At this point, everyone knows that wearing SPF every day is a non-negotiable, but some formulas can make it feel like a slog. Finding one that works harmoniously with the rest of your routine can, in itself, feel like something of an arduous task - even with the best facial sunscreens just a click away. So, you can imagine my delight when I discovered a skin shield that not only boasts SPF50 but also doubles as a glow-booster.

Why Tatcha's The Silk Sunscreen is my go-to for daily SPF protection

While there is a temptation to retire your best SPF foundations and the like when the colder weather hits and the sun seemingly disappears, this is a big no-no. In fact, any beauty expert or member of our team would chastise this line of thinking. That said, I do acknowledge that SPF can be the furthest thing from your mind in the wind and rain and can appear to complicate your routine - whilst bringing greasiness and potential foundation piling. As someone with fairly sensitive skin, I try not to overload it with too many products, especially where my makeup routine is concerned. So, applying moisturiser followed by sunscreen, then my primer and finally my foundation and other cream-based products was always a tad over the top and potentially pore-clogging for me.

It has made wearing SPF (and a high factor one at that) so easy - to the point where I don't even think about it anymore, it's just a staple step in my routine. This is especially true in the winter months, as its hydrating formula helps to ward off dryness and keeps my complexion looking bright.

Another pro is that it's non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores. While it is an investment buy - costing £65 a pop - the level of protection it offers is unusual for this style of SPF, not to mention the fact that it essentially combines two steps and products into one very aesthetically pleasing lilac bottle.

I apply this all over my face, before makeup and after moisturiser, using my fingers, as I find this helps to distribute it evenly and ensures it melts into my skin. I then follow up with my foundation, blush and so on.

You can, of course, also wear this sunscreen on its own, with Tatcha recommending that you shake the bottle well before then applying it liberally, 15 minutes before sun exposure.

Other glowy SPFs to consider

Of course, these days when consulting the lists of best sunscreens for oily skin and tinted moisturiser with SPF, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to hybrid and multi-taking options but for me, Tatcha's is just unmatched. However, I do acknowledge that it is more of a premium buy. So if it's a tad out of your budget, there are a few other more affordable options out there - all of which offer a similar priming, glowy gleam - from the likes of e.l.f and Supergoop.

In an age where misinformation around sun protection is rife, it can be difficult to know how much of what you read or listen to on social media is accurate. That is to say, you may have questioned: does sunscreen block vitamin D production?

Most of us know that the best facial sunscreen is considered one of the most essential steps of a skincare routine by dermatologists, aestheticians and skincare experts alike. But you may also have concerns that daily sunscreen application has a knock-on effect for your skin’s vitamin D production (fortunately that’s unlikely to be the case, but we’ll get to that later.)

The best people to put such questions to are qualified skin experts, which is why we asked two consultant dermatologists for their professional takes. Here’s what they had to say about the relationship between sunscreen and vitamin D.

Does sunscreen block vitamin D? Experts break it down

How is sunscreen linked to vitamin D production?

As the NHS explains, vitamin D is important because it plays a role in regulating our calcium and phosphate levels, which keep our teeth, bones and muscles healthy. The sun emits UVB rays, which our skin converts to vitamin D. This is where the assumption that sunscreen, which shields our skin from the damage caused by UV rays, completely blocks vitamin D production stems from — but this isn’t exactly true, as our experts explain.

Does wearing sunscreen block vitamin D?

In short, no. “There is a common misconception that wearing sunscreen completely blocks vitamin D production,” says consultant dermatologist Dr. Anjali Mahto, founder of the Self London clinic. “While it is true that sunscreen can reduce the skin’s production of vitamin D by blocking UVB rays, studies show that typical sunscreen use does not usually lead to vitamin D deficiency.”

Dr Ellie Rashid, consultant dermatologist at OneWelbeck, adds that it also doesn’t take much time in the sun to produce vitamin D (anywhere from five to 30 minutes) but that this varies depending on everything from the amount of skin exposed to the time of year and UV intensity. But the bottom line is this: “The health risks associated with unprotected sun exposure, such as skin cancer and photo-ageing, far outweigh the potential for reduced vitamin D synthesis.”

No sunscreen, even when applied properly, completely blocks all UV radiation. Research has found that even an SPF of 50 only blocks 98% of UVB rays — which is why it’s so important to be as thorough as possible with your application. “The importance of diligent sunscreen use cannot be overstated,” Dr. Mahto stresses. “Sunscreen protects against harmful UV radiation, significantly reducing the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, as well as preventing premature ageing and sunburn.”

Why does everybody still need to wear sunscreen?

In case it wasn’t already made clear by our experts, everybody should protect their skin from the sun. It is not advisable to skip sunscreen application and sit in the sun with the view that you’ll be 'boosting' your vitamin D levels – a myth that Dr. Mahto says is particularly frustrating. “This misconception can lead to dangerous behaviours, increasing the risk of skin cancer and photoaging,” she says.

“Another myth is that brief, intense sun exposure is sufficient for vitamin D synthesis without harmful effects, ignoring the fact that even short periods of unprotected exposure can cause DNA damage and increase skin cancer risk over time,” she continues. Dr. Mahto also highlights the myth that people with darker skin do not need sunscreen because they are less prone to sunburn – which is false.

“While it is true that higher melanin levels provide some natural protection, it does not eliminate the risk of skin cancer or UV-induced skin damage,” she says. “Everyone, regardless of skin tone, should use sunscreen to protect their skin’s health.”

Where else can we get vitamin D from?

Though the sun is a key source of vitamin D, it’s not the only place we can get this from. “For those concerned about vitamin D levels, it is advisable to obtain it through dietary sources such as fatty fish, fortified foods and supplements if necessary, rather than risking skin damage from UV exposure,” Dr. Mahto confirms. Dr Rashid echoes this.

In the UK, government advice is that everybody takes a vitamin D supplement in the autumn and winter months. Those with darker skin tones are more at risk of this, as increased melanin affects the body’s ability to convert vitamin D, as are those who have limited exposure to sunlight because they spend little time outdoors, for example. These groups are therefore advised to supplement year-round, per the NHS. If you are concerned about deficiency, speak to your doctor who will likely organise further tests.

The bottom line is that most – if not all – dermatologists would recommend that we all wear sunscreen all year round. Here are some of our favourite formulas.

When it comes to our skincare routines and the order in which we apply our products, the last two steps are likely the same: a moisturiser followed by an SPF. But with so many of the latter now boasting hydrating ingredients, can you use sunscreen as a moisturiser instead?

The best face moisturisers and best facial sunscreens are rightfully seen as basic steps in a solid skincare regimen - if you only use two products daily, it should be these. Then again, when the temperature rises, and loading on layers of product is about as appealing as a hot bath, you've probably wondered whether you could just skip moisturiser and go straight to SPF.

So, we spoke to two consultant dermatologists and asked them straight: "Can I use sunscreen as moisturiser?" Here's what they had to say...

Can I use sunscreen as moisturiser? Two derms share their expertise

While some theorists, such as Liz Earle in how to age, say low-level morning UV exposure can have benefits, generally, the expert advice is to wear facial sunscreen every day - meaning it's tempting to try and double up. Especially when many of the best sunscreens for sensitive skin, let's say, share ingredients in common with your favourite moisturisers - like glycerin, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. But what did our go-to dermatologists think?

"It completely depends on individual skin type and the formulation of the sunscreen," says Dr. Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London. "For individuals with oily or acne-prone skin, like myself, using a heavy moisturiser beneath sunscreen can contribute to increased oiliness and potential breakouts. In these cases, a lightweight, non-comedogenic sunscreen that includes hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides can provide adequate moisture, effectively serving the dual purpose of hydration and sun protection."

Dr. Ellie Rashid, consultant dermatologist at Welbeck, agrees. "I do advise skipping moisturiser if someone has very oily skin," she tells us. "It depends on the formulation of the sunscreen; some are formulated with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and ceramides, which can all add to the hydrating finish of a sunscreen."

Who should apply both moisturiser and sunscreen?

As mentioned, "It’s absolutely fine to skip moisturiser if using sunscreen and your skin feels hydrated," says Dr. Rashid, adding that it is also "completely fine" if your skin is naturally oily. However, "If you have very dry or sensitive skin, then you may still want to use a moisturiser."

Dr. Mahto explains that this is because many modern sunscreen formulas also provide sufficient hydration and can, therefore, eliminate the necessity for a moisturiser during the day in well-balanced to oily skin types. "However, for individuals with dry or sensitive skin, a dedicated moisturiser may still be necessary to ensure proper skin hydration throughout the day," she adds.

If you know your skin feels tight and uncomfortable a few hours into the day after applying sunscreen alone, you likely need to stick with the moisturiser. As the old saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But regardless of your skin type, Dr. Rashid stresses that "Sunscreen remains the final step of any skincare routine."

So, to help clear it up, we've asked skin experts the question of when we should actually be applying our sunscreen when we're wearing makeup...

Why is it important to wear sunscreen when wearing makeup?

You may think you're protected from the sun's harmful UV rays when wearing makeup, but consultant dermatologist and Medical Director for Dermatica, Dr Catriona Maybury describes just how powerful they are: "UV rays, particularly UVA, penetrate through clouds, glass, and even makeup. We are exposed to them all year round, including in winter, and small amounts of exposure each day can add up to significant damage over the years."

Not only that, but board-certified dermatologist, Dr Alexis Stephens, details how UVA and UVB rays can lead premature ageing and skin cancer, she advises: "Daily use of sunscreen under makeup is vital in maintaining healthy skin and preventing long-term damage, ensuring that your skin remains radiant and protected."

To help avoid the damage to your complexion, such as dark spots, fine lines, pigmentation and wrinkles, Dr Maybury also suggests to: "Always use a dedicated high SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen under your makeup to protect your skin from the damaging effects of UVA and UVB rays."

When should you apply sunscreen when wearing makeup?

When it comes to application, Dr Stephens recommends applying sunscreen as the last step of your morning skincare routine: "This allows for the product to fully absorb into the skin before applying makeup and stepping outside for the day, I also highly encourage my patients to reapply sunscreen throughout the day."

It's important to allow some time before applying your makeup, Dr Maybury recommends to: "Wait a few minutes until it is fully absorbed into your skin before putting on makeup products such as foundation, concealer, powder, blusher, and eyeshadows."

Do makeup products with SPF in them offer enough sun protection?

Whilst there are many makeup products on the market that contain SPF, Dr Maybury warns how they don't offer sufficient protection to be using them on their own: "Unfortunately, most makeup products do not contain sunscreen ingredients, and even if they do, they often do not contain enough SPF and other relevant ingredients to protect against both UVA and UVB rays."

Dr Stephens adds: "Despite the prevalent misconception that using makeup products with SPF covers all your sun protection needs, it’s crucial for everyone to use sunscreen, as well. While makeup products with SPF provide some protection against UV radiation, they are largely insufficient in preventing long-term concerns on their own."

To ensure you're complexion is fully protected from the sun, even whilst you're wearing makeup, you can double up by using a skincare product that includes SPF, such as Olay's Total Effects SPF 30 Moisturiser, alongside your regular sunscreen.

Why the L'Oréal Paris Revitalift Clinical Anti-UV Fluid SPF 50+ is such a brilliant sunscreen

You may already be a fan of L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Clinical Anti-UV Fluid, in which case, it’s a very good time to add a couple of them to your online shopping basket before this offer times out. But let me break down why it’s so great for those who aren’t familiar with this drugstore buy.

Firstly, its got a high SPF rating (50+) as well as offering broad-spectrum, meaning it shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. These are harmful to the skin and between them cause visible skin ageing, burning and skin damage that can turn into skin cancer. 

But as well as its high protection, the formula also contains a vitamin C derivative, ascorbyl glucoside. While it’s not quite the same as using one of the best vitamin C serums, it still provides the skin with some additional antioxidant benefits to help fortify its environmental protection.

Your choice of formula is mostly "down to personal preference," notes cosmetic physician Dr Emmaline Ashley. So if you find a high-performing sunscreen that you get on with, stick with it. "Body formulations can be thicker and more hydrating to cover larger areas," says Dr Raquel Amado, director and medical practitioner at Dr Raquel Skin and Medical Cosmetics. This means they are usually formulated differently and likely won’t be appropriate for the more delicate facial skin.  

Because of this, Dr Catriona Maybury, consultant dermatologist and Dermatica's medical director, advises "making sure your sunscreen is designed to be used on the face. Body sunscreens often have a thicker texture, or are heavily fragranced, which could be comedogenic [pore clogging]."

Should you use different SPF ratings on your face and body?

You may be tempted to settle for a lesser factor on the body, as it’s true that the skin on the face is slightly more delicate and generally gets more daily sun exposure. But it’s always better to go higher for optimal protection, particularly when on holiday in a hot country where you may have more 

"As long as SPF is broad spectrum and SPF 50+, use whatever sunscreen you will be happy to use every single day," says Dr Emmaline. Check that both of your chosen formulas offer UVB and UVA protection (usually confirmed through the term "broad spectrum") to cover all bases – UVB causes sunburn, while UVA causes skin ageing.

For body sunscreen, it's sensible to opt for something water-resistant for a beach holiday, but do remember to re-apply after any time you have been for a swim or got very sweaty. These SPFs still break down in water, gradually becoming less effective and usually lasting no longer than 40 minutes (or 80 minutes in the case of "very water-resistant") while swimming.

Why SPF scalp sprays are an essential in your beach bag

Tending to occur in areas where the hair is thin or has been parted, sunburnt scalps can cause an array of unwanted symptoms, from redness and itchiness to flakiness and painful to touch areas. That’s all without mentioning the damaging effects UV rays can have on the rest of your locks, Dr Williams also explains: "It can degrade the hair's protein structure (keratin), leading to weakened, brittle hair that is prone to breakage and split ends. UV rays can also fade hair colour, both natural and dyed, reducing the vibrancy and altering the hair's aesthetic."

How to protect your scalp from the sun

When it comes to protecting your scalp from the sun's UV rays, Dr Williams advises: "Use hair care products that contain UV protectants, are rich in antioxidants or sunscreens formulated for the scalp. Limit exposure to direct sunlight, especially during midday when UV radiation is strongest."

Anabel Kingsley recommends: "Wearing a hat is ideal, or using an SPF cream on the scalp too, however if this is not possible then it is important to use protective products."

Adding a generous spritz of SPF spray to your morning routine before heading out the door means you can go about your day knowing that your scalp is protected from the sun. Whether you’re lounging by the poolside, having a beach day or out and about sightseeing, it’s important to make sure that you keep reapplying the product throughout the day - especially if you’re in and out of the water - to prevent it from losing its effectiveness.

I turned 44 this year, and up to about two weeks ago, only wore SPF if I was on holiday or it was sunny outside. I have very pale skin, and so am always careful when it comes to protecting it from the sun. But when it came to wearing it every day, even inside, the thought didn't even cross my mind. 

I thought I understood the importance of SPF when it came to skin damage, but after speaking to Paula's Choice Skincare Education Manager in the UK, Heather Wish, I realised my education on the subject was severely lacking. For example, even the best foundations with SPF is not enough to keep you fully protected. 

"UVA rays are here 100% of the time. They go through windows and clouds and cause damage to your skin that you can't feel happening," Heather says. "Around 80-90% of premature skin ageing in terms of fine lines, discolouration is down to UV damage from the sun. I was in Manchester last week and met a lady who wanted to buy eye cream for fine lines and wrinkles, but didn't wear SPF every day. 

"Going for ingredients to reverse damage but not wearing SPF is counterintuitive – if you're not using an SPF, you're not protecting yourself from what's causing the damage in the first place, so the fine lines are still going to happen.'

After a length chat with Heather, I immediately put some SPF on my face, hands, neck - basically any skin that is always on show - and have done so every day since. Here are the three reasons you should too... 

1. 90% of melanoma skin cancer could be prevented

As confirmed by Cancer Research UK, 'too much UV radiation is the 3rd biggest cause of cancer and the main cause of skin cancer in the UK. Every time you have prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun (and therefore UV radiation) you are increasing your risk of skin cancer. The good news is that around 9 in 10 cases of melanoma skin cancer in the UK could be prevented by staying safe in the sun and avoiding sunbeds.'

As someone who has had skin cancer removed from the top of their scalp, I am all too aware of the dangers of sun exposure. Covering up and regularly applying SPF while in the sun can, quite literally, save your life.  

2. It slows down the ageing process

Sun rays deplete your skins natural levels of collagen and anything else that keeps your skin healthy. SPF provides a barrier on your skin from the sun to prevent and slow that process down.  

"It is estimated that around 90% of skin ageing is due to damage from the sun," Heather explains. "Now, imagine for a moment you protect your skin against the harmful rays of the sun on a daily basis, therefore stopping much of that damage from occurring. Any anti-ageing skin care routine must include the daily application of a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater. It is the number one anti-wrinkle, anti-dark spot, anti-sagging product you can use."

3. It's never too late

Another reason I wasn't overly fussed about SPF every day before was I thought I was past the point - or age - where it would make a difference. But when speaking to Heather, I asked if my face would look visibly different in 10 years if I stopped wearing it. 

"If you were to compare your skin in 10 years time with using SPF to without, yes there would be a visible difference. Obviously SPF is preventative, rather than reversing damage that has already been done, but apperance-wise you would absolutely see a difference. You still want to protect your skin, it's still important at any age.

"Research has shown that it’s never too late to start protecting your skin. In fact, people with sun damaged skin (and that includes all of us) who started using a broad spectrum sunscreen later in life saw a noticeable reduction in every visible sign of ageing. No matter your age, daily sunscreen use is the foundation of a brilliant skin care routine."

There’s a reason we speak so much about the importance of sunscreen. It will protect your skin from cancer-causing UV rays and, with skin cancer cases on the rise, it’s always worth reminding yourself to keep your skin shielded. "Using sunscreen daily is crucial for everyone, regardless of skin tone, because it provides an extra layer of protection against both UVA and UVB rays," she says. "UV rays can penetrate the skin and cause damage. Sunscreen works by absorbing, reflecting, or scattering the UV rays, thus preventing them from reaching the deeper layers of the skin."

"You will notice a reduction in pigmentation if you wear sunscreen daily," says Dr Sophie Momen, Consultant Dermatologist at OneWelbeck. "UV exposure accelerates the ageing process by breaking down collagen and elastin fibres in the skin," warns Dr Ejikeme.

UVA rays are the ones responsible for skin ageing, while UVB causes sunburn – think A for ageing and B for burning. So while you may not necessarily burn on a gloomy January day, UVA rays are present all year round, which is why it's important to wear suncare daily on any exposed areas. 

"Daily use of SPF helps protect against photoageing, which includes deep wrinkles and fine lines caused by sun exposure," confirms Dr Amado.

3. A radiant complexion

"Ageing from the sun makes your skin dry and less luminous," explains Dr Momen. "Regular sunscreen application will make your skin appear better hydrated and radiant." Firstly, opt for a sunscreen that boasts a non-comedogenic formula, this means that they won't block your pores - which is particularly important for those with oily skin. "If you have oily skin then you need to look for an SPF which doesn’t include certain oils such as coconut oil, cocoa butter, mineral oil, also ingredients such as petrolatum, silicones and glycerine as all of these work to moisturise the skin by creating a shine and greasy finish," advises medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics, Dr Ross Perry.

"Try and aim for sunscreen which provides a matte finish and silica gel which absorbs oil. Opt for noncomedogenic which basically means the SPF product contains ingredients that won't clog the pores. It’s also worth purchasing SPF which comes in the form of a gel/lightweight rather than a thick cream."

Echoing this advice, Dr Zainab Laftah, consultant dermatologist at GetHarley advises, "If you have oily skin or a tendency to break out with sunscreens I would recommend opting for non-comedogenic sunscreens that have been formulated for acne-prone skin. Often these have lower oil content and are lighter in consistency."

When do I wear sunscreen?

Sunscreen is one of the most – if not the most – essential steps in anyone's skincare routine. Wearing broad-spectrum sun protection every day, protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, significantly reduces premature visible ageing of your complexion and the risk of developing skin cancer.

While some theorists, such as Liz Earle in how to age, say low-level morning UV exposure can have benefits, generally the expert advice is to wear facial sunscreen every day. While some people believe that wearing sunscreen blocks your body's ability to produce vitamin D, there is no evidence it leads to deficiency – particularly as we also get vitamin D through our diet, with UK government advice being that most of us should supplement in the winter.

In fact, the advice is for us to still wear sunscreen in winter, even in cloudy and dull weather, as UV rays still penetrate through clouds and glass year round. We hate to break it to you, but your moisturiser with SPF doesn't cut it – especially not in summer, when UV radiation is higher – so be sure to apply a sunscreen after your skincare routine.

Does the SPF in foundation work and can it replace your usual SPF?

As mentioned, nowadays you’ll find UV protection in everything from face moisturiser with SPF to foundations. But is it possible to rely on moisturiser and makeup as your main form of sun defence? Abi Cleeve, MD of Ultrasun, says not. Firstly, the SPF rating stipulates the level of protection from UVB only. "Many foundations with SPF only offer protection from UVB rays and not UVA rays, which penetrate the skin’s surface and do long-term damage," she says.

Another issue is the amount you need to apply to achieve the SPF on the bottle. "The official guidelines given by Colipa – the European cosmetic industry association – are 2mg/cm2; approximately one teaspoon's worth for the face," says Abi. As noted above, "SPF foundations are applied a lot more thinly, thus not providing the same level of protection as 'pure' sunscreens." The message is clear: apply a separate sunscreen first for rigorous protection. Abi recommends an SPF of 30 or more: "Choose one with broad spectrum protection to prevent damage from both UVA and UVB rays."

What are the benefits of foundation with SPF?

While even the best SPF foundation won't provide the same level of broad-spectrum cover that sunscreens do, Abi still sees SPF in makeup as a positive. "SPF in foundation is great as a bonus and also contributes to the overall awareness of the need for UV protection," she says.

What does the SPF number mean in skincare?

Though we generally use the term to describe sun protection products, like sun cream, the SPF rating only applies to UVB rays, which are the kind that cause the skin to burn. As noted by skincare brand CeraVe, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks 98%.

Protection from UVA rays, which cause premature ageing in the skin, may be indicated by a PA or star rating. However, the key term to look out for is "broad spectrum". This indicates that a formula shields skin from both UVA and UVB radiation for well-rounded protection. To maintain this protection, reapply your chosen sunscreen every two hours.

We hear about it time and time again from experts: the importance of daily sunscreen application to support skin's health and reduce visible signs of ageing. Sensitive skin varies hugely in terms of what might "set it off", meaning finding the best sunscreens for sensitive skin isn't a one size fits all situation. With this in mind, we put dozens of formulas to the test with at least one full day of work each on multiple testers with various types of sensitivity. • Chemical vs physical: There are two main types of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Very generally speaking, chemical-based sunscreens use filters like octinoxate, avobenzone and oxybenzone to absorb the rays of the sun and convert them into heat. Physical sunscreens work by bouncing away the sun's UV rays from the skin's surface. "I would recommend seeking physical sunscreens," explains Dr Vig. "They are a gentler option and contain ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are less likely to cause irritation as chemical sunscreens do."
• Consider fragrance-free: "Fragrance is a blanket term for essential oils and perfumes, so it’s difficult to discern exactly what ingredients are being included and how your skin may react," notes Cindy Ha, lead aesthetician at Fairmont Spa Century Plaza. Perfume can also cause allergic contact dermatitis, which manifests as red, blotchy, scaly patches that are itchy. Of course, it's possible for something else entirely to cause irritation in a non-fragranced skincare product, which is why it's always worth doing a patch test before slathering a new product all over your skin.
• Be mindful of sensitising ingredients: We know we're stating the obvious, but if you know that certain skincare ingredients trigger your skin, ensure that any potential new sunscreen doesn't feature them on its INCI (ingredient) list.

Do you need to wear sunscreen every day?

While some theorists, such as Liz Earle in how to age, say low-level morning UV exposure can have benefits, generally the expert advice is to wear facial sunscreen every day for multiple reasons. Firstly, sunscreen will protect your skin from UV damage and burning, which increases your risk of skin cancer. But not only that, UV radiation also causes photoageing (accelerated skin ageing), so applying sunscreen 365 days a year will help to shield your skin and prevent this, too. Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen as this term means it will protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

How often do you have to reapply sunscreen?

Ensuring you apply sunscreen every day is the first step, but that protection doesn't last all day long – you'll need to top up while you're outside. The golden rule is to reapply every two hours, after exercise or going in water – so if you're on holiday and regularly going in the sea or a swimming pool, be sure to dry off and then liberally reapply your sun protection of choice. Does sunscreen expire?

While some are longer than others, all beauty products have a shelf life, so sunscreen does expire, yes. In fact, it's all the more important in the case of sun protection; if the UV filters are out of date, your skin won't be protected from the sun's damaging rays.

One of two packaging symbols (both of which are visible below) indicates how long a skincare product lasts. An open box containing a number and the letter M – e.g. "12M" – means the product should be used within 12 months of opening. In this case, it's sensible to write the day you opened it somewhere on the packaging so you don't forget.

The other symbol to note is a black and white egg timer, which indicates the product has a max shelf life of 30 months. It will therefore also have a use-by date on the packaging; both symbols and a use by date are visible on the above product as an example.

If the use by date sits on the external packaging – e.g. the cardboard box – but not the bottle, make sure you write it on the actual product to remind you when it's time to dispose of any remaining sunscreen and buy a new one. But as sunscreen should be applied daily, you're unlikely to get to that point.

This question often comes up in the run-up to summer as, while we all know it’s crucial to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, many people also love having sun-kissed skin. But is there such thing as a ‘healthy’ tan?

Ask any dermatologist or doctor about the most important step in a skincare routine is and they’ll likely say sun protection, . “It is essential to wear one of the best facial sunscreens every day, even when it’s cloudy,” confirms Dr Catharine Denning, advanced aesthetic doctor. “This healthy habit will reduce the likelihood of sun damage.” And as we know, sun damage not only increases the risk of skin cancer but also premature skin ageing and pigmentation.

Can you still get a tan with sunscreen on?

To answer this question, we first need to recap the different types of UV. “The sun's UV rays are predominantly made up of two wavelengths, UVA and UVB,” explains Dr Denning. “UVB is responsible for burning, skin cancer and a small proportion of tanning, while UVA penetrates deeper into the skin to damage DNA that can lead to ageing, some skin cancers, and tanning.” (To remember the main difference, think A for ageing and B for burning.)

Dr Denning continues: “Sun protection factor, AKA SPF, only protects you from UVB rays and not UVA rays, so using a sunscreen with SPF only will not prevent your skin from tanning” – nor will it protect your skin from skin cancer and ageing. “To protect against UVA damage, a broad-spectrum sunscreen is key," Dr Denning concludes.

Given that approximately 95% of the UV radiation that reaches earth is UVA, wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen is really important. What’s more, “In the UK, while UVB levels fluctuate with the seasons, UVA remains relatively static through the year,” says Dr Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist and founder of Self London. So, wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen in winter is just as important as it is in summer. “UVA will also penetrate window glass,” Dr Mahto adds, hence why experts recommend wearing some form of sunscreen indoors and while driving.

In short, a broad-spectrum sunscreen does prevent tanning to an extent (though even an SPF 50 will only shield the skin from 98% of UVB radiation when applied properly), but it also provides protection against harmful UVA rays – something that SPF alone does not.

How does sunscreen work in the skin?

Sunscreen acts as an invisible shield that either absorbs, reflects or scatters UV rays to protect skin against sun damage. Most modern formulas offer broad-spectrum protection and usually fall into one of two categories: mineral or chemical (though some formulas use a combination of both kinds of filters).

“Mineral sunscreen, otherwise known as a physical sunscreen, contains active ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that reflect UV rays away from the skin,” says Dr Mahto. By contrast, chemical sunscreen absorbs these rays, converting them to heat, which is then released through the skin. “Chemical sunscreens need to be applied at least 20 minutes before going outside, while mineral sunscreens work instantly,” Dr Mahto adds.

Both types of sunscreens are effective and choosing the best SPF products for you largely comes down to personal preference. “Those following a skincare routine for sensitive skin may find that mineral sunscreens are better than those with chemical filters,” says Dr Mahto. Meanwhile those who prefer lightweight textures may gravitate towards chemical sunscreens, which can feel easier to rub in.

Either way, the key is to ensure that you’re fully protected—“a rough rule of thumb is a teaspoon per body area, so one teaspoon for your face, head, and neck,” Dr Mahto recommends, as well as knowing how to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after you've swimming or exercising.

Is there a safe way to tan?

The feeling of the sun warming your skin can be difficult to beat, especially when it results in a bronze glow. But, as the experts confirm, there is no such thing as a healthy suntan. In fact, it's your skin's response to damage.

“The skin produces melanin (the skin pigment that we see as a tan) in response to UV damage to the dermis,” explains Dr Denning. This means that any change to your skin colour – be it a tan or redness – is a sign of skin damage. Protecting skin from tanning with a broad-spectrum sunscreen is therefore a must if you want to future-proof your face and body.

As for the feel-good factor of sun exposure, “this is just as much from the warmth of the sun and light levels reaching your eyes,” says Dr Denning, adding that if it’s sun-kissed skin that you’re after, “It is by far safer to use one of the best self tans from a bottle than it is to rely on the sun".
