trainers, as paler tones aren’t too much of a contrast compared to acid brights or primary colours. When you want your tailoring to feel fun as well as sophisticated, a pastel colour is a lovely way to mix things up.

The Duchess wore her suit with a Gabriela Hearst floral silk shirt and added a pair of pointed toe heels as she chose to elevate her suit even more. This was appropriate for such a significant occasion, which saw her join with the UK Minister for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, Jess Phillips.

Duchess Sophie undertook this visit in her capacity as Patron of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Plan International UK. In her keynote speech, she spoke about the terrifying reality that children are "exposed to an enormous amount of dangerous, harmful and inappropriate content" with "consequences which can prove devastating".

"Therefore I implore you now, on behalf of the children of today and tomorrow, to redouble your efforts in prioritising their safety and well-being," the Duchess of Edinburgh declared.

Catherine, Princess of Wales has worn her baby pink McQueen suit several times now and I’ve found a Mango co-ord that reminds me so much of it.

There are certain outfits worn by the Princess of Wales which stick out in my mind and her pink Alexander McQueen suit is one of them. It ticks so many of the boxes for the royal’s signature style - it’s made by one of the best British clothing brands, it’s immaculately tailored and, of course, it’s a vibrant colour. This suit is something that seems very out-there but is actually easier to wear than you might think. So when I saw Mango’s linen three piece suit for sale this season I couldn’t help instantly thinking of Kate’s co-ord and imagining how I’d style this alternative.

We last saw the Princess of Wales wearing her McQueen suit in 2023 when she visited the Foundling Museum in London. On this occasion she wore it with a matching pink shirt which created the illusion of a waistcoat. In short, it’s everything I’d expect from a beautiful tailored blazer and when I want to wear bolder colours I prefer sticking to more timeless designs. This helps to balance out the vibrancy and the simplicity of both Kate’s McQueen blazer and this one. If you’re ever unsure how to wear pastel pink then I’d advise keeping the rest of your outfit quite neutral and minimal.

The soft pink colour of the Princess’ jacket is one of the biggest spring/summer fashion trends for 2025 and so she was once again ahead of the game with this look. I particularly love the contrast between the ultra-feminine shade and the structured design of her suit.

The straight trousers were high-waisted and had a crisp crease running down the front of each leg which accentuated the elevated feel of this outfit. The Mango trousers I’ve found also have a crease down the front and a straight-leg cut, but the linen material softens them and makes them a little more relaxed. This is perfect if you like wearing tailored staples with your best white trainers and T-shirts to make them into a smart-casual daily outfit.

When she visited the Foundling Museum, Kate wore a pink V-neck shirt that exactly matched her suit. This turned her ensemble into a full block colour look which made it even more striking and unforgettable. However, the first time she wore this co-ord back in 2022 for a roundtable event the Princess paired it with a classic white T-shirt instead.

Both looked fabulous and Mango’s matching suit also has a matching waistcoat. This features a rounded V-neckline, cream buttons down the front and two front pockets. You can of course wear waistcoats with jeans and contrasting trousers or skirts too, but there’s something about a full three-piece suit that exudes sophistication.

Another of the great things about co-ords in general is their versatility. You can mix and match the trousers and blazer with so many of your existing wardrobe staples to create different looks. The Princess of Wales completed her 2023 outfit with a pearl-embellished white belt and white court shoe heels and the year before she opted for pink suede heels.

We're seeing a real resurgence in oversized tailoring this season, with major fashion labels bringing back the double breasted blazer paired with baggy tailored trousers. There is so much to love about Julia's outfit, but the standout element is undoubtedly the brilliant powder blue shade of her suit. Both rich in colour and subtly muted at the same time, the tone feels so easy to wear while also packing a bright punch of spring-ready colour that brings a light, bright and breezy feel to the formal look.

We weren't surprised to hear that the suit is by Stella McCartney - the designer is known for her impeccably sharp tailoring and this two-piece is so crisp and flattering that it could hardly be by anyone else! The single-breasted blazer is a beautiful piece that brings a warm-weather feel to the traditional blazer thanks to its cropped front, with an asymmetrical hemline blending into a full-length jacket at the back. This keeps the design feeling oh-so luxe and heavy as it also introduces some fun, sculptural interest. Plus, it really lets the barrel leg silhouette of the suit trousers shine.

With crisp and dramatic lapels framing the simple white shirt Julia layered underneath her suit, she left the suit to do all the talking and kept her accessories to a minimum. A pair of patent court pumps with a pointed toe and leg-elongating stiletto heel created a sleek look against the cropped hem of her trousers and she brought in a rich pop of contrasting colour by carrying an oversized maroon clutch.

We also couldn't help but notice that she'd matched her manicure to the rich, deep red shade of her handbag and painted her nails in the cranberry nail shade predicted to be everywhere in 2025. It might not be your first choice of tone to pair with a powder blue but, wow! It's going to be our go-to from now on.

Princess Anne wore a white and gold skirt suit to a royal reception and it oozed elegance just like a Chanel two-piece.

Princess Anne has such a distinctive style and although she regularly champions the best British clothing brands, her outfit for a reception at Buckingham Palace on 20th February reminded us of classic French fashion. The King’s sister wore a white skirt suit to the event, which was held to celebrate exceptional individuals and organisations who are contributing towards humanitarian efforts across the globe. Princess Anne’s outfit was suitably timeless and formal for the occasion and the double breasted blazer and skirt together reminded us of Chanel co-ords.

The French fashion house is known for their boucle or tweed style jackets and skirts and although the fabric of Princess Anne’s skirt suit wasn’t the same fabric, it had a similar feel with its gold-toned buttons and very feminine, proper silhouette. The blazer was double-breasted and the longline length gave it a more retro edge.

It had a fit-and-flare silhouette which is always gorgeous if you want to accentuate your waist. It’s not as commonly seen with blazers and gave Princess Anne’s jacket a peplum-esque shape that draped over her matching white skirt. The structured shoulders and notched lapels were beautiful and the gleaming gold buttons added glamour.

Even without the skirt this would have been a stand-out wardrobe staple that could’ve been thrown over everything from tailored trousers to jeans (not that we often see Princess Anne wearing denim!). However, the combination of the two pieces together is what really gave her outfit its Chanel-esque power suit feel.

The skirt was knee-length and A-line, falling just below the bottom of the jacket. Trouser suits have risen hugely in popularity in recent years and many of us wear them as date night outfits or even as wedding guest looks, but a skirt suit like this is often overlooked as a possible alternative when you want a tailored outfit.

They’re just as easy to style and boucle skirt suits in particular are one of those French fashion staples that would make any outfit that bit more Parisian and elegant. They bring a certain polished, modest quality and so we would often lean into this with our accessories and wear knee high boots, Mary Janes or ballet flats with a skirt suit.

The Princess Royal wore low black court shoe heels and matched them to her gloves and clutch bag. Monochrome colours work well when you’re going for a very classic look like hers and the contrast of the black and white with the hints of gold was very striking. She tucked in a silk scarf to the neckline of her jacket which featured pops of blue that brought some brightness.

This was such a quintessential Princess Anne outfit and even if you’re not sure about embracing a full-on skirt suit in 2025, she also showcased how fabulous a white blazer can be. So often we find ourselves reaching for our favourite black blazer, but especially as we move into spring and summer, a white one is every bit as versatile for both daytime and evening occasions.

The Princess Royal’s jacket worked so well for the reception, which also marked the anniversaries of four global charities - International Health Partners, ShelterBox, Islamic Relief UK and Christian Aid. King Charles and Queen Camilla, who hosted the reception, were shown displays on the work of all four and a special collection of pictures from the Disasters Emergency Committee.

How does Saint Laurent follow their Spring 2024 campaign, which placed the incredible Diana Ross front and centre as the brand's muse? By featuring the iconic Michelle Pfeiffer as the face of their Spring 2025 collection, that's how!

She looked nothing short of sensational in these shots, stood against the backdrop of the New York skyline whilst modelling some very 80s-inspired oversized tailoring. I've long been a fan of trouser suits, and own some from British clothing brands like ME+EM and Mint Velvet, but wasn't convinced on the tie trend that I've seen on the runways of Armani and of course, Saint Laurent lately.

I loved Nicole Kidman channelling Julia Roberts in a similar look recently, but Michelle has me fully convinced. It takes that borrowed-from-the-boys aesthetic to another level and looks nowhere near as costume-y as I imagined. And even if this controversial accessories trend isn't for you, the crisp white shirt and double breasted blazer is absolutely the way to show everyone who's boss in 2025.

The 2025 BAFTAs has seen a plethora of stars walk the red carpet, all dressed to the nines and looking fabulous. But certain looks stick with you when watching these awards, and Jennifer Aniston's demure pinstripe suit from back in the day is one of them.

We're taking style notes from Amal Clooney again - always looking at her previous outfits for inspiration, we came across a look so timeless and elegant and just had to share.

The outfit in question was actually one she wore to officiate her wedding to George Clooney in 2014. But despite a decade passing, her stunning ivory and contrasting navy trim suit has timeless appeal. It's the perfect combination of comfort, style and elegance – so much so we'd never want to take it off.

The wide brim and structured look is stunning as well as super practical as it keeps the sun out of Amal's eyes and off of the delicate skin around the eyes and across the face - though, even if your face is as covered as Amal's in the sun, you should still be wearing one of the best facial sunscreens or at least a foundation with SPF on your face to protect from sun damage and signs of ageing.

With a pair of peep-toe sandals, again in a white tone, finishing off the outfit, Amal pulled together a stunning monochrome look for her weekend getaway.

Monochrome outfits are perfect for weekends away, especially if you're trying to save a few pennies by taking only a carry on or small suitcase with your travel capsule wardrobe inside. With Amal's all white look being made up of classic and timeless silhouettes, she can easily pair each of the pieces with any other style of any other colour and know it's going to look fabulous.

Pairing the top, sandals and sunhat with some comfortable jeans would create the ultimate elevated casual look, as would styling the wide leg suit trousers with a simple ribbed tank top and pair of stylish white trainers - and this versatility is just what you want on holiday.

Awards season never fails to showcase some breath-taking outfits but whilst the magnificent floor-length gowns aren’t going to make their way into most people’s winter capsule wardrobe, Kate Winslet’s Golden Globes look is much more wearable. The Hollywood star took to the red carpet on 5th January wearing a fabulous white suit and her choice to go for sleek tailoring definitely paid off. Kate championed one of the best British clothing brands with her co-ord, which is understood to have been a bespoke Erdem design.

The designer is beloved by everyone from the Princess of Wales to Keira Knightley and Kate Winslet’s suit was reportedly made from a silk wool material. The blazer was single-breasted with a classic lapel collar and fastened at the front with two covered buttons.

It had a streamlined shape and flared out slightly at the waist with a slightly asymmetric shape, giving us more of a glimpse of Kate’s beautiful matching trousers. When you want to feel confident and chic but still be incredibly comfortable we would always recommend going for a wide leg silhouette. Wide leg trousers have an elegant drape to them, especially if they have a crisp pleat like Kate’s had and the looser fit is so easy to wear.

Kate Winslet’s suit trousers fell right to the floor for a more dramatic, elevated look and the blazer seamlessly flowed down over them. Whilst the trousers were plain, we couldn’t help admiring the contrast of the black floral embroidery that adorned the blazer. This detailing was on the left shoulder of the jacket, as well as on the right sleeve and right side above the hem.

Although the embroidery was delicate, the black tone ensured that it stood out against the white background colour whilst still being very understated. The floral motifs were so feminine and soft and this was striking combined with the crisp tailoring of the suit. It also looked as though the flowers might have been roses or at least they had a rose-esque shape to them which could be seen as a sweet nod to one of her most iconic roles as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic.

Whether or not this was a deliberate choice for this garment, this possible hidden meaning makes Kate Winslet’s Golden Globes white suit even more special. Had she been wearing this suit in a colder climate Kate could easily have added one of her best cashmere jumpers under the jacket for some extra warmth, but for an edgy and glamorous twist at the awards in Los Angeles she wore the blazer as a top in itself.

The actor styled the suit with a pair of simple black heels and some spectacular, glimmering jewellery. Suits like Kate’s are often overlooked as being too corporate when people consider what to wear for special occasions or evenings out, but tailored pieces can be styled as casual or as dressed-up as you like. A matching suit is a brilliant option if you don’t know what to wear and don’t want to worry about putting together separate items.

After getting plenty of wear out of our favourite festive outfits in December, the start of the New Year has got us reaching for our best cashmere jumpers, warm trousers and jackets from our winter capsule wardrobe - and we’re not the only ones! The Royal Family are big fans of tailoring no matter the time of year, but Zara Tindall kicked off 2025 in style with a beautiful pinstripe blazer and matching trousers. The equestrian royal is never one to miss out on a day at Cheltenham and attended the races on New Year’s Day wearing this Veronica Beard co-ord with a gorgeous burgundy roll neck.

Styling tailored items - especially a matching suit - in a way that doesn’t seem overly corporate can sometimes seem like a challenge, but it needn’t be. If you want a blazer and trouser set that can take you from the office to evenings out then steering away from a black suit is a great way to go. Zara’s suit was a stunning navy blue with grey stripes and these are versatile neutrals that work with so many other colours but are a little softer than a full black co-ord.

It wasn’t just the colours which made Zara Tindall’s pinstriped blazer and trousers more wearable day-to-day for different occasions, but the silhouette too. The trousers were wide-leg and this relaxed design balanced out the structure of the blazer. Wide-leg tailored trousers are a comfortable choice and their elegant drape means they look gorgeous worn with everything from your best white trainers to heeled boots.

Zara Tindall chose to style her pinstripe suit with a pair of matching navy velvet heeled boots from Fairfax & Favor and added a pop of colour with her burgundy Karen Millen The Founder cashmere jumper. Currently on sale, this is a wardrobe staple with its timeless shape and seasonal shade. Burgundy has been one of the biggest autumn/winter trends in recent months but jewel tones like this are always a popular choice in the colder months.

The red of her jumper against the pinstripe blazer and trousers brought an element of contrast but kept to the same more muted colour palette and so the two tones looked so harmonious together. It might have been a typically grey January day at Cheltenham, but Zara Tindall reminded us that winter dressing can bring so much joy despite the cold weather. Whilst we’ll never neglect our knitwear, tailored pieces like her pinstripe suit are wonderful for bringing a chic feel to an outfit and making it that bit more sophisticated and polished.

As is true for many of us, power suit separates and co ords are a staple in Victoria Beckham's winter capsule wardrobe. And recently we've seen a surge in velvet suits and velvet trousers in time for the festivities. But, back in 2016, before the suit became her signature style, Victoria made a compelling argument for satin, opting for a very different style.

The monochrome outfit sure makes a statement, doesn't it? For one, the satin is a luxurious fabric, with the cut of Victoria's three piece suit showing off how thick and high quality it really is. With the power of this look resting with the shining fabric, Victoria kept her silhouettes simple. This was a great choice as too much design would've quickly taken away from the fabric or left her outfit feeling like a little 'too much.' As she often does now with her power suit looks, she kept things simple by matching all three pieces - her suit trousers, her blouse, and her blazer - so they were all navy blue and also all figure-hugging.

A black satin crew neck blouse was the perfect addition to this outfit, with the silky texture oozing elegance while also catching the light beautifully. The crew neck worked brilliantly with the smooth collar and lapels of the blazer, making it a much better option than a crisply collared shirt.

If you have black suit separates on hand to recreate this look with, but not a blazer with leopard print highlights, then adding a leopard print top, a pair of leopard print heels or a scarf with the print on it to an all-black suit look would create that same pop of interest and help you get Ruth's look with items you already own.

Although there are so many beautiful shades available in the £700 Clove Velvet Jacket and the matching £450 Clove Trousers, one colour not currently on the website is the exact purple worn by Queen Mary. It’s possible that this was either custom created or has since sold-out and either way we can totally see why Her Majesty went for this.

The purple hue is something a little different to the black, navy and burgundy velvet suits we’ve been seeing so much of this winter, but is equally easy to wear with neutrals and metallics. A deep jewel-tone like this is also wonderful at accentuating the sheen of velvet and giving it an even more luxurious feel. Even if you’re not sure about adding a full velvet suit to your winter capsule wardrobe, a velvet jacket or trousers are lovely pieces to have in your collection for party season and beyond.

To dress a velvet jacket down, throw over a cosy roll neck jumper and a pair of jeans and finish off your look with trainers or flat Chelsea boots. Similar footwear and knitwear would also work to make velvet trousers or skirts feel a little less formal. However, for a special occasion this festive season it doesn’t come much more spectacular than a co-ord like Queen Mary’s.

Her trousers were high-waisted with a slight flare and the jacket had an equally timeless silhouette, with its single-breasted cut, lapels and cinched-in waist. When you’re going for a more statement colour or fabric, it’s always clever to look out for classic designs to help balance this and make the pieces more wearable.

The Temperley Clove suit is made from Italian velvet with 2% elastane which ensured that whilst Queen Mary’s co-ord had structure, it was also comfortable to move in too. She chose not to wear the waistcoat and instead opted for a black satin cami top underneath. This complemented her velvet suit and the Queen completed her outfit with a matching purple clutch bag and black shoes.

We couldn’t be happier to see Queen Mary get on board with the velvet suit trend this winter and it’s convinced us more than ever that tailoring and velvet are the perfect combination for Christmas party outfits.

The Royal Family delivered all the Christmas party outfit inspiration we need to get through the festive season in style on Friday, as they turned out in force for Kate Middleton's Together At Christmas Carol Service at Westminister Abbey.

For the service, Zara Tindall wore a beautiful velvet suit from American designer Veronica Beard – the Veronica Beard Ellette Velvet Dickey Jacket with matching Veronica Beard Lebone Velvet Pant. The monochrome burgundy look oozed sophistication and Zara leant into the one-toned style by finishing off the outfit with a pair of burgundy kitten heels and matching wine-toned button up shirt. Monochrome outfits were everywhere at the carol service, with many royals and celebrities alike opting to wear head-to-toe burgundy outfits for the festive, luxe appeal the colour holds. Zara's stood out though, with the super soft crushed velvet fabric of her suit catching the light and demanding attention.

With a burgundy button-up shirt peaking out from the deep V-neckline of her buttoned-up, double-breasted blazer, Zara opted not to add any jewellery and this was a great choice to keep the focus on her two-piece suit - though she introduced some metallic shine in another, very clever way.

As well as carrying a stunning metallic gold clutch bag, Zara debuted a super fun festive manicure for the event, with her short nails being painted in a beautiful golden shimmer shade. Against the gold of her bag, this looked so stunning and the nail colour is a great festive choice that's sure to add a gleaming element into all your looks this season.

Further adding to the golden touches, Zara wore a stunning pair of statement earrings whose contemporary and modern floral leaf design glimmered in the Christmas fairy lights. By pulling her hair back into a chic updo, they could stand out and, by smudging some metallic eye shadow across her lower lash line, this golden element really demanded attention.

Cat wore the Julianne Blazer in Burgundy with the matching Julianne trousers which are crafted from satin and have such a beautiful drape to them. The blazer has long elongated lapels and falls to just below the waist, whilst the trousers are high-rise, with a slight flare that gives them so much movement.

Whilst Cat Deeley’s suit would’ve been show-stopping in any colour, it was taken to another level by the garnet-red tone that's she's worn a lot before. Burgundy and other deep reds are so on-trend and many people will have been tempted to add something in this colour to their winter capsule wardrobe already. A red like this is striking and yet works so well with neutral tones, meaning you can style it more subtly too.

The satin material of Cat’s birthday outfit also caught our eye and satin is a brilliant alternative to sequins and full-on sparkle for party season or other big occasions. The floral pattern is both bold and subtle, with the print boasting a sleek pinstripe design that is scattered with just a handful of flowers. The pastel blue of the petals looks beautiful against the ivory white fabric and, by wearing the suit on its own without a shirt or blouse underneath, Kate created a lovely sleek outfit.

You may also have noticed the embroidered patch on the sleeve of Kate's suit. This was a custom addition to her look and pays tribute to the legacy of the photographer Lee Miller who Kate portrays in her latest film, Lee.

Gabby Logan has given us some serious style inspiration with her bold power suit - and it’s one of our favourite looks to date.

As summer comes to an end, our capsule wardrobe inevitably becomes more muted as we fill it with more autumnal hues. Gabby Logan’s striking orange suit proves that bold colours are the ultimate power move - no matter what the season.

In her latest Instagram post, the presenter wore a power suit in a vibrant orangey, red hue - in support of Muscular Dystrophy UK. The vivid colour is different to the classic women’s trouser suits we are used to seeing Gabby in, but that doesn’t make it any less chic. If you’re looking to invest in a velvet item and want it to take you effortlessly from day-to-night then picking a warm brown or muted shade like khaki green or grey is a great way to do it. Adding a small pond to your garden might not have crossed your mind before, but this water feature can bring a lot of benefits to your space. 

Whilst ponds might not be at the forefront of this year's garden trends, they can be a great low-effort way of welcoming new wildlife into your space. So if you're particularly fond of the rewilding trend installing even a small pond is a great next step to increasing the presence of wildlife in your garden. 

We asked horticulture experts about the different ways you can add a pond to your garden and the considerations when it comes to maintaining it. 

Small pond ideas: 3 easy ways to create a garden pool

Whether you're in desperate need of small garden tips or are simply looking for a low-risk way of trying out a water element, ponds are an easy choice. You've probably thought against installing one before due to the upkeep and initial cost but it's not quite as taxing as it seems. 

1. Choose a pre-shaped pond

One of the easiest ways to add a pond to your garden is to buy a pond kit or a pre-shaped pond lining. You can find one to suit the size you need and the budget you're hoping to stick to. Ponds can be a great budget garden idea when done right!

"Start by choosing a location to outline the pond shape and then dig a hole that fits the shape and depth of the liner," suggests Petar Ivanov, garden and plant expert at Fantastic Gardeners.

After that, he says you need to add a layer of sand or soft underlayment to the hole and place the preformed liner into it. After you've levelled the pond, fill it with water, add rocks and plants then install the pump and filter should you want one.  

2. Try a flexible pond liner

Should you be after a little more creative freedom or need to accommodate for an awkward-shaped space then you can use the flexible liner option. No matter what garden theme you have, your small pond should complement it. 

"For a flexible pond liner, you will need an underlayment (geotextile fabric), a shovel, rocks, and plants for decoration, as well as a pond pump and filter. Outline and dig the pond to your desired shape and depth, remove any sharp objects from the hole, and then lay down the underlayment fabric," says Petar. 

He continues, "Place the flexible liner over the underlayment and fill it with water, smoothing out wrinkles. Trim excess liner and secure it with rocks, then decorate it with plants and rocks. Install the pump and filter if desired."

Why not incorporate the overgrown garden trend and allow your preexisting plants to surround the pond naturally? 

3. Create a container pond

If you're also looking for ways to attract birds into your garden then a container pond with a shallow area is a great idea. Ponds don't have to have fish in them and having a so-called empty pond will mean less maintenance and more seasonal visitors. 

"It’s surprisingly easy to make your own mini pond, which will be enjoyed by all sorts of wonderful wildlife," says Sean McMenemy, a nature expert and founder of Ark Wildlife. "To do this, you can use an old plant pot or a shallow dish, just be sure the pot doesn’t have a drainage hole. If it does, line it with some pond liner to keep the water inside."

Then he suggests placing large pebbles and stones within the pot to create sturdy ground for wildlife to perch on and access the water. Sean explains, "Fill the pot with water, making sure the tops of the pebbles and stones are exposed so birds and visiting insects can safely get to the water. Position your hydration station in a cool and shaded space where the birds can easily find it." 

Just be sure to change the water regularly and clean the pot thoroughly when doing so, or you might be left asking how to get rid of mosquitoes.

What benefits are there to having a small pond in your garden?

Having certain places in your garden which attract wildlife can bring your space various benefits. Incorporating mosaic gardening through ponds and untamed greenery will open a door to new wildlife and plant life. 

Tom Clifford, gardening expert at Gardenstone explains, "Not only do ponds provide a visually interesting feature within your garden but they're also a crucial source of biodiversity. Ponds attract an abundance of wildlife to your garden, not only within the water but around the edges of your pond too."

The pond itself will attract frogs, dragonflies and newts while the plants surrounding the water make ideal bathing areas for hedgehogs and birds. 

Is it expensive to maintain a pond?

Whilst a pond might not be a way to make your garden look expensive on a budget, it's not exactly going to break the bank. Where the increased costs come in is if your pond is housing fish.

"If your pond contains fish you will require a filter system in order to keep the pond clean and the fish healthy. These filter systems keep the water clear by removing excess waste produced by the fish as well as dirt that can accumulate in the pond," says Tom. 

Filter systems have to be turned on for 24 hours a day which can use up a rather hefty amount of energy, however, the perk of having a small pond is that you can use a solar-powered filter to keep it clean. Tom does point out that ponds without fish are much cheaper and easier to maintain due to the lack of filtration needed. 

Making a pond from a container you already own, be it a plant pot with lining or a large basin, is one of the best sustainable garden ideas. The wildlife it attracts will also help with pollinating your plants and eating away at your compost heap.

Once you've shopped from the best swimsuit brands and found the perfect piece, you should hang on to it. However, swimwear can easily lose its shape through sun exposure, chlorine or simply because you've enjoyed wearing it all season long.

After trying on a well-loved tankini I wore last all summer, I quickly realised the piece felt baggy and had lost its original 'tummy control' power, leaving me disheartened. However, after consulting with an expert on how to shrink a swimsuit, I've found some brilliant solutions that have helped my suit bounce back. Also, if you're wondering how often you should wash your swimwear, we've got advice on this, too.

Hyacinth Tucker, the Laundry Lady and CEO of The Laundry Basket, has offered her expert tips to help you tackle those loose swimsuits, letting us know that with the right techniques, you can bring your swimwear back to a flattering and figure-hugging fit.

How to shrink a swimsuit: The boiling method

She suggests that one of the best ways to shrink your swimsuit is the boiling water method: "Fill a pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil," Hyacinth advises, then "carefully place your swimsuit into the boiling water and let it simmer for about 10 minutes." Here, I made sure to use tongs to keep a safe distance when lowering my suit in. Make sure you always use tongs to remove the swimsuit from the pot to avoid any injuries, too (you might want to wear a pair of oven gloves, and stand back to avoid hot water drips). This process helped to tighten the fabric, reducing its size.

Once removed, rinse it off under cold water immediately to stop the shrinking process. This method is ideal for swimsuits made from natural fibres or blends that can handle the heat. However, be mindful of the specific material of your suit, as some fabrics don't respond well to high temperatures. My two-piece handled the heat well, and was made from an elastane blend, making it once again, one of the best tummy control swimsuits.

How to shrink a swimsuit: before & after

Once I had completed the boiling method, I noticed a significant change in the fit and handle of my two-piece. The material had bounced back to almost the original feel. My swimsuit has hidden tummy support that I had felt had worn off from overwear, which was my main concern, however, I have noticed that the fit after following these steps was much improved and helped to sculpt my silhouette.

How to shrink a swimsuit: A gentler approach

If you’re hesitant about boiling your swimsuit, Hyacinth suggests a more gentle approach. "Wash the suit in cool water with mild detergent first," she recommends. "Then submerge it in boiling water for fifteen minutes." This method starts with a gentle cleanse to ensure your swimsuit is free from any oils or chlorine, which could impact the shrinking process.

After soaking in boiling water, rinse the suit with cold water; this step helps to set the new size. Gently squeeze out the excess water, but avoid wringing it out, as this can distort the fabric. Place the swimsuit in a dryer on a low setting, and keep an eye on it. "Check on the suit often to avoid over-shrinking," Hyacinth says. This careful monitoring will help you achieve the desired fit without making it too tight.

How to shrink a swimsuit: Specific problem areas

Sometimes, it's not the entire swimsuit that needs shrinking, but specific problem areas, like the bottom of your swimsuit, for instance. In this scenario, Hyacinth offers a solution that includes soaking those specific areas in hot water. "Shot water helps relax the fibres, allowing for shrinkage," she explains. Meaning that you can target saggy spots by dipping only those parts into the hot water to create your desired effect.

For saggy bikini bottoms, Hyacinth offers a DIY fix, which includes adding your own straps to regular bikini bottom styles to make them into a tie-up style. She suggests, "Try attaching matching straps to the sides of the bottoms with a needle and thread." By doing a simple alteration like this, you can tighten and adjust the fit to suit your needs. Or create knots in the straps for another quick and easy way to reclaim the tightness without going through the whole shrinking process.

And if you are wondering how to (or how often to) wash your swimsuit once you've shrunk it, she suggests washing your suit with water after each use to remove chlorine, salt, and oils (such as suncream) that can weaken the fibres. Make sure you hand wash with a mild detergent and avoid using harsh chemicals, which can damage the piece. Allow it to air dry away from direct sunlight to ensure it keeps its elasticity, or put it in the dryer on a low tumble.

How tight should a swimsuit be?
