It’s easy to fall head over heels for the new-in summer dresses and raffia accessories, but never forget basics are an essential part of any wardrobe. Without them, you wouldn’t have the staple building blocks to build outfits around, and a plain T-shirt is a must-have for me.

They work with smart tailoring and casual denim, though Emilia Fox just wore a simple black Tee with a rather stunning skirt. She attended Henley Festival as a guest of Audi, and put her classic top to good use as it balanced out her voluminous ME+EM maxi skirt.

Crafted from tulle with embroidered pink flowers running all over, this cream skirt is a showstopper, and it’s now only available in one size online. The waistband is black which blended seamlessly into her T-shirt, like they were made for each other.

If the Silent Witness star had opted for a white T-shirt instead, the band would have been more obvious and waist-defining. However, there would also have been quite a stark contrast between the lighter top, the rest of the skirt, and this waistband.

Her black T-shirt worked much better in my opinion to soften the final look. It had a crew-neckline and short sleeves, with a fitted silhouette that lent itself to being tucked in. Leaving a T-shirt loose and draped over a waistband is an easy way to make an ensemble more low-key, though Emilia went more polished for Henley.

The T-shirt and voluminous skirt combination came together to create a smart-casual outfit and this is why a top like this is so useful. Emilia Fox’s skirt naturally felt quite elevated thanks to its length, tulle fabric and intricate embroidery and the top balanced this.

Long skirt outfits can be tricky to put together but this is a good formula to follow in summer and you can mix up your T-shirts and choose a pattern if your skirt is plain. Another way to wear maxi skirts is with a blazer and Emilia also did this at Henley.

I suspect she was wearing the Sharp Shoulder Tux Blazer, also by ME+EM. As the weather has been so warm, she didn’t need to wear it all the time and held it draped over her shoulder for some photographs.The lapels were satin and it was single-breasted and longline.

If you want to wear a blazer with a high-waisted skirt or trousers I would suggest going for a jacket that’s either long like hers, or intentionally cropped. This way it will either hit below the waistband or line up with it.

Something in the middle can sometimes cut off your silhouette and feel quite traditional instead of contemporary. Emilia Fox’s blazer brought structure to her look and she accessorised with a dainty chain necklace and sparkly hoop earrings.

It showed how to wear a basic T-shirt in a more elevated way and in June she also styled another blazer and maxi skirt together. The actor appeared on Good Morning Britain and this time she went for a shirt with a striped ME+EM skirt and orange Holland Cooper blazer.

I think a white T-shirt would have been great with these pieces and when the weather is really hot, you can swap Tees for neutral vest tops.

While Sophie could have leaned into the skirt's bold colors, she instead toned down the statement piece with some brilliant styling. Opting for a navy blue top, matching blazer, and navy ankle boots, the skirt suddenly doesn't seem so daunting to step out in.

Sophie kept her makeup minimal - again proving that a bold, statement skirt can be dressed down and made versatile - and relied on a favorite look of hers for her hair.

We've all got a floating maxi skirt hanging up in our wardrobes, though ours may not be from luxury Spanish designer Adolfo Dominguez, and her plain and simple crew neck jumper is a staple that's easily paired with the style for an elevated everyday look.

Just as roll neck jumpers and knee high boots will always be everywhere as soon as autumn arrives, spring and summer is the season where we see an abundance of floral midi dresses hitting the high street and online.

We have several in our collection and they make great wedding guest dresses as well as everyday outfits, depending on the material and silhouette. This year, though, we’ve been longing for something a little different and Queen Mary of Denmark has presented a floral maxi skirt as an equally elegant alternative. Her Majesty wore a floral Lasse Spangenberg skirt with a dramatic floor-sweeping hem for a Gala Dinner at the Élysée Palace on 31st March.

The event was hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron on Day 1 of Mary and King Frederik’s State Visit. We’re used to seeing the British Royal Family go all-out both when they host and attend State Banquets, wearing floor-length gowns, magnificent jewellery and often tiaras too.

In contrast, the Danish Queen went slightly more low-key but still dazzling on this occasion. Her maxi skirt was high-rise and had a fitted waistband that accentuated its fit-and-flare shape. It was grey and this neutral base made the delicate floral print shine even more in contrast.

The Queen of Denmark paired it with a Victoriana-style CLEA embroidered white shirt with blouson sleeves that was tucked neatly into the waistband for a seamless finish.

Although hers was an especially dramatic take on a floral maxi skirt, Queen Mary reminded us that we should never discount them as an alternative to dresses. They are great when you want a formal or smart-casual outfit as the longer length naturally feels quite elevated. You can dress them down by wearing a maxi skirt with a loose T-shirt and plimsoll trainers or espadrilles, or dress them up with high heels and a silky shirt.

Whilst you can of course style a midi dress in multiple ways, you can make a skirt look radically different with a lot less effort and they are even more versatile because of this. Her Majesty wore her skirt and blouse with a pair of Gianvito Rossi court shoe heels in beige satin and a fun, pearl-embellished clutch by Anya Hindmarch.

This bag is sadly no longer available but pearl bags are continuing to have a moment right now so there are plenty of alternatives out there that give a similar glamorous edge to an outfit. The Queen has had a lot of use out of hers so far in 2025 as she also brought this clutch on her and King Frederik’s State Visit to Finland in March.

The couple are in France until 2nd April and we can look forward to seeing Queen Mary wearing some more elegant outfits before they return to Denmark.

Nicole's skirt is the The Agave Skirt by Jacquemus, which debuted on the runway in January 2025. At £1,120, it's not the most affordable designer piece out there, nor is it the most expensive, but it is easy to get Nicole's look on the high-street and on a budget.

These budget-friendly pieces aren't often called trumpet skirts outright, so instead you want to look for drop waist midi skirts which skim the waist and hips tightly before floating down into fuller skirts. This gave the collared piece a really interesting flair that worked so well against the unique shape of her skirt - we didn't know the classic button-up could look any more sophisticated than it already did, but the zip is a welcome update!

To bring some colour to the black and white outfit, Nicole slipped into a pair of red strappy heels, with the barely-there style making sure the colour was kept minimal though still impactful for a bold finishing touch.

There are so many different ways to put together monochrome outfits and while we love the bright and bold look of head-to-toe yellow just as much as we adore softer all-neutral outfits, nothing feels quite so chic as black and white.

Another day in the glorious Costa Rican sunshine, another mini skirt outfit from Holly Willoughby that we just can’t get out of our heads. The Celebrity Bear Hunt host has been sharing snapshots of her outfits styled by Dannii Whiteman for each episode of the Netflix survival series and her look for episode 6 was Western-inspired perfection. The Western trend isn’t a specific spring/summer fashion trend for 2025 but it’s been massively popular for several years now and Holly Willoughby’s fringed mini skirt was a fun take on it.

The skirt was by Understated Leather x Revolve Paris Texas and although it also comes in a neutral sand tone, Holly went for the pastel pink version instead. Crafted from suede, this skirt is a stand-out piece and has a rather luxurious price tag, though there are so many faux suede and leather skirts around right now that also give a Western feel.

Holly’s mini skirt has a side zip closure and raised stud details throughout. If that wasn’t already Western-inspired enough, it also has bold fringing that runs from the sides and all the way around the back. This is one of those skirts that makes an instant statement, though the soft texture of the suede and pale pink tone mellows it a little.

It had a classic A-line shape and the high-waisted cut means it’s easy to tuck in a top or shirt to create a streamlined silhouette. Not everyone will be eager to add a petal pink suede fringed mini skirt to their collection, but Holly Willoughby’s skirt has certainly inspired us to dip our toe into the Western trend and wear fringed pieces a lot more.

She styled her skirt with a Re/Done black T-shirt with a simple crew neckline and short sleeves. Her matching black biker boots were from her collaboration with Grenson, which is one of the best British clothing brands and has been handmaking shoes since 1866. We’ve seen Holly wear these several times for Celebrity Bear Hunt and their edginess was a contrast against the skirt.

To lean into the Western trend even more we would’ve swapped these sturdy boots for suede boots, perhaps with some fringing to tie in with her skirt. In the warm Costa Rican weather Holly didn’t need tights, but if you wanted to recreate a similar look as we head into UK spring they’d be a practical choice. You can embrace this trend in a number of ways, including with denim, but also with suede jackets and longer suede skirts.

Studded boots or jackets would also give a Western feel to an outfit, as would those with fringing like the details on Holly’s skirt. This look wasn’t the only one she wore in episode 6 of Celebrity Bear Hunt, though. Holly also shared a glimpse of her bright red mini dress from Rixo on Instagram, which she wore with the same black cleated boots. This was equally fun and is an outfit that we'd also love to put our twist on for summer.

Princess Anne wore a white and gold skirt suit to a royal reception and it oozed elegance just like a Chanel two-piece.

Princess Anne has such a distinctive style and although she regularly champions the best British clothing brands, her outfit for a reception at Buckingham Palace on 20th February reminded us of classic French fashion. The King’s sister wore a white skirt suit to the event, which was held to celebrate exceptional individuals and organisations who are contributing towards humanitarian efforts across the globe. Princess Anne’s outfit was suitably timeless and formal for the occasion and the double breasted blazer and skirt together reminded us of Chanel co-ords.

The French fashion house is known for their boucle or tweed style jackets and skirts and although the fabric of Princess Anne’s skirt suit wasn’t the same fabric, it had a similar feel with its gold-toned buttons and very feminine, proper silhouette. The blazer was double-breasted and the longline length gave it a more retro edge.

It had a fit-and-flare silhouette which is always gorgeous if you want to accentuate your waist. It’s not as commonly seen with blazers and gave Princess Anne’s jacket a peplum-esque shape that draped over her matching white skirt. The structured shoulders and notched lapels were beautiful and the gleaming gold buttons added glamour.

Even without the skirt this would have been a stand-out wardrobe staple that could’ve been thrown over everything from tailored trousers to jeans (not that we often see Princess Anne wearing denim!). However, the combination of the two pieces together is what really gave her outfit its Chanel-esque power suit feel.

The skirt was knee-length and A-line, falling just below the bottom of the jacket. Trouser suits have risen hugely in popularity in recent years and many of us wear them as date night outfits or even as wedding guest looks, but a skirt suit like this is often overlooked as a possible alternative when you want a tailored outfit.

They’re just as easy to style and boucle skirt suits in particular are one of those French fashion staples that would make any outfit that bit more Parisian and elegant. They bring a certain polished, modest quality and so we would often lean into this with our accessories and wear knee high boots, Mary Janes or ballet flats with a skirt suit.

The Princess Royal wore low black court shoe heels and matched them to her gloves and clutch bag. Monochrome colours work well when you’re going for a very classic look like hers and the contrast of the black and white with the hints of gold was very striking. She tucked in a silk scarf to the neckline of her jacket which featured pops of blue that brought some brightness.

This was such a quintessential Princess Anne outfit and even if you’re not sure about embracing a full-on skirt suit in 2025, she also showcased how fabulous a white blazer can be. So often we find ourselves reaching for our favourite black blazer, but especially as we move into spring and summer, a white one is every bit as versatile for both daytime and evening occasions.

The Princess Royal’s jacket worked so well for the reception, which also marked the anniversaries of four global charities - International Health Partners, ShelterBox, Islamic Relief UK and Christian Aid. King Charles and Queen Camilla, who hosted the reception, were shown displays on the work of all four and a special collection of pictures from the Disasters Emergency Committee.

We love knee high boots with any outfit, with the sleek, leg-elongating style working alongside so many different wardrobe staples to give an elevated feel to even the most casual outfits of 'jeans and a nice top.' But Sarah Jessica's purple style? Well, the classic black leather boot and brown suede style will always have a place in our hearts, but Sarah's bright purple take is too stunning not to try out for ourselves.

The purple is such a rich and luxe shade that simply oozes style and sophistication - can we expect anything less from Carrie Bradshaw herself? With a chic pointed toe and comfortable, mid-height block heel, the boots boast beautiful rouched detailing at the ankle which ties in subtly with the stunning ruffled detailing running down the front of her dress.

The boots also compliment the length of the midi dress, with the hem falling at the mid-calf. It can be a tricky length to style, with flat shoes like ballet flats of loafers sometimes feeling like they cut off the leg too much and you don't always want to step out in sleek court heels for your day-to-day errand running. So a pair of knee high boots like Sarah's are a great option that not only give the leg tonnes of length while bringing colour into your outfit, but also add some of that extra warmth we need in the winter and transitional months before spring.

As well as the styling trick of using statement footwear to bring colour into monochrome outfits, Sarah used a great hack that made her midi-length ruffled gown feel, while elevated, still casual enough to wear for a lunch date or dinner party.

She did this by adding a knitted cardigan over the strapless bodice of her dress. This brought in tonnes of cosy texture as it offered some coverage to the strapless style as well as a lovely pop of texture into the look too. It's a real masterclass in styling formal wear as casual wear so you can get the most out of your spring capsule wardrobe this year.

We'd never thought of incorporating sheer midi skirts into our casual wear until seeing how chic Renée Zellweger looked in her lace skirt, simple jumper and low ponytail.

Knee high boots have taken over our winter capsule wardrobes, with the comfortable, chic and oh-so cosy style being perfect for the cooler months. We love them especially for the way they make styling skirts in the chillier seasons a breeze and we're definitely keeping them on hand as staples in our spring capsule wardrobes too, going without tights or thick socks to transition them into the slightly warmer season.

We've not seen many celebrities step out in thigh high styles, but of course Shania braved it and stepped out in the statement look - she's always been incredibly fashion forward and we love her for it. But if you love knee highs and know how to style knee high boots, then it's not that much of a stretch to style thigh highs, though it might feel daunting at first.

Pairing them with a mini skirt or dress is undoubtedly the best way to go to let the style shine, but pairing them with longer dresses and maxi skirts can give you the exact same look at knee highs, just with a little added warmth further up the leg - and don't we all need that on those windy evenings?

Alison Hammond banished the winter blues with her cobalt jumper and matching ombré skirt on a January episode of This Morning.

Spring might be edging ever closer but the weather means it’s not quite time to pack away our winter capsule wardrobe yet and it’s all-too-easy to fall into a pattern of wearing the same jeans, jumper, boots and coat day after day. Of course, this formula is a seasonal staple for a reason but one way to switch things up is by injecting a bit of colour. Our current pick is cobalt blue which is navy’s bolder cousin and yet works just as well with all the same colours - as Alison Hammond just proved. She was styled by the brilliant Rachael Hughes for This Morning on 17th January and showed a glimpse at her cobalt blue outfit on Instagram.

It’s crafted from a cotton-blend and has a regular fit and handy side splits at the hem for ease of movement. The attention-to-detail on Alison’s jumper makes it really stand out, with a textured stitch pattern at the shoulders giving it more dimension. Had this been a black or white jumper - or even pastel pink or khaki in line with the biggest spring/summer fashion trends for 2025 it would still have been fabulous, but the blue was another level.

Cobalt is a tone that will always make an impact but doesn’t require careful styling as much as a sunshine yellow or lime green might, for example. It can be paired with black, white, grey and camel, as well as red or even orange which is opposite blue on the colour wheel and is a contrasting but complementary tone.

When you want to add a splash of colour to an everyday outfit a jumper like Alison’s is an easy way to do it as it is only a small part of an overall outfit, but if you want to go all-in a cobalt blue dress or jumpsuit would also be fabulous. The This Morning star wore her jumper with a black and cobalt ombré midi skirt and the blend of the neutral and brighter colours right down into the pleats highlighted this beautiful detail even more.

Alison then added to the blue and black combination with her choice of footwear - a pair of simple black ballet flats. When we want the comfort of trainers but the style of heels then ballet flats are a good in-between as they bring a polished feel to an outfit. These ones were square-toed which was a little more contemporary than classic rounded ballet pumps.

Sticking to just two key colours from head-to-toe was so striking and showed us all how to style this colour to bring some brightness to our winter style. Cobalt is a hue we’ve seen Alison wear before, including last winter when she wore a fun blue leopard print shirt. This was a slightly more statement look and she paired the shirt with a black top underneath, black loafers and dark indigo jeans.

Cat Deeley's latest herringbone look on This Morning falls perfectly in line with the British heritage dressing trend we've been spotting everywhere this past year.

Traditional British fabrics, from tartan to tweed, have been dominating the fashion world for the last year, and they are still set to play a part in the spring/summer fashion trends of 2025. So when I spotted this herringbone statement skirt look on Cat Deeley, I desperately wanted to recreate it.

The exact skirt is the Herringbone Pattern skirt by Self-Portrait, a staple that taps into this trend whilst being easy to style with a variety of staples from your winter capsule wardrobe. She teams the tailored midi skirt with a softer, more relaxed brown long-sleeved top from Mango which is currently sold out, and finishes off the look with luxurious croc-effect silhouette boots by Paris Texas.

Duchess Sophie is a big fan of purple and green together and her blackberry-purple jumper and emerald wrap skirt proves why it’s a winning combination.

There are some colour combinations that are so easy to style that we don’t have to give it a second thought - from black and white to navy and camel. However, we’ve never really considered wearing purple and green together before - until, that is, we saw the Duchess of Edinburgh’s gorgeous outfit on 15th January. Duchess Sophie is an expert at styling brighter shades and although blossom pink - one of the biggest spring/summer fashion trends for 2025 - is a favourite, she’s also partial to green with pinks and purples.

Stepping out in London, the senior royal visited The Company Shop - Community Hub wearing a blackberry-toned jumper from Whistles with a maxi-length green skirt from Alberta Ferretti. If that wasn’t already enough of a celebration of purple and green Duchess Sophie also added a pair of berry ankle boots and a forest green bag, with an ecru coat over the top.

The jumper was such a timeless shape with a crew neckline and long sleeves, but it had a unique twist at the cuffs with a pretty tie detail. The bow trend was huge last year and both Duchess Sophie and the Princess of Wales are fans. The neatly tied bows on her jumper were a subtle way to embrace it and gave the jumper a feminine edge.

Many of us will have something in this berry colour in our winter capsule wardrobe as burgundies and wine shades have also been so popular in recent months, but if you don’t already own a blackberry-toned knit you might be tempted after seeing this look. Green might not be everyone’s first choice of a colour pairing with burgundy-purple but Duchess Sophie pulled it off with such elegance. This meant it had a gorgeous amount of volume and a traditional feel that worked so well for a cold winter’s day.

The Duchess of Edinburgh tucked her jumper into the skirt and finished off her outfit for her visit with her berry Jimmy Choo ankle boots and a forest green Sophie Habsburg bag. These echoed the green and purple combination of the rest of her look and were both very classic in shape and design, as was her longline ecru coat.

This is a great styling tip that will always add a dramatic punch to any minimal look and the oversized earrings look great, especially framed against Anita's super short bob.

Helen Skelton's sparkly red sequin skirt with complementary red Fair Isle jumper and black knee-high boots was the outfit I didn't know I needed, but I'm now desperate for.

Helen might just be my number one style icon – from outdoorsy chic to just plain elegant and gorgeous, the TV presenter never ceases to inspire me with new looks. Mixing up textures is a key monochrome dressing tip, and one that Helen exemplifies with the contrasting soft knit and slinky sequins in this outfit, worn on BBC1's Morning Live on 16 December.

At this time of year we love embracing all the sparkles and velvet with our Christmas party outfits, but when the festive period itself arrives often all we want to be wearing is something cosy. That doesn’t mean we don’t want to still feel elegant and put-together and this balance isn’t always easy. Thankfully, we can always rely on the royals for smart-casual style inspiration and Duchess Sophie didn’t let us down with her look for a visit to her patronage Disability Initiative’s resource centre. It’s in Camberley, close by to where Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward live at Bagshot Park, and the senior royal threw herself into many activities there, including carolling, painting and making mince pies.

For this busy day Duchess Sophie opted for a chic but comfortable outfit and wore a chunky brown jumper with a gorgeous velvet midi skirt. Like many of the jumpers in our winter capsule wardrobe this one had a snuggly roll neck design with ribbed detailing.

This was echoed on the cuffs and bottom hem and the Duchess of Edinburgh’s jumper also had dropped shoulders and blouson sleeves. Although we love a fitted knit when we want to tuck it seamlessly into jeans or skirts, a jumper with a more relaxed silhouette like this is lovely for more casual days and drapes beautifully when untucked.

If you’re tired of wearing Christmas jumpers already, then something like Duchess Sophie’s roll-neck is a brilliant alternative for those late December days. She might love wearing brighter colours and pink in particular, but her toasty jumper was a much more neutral chocolate brown shade. The warm undertones made this instantly feel even cosier and dark brown is a slightly softer hue compared to a black jumper but is equally versatile.

You could effortlessly mix and match a chocolate brown jumper like hers with so many other items in your wardrobe, from blue and black jeans to smart tailored trousers, and this colour looks especially wonderful with white, beige and rich warm hues. Burgundy is the biggest colour of the autumn/winter season and we’ve seen so many of her fellow royals embracing it recently, including Zara Tindall with her burgundy velvet suit. The Duchess’s skirt was midi length and looked to have a timeless A-line shape. Something like this is ideal for wearing with a chunkier jumper as it helps to balance out your silhouette and sits neatly under the knitwear.

The combination of the burgundy and brown was glorious and the velvet brought another texture into her outfit. This gave it more dimension and Duchess Sophie finished off her look with a pair of tights and slouchy tan knee high boots. They seem to be the ones she wore to the Together at Christmas service and if so they have a gently pointed toe and sturdy block heel.

We love how much Amanda is embracing the run up to Christmas with the seasonal touches added to her outfits. Putting together smart casual outfits from your winter capsule wardrobe might sound easy, but sometimes it can be tricky when all we want is to get cosy in our best wool jumpers and leggings. Thankfully, we’re never short of inspiration thanks to the Royal Family and Duchess Sophie’s latest look was a masterclass in elegant dressing in the colder months. The senior royal has been the Patron of Guide Dogs since 2021 and she attended the Buddy Dogs Family Event at the Guide Dogs UK centre on 31st October wearing the most beautiful maxi skirt, blazer and boot combination.

Although she regularly champions the best British clothing brands, this particular skirt was a Valentino design and it fell to her ankles in an A-line shape. The silk fabric was floaty which helped to create the skirt’s beautiful drape and the delicate pleats also gave it a lot of movement.

The background tone of Duchess Sophie’s skirt was black with a pattern of pale pink flowers with a darker centre and olive green leaves all over it. Throughout the warmer months the Duchess of Edinburgh - like so many of her fellow royals - is a big fan of wearing florals so it’s perhaps no surprise that she wants to take her favourite print through to autumn/winter too. This dark floral pattern had a gothic feel to it and it was very sophisticated and easy to style.

This included a black blazer which covered whichever top Duchess Sophie wore underneath. Blazers are a go-to in the royals’ wardrobes and this one was single-breasted and had classic lapels and a sweeping V-neckline. The buttons down the front were covered in the same material as the blazer, creating a seamless finish.

It finished just below Duchess Sophie’s waist and even had handy pockets on either side. The gorgeous fitted shape of her blazer was wonderful and worked well with her skirt, creating a silhouette reminiscent of a dress. A black blazer is such an important piece in so many people’s collections as it is a neutral colour and can instantly give an outfit a more formal edge.

If you don’t yet have one in your wardrobe it’s well worth investing in one to achieve the most elegant smart-casual outfit, styled with everything from a knitted dress to jeans and a jumper. Although the Duchess Edinburgh could easily have worn her skirt with a cosy roll neck jumper, tights and flat boots or black trainers, the blazer - and her Aquazurra Manzoni boots - elevated her look and made it more smart-casual. The boots had pointed toes and were crafted from what appears to be black suede, with a high block heel.

They rose to above her ankles and the suede material added a lovely level of textural contrast into her outfit. With jeans or leather trousers tucked in these would also be spectacular, though they looked so chic with her skirt and blazer too.

She finished off her look with a Lulu Guinness clutch bag, which she put down throughout her visit as she met children who are working to develop their independent living skills through the companionship and support of their buddy dogs. The buddy dogs help children with a vision impairment to build confidence, improve their wellbeing and increase their physical activity and the Duchess of Edinburgh got involved alongside the children in crafting and decorating Halloween biscuits for the dogs.

The ponytail wasn't too sleek, which gave the look a more laid-back, though still super elevated, feel. Helen leaned into this, keeping the top few buttons of her cardigan-style jumper undone and opting for a natural makeup look too.

Just a sweeping of bronzer and a glossy pink lip brought colour to her face, complimenting the blues of her look while also introducing another subtle and sweet colour.

We might think of summer as the time to wear vibrant shades and fun patterns, but when the skies turn grey and dreary there’s nothing like putting on a pop of colour to brighten up your day. When it comes to incorporating some brighter hues into your autumn capsule wardrobe many of us might be tempted towards jewel-tones like royal blue, pumpkin orange or red, with yellow often overrated. Sunshine yellow is very summery, but acid yellow can be far easier to wear than you might think - as demonstrated by BBC Morning Live’s Helen Skelton. 

Styled by the brilliant Alexandra Young for Thursday’s show, Helen shared a snap of her outfit which featured a denim peplum top and a rather spectacular neon yellow ombré skirt. The design went from navy through to white and ended in the yellow which then almost blended into her matching stiletto court shoes.

Whilst Helen’s ombré skirt featured all of these shades in one outfit, it showed how you can make wearing one neon yellow item less daunting by styling it with neutral tones like navy and white. The presenter’s skirt was a high-waisted midi skirt with pleats that also softened the graduation between the colours and added such a lovely feminine feel to it. On a colder day we wouldn’t be surprised to see Helen reaching for a pair of boots to wear with this, but for her workday she stepped out in some court shoe heels.

As with the skirt, the shoes had such a pared-back silhouette and this is another clever tip if you want to balance the brightness of a particular colour and make it more wearable day-to-day. The stiletto heel added height and a pointed toe is a flattering detail if you want a more leg-elongating effect. Court shoes are some of the best shoes to wear with wide-leg trousers and midi dresses too and they’re perfect for special events so it’s always worth having a pair or two in your collection.

Having a pair of yellow shoes that mirrored the shade at the bottom of Helen’s skirt looked so striking, but if you’re tempted to add a bit of neon yellow to your autumn looks and aren’t so sure, then you can do so in a more minimal way. Simply select a piece that works for you and your style - perhaps a jumper, skirt or an accessory - in a bright yellow and see how you get on styling it with your staples.

Helen Skelton might not have worn jeans herself for this episode of BBC Morning Live, but she highlighted how well neon yellow works with blue denim thanks to her top. It had a peplum at the bottom that draped over the waistband of her skirt, as well as slightly puffed short sleeves and a square neckline. The top had buttons running up the front as well as pocket flaps and a trim running along the hems.

Darker denim is a must-have in anyone’s denim capsule wardrobe and Helen’s top was an almost acid-wash, cool-toned dark blue colour. This worked so well with the navy at the top of her skirt and turned her entire outfit into a full ombré look that mirrored this piece. She finished off her outfit with a gold necklace and chunky hoop earrings for a touch of glamour.

After seeing how she’s styled neon yellow we’re more convinced than ever that we have to give wearing this vibrant hue a go ourselves this September.

The time has come to start putting together our autumn capsule wardrobe and whilst many people will be focused on the cosy knits and denim pieces, we shouldn’t forget to include a few more evening-appropriate staples too. An autumn evening out has us swapping our best white trainers for heeled boots and a satin midi skirt is the perfect style pairing for them if you want to look elegant yet sultry. This combination is one that Jennifer Aniston opted for back in 2019 for an appearance at The Late Late Show with Stephen Colbert and we can’t help still turning to this outfit for autumnal inspiration five years later. 

Tonal dressing is a chic fashion formula followed by the likes of the Princess of Wales and Geri Halliwell-Horner, and on this occasion Jennifer Aniston was also fully on board as she stepped out in New York in an all-black outfit. Her satin skirt was perhaps the star of the show, with its gorgeous sheen, asymmetric hem and lace trim.

Both her skirt and boots had incredibly pared-back designs which gave the actor’s look a sophisticated feel - something she added to with her choice of jacket.

On this rainy New York evening Jennifer layered up with a single-breasted black blazer that fell to just below her waist. The long sleeves ended in tapered cuffs and she wore it open over her black shirt and satin skirt. When dressing in one colour it’s always a lovely idea to incorporate some textural contrasts in place of a colour contrast and Jennifer certainly did that with her outfit here.

The smart fabric of her tailored jacket against the lustre of her skirt and the softness of her suede boots ensured her look had real depth to it and allowed each individual item to shine. If you wanted to replicate this kind of style but aren’t a fan of wearing all black, you could easily do so with other hues, such as brown boots, a chocolate brown satin skirt and a brown blazer.

She’s long been a fan of wavy hairstyles and wore her signature honey blonde tresses loose in waves, which helped to add a softness to her look. This was such a beautiful autumnal evening outfit from the star and one that we will be adding to our style rotation this season.

Queen Mary looked impossibly chic in a nautical-inspired outfit as she visited Vejle Harbour with her husband this week, pairing a gorgeous polka dot skirt with a printed shirt and oversized hat.

While royals in other parts of the country are relaxing on their summer holidays, with Queen Letizia of Spain stepping out in an unexpectedly casual outfit during her own much-needed break, Queen Mary is still in full work mode - and giving us impeccable looks as she undertakes her duties.

Earlier this week, the Danish royal visited Vejle Harbour in Denmark as part of her's and King Frederik's summer tour, stepping out in an appropriately nautical-inspired outfit for the occasion.

Channeling vintage glamour, Mary looked stunning in a navy, A-line polka-dot midi skirt and cropped, collarless blazer from Prada. The skirt's flattering 50s-style and voluminous silhouette brought a much more formal look to the outfit than Mary's previous polka-dot skirt that she wore during the Olympic Games in Paris earlier this year would have, proving the versatility of the dainty print and how different styles can bring totally different looks despite their similarities.

Juxtaposing the dainty pattern on the skirt, which is from the brand Baum und Pferdgarten, Mary opted for a printed blouse from Proenza Schouler. The abstract pattern on the blouse brought a modern twist to the nautical style, adding some texture and fun into the outfit.

But the real star of the show here is Mary's oversized hat - we love it! While the sun didn't make much of an appearance during Mary's visit, the accessory ensured her hair wasn't billowing all over the place and we can see stylish hats like this becoming an autumn staple for those windy days where your strands just can't be tamed.

To finish off her look, Mary styled her hair in bouncy waves and kept her makeup minimal with just a nude-pink lipstick bringing a subtle shine to her skin.

She also carried the 'Small Whitney Bag' in the shade Ivory from the brand Max Mara. The style is a classic, with it's soft, semi-glossy leather, modular, boxy appearance, and classic double handles making it the perfect designer handbag to finish off any outfit.

With the return of grey weather in the UK many of us might have found ourselves stepping up our plans for our autumn capsule wardrobe. Coats, cosy knits and boots are going to become our most reached-for staples over the next few months but the transition between late summer and autumn can be tricky to dress for. Enter Helen Skelton, who’s been giving us plenty of outfit inspiration this summer but who also has impeccable transitional style too. In September last year she took to Instagram to share a series of snaps and clips from filming Channel 5’s On the Farm and the first look we saw from her was a winning autumnal combination of a short sleeved knit, satin skirt and boots.

We got another glimpse of this outfit in the video and we’re not surprised she kicked it off with this. The skirt was a sumptuous olive green shade and fell to an elegant midi length, with a beautiful sheen to it from the satin material.

Jumpers are a failsafe for colder weather but sometimes we don’t want maximum cosiness as the start of autumn can often be mild. This is when sleeveless or short sleeved knits come into their own and Helen’s was so neutral and classic, with its cable knit pattern and roll neck.

The TV star finished off her On the Farm look with a pair of chunky black Chelsea boots with a practical cleated sole and elasticated panels on the sides. These looked comfy and functional as well as stylish, and they added an edge to Helen’s outfit.

On a colder day if she wanted to have more of her legs covered in warm material she could switch these out for knee high boots, but these boots were perfect for this transitional autumnal outfit.

This combination of a satin skirt, knit and boots is a uniform that can easily be adapted for late summer, autumn and even into winter. Satin skirts are a go-to in Helen’s wardrobe and she wore a vibrant fuchsia pink skirt with a matching shirt and court shoe heels in March on BBC Morning Live. We also love this one and we’re tempted to style a satin skirt with so many top options this autumn.

It's by one of the best British clothing brands, Rixo, and it should be top of your list if you're looking to curate an autumn capsule wardrobe. For the third day of her trip to Colombia, the royal looked effortlessly chic and summer-ready in a long white maxi skirt from luxury brand Posse, styling the lightweight piece, which featured a daring split detail, with an off-white crew neck tank top.

The monochrome look might have been simple, but the versatile pieces are easily set to become staples in any summer capsule wardrobe, with their timeless and classic silhouettes being easily styled for both casual and more formal occasions.

We love Meghan's choice of footwear, with her practical and chic T-bar flat sandals leaning into the sleek and laid-back look of her outfit. A pair of stylish white trainers would've worked equally well and, as soon as we saw the royal's linen skirt, we immediately wanted to wear it with the UGG sandals we never knew existed but that look both so comfy and so chic.

Her straw boater hat from the Colombian designer Hannia Char was a great choice for the outing, with the wide brim keeping the sun off of her face and protecting her skin from any harmful UV rays. It also looked impossibly chic, with the black ribbon detailing tying in with both Meghan's sandals and the black lenses of her gold-framed RayBan sunglasses.
